My guest today is Clare Smyth (MBE). Clare is one of the world's most respected chefs. She is the first and only British female chef to be awarded three Michelin stars which she achieved for her restaurant Core by Clare Smyth in Notting Hill. Growing up on a farm in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, her passion for food began at a young age and even inspired some of her most famous dishes from her restaurant. 

By the time she was 17 she had graduated from culinary school and moved to London to work with and learn from the world best chefs. She went on to train in some of the most celebrated kitchens in the world including with Alain Ducasse and Gordon Ramsay. She would go on to break new ground by becoming Chef Patron of three Michelin-starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay before going on to open her own restaurant in 2017. It took less than 3 years for her to be awarded her own 3 Michelin stars. Clare has received numerous awards including the title of the World's Best Female Chef 2018 And in 2013 Clare was awarded an MBE for services to the hospitality industry.

My guest today is the founder of Hoppers - Karan Gokani. Combining his passion for cooking with his love of the country of Sri Lanka he has built a restaurant empire celebrating the food of Sri Lanka and Southern India. I went to Sri Lanka last year for the first time and completely fell in love with the food. I’ve been to Hoppers many times so I kind of knew what to expect but honestly it’s just the most amazing country and the most delicious food so it was brilliant to hear from Karan about his love for it it too.

I know I told you that this was going to just be a little short season for the month of February but already we have come to the last episode of this mini season – it’s gone very quickly but fear not as we are already recording the next – so hopefully wont be too long to wait.

We are back! For a short mini series but back nonetheless! I missed you! And I'm very excited that today my guest today is Claudia Roden.

Described as the food writer who never goes out of fashion. She began collecting recipes in 1956, while a student in London. The Suez crisis of that year turned many people from Egypt into refugees: preserving the food culture of the Jewish community was as much practical as it was emotional. 

These recipes led to her debut masterpiece A Book of Middle Eastern Food which really cemented Claudia’s future as one of the greatest food writers we’ve ever known. Her book revolutionised Western attitudes to the cuisines of the Middle East.

Her books have been loved by not only home cooks but also have laid the foundation for many of the most ambitious professional kitchens, and heavily influenced some of the most well known chefs working today, from the River Café, to Ottolenghi, Alistair Little and Moro to name just a few. Claudia’s talent for mixing up the scholarly with the practical is what really has set her apart. Often described as an anthropologist as well as a historian, essayist and poet - her books are as much about culture an anthropology as they are about recipes. But she says she doesn’t follow scholarly rules, and didn’t go to university, she is a food writer through and through who simply finds a dish and wants to learn all about it. 

What is clear is that she is the Master of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours and a hero for the industry and people who love food.

My guest today is Rick Stein. A highly requested guest, I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did recording it. Rick is, of course, a chef, restaurateur, cook book author and television presenter. He has written over 25 cookery books, a memoir and made over 30 television programmes. His latest cookbook, Simple Suppers is out now. It has been nearly 50 years since he first opened The Fish Restaurant in Padstow, an area of Cornwall he fell in love with at a young age and has made his home. 

Despite his successes, Rick describes himself as an accidental restaurateur – who never planned on a career in food. And yet how lucky we are that his dreams of running a nightclub were quashed by the local authorities and led instead to the Stein restaurant empire we know today. 

He is the man who could pretty much entirely be credited with bringing an appreciation of fish to the UK masses, something he says he didn’t set out to do intentionally, it just made sense at the time. Despite his obvious success, Rick has said, “I’ve definitely got a sense of not being very good at stuff. It’s sort of absurd because, you know, I’ve done really quite well for myself, but I still really doubt myself. It’s just the way I am.”

My guest today is Ed Gamble

Ed is a comedian, an actor, host of the Off Menu podcast amongst others, and judge on the Great British Menu. He can now also add author to his bio of credentials as his debut book Glutton has just been published.

His career in comedy began at Durham university performing with the Durham revue before heading to the Edinburgh fringe for the first time in 2011 

His stand-up comedy is largely observational comedy, often aimed at himself, including discussion of his diabetes, which he was diagnosed with as a teenager. He says his humour was honed by a fixation with all things sitcoms and stand up.  Ed has been a regular panellist on the BBC panel show Mock the Week , has acted for shows on the BBC and hosted several radio shows. The Off Menu podcast which he hosts with James Acaster has been a phenomenal success which has seen him become somewhat of a household name. 

When asked what made him get into comedy, Ed replied, The perfect mix of a terrifying ego and an astonishing lack of self-esteem. I can’t tell day to day whether I’m arrogant or I hate myself, but I think somewhere in-between is absolutely ideal for a comedian.

My guest today is Russell Norman 

Known as The Restaurant Man. He is a writer, broadcaster and award winning founder of celebrated restaurants with first THE POLPO restaurant group and now BRUTTO. 

Hailed as “London’s coolest restaurateur” and having been described as the man who saved restaurants after the financial crash, Russell is a restaurateur with over 20 years experience in London restaurants – he worked his way up from bartender, to waiter, maître d, general manager and operations director at Caprice Holdings before opening his first restaurant Polpo. 

Never one to follow trends, in fact he sets them…it was Russell that started our love affair with small plates, sharing platters and a move away from the fussiness of fine dining. It was also Russell that started the strict no reservation policy that spread like wild fire. 

Russell has said, "A lot of people fantasise about opening their own restaurant, thinking it is going to be a bit like a dinner party but with a till, but it’s a fallacy” The reality is 18 hour days and they would be tired and miserable”. And yet he says for him, the feeling of running a restaurant is as though “someone’s plugged into the mains”.

Today’s guest on The Dream Dinner Party is Donal Skehan who is so much fun and who has been on Desert Island Dishes before – a few years ago but defiitrly worth having a listen to his main episode as it’s a goodie. I think he was in the very early days when I just turned up with basically a little Dictaphone recorder and hoped for the best. My guest today is Sarah Wilson

Sarah started I Quit Sugar in 2011 as a lifestyle experiment for a column she was writing. This led to an e-book, then three New York Times bestsellers and a business that saw 1.5 million people signing up to an eight-week nutrition programme. But as time went on, Sarah wasn’t enjoying it anymore. She says, ‘The business got to a point where it had gone from being a joy – creating, inventing, connecting with people – to a business concern. It felt soul-destroying. It felt wrong.’ And so in February 2022 she sold off the business and its assets and gave everything to charity. She now donates the money to carefully researched charity projects that target inequality, indigenous issues and the climate crisis.

Sarah consumes essentials only, has never owned a handbag and doesn’t own a car. Her career has been extraordinary, she became the editor of Cosmopolitan Australia at 29, hosted the most-watched TV series show in the nation’s history -the first season of Masterchef Australia – and wrote the international bestseller First, We Make the Beast Beautiful, which Mark Manson described as “the best book on living with anxiety that I’ve ever read”. Her most recent book This One Wild and Precious Life, is also a prize winner and Sarah has been ranked in the top 200 most influential authors in the world (two years in a row).

