This past weekend, Chris Kaye and Kenneth Dean drove up to Ft. Worth, TX from the outskirts of Houston where they live to go see Iron Maiden in concert. And while they were driving up, they decided it would be a great time to record an episode. So that’s what they did. They went back to what they did when they first met. They brought up a subject and just started talking about it. So what was the topic you ask? Why all the hate?
All musical artists have their fans and their critics, but some artists elicit such an emotional response from fans and critics alike it begs one to wonder why? On this episode, the guys discussed 3 bands that have all had enormous success and also have some of the harshest critics: Nickelback, Creed and Metallica. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.

1987 was the year that the cracks would begin to show in the world of heavy metal and more specifically Glam Metal. But it still had some very good metal music. While one band was on top of the world 2 years earlier and would disband in 1987, one band that formed 2 years earlier went on to have the biggest selling debut of all-time. Some may say the guys are stuck in the 80’s and for this episode, they are as they breakdown 1987. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.

In 2006 the former member of the Dio era Black Sabbath reunited as Heaven and Hell and recorded 3 new songs to be included in a Black Sabbath Dio Years compilation. That led to a tour and then a full album. The subsequent tour would be Ronnie’s last as he was diagnosed with stomach cancer shortly thereafter and passed away on May 16, 2010. About a year and half later, the original Black Sabbath convened at the famed Whisky A Go-Go to announce they would be reuniting with plans to record a new album and tour. 13 was released in 2013 and their final tour followed. On this episode, the guys pit the final albums of these two bands careers to see which one we think is the better album. They also give you their BIG 4 Ronnie James Dio Songs. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.

It's part 5 and the final part of our series call the 10 Most Important in Metal History and we saved the best for last. Whether you want to admit it or not, lead singers are the most vital component when it comes to a band. While it is affectionately and commonly known that most singers have LSD, Lead Singers Disease, there is a reason for that. The singer is the front man, the most visible person on the stage and essentially the mouthpiece of the band. Today we’re going to share with you whom we think are the 10 Most Important Vocalists in Metal History and we're sure it won’t come without controversy....So sit back, relax and let the debate begin.

It's Part 3 of the 5-part series The 10 Most Important in Metal History. Drummers by and large are a unique breed of people. As the old saying goes, they spend their days hitting things with sticks so they are a little different to begin with. But to be considered one of the best in history, that means you’ve got a lot more going on than just a good back beat. These next group of drummers the guys will be discussing are some of the most unique, ferocious, and dare I say intelligent drummers to grace the world of Music. To Debating Metal, they are the 10 Most Important Drummers in Metal History.. So sit back, relax and let the debate begin.

Part 2 of the 5-part series The 10 Most Important in Metal History. Typically, the bassist and the drummer work in unison to keep the beat and rhythm of the song. Other times, bassists take a more intricate roll whether it's playing melodies as an additional guitarist or playing the instrument as if they were the lead guitarist. Either way, bassists are the foundation of every band and on this episode, the guys give you their opinions on who they think the 10 Most Important Bassist in Heavy Metal History are. Heavy metal mascots come in all shapes, sizes and species. Not every band has one. Not every band needs one. Today we’re going to go over some of the most poplar heavy metal mascots of all time.

1986 was an amazing year and not just because a certain Debating Metal host was born that year but because it truly was the Year of Metal. So many huge albums by some of the biggest metal bands in history were released in 86. Bands like AC/DC, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Guns N Roses and Van Halen all released albums in 86 and the guys are going to talk about a few of them as well as talk about the year as a whole. And then when they get to the end, they’ll give you their BIG 4 Metal Albums from 1986, which coincidentally may not be the same ones they talked about. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.

First introduced in 1952 as what would become known as a 45, they first were a way to split an LP into 2 or 3 smaller 7” EPs. Later on, they became a way to compile several singles onto one format. As time went on EPs waned in popularity but made a comeback in the 70’s when punk rock and the DIY craze began. In the late 70’s, and 80’s EPs in Heavy Metal became increasingly poplar as a way of releasing music for the independent and financially challenged artist. On this episode, Kenneth Dean and Chris are going to talk about some notable EPs, give you their take on those EPs and then at the end, They'll give you their BIG 4 Metal EPs. In the mid 80’s, the Bay Area Thrash was taking off thanks to the likes of Exodus and Metallica. One band in particular, Legacy, which formed in 1983, would go on to sign a record deal, change singers, change their name and go onto become one of the most influential Bay Area Thrash bands. That band is Testament.
In 1986, original vocalist Steve Souza left to join Exodus as a replacement for the fired Paul Baloff. At Souza’s suggestion, Testament hired Chuck Billy as their new singer. With their lineup set, Testament would sign with Megaforce Records and release their debut album The Legacy in 1987. Since that time, Testament have released 13 studio albums, 4 live albums, 2 Eps and 5 compilations.
On this episode, Chris and Kenneth Dean will choose 15 songs each from their 13 studio albums. Any songs duplicated automatically make the list. Whichever songs are not, they’ll debate to see which make the final cut. Then they’ll arrange them in concert setlist order for the Ultimate Testament Greatest Hits.