You may well know Jon from his friendly, down-to-earth cooking videos online where he has amassed a huge following of avid fans but what you may not know is that Jon is where he is today through a lot of hard work and determination to turn his life around completely.

He left school at the age of 16 with no idea what he wanted to do, he found himself hanging out with the wrong crowd and was constantly getting into trouble with the police. In 2008 he was sentenced to 6 ½ years in a young offenders institute. He said he had two choices: spending 23 hours a day in a cell or signing up for everything he could. He signed up for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and in that moment he changed the entire course of his life.

Jon became the first person to ever earn a gold Duke of Edinburgh award whilst in prison receiving the award from Prince Philip himself. Jon went on to work for Jamie Oliver, where his passion for food was really ignited and now 16 years on, he runs a successful food business working as a chef and has just released his first cookbook.

Thom Bateman started his career as a chef at the age of 17, after training at Buxton College and gaining a knowledge of the classical techniques. He quickly rose through the ranks and became head chef at the tender age of 18.

In 2009 Thom decided to leave the culinary world behind him, in order to protect his mental health and get a change in scene, a chance to travel to learn more about the world but also himself.

10 years later, Thom started a food blog page known as Bboxfood reigniting a passion for cooking. Through this, he began working with big brands and before long, he had amassed a large and loyal following. That following now sits at close to 3.5 million followers.

Heading back to his roots… Thom decided to open the ‘The Flintlock’. His critically acclaimed restaurant, it’s a family affair and It’s from here he creates all his recipes and videos. This week we welcome Poppy O’Toole to tell us all about her dream dinner party and her choice of guests and the venue are guaranteed to make this a very fun dinner party. Poppy O’Toole, also known as Poppy Cooks, is a Michelin-trained professional chef, who turned to tiktok upon losing her job in 2020 to fill some time. 3 years later, Poppy has amassed over 4 million followers on tiktok and her second cookbook is about to be released. She is a judge on Junior Masterchef and as the self-proclaimed Potato Queen, teaches her audience to make all sorts of potato delights as well as a whole host of other lovely recipes that aim to make cooking and food accessible to all audiences.

There is no right or wrong way to host a dinner party, whether it’s a dream one or not. A casual take away with your very closest friends or a full on affair where you impress people you’ve never met. The term dinner party can be a bit loaded, but in my mind it encompasses every occasion and every way of doing it

She has amassed a following of over 1.3 million with her easy to follow but super indulgent recipes for all levels of bakers. From her large Instagram following, regular This Morning stints and record breaking stats, Jane’s hugely engaged following make her this generation’s go-to baker and have her being called the Mary Berry of the Instagram age. 

Her debut book, Jane’s Patisserie, became the fastest-selling baking book of all time, selling 44,000 copies in its first 3 days after publication. Outselling some of the biggest names out there and she ddid this without the support of a TV show or a huge publicity drive. Pretty impressive stuff from the woman who found her way into baking after ending up in cookery school on a fluke.

Fred has become known as the nation’s favourite maitre d’ and TV personality.

He initially wanted to be a chef, but having decided that the repetitive nature of professional cooking would stifle his creativity, he switched his attention to the front of house and has never looked back. Fred worked in Michelin-starred restaurants in both France and the UK, and rose to fame back in 2013 on Channel 4’s BAFTA-winning matchmaking show First Dates, where his warmth and charm was a tonic to the nerve-wracked daters entering the first dates restaurant.

I'm so excited that today Diana Henry is sharing her Desert Island Dishes with me. Diana is one of my favourite recipe writers and it was a total joy to sit down with her. Diana is a multi award-winning food writer, journalist, broadcaster and cook book author. Described as one of the most prolific recipe writers of a generation but also one of the most beloved.

Will is the founder of Deliveroo – the food delivery company he launched in 2013 with his childhood friend Greg Orlowski. After coming up with the idea for whilst working 100 hour weeks as an investment banker – the two friends seized on the opportunity to pair newly emerging technology with restaurants in order to enable people to order restaurant food straight to their door. A simple but genius idea that has seen Deliveroo grow to unicorn status and beyond and for Will to be known as one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. 

He describes himself as just a normal guy whilst people who have worked with him and know him personally describe him as being gritty, calm and deliberate and most of all humble. 

This can be seen through the fact that Will can still regularly be found to be delivering food orders personally on his bike. Not something many CEO's would be found doing at this stage of their business. 

In 2022 Deliveroo partnered with the Trussell Trust and togteher they have provided 2 million meals and support to hundreds of thousands of people facing hunger in the UK.

Jimi is a writer, broadcaster and food critic. He is the chief restaurant critic for the Evening Standard, a regular guest judge on the BBC One series MasterChef and was also one of the judges on Channel 4’s The Great Cookbook Challenge with Jamie Oliver.

In 2021, he won Restaurant Writer of the Year at both the Fortnum & Mason Awards and the Guild of Food Writers Awards and as an interviewer he has profiled Black African Londoners including Idris Elba, John Boyega and Skepta.

He says the thing he loves most about writing about food is “Food is wordless communication. A way to be creative, clever or reference culture without speaking. My guest today is Ravinder Bhogal

Kenyan born, raised in the UK by Indian parents, Ravinder Bhogal is one of the UK’s most successful food writers, restaurateurs and chefs. Calling her food and menus “proudly inauthentic”, Ravinder’s work and food spans flavours and culinary traditions from the Asia, The Middle East, East Africa and Britain – celebrating the idea of immigrant cuisine.

She opened her first restaurant Jikoni in Marylebone in 2016 and it quickly became a roaring success, collecting culinary accolades, such as being placed in the Michelin Guide within its first year as well as collecting regular clients with whom Ravinder and team get to know well – giving the restaurant a real neighbourhood feel.

Ravinder’s latest book comes from a lockdown idea, where her and her husband began making meals for front-line workers in London, named Comfort & Joy. This book, also named Comfort & Joy, is a glorious collection of vegetarian/vegan recipes that celebrate eating in a vegetable forward way that is easy and accessible to all.

This week John Torode talks us through his Dream Dinner Party and we are off to Singapore to board the Orient Express! All aboard!

John is one of the food world’s most recognisable faces. He grew up in Melbourne, Australia, starting his career in the world of food at the age of 16.

He credits his love of food and passion for cooking to his grandmother, who raised him from the age of 4. After apprenticeships at some of Melbourne’s best restaurants, he moved to the UK in the 1990s, where he quickly made a name for himself. He worked his way up from a sous chef at Quaglino’s and he’s had his own hugely successful restaurants, the likes of Smiths and The Luxe.

He first appeared on ITV‘s This Morning in 1996 and became a household name as the co-host of Masterchef in 2005 which will enter its 20th season next year. He’s written numerous best-selling cookbooks and made a whole host of award-winning TV shows and was honoured in the Queens Birthday Honours in 2022 for outstanding services to food, broadcasting and charity.

My guest today is David Gandy.

After winning a televised modelling competition at the age of 21 he went on to become the world’s first and most successful male supermodel. David’s big break came in 2007 in the form of his first Dolce & Gabbana campaigns, which saw him become a global sensation overnight when the iconic image of him wearing tiny white trunks in a boat in Capri shot by Mario Testino appeared on a 50ft billboard in Times Square. He still fronts this Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue campaign today, as well as working with the biggest brands and names in the industry, from high fashion to high street. 

A style icon, family man, vintage car aficionado and now founder of his eponymous brand, David Gandy Wellwear.

His university housemate secretly entered a photo of him into a competition on This Morning to win a modelling contract and all these years later, things don’t seem to be slowing down for him either. Between modelling being a father of 2 and his own line, he says that he has always treated his career as a business and has learned his biggest lessons from supermodels such as Christy Turlington and Kate Moss.

Despite the pressures to be in incredible shape, David has always said he eats a mix of foods and in moderation, staying away from ultra processed foods and he spent lockdown whipping up delicious meals in his mother-in-law’s big Le Creuset pot.

John is one of the food world’s most recognisable faces. He grew up in Melbourne, Australia, starting his career in the world of food at the age of 16.

He credits his love of food and passion for cooking to his grandmother, who raised him from the age of 4. After apprenticeships at some of Melbourne’s best restaurants, he moved to the UK in the 1990s, where he quickly made a name for himself. He worked his way up from a sous chef at Quaglino’s and he’s had his own hugely successful restaurants, the likes of Smiths and The Luxe.

He first appeared on ITV‘s This Morning in 1996 and became a household name as the co-host of Masterchef in 2005 which will enter its 20th season next year. He’s written numerous best-selling cookbooks and made a whole host of award-winning TV shows and was honoured in the Queens Birthday Honours in 2022 for outstanding services to food, broadcasting and charity.

Introducing our new mini episode...it's a little after dinner something to keep you going through the week. It's The Dream Dinner Party.

It's short and sweet, just one simple question. Each week we will have a different guest guiding us through their Dream Dinner Party. Twiggy is one of those rare celebrities known by a single name.

She was the girl from Neasden, north London who became the face of the swinging sixties. With her petite frame at just 5ft 6 Twiggy smashed the stereotypes of what it meant to be a supermodel. Her pixie hair cut and wide eyes will forever be iconic. 

As the model of her age she was propelled into the glamorous world of fashion and photography and later she found success as a singer, dancer and actress. She starred in Ken Russell’s film The boyfriend – a performance for which she won not one by two golden globes. In 1983 her talents took her to Broadway for her debut in the musical My One and Only.

She is a wife, mother, grandmother and of course fellow podcaster. 

She has said of her many successes “ I think I’ve had a brilliant career. And more importantly I’ve had a very happy life.”

Shivi has been dubbed by The Guardian as the “Caribbean Food Supremo”, and it has been said she is the "Queen of Contemporary Caribbean Cooking". She is a food writer, cookbook author, TV chef and presenter. She was born in Trinidad but was brought up between there, New York, the English countryside and London. This diverse upbringing has really influenced her style of cooking. She says her culinary mission is to twist classic Caribbean dishes and make them into her own vibrant, fresh and easy to make recipes. 

She’s had a fascinating career - Starting out as singer / songwriter – training as a lawyer before going on Masterchef and turning her dream of working in food into a reality. Jesse, known online as ADIP has taken the food world by storm with his cinematic cooking videos which have been wracking up millions of views. Despite only starting his social media last year he has already amassed several hundreds of thousands of avid fans and followers. 

Jesse grew up in LA combining working in a professional kitchen with life as a sponsored skateboarder. He then came to the UK and spent a very successful decade working as a fashion photographer and director, shooting campaigns for the likes of Marc Jacobs and Victoria Beckham.  

But it was always food that was his true passion. Inspired by the people he has cooked for and alongside over the years, his food is in his own words, “fresh, fast and a bit filthy, with a laid-back American vibe - perfect for sharing”. Singer and songwriter Jack Savoretti is described in pretty much every interview I came across as both extremely talented and also very charming perhaps it is this combination that has led to Jack’s stellar career. He tells us of his idyllic childhood Summers spent in the Italian Riviera, why he's grateful that his success didn't happen overnight and reveals a surprising yet delicious final desert island dish.

Jack's one of the most successful singer / songwriters in the UK and has collaborated with the likes of Kylie Minogue, Bob Dylan and Nile Rogers and performed to a sold out Wembley Arena. He had an international upbringing, with an Italian father and a German-Polish mother, moving from London to Switzerland, and spending idyllic childhood summers in Portofino, Italy, where his father’s family come from.

After falling in love with music at the age of 15 it was a somewhat slow-burning rise to fame for Jack as a musician. He toured the UK for several years, quietly growing his fanbase and it was his sixth album, Singing to Strangers, that finally hit the number one spot. His most recent record, the gorgeous sun-soaked, feel good and star-studded Europiana – inspired by his European upbringing and life –was also a chart-topper and arguably his best work to date.

Dawn O'Porter is an author, broadcaster, writer, podcaster and journalist.

Julius Roberts is a first generation millennial farmer and rising star of the food scene. 

In 2016 he gave up working at the acclaimed restaurant Noble Rot in London - and swapped the rat race for an idyllic life of pigs, goats and chickens instead.

His first foray into farming was a small-holding in rural Suffolk and then last year he moved with his family to a farm in Dorset. 

His charm and humble approach to life on the farm have seen him amass an army of followers online as he shares the trials and tribulations of farm life alongside his menagerie of animals. Julius describes himself as a cook, farmer and gardener on a journey to self-sufficiency.

Julius says his his aim is simple – "to educate his audience on topics including animal welfare and seasonal cooking".

My guest today is Sally Clarke

Sally has been described as the unsung hero of British food, and her cooking a masterclass in simplicity. She was just 14 when she envisaged the restaurant that she would one day open and this year Clarkes celebrates it’s 37th year.

Despite the prevailing fad for Nouvelle Cuisine at the time she opened in December 1984 , she never waivered in her mission to showcase fresh and seasonal ingredients, cooked simply and in her trademark unpretentious style. It’s no wonder her restaurant was Lucian Freud’s favourite haunt

In the 25th year of being in business, she was awarded an MBE in the queens birthday honours list for services to hospitality – an award she modestly states she shares with everyone involved in the running of Clarkes. Alongside the restaurant, she runs a booming bakery business which has over 120 wholesale customers, and sees them making over 60,000 mince pies during the run up to Christmas. . If you’ve ever tucked into a pain au chocolage on the Eurostar, chances are it was one of Clarkes.

She has just written her third and self proclaimed final book. It has been said that she is a quietly successful restaurateur, described by Jason Atherton, amongst others as Britain's answer to Alice Waters.

My guest today is Ravneet Gill

Ravneet is fast becoming one of the best known pastry chefs of her generation.

After completing a psychology degree, she studied at Le Cordon Bleu before working her way up the ranks in different pastry sections at some of the best restaurants in London - most notably, St. John, Llewelyn's, and Wild by Tart.

Ravneet published her first cookbook - in April 2020 entitled 'The Pastry Chef's Guide: The Secret to successful baking every time' as a handbook to dispel the fear around baking. And since then it looks as though her feet have barely touched the ground.