Sometimes, a song or album we like didn’t quite appeal to the masses or was released at a time when the band was going through turmoil and the music didn’t quite get that push. Maybe it was released before the band got big and no one really talks about that album. But somewhere on that album is song you really like or maybe you really love that album and nobody else does. On this episode, the guys picked 4 albums each that they think need some awareness or reconsideration. At the end, they also pick their BIG 4 Metal Duets. In recent weeks, The guys have made a concerted effort to broaden the scope of what they talk about and how they talk about it. Well on this episode they really take a left turn as they are going to talk about their guilty pleasures.
Maybe it’s a song you heard your parents play a million times when you were young. Maybe it a song or album that you used to listen to when you weren’t into metal. Maybe it’s none of the above. Either way, the guys are going to deep dive into the music that is not what they typically listen to but it’s something that when it comes on the radio they turn it up just a little louder and maybe even get their groove on.

On this episode the guys are taking a trip once again back in time but not as far as they’ve done before. This time they’re going back to 1997. Nu-Metal was all the rage, and a lot of new bands were beginning to peer around the corner. 1997 may not have been glamourous. It may not have been earth shattering, but it was important. It was like a transition year that saw the birth of many new artists that would later become mainstays on the metal scene and saw the end of a few influential bands as well. And be sure to stick around to the end as they’ll give you their BIG 4 Metal Songs of 1997. So sit back, relax, grab a cold one or a shot of your favorite poison and let the debate begin.

After the rise and fall of Grunge, the New Wave of American Heavy Metal saw an explosion of new artists and new styles. One of the bands that stood out and lead the way was Lamb of God.
Formed in 1994 as Burn the Priest, the band released their self titled debut album in 1999 and 1 year later changed their name to Lamb of God and the rest they say is history. After 10 full length albums (9 Lamb of God, 2 Burn the Priest), 1 EP and 1 live album, Lamb of God have sold over 2 million albums in the US and after touring with bands such as Anthrax, Megadeth and most recently Pantera, Lamb of God show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
The guys have chosen 15 songs each from their catalog that they consider their best songs. Any tracks they duplicate will automatically make the list. Whichever songs are not, they’ll debate to see which makes the final cut. Then they’ll arrange them in concert setlist order for the ULTIMATE LAMB OF GOD GREATEST HITS and at the end, they’ll give you our BIG 4 Lamb of God albums. Sometimes, despite talent and good songs, a band doesn't get things right the first time and might have to change things up to break a new market. On this episode, the guys are going to talk about albums that for one reason or another were remixed, remastered and rereleased by the band. In most cases, it’s a bands first album that may have been self-released and their new record company wants a share of the new profits. Or in some cases the record label had different ideas that they thought may help the band sell more records. Today, the guys picked 8 bands to take a look at and deep dive on the subject. When it comes to the music business, not many artists can claim to have had 2 successful careers, let alone 1. Artists like Ozzy Osbourne and Sammy Hagar are examples of artists who have had multi-platinum success first in a band and then as solo artists with Sammy even joining an already successful band and making it more successful than before.
Another example of this is Dave Grohl, who first came to prominence as the drummer for the highly successful grunge band Nirvana. After taking some time off to mourn the loss of his friend and bandmate Kurt Cobain, Dave reemerged with his new project Foo Fighters. After 11 studio releases, 3 EP’s, 1 live album and a variety of compilations having sold over 32 million albums worldwide, we give you Foo Fighters Greatest Hits. Metallica released their latest album on April 14, 2023 and we decided to give you a review of the album. Writing for the album began in 2020 during the pandemic shutdown and recording began in March of 2021 and finished in November of last year. The album was announced shortly thereafter on the Howard Stern show and the single “Lux Aeterna” was released that day.
Joining us on the episode is Sklo who sat in recently when Chris Kaye was under the weather. So with that said, we’ve listened to all 12 songs and we’re going to give you what we honestly think of this release, warts and all on this special episode of Debating Metal – The 72 Seasons Review.