She joined both the Telegraph and Guardian Feast as their new baking columnist and starred as a judge on Channel 4’s Junior Bake Off alongside Liam Charles and host Harry Hill. A winner at the 2021 GQ Food & Drink Awards, this year she also launched The Damson Jelly Academy online cookery school

In 2018 she set up an organisation called Countertalk; a platform designed to help connect chefs, provide education and promote healthy work environments in the hospitality industry. The countertalk platform has gone from strength to strength over the last few years through Ravneet's hard work.

In addition to all of this, She has just brought out her second cookbook, Sugar, I Love You.

Ravneet has said:

‘Pastry is an art but it is also food so remember to stay in touch with your ingredients, reflect the seasons in your food and, for the love of God, don’t use strawberries in December.’

Daphne is an Emmy Award-winning television host, New York Times best selling author, chef, and entrepreneur focused on the worlds of food, beauty, wellness, fashion and media.

She also happens to be the mother of four children proving that you can have a very successful career and be a present mother.  

Daphne is the eldest daughter of the one and only Doctor Oz – possibly the most famous Doctor in America. But Daphne is a veteran TV personality herself, she spent six seasons as co-host of hit TV series "The Chew," has been a judge on Junior Masterchef and now as one of the co hosts of the Dish on Oz (a weekly series on The Dr. Oz Show), Daphne brings the latest in food news, family-friendly recipes and expert cooking tricks.

After university, Daphne received her chef's degree from the Natural Gourmet Institute and is a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. 

When asked what cooking means to her, Daphne has said: New memories, freedom and fun. And “At the end of the day, I want to have fun in my kitchen, I want it to be my kingdom, and I want that for my readers.”

Hello! We are back with a brand new season! I missed you all!

My guest today is Pierre Koffman.

Often described as one of the greatest chefs of all time. A living legend.

He has been a chef for over 50 years. His list of achievements are basically too long to mention. Born in the South West of France in 1948 he didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a chef and yet he has become the “chef of chefs, the chef all other chefs look up to”.

Combining a rustic gutsiness with haute cuisine, Pierre Koffmann knows how to combine tastes and flavours like no one else. He cooks the kind of food he likes to eat; the food of the French countryside and of his grandparent’s farmhouse kitchen in rural Gascony. He is one of only a handful of chefs to have achieved three Michelin stars.

While Pierre is renowned for his cooking expertise, after mastering his skills in the kitchen for 50 years, he is also known for his mentoring and championing of new talent in the industry.

My guest today is Tom Gozney.

Tom is an entrepreneur and designer, he is the founder of Gozney. Gozney for those who don’t know, make incredible outdoor ovens and the business really is taking the world by storm.

Tom started out designing a brick pizza oven for his back garden in 2008, and by 2014 was supplying professional ovens to some of the UK’s leading restaurants including Chewton Glen, River Cottage and pizza chain Franco Manca. But his domestic ovens have also collected a loyal following of very famous fans including Tom Aikens, Paul Hollywood, the founder of Instagram, Mike Krieger, and Richard Branson – who flew Tom out to his personal island: Necker Island to build one.

Tom had in his own words, a “colourful youth” and might not necessarily be the stereotypical entrepreneur. He moved from school to school after being expelled and was constantly told he would amount to nothing. After battling with alcohol and drug addiction, he used his passion for food to turn his life around and proved all his teachers wrong. Despite not really being one for material possessions, by the age of 29 he was able to fulfil one of his dreams and to buy himself his dream car - a Lamborghini. Not too shabby for someone teachers told just a few years earlier was on a road to nowhere.

For the season finale my guest is James Martin.

James has been a mainstay on our tv screens since the mid 1990’s. It’s safe to say that Saturday mornings wouldn’t be the same without him with his hugely popular shows on the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and now Saturday Mornings with James Martin on ITV.

He appeared on the Big Breakfast but it was arguably his role on Ready Steady Cook – a show that changed food television - that catapulted him to the kind of fame usually reserved for boy bands. At it’s peak 15 million people were tuning in to watch the show on Friday evenings and Martin with his trademark bandana and youthful good looks was a firm fan favourite.

But this was not a story of overnight success. It was built on years of hard work and perfecting his craft. James grew up on a farm in North Yorkshire where hard graft was a part of daily life from a young age. At the age of 8 he was working in restaurants and by the time he was 12 he had a catering company catering weddings. It’s no surprise then that by the age of 21 he achieved the covetable role of head chef at Hotel and Bistro du Vin in Winchester.

Alongside this, he’s written countless cook books, he’s set up a cookery school, run restaurants all over the world, gained his pilots license and has an envy inducing collection of vintage cars. He Recently won the Fortnum & Mason 2021 Personality of the Year, as voted for by the public

When James Martin was just seven he told his family he would be a head chef by the age of 30, drive a Ferrari when he was 35 and own his own restaurant by 40.

And whilst his “grandad told him to be quiet and get a proper bleedin’ job,” as it turned out, he made head chef at 21, bought a Ferrari three years later and opened his own bistro on a cruise ship when he was 26.

James has said, “Those dreams were odd then,” “It was a bit like Billy Elliot – unheard of. “But I knew that was what I wanted to do and that was that.”

My guest today this week is Julius Roberts.

Julius is a first generation millennial farmer and rising star of the food scene.

In 2016 he gave up working at the acclaimed restaurant Noble Rot in London - and Swapped the rat race for an idyllic life of pigs, goats and chickens instead.

His first foray into farming was a small-holding in rural Suffolk and then last year he moved with his family to a farm in Dorset.

His charm and humble approach to life on the farm have seen him amass an army of followers online as he shares the trials and tribulations of farm life alongside his menagerie of animals. Julius describes himself as a cook, farmer and gardener on a journey to self-sufficiency

In 2020 the times named him as one of the best Farmer - Foodies to follow on instagram. He says his aim is simple – to educate his audience on topics including animal welfare and seasonal cooking. These two sisters are junior doctors by day, cooks by night as they host sell-out supper clubs as part of their mission to put Burmese food on the culinary map. The sisters started their supperclub in 2013 after visiting Burma for the first time in 2012 and have since gone on to raise £10,000 for charities since then

My guest today is Tom Aikens.

Tom has been hailed as one of the best chefs of his generation, being the youngest British chef to hold two Michelin stars which he achieved by the tender age of just 26. His remarkable career has taken him to David Cavalier’s in Battersea, Pierre Koffman’s La Tante Claire, Pied-à-Terre and Joel Robuchon in Paris to name a few. Raised in Norfolk with a respect for fresh, seasonal ingredients, Tom is passionate about using the finest local and sustainable produce.

He has restaurants all over the world and at the start of 2020 we saw Tom return to the world of fine dining by opening the intimate, very personal twenty five cover restaurant Muse which has already won a Michelin star. When not cooking you will find Tom running marathons, cycling or running with Olympic torches.

He also works with several charities, most recent of which is Only a Pavement Away for which he has just brought out a new cookbook.

My guest today is Jo Malone CBE. I’m sure most of you listening will be familiar with her name. Your mind is probably instantly transported to a world of delicious scents and candles – two things synonymous with Jo.

Rachel is the rising star of the London vegan scene, her passion for vibrant, colourful food has seen her amass an army of followers online after she went vegan 7 years ago. She started her Youtube channel to show how just easy and delicious it was to cook vegan food and Since then she has gone from strength to strength . She won the Observer Food Monthly Rising Star award in 2019, has presented the Food Programme on Radio 4 and has just released her second cookbook.

My guest today is Michel Roux.

Michel is a legendary figure in the world of food – he’s a chef and restaurateur - he’s the Michelin starred owner of London’s iconic Le Gavroche, founded by his father and uncle in the 1960’s. Celebrating over 50 years in business the Roux’s have built a gastronomic dynasty.

His grandparents and their parents before them were charcutiers so food has always been a family affair. Perhaps it was inevitable that Michel would fall in love with food as his family had done before him – the story goes that he was practically born in a kitchen when his mother went into labour during service at his fathers restaurant.

Beyond restaurants, you may well know Michel from his extensive television career, he was a judge on Masterchef the professionals for 6 years , has been a regular on Saturday Kitchen and has fronted BBC 2’s Food and Drink. His latest project is his brilliant new series for Food Network – called Michel Roux’s French Country Cooking.

My guest today is Romy Gill MBE Romy is an award winning self-taught British-Indian chef and food writer and broadcaster. She has written for publications including the guardian, the telegraph and the evening standard. She’s a regular on TV with her appearances as guest judge on Celebrity Masterchef. She is a judge on the BBC’s food and farming awards and in 2016 she was awarded an MBE in the Queens 90th birthday honours list.

Romy’s style of Indian cooking combines Indian and British cuisine; she combines spices and flavours that she grew up with in India, with ingredients that she was only introduced to when she moved to the UK. Nadiya won the Great British Bake Off in 2015 and won not only the competition but our hearts in the process, securing her the position of National Treasure.

My guest today is Chris Smalling.

Chris is a Manchester United and England International footballer. He’s been playing professional football for the last 8 years having played more than 300 games for Man United. He talks to me about turning his dream to become a footballer into reality and what it’s like to represent your country on the pitch.

In January 2018 Chris made the decision to turn vegan for a number of different reasons which we discuss. He is a pioneer of plant based eating in sport and is part of a growing list of vegan sports stars – including formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, boxing champion David Haye and tennis star Venus Williams.

I cant quite believe it but Chris is the first professional sportsman we’ve had on Desert Island Dishes and although it may come as a bit of a surprise to a lot of you - I am a big football fan, I love watching it and my husband is a huge Manchester united fan so we made a day trip of it and went to the Man U training ground to meet with Chris.

You may remember Chetna from The Great British Bake Off Season 5 where she made it through to the semi-finals and really stood out for her exciting use of flavour, creativity with her dishes and the fact that many of these dishes were completely new to her.

She has gone on to write three cookbooks all showcasing the food of India in different and exciting ways. She has her own successful Youtube Channel “Food with Chetna” where she shares her love of cooking all inspired by Indian cuisine.

Of Indian food Chetna says:

Originally from Ireland, she’s been cooking professionally for 20 years. She is the author of 7 cookbooks – her latest one Clodagh’s Suppers came out at the start of this year and is really brilliant.

In Spring 2018 she became the weekly food columnist for the Evening Standard and she has regular slots on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch in the UK, The Today Show and the Rachael Ray show in America plus several more in Canada.

Her most recent TV show, Clodagh's Irish Food Trails gained more than 15 million viewers on PBS in America and has really helped to establish her in America.

I only recently met Clodagh after following her career from afar when I got to go to the most delicious dinner party at her house. She really is the hostess with the mostess – there was dancing between each course and the most delicious food. My guest today is Amelia Freer

Amelia is a one of the leading nutritional therapist in the U.K. She has treated hundreds of clients through her private practice and clients rave about her approach to nutirion which is motivational, extreremely knowdeleable and done in a way which makes incporpating healthy food into every day life, enjoyable.

Her client list is very impressive as some of her clients have included Victoria Beckham, Sam Smith, Boy George and James Corden.

She is also the author of 3 best selling books.

Amelia divides her time between her busy practice in central London and her home in Wiltshire, where she says you will most likely find her pottering around in her vegetable garden. My guest today is Laura Jackson

Laura is a TV presenter, a designer of clothes and homewares. In fact she has been described by Work Work Work - as a creative polymath with a career spanning food, fashion and TV.

Since 2014 she has started a supperclub with her work wife – the other half of Jackson and Levine - Radio 1’s DJ Alice Levine. The pair brought out their gorgeous cookbook last year in 2017 and have since gone on to design several ranges for Habitat.

So this is a lovely episode – we recorded in Laura’s dreamy house – which I’ve seen many pictures of but its even better in the flesh and her gorgeous whippet Barry sat with his head on my lap the entire recording which made it even better. We talk everything from cooking disasters, the best restaurants in London, the joy of cake batter and why we love bread.

My guest today is Felicity Cloake.

Felicity is an award winning freelance journalist and writer. You may know her from her infamous Guardian column How to Make the Perfect:” or perhaps from her column in the New Statesman or perhaps from her many other writing features.

She has written 5 books – with more in the pipeline. Her writing and recipe testing is meticulous and has made Felicity one of the biggest names in food writing today with her recipes being some of the most trustworthy around. I was so excited to sit down with Felicity this week and when I described her as one of the biggest names in food writing I could see her immediately recoil at that because she’s very modest but it’s true and I stand by it.

To back up my statement I can tell you that she has been crowned the “Nation’s Taster in Chief” and Jan Moir says: “She oozes trustworthiness the way a figgy pudding oozes spicy fumes” which both Felicity and I decided was a pretty impressive accolade.

There’s all sorts in this one – from dishwahers, to chicken kievs, melon ballers, eyeballs and everything in between. On that note: I would love to know where you lot stand on melon ballers? Now I’m not saying they are an essential piece of kit – but who doesn’t love little tiny balls of melon??

My guest today is Gino D’Acampo

Born into a large family in Napoli in the South of Italy – he came to London at the age of 19 back in 1995.

You may know him from his regular appearances on This Morning where he cooks up a storm, or perhaps from his early days on Ready Steady Cook. He’s a TV regular, a best selling author and a successful restaurauteur. He has written over 16 cookbooks, holds six Guiness world records (one of them is for walking on custard) and he was crowned King of the Jungle in the 9th series of I’m a Celebrity Get me out of here.

Gino is often described as the UK’s favourite Italian chef.

He has over 40 restaurants in the UK and he’s currently got 3 television series on our screens at the moment alone. He’s just published a new book Gino’s Italian Adriatic Escape.

I thought I knew Gino from watching him cook on TV but I learnt so much about him in this episode and finding out about how he got to where he is today was so much fun, not least discovering that he was George Michael's private chef! Which is very cool.

You may know him by his pen name – Rocket and Squash.