On this episode Chris Kaye returns as he and Kenneth Dean, the Dean of Metal once again going back to the 80’s for a head-to-head that no one saw coming. Known for their motto “Death to False Metal”, today it’s Manowar’s Fighting the World vs. Kings of Metal. After signing their major label record contract, Manowar released their 1987 album Fighting the World to a generally good response and MTV picked up on their music video for “Blow Your Speakers” which got some decent airplay in the channel. Their follow up LP Kings of Metal came out a year later and became their most successful album to date. Today, we put these two albums of steel head-to-head to see which one rides into glory and which one heads to Valhalla. Will it be Fighting the World or will it be Kings of Steel?

On this special interim episode, Kenneth Dean, the Dean of Metal is without his metal partner in crime Chris Kaye. Chris is recovering from some sort of cold, cough, sinus thingy. So tonight, the Kenneth Dean flies solo!
Tonight Kenneth Dean is going to talk about Debut EP’s from 80’s metal bands and the stories behind them. As you know, in the 80’s heavy metal really began to take off and forge it’s own path. While it eventually became subdivided into glam metal and thrash metal and speed and all the other metals you can think of back then, when it first started it was simply heavy metal. Kenneth Dean is going to look at some those band’s first releases that were either independently released or released on newly formed independent labels. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin???

40 years ago, the L.A Club scene was on the verge of exploding onto the mainstream. Bands like Dokken, Motley Crue and Quiet Riot were getting gobbled up by major label record companies looking to find the next BIG THING while veterans like Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne and AC/DC were looking to maintain their relevance.
At the same time, new bands, tired of the hairspray and makeup of the burgeoning glam scene began to make waves in the underground. The rising thrash metal scene that permeated from the Bay Area as well as New York City would give birth to several influential independent record companies that would release the debut albums some of metal biggest names.
If you haven’t guessed by now, we’re referring to the year 1983 and what a year it was. Today, Chris and I are going to talk about some of the events of 1983 and talk about some of the metal albums that had a huge impact on the scene. And at the end, we’ll give you our BIG 4 Albums of 1983. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.

With its roots dating all the way back to 1984, Grunge took America by storm in the early 90’s. It broke all the rules and defied the norms set by music industry bigwigs. Grunge bands changed the standards by which heavy rock music was done. It changed how bands wrote music, how they presented themselves, how they dressed and in turn, it became a cultural phenomenon that flipped the music and fashion industries on their heads. This week, we’re diving in feet first as we begin our 2 part series – The Grunge Scene. And stick around until the end for our BIG 4 Grunge Bands. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.

And for the final episode of the year, we're giving you our BIG 4 Albums of 2022. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin!!!

Today we are revisiting an episode we did 100 episodes ago, but we’re approaching it from a different angle. 2 years ago on Episode 18, we did KISS – Masked vs. Unmasked and we focused more on the music side of the story. This time, we’re taking it from a more personal point of view. We’re going to look into the how’s and why’s of some of the decisions KISS made throughout their career and the consequences those decisions made. From developing their makeup, refusing to back down when other bands didn’t like their antics, replacing members, to taking off the makeup, re-energizing their career and then putting the makeup back on, it always seemed like KISS were on the brink of collapse just to rise again. Today we dive into KISS – The 70’s vs. the 80’s vs. Now. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.
On this weeks episode, the guys talk about band splits. Member turnover is nothing new in the world of bands and rock n roll. For one reason or another, be it ego, money, drugs, alcohol or any combination of said vices, not all bands stay together for their entire careers. Some bands even have no original members. But for the purpose of this discussion, we’re going to talk about the bands who members left the band, either fired or on their own and decided to start another band with the same name. And then at the end, we'll give you our BIG 4 L.A. Guns Songs. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.

In 1996, Sepultura released Roots, their final album with Max Cavalera on vocals and rhythm guitar. 2 years later, Max returned with his own band Soulfly and their debut release, Soulfly. Both albums used tribal rhythms as their foundation. And both albums showcased their groove metal styles, but only one can be considered better than the other. And after that debate, we offer you our BIG 4 Soulfly songs. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.