Ed gave up a high flying career in law around 6 years ago to pursue a career in food and I think this is a good listen for anyone thinking about changing career whether into the world of food or beyond.

Ed is the author of the hugely popular and award winning website Rocket and Squash – which is sort of a smorgasbord of delicious things from recipes, to restaurant reviews and cookery news. He has now written 2 cookbooks to much acclaim and regularly writes for a multitude of publications. Magnus is the head chef of the Faviken restaurant in Northern Sweden. He initially joined as a sommelier and within a year he had taken over the running of the restaurant.

My guest today is Saliha Mahmood Ahmed

Saliha was the winner of Masterchef last year in 2017 and she won whilst also working full time as a Junior Doctor – often turning up to film the show straight off the back of a night shift. In addition she also has a young son – so the whole thing was really rather impressive.

Known for her big and bold flavours – Saliha wowed the judges with food steeped in her family’s heritage. She’s written her first cookbook – Khazana – meaning treasure trove and it certainly is that.

In an interview with the Times she was quoted as having said:

“The other day when I was tired I gave my husband a jacket potato and I had one too, and I felt really miserable afterwards. I thought, ‘this surely can't be life!"

I’ve learnt something from each and every episode of desert island dishes – and for none is that more true than today’s episode where I discovered so much I really had little to no idea about before and that made it really fun! Prue is a restaurateur, a writer of both novels and cookbooks, a business woman, a TV presenter and of course judge on the Great British Bake Off.

A champion of food and a passionate charity supporter - there was many great quotes from Prue on the record – whole articles dedicated to Prue quotes but one that stuck out for me was on food trends in the Telegraph where she was quoted as having said:

“I don’t give a toss for drizzles and fizzles, that’s not food. I like real food.”

Now if you watched last weeks episode of Bake Off – you will have heard Prue say she never wanted to taste chocolate again. In light of that I took the somewhat bold step of baking her some brownies. I was expecting her just to put them in her bag but she ate them in front of me and I instantly got really quite panicky and nervous – but I pleased to report that she’s very polite and said they were really good. There may even have been two really’s…but hey who’s counting!

It’s safe to say that Theo is one of the nation's most beloved chefs.

Inspired by the food of his childhood trips to Italy, Theo has developed a life-long passion for Italian food. He spent 17 years at The River Café and was Head Chef when they won their Michelin star.

In 2006 he left to set up his own eponymous restaurant at the Intercontinental Hotel in London to great critical acclaim.

An interview online states: “In a world full of swagger, quick tempers and massive egos, Chef Theo Randall, is a breath of fresh air.”

We recorded today’s episode in Theo’s restaurant at the Intercontinental in London where they were preparing for a busy days service. Theo is a legend in the food world and I think there’s always a slight assumption that seriously successful people might not be that nice – but if that is how the theory goes Theo completely proved that wrong.

Rachel is a British cook, writer and broadcaster. She rose to fame in 2012 when she published The Little Paris Kitchen. Later, The Little Paris Kitchen: Cooking with Rachel Khoo, was commissioned as her first TV series with the BBC.

The book became a best seller, millions of people watched her on TV and the rest as they say, is history. Rachel has gone on to write many more books with her 6th book – The Little Swedish Kitchen having just come out. She has presented and created many more TV series and she is firmly on the map as a well known TV personality and chef.

As if that weren’t enough, Rachel is also the founder and editor-in-chief of online lifestyle magazine Khoollect.

Rachel describes herself as a ”food creative with a fresh approach to all things edible”.

My  guest today is Laura Freeman.

Laura is an art critic, a writer and an author.

Her book which came out earlier this year called The Reading Cure is a very brave and thoughtful memoir about how reading about food helped her on her road to recovery from anorexia.

Laura is a truly excellent writer – having gained a double first from Cambridge and her book has had an amazing reaction.

A review in the independent said of her book :

“The Reading Cure is the work of a true-blue bibliophile, and it's impossible not to be seduced by Freeman's love of prose. It's essential reading not just for those who love food, but words.”

This was a different kind of chat in many ways – but one that I think it really important and really interesting. We do all have different relationships with food and I think its important to explore them and to talk about them and I learnt a lot from Laura plus there are some delicious goodies in here too.

Food is so much more than just the food itself – which is what this podcast talks about a lot -  I for one - remember my life through the meals I’ve eaten and the best moments with friends, or celebrating happy occasions or holidays are often centred around meals, around food and it’s such a central character in the story of so many of our lives. However, it’s wrong to think that everyone’s relationship with food is straight forwards and obviously everyone is different – there is no completely shared experience.  Laura has struggled with her appetite for food but her appetite for reading never went away and ultimately it was this that saved her and that makes for an incredibly interesting read and a very different outlook on food which I hope you will enjoy!

Jenny founded Rubies in the Rubble back in 2011 which started out as a stall in Borough Market and now her products are stocked in Waitrose, Selfridges, Harrods and many many more places.

Jenny studied maths at university before working for a hedge fund in the City for two years. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do with her degree, but knew she wanted to start something of her own and do something she was passionate about.

After coming across the fact that half of all the food we produce is never used and yet billions of people don’t have enough to eat, Rubies in the Rubble was born.

I first came across Jenny and her amazing business years ago now and genuinely just thought it was the best idea ever for a business and it’s been so inspiring to see her go from strength to strength. I just love speaking to these amazing entrepreneurs and hearing how they got to where they are – I find it so inspiring and I know you will enjoy hearing from Jenny – the condiment queen. That’s not her official title, but I’m going to go with it.

I mean, isn’t it a cool business? I love how the power of a word – from chutney to relish can change a business. You hear that kind of thing all the time – I mean I guess it’s the whole premise behind marketing but it’s kind of fun when you hear about it in action. I can vouch for the deliciousness of the spicy tomato chutney which is genuinely amazing – so so good in a sandwich, and with just about anything. It’s so fresh and well it’s just great.

I almost edited out her recommendation of Eat Tokyo which happens to be one of my favourites but I like you all so wouldn’t deprive you of an excellent recommendation like that!

Within weeks, she was signed up on Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen apprentice programme. She went on to be part of Jamie’s food team has cooked for royalty and politicians.

She has written not one, not two but three best selling books and has been hailed The Queen of Greens.

Annabel was awarded an MBE in June 2006 in the Queen's Birthday Honours for her work in the field of child nutrition.

She has been described as the undisputed category queen in baby food and It’s not for nothing that Annabel is known as the Princess of the Purees.

Martha is a chef and cookbook author who is famous for her imaginative approach to food and her historical research into Mexican food traditions. Having written 8 cookbooks she is passionate about food that shows Mexico’s spirit and sense of identity.

She recently opened her restaurant Ella Canta in London after the success of her restaurant in Mexico City which is regularly listed in Latin America’s top 50 restaurants.

It really comes as no surprise that Martha is one of Mexico’s most famous celebrity chefs and has a starring role on Top Chef México, when she says such brilliant things as..

My guest today is Ruth Rogers.

Ruth is the Chef and co founder of the River Café . She is without doubt, one of the most respected and celebrated chefs in the world.

In 1987, Ruth, along with her friend and business partner, Rose Grey opened the River Café in what was then a fairly unfashionable part of London in what used to be a warehouse on the bank of the River Thames.

The pair became famous for simple, authentic Italian food and 30 years later the River Café has grown to be one of the most famous restaurants in the world. Quite an achievement for two friends who weren’t trained chefs, and who started out with a space big enough for just 9 tables.

To mark 30 years of the river café, Ruth has brought out a new book. River café 30. Of the book Ruth writes: ‘Change is timeless. A good restaurant is alive. It lives, It grows and so do its recipes. We have grown. We have a new vision, but the same conclusion: with good ingredients and a strong tradition change and recipes can be timeless. “

*This was recorded back in December but it's one of my favourites so I wanted to share it with you again for anyone that missed it. Forgive the Christmassey references at the beginning, I hope it doesnt make you feel too discombobulated but Levi is a superstar, and I didnt want you to have missed out by not hearing it.

My castaway this week is Levi Roots.

Levi was born Keith Valentine Graham in Jamaica. After his parents moved to the UK when he was 4, he was brought up by his grandparents until he eventually moved to Britain at the age of 11.

He shot to fame in 2007 by appearing on Dragon’s Den with his famous Reggae Reggae sauce. He wowed the dragon’s and managed to secure a £50,000 investment from Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh.

Within 4 weeks his Reggae Reggae sauces were outselling Heinze tomato ketchup in Sainsbury’s and since then his business has gone from strength to strength. He now has so many products ranging from sauces, to snacks, to seasonings and ready meals. He’s written 7 books, released 4 albums and opened a successful restaurant. He does a lot of work with the Prince’s Trust and is a key figure in the Brixton community.

We recorded this at Levi’s restaurant in Westfield Stratford so you can hear a little of the hustle and bustle of the restaurant in the background which I kind of like.

Levi has a whole host of delicious Desert Island Dishes in his selection and oh my goodness – Levi’s final desert island dish sounds like complete heaven. I love the sound of the porridge his grandmother used to make, and his choice of sandwich was not what I was expecting at all. I think Levi’s story is really inspiring, and he talks so eloquently about his time in prison and how to worked to turn his life around with huge success.

I just thought there were so many interesting and inspiring nuggets in there.

My guests today are The Hairy Bikers, whose real names are Dave Myers and Simon King.

Dave previously worked as a make-up artist, for the BBC where he specialised in prosthetics. Si worked for many years as an Assistant Director and Locations Manager for film and television, including the Harry Potter films.

The pair met on the set of a TV drama 23 years ago and discovered that they found they shared a love of riding motorbikes, cooking – and eating. Since then their popularly has soared, they have gone on to have countess TV shows and they have written more than 20 successful cookbooks which is pretty impressive!

She is a trained NHS midwife and her first book, “How to grow a baby and push it out” was unbelievably successful with 3 reprints before it was even published. With it Clemmie has helped thousands of women around the world. She has just released her 2nd book – A journal of how to grow a baby.

She is the mother of 4 daughters and she’s paving the way and flying the flag for a more honest approach to how parenthood is portrayed online.

I do a lot of cooking for new and expectant parents and my weeks are filled with filling their fridges and freezers with delicious things so that they don’t have to think about cooking. My guest today is Tommy Banks

Tommy is a Michelin-starred chef and Great British Menu champion.

He is the head chef at his family restaurant – the black swan, in 0ldstead North Yorkshire. He started cooking at the age of 17 and at just 24 he became the youngest chef in Britain at the time to win a Michelin star.

Last year Tommy's restaurant The Black Swan was voted #1 Restaurant in the World by Tripadvisor Traveller's Choice Award, the first time since the award launched that a UK restaurant has won.

Tommy has just released his first cookbook, entitled Roots, which is they say, perfect for “foodies, foragers and cookbook collectors”.

My guest today is Tim Anderson.

Tim, at the age of just 26 was the youngest ever winner of Masterchef. Since winning back in 2011, Tim has carved out a very impressive career in food working as a chef, a consultant and a food writer. He is, much to my enormous envy and admiration a staple of the Radio 4 food panel show The Kitchen Cabinet.

Tim has said his proudest career moment has to be the launch of his first cookery book Nanban: Japanese Soul Food and the opening of his acclaimed restaurant of the same name, in the heart of Brixton.

During his time on Masterchef, the judges declared that Tim gave them the ‘best culinary explosion” they had ever seen on the show.

My guest today is Uyen Luu.

Uyen Luu is a writer, cook, photographer and food stylist. She runs supper clubs and the UK’s only dedicated Vietnamese cooking classes in her Hackney studio. She writes and blogs about food, recipes and travel. She’s worked with a whole host of amazing people including Raymond Blanc and Jamie Oliver to name just a few. Her cookbook, My Vietnamese Kitchen was a roaring success and you know her food is incredible when there is a tweet from Ottolenghi declaring himself to be the luckiest person alive as he was about to eat her food.

We talk everything from escaping to London from war torn Vietnam, the delights of school lunches and spam fritters. We talk about starting a business straight out of school and all the good things that can come from that business not necessarily succeeding. We discuss the changing face of Hackney, pioneering a food movement and the poet who makes the best crème caramel in Vietnam.

I’ve been lucky enough to go to Uyen’s supperclubs and they are just amazing and whilst I haven’t managed to go to one of her cooking classes I am going in June – so if you’re keen you should come along too! Her food is beyond amazing and it’s so fun to learn a different type of cuisine. Top tip about using the fish sauce in Italian cooking, I will definitely be trying that.

Please can we also take a moment to appreciate the idea of tuna sashimi with chips and wasabi mayonnaise? That sounds like heaven on a plate.

In 2005 Thomasina was the first winner of the revamped masterchef. She is now a Chef and food writer. She is also the owner of Wahaca, the seriously successful chain of Mexican restaurants.

In total she employs around 1500 people, she has three young children and is basically super -woman!

Simon is probably best known as the co-presenter of Channel 4's Sunday Brunch.

Simon has presented a whole host of different TV programmes over the years, and he’s also written five very successful books and he regularly writes for food magazines.

He is a chef/owner of nine restaurants in the north west of England and one in Dubai. Many people may not know that Simon has a degree in fashion and textile design and actually used to be a textile designer and ceramic decorator.

This week's guest is Ed Kimber

You may well know him by his pen name: The Boy Who Bakes.

Ed Won the first ever season of GBBO Way back in 2010.

He has gone on to do all manner of exciting things since then. He’s written 3 cookery books, he’s worked in the pastry section at Le Manoir under Raymond Blanc and has created recipes for dozens of the countries best loved magazines. He’s taught cooking to the masses, he’s gone on various tv shows….he’s done the lot.

He is a man of many talents, he’s a baker, a writer and it turns out, he is basically a candlestick maker. He also incidentally makes the best macarons in town.

There is nothing Ed doesn’t know about baking and I learnt a lot in this episode. We find out about Japan’s baking scene which as it turns out is pretty happening and about Ed’d love of travelling and how he gets inspiration for all his cooking.

We also discover what exactly happens when you win The Great British Bake Off and find out how you make it as a freelance baker and food writer. In this episode Ed gives us his take on the GBBO’s move to Channel 4 and we find out what he really thinks of Pru.

My guest today is Ben Branson

Ben is the founder of Seedlip – Seedlip is a non-alcoholic spirit and it’s the first of its kind. Served in gorgeous clear bottles, with beautiful branding, with names such as Garden 108 and Spice 94, it has all the romance and allure of a gin. Except it is most definitely not gin.

It’s beyond clever. Four years ago tee-totaller Ben started tinkering in his kitchen, buying a copper still and experimenting with herbal remedies. After hours of experimenting, Seedlip was born. The first 1,000 bottles sold out in just three weeks, the next 1,000 sold out within only three days and the next 1,000 in an incredible thirty minutes online. Pretty impressive stuff!

Fast forwards to today and Seedlip’s success is the kind that most start ups can only dream of. They are stocked in Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, high-end bars including at The Savoy and in over 100 Michelin-starred restaurants including The Ledbury, The Fat Duck and far too many to even mention. Drinks giant Diageo even wanted in on the action and invested very early on in Seedlip’s journey.But behind every fairytale story is another more interesting saga of hard work and most entrepreneurs will tell you that there’s no such thing as an overnight success . Ben bottled and labelled the first 1,000 bottles himself. He’s on the road more than 240 days a year and it’s not uncommon for him to attend 20 events in 20 days.Ben is ridiculously talented and it’s just been amazing to see his success – so inspiring! He really does have the word peas tattooed onto his knuckles – what can he say, he really loves peas. Margie’s guest this week is Rhiannon Lambert.

Rhiannon is a Nutriionist with her own clinic on Harley Street. ,She imparts evidence-based health advice to a whole range of different clients – from young women to new mums and professional athletees.

A popular face across social media, newspaper and on TV as she has consulted behind the scenes on the Masterchef series. She also works alongside doctors to demonstrate the influence nutrition can have on illness and recovery.

So basically, she knows an awful lot about nutrition and having a good relationship with food to say the least. Her debut book Re-Nourish has just come out which is very exciting and is packed full of great looking dishes.

Before all this Rhiannon won Classic FM’s Singer of the Year competition at the age of seventeen and went on to perform with Alfie Boe later that same year. She trained at the Royal Academy of Music. And somehow she still manages, amidst everything else she does, she still finds time to sing!

So basically she’s a woman of many talents. I really like Rhiannon’s approach to food. It’s not about cutting things out of your diet or doing anything crazy, it’s simply a case of a little of what you fancy. Moderation being the key, which is, I admit, sometimes harder than others.

Crumble seems to be one of Rhiannon’s favourite dishes which I can completely get on board with. A great crumble is hard to beat, and I like her mum’s addition of the oats in the topping. I do this too and it’s delicious.

It was also a relief to know that Rhiannon snacks. As someone who seems to spend her life perpetually grazing I was very happy to hear that such is Rhiannon’s love of snacking, that she keeps a spoon in her handbag just in case she needs to eat a yoghurt. This sounds like a very sensible use of a handbag and may even entice me back to using a bag rather than just my pockets which is a habit I seem to have gotten into lately for reasons I can’t really explain.

Her mum sounds like a fantastic cook and her childhood was filled with spaghetti bolognaise, crumbles, shepherds pies and even the occasional stir fry. All very normal and delicious sounding.

I like the sound of her favourite sandwich being the pear, gorgonzola and roasted peppers – that sounds lovely or she also talked of sardines on toast which is a simple but delicious sounding choice. I don’t think sardines get enough air time, they are really good for you, and taste great!

I’m going to have to look up what a Taiwanese porridge consists of as it sounds like it would be right up my street and I might even experiment with the scrambled tofu which sounds interesting!

Anyone who serves two puddings at a dinner party sounds like someone I would get on with. And I only hope it’s not an either or situation and one might be allowed to have both.

Margie’s guest today is Daisy Buchanan

Daisy is quite simply a word wizard. She’s a writer, an author, and a journalist.

Her writing covers everything from arts, entertainment, and women's issues. She contributes to a whole host of publications including Esquire, Grazia, the Guardian, Look magazine, Marie Claire and the telegraph to name literally just a few!

Daisy was Grazia Magazine’s resident agony aunt, winning Dating Journalist of the Year

Daisy has written 3 books including the hugely successful How To Be a Grown Up and she’s “One of the Funniest Women On Twitter” according to the Huffington Post.

This is a delicious episode packed full of so many great ideas and things to try out. Roasting broccoli in the same way you would roast potatoes but with lots of garlic and chilli sounds heavenly and definitely something I am going to be making. As do the brussell sprouts, they sound fab. Dinner parties at Daisy’s sound like a very delicious affair and is something I definitely need to try and wangle an invite to that’s for sure.

We find out just how fundamentally life changing a toasted cheese sandwich really is and how many miles you are willing to move in order to be near a really great one.

Importantly Daisy uncovers the difference between a roux and a béchamel…thank god I knew the answer to that one or my cheffy crednetials would have flown out of the window. There is talk of chilli chorizo mac and cheese and that is a phrase that has stayed with me, so I know what I will be cooking this weekend. Yum. You can’t go wrong with mac and cheese, in any way, shape or form and I like the sound of this addition very much.

I thought she was very romantic choosing a dish her husband makes as her final dish before being cast off to the desert island…although we may have to work on the name…as “my husbands eggs” doesn’t have quite the right ring to it and probably isn’t something I would be in a rush to order. Although the eggs do sound delicious and are something I will be adding to my repertoire of eggs to be sure.

Please tell me that we two are not alone in our love of plane food? I was worried to admit this secret love, but I can hide it no longer. I’m Margie and I enjoy plane food, especially the instant smash. Please tell me you like it too?

Daisy is a delight and her food sounds fantastic. You can tell when someone talks about food just how important it is to them, and in the words of Daisy, “nourishment isn’t just about nutritional value, but finding the true joy in food and losing ourselves to sensory overload.”

My guest today is Mark Hix.

Renowned chef and restaurateur, Mark is widely recognised as the reviver of modern British cuisine and is famous for his focus on a straightforward interpretation of British cooking. He is without a doubt one of London’s most eminent restauranteurs.

Mark launched his first restaurant – Hix Oyster & Chop House in Farringdon, in 2008, after having spent 17 years as chef director at Caprice Holdings. He followed the opening of his first restaurant with Hix at Browns hotel, Hix Soho and the chicken and steak restaurants, Tramshed in Shoreditch and Hixter Bankside.

In February 2016, Mark teamed up with artist Damien Hirst to open Pharmacy 2 at the Newport Street Gallery in Vauxhall.

Somehow amongst all of that Mark has written 10 cookbooks, he has a weekly food column and Mark hosts an annual food festival in Lyme Regis, Food Rocks to showcase the best producers and suppliers in Dorset and nearby.

It’s been said about Mark by none other than Tracey Emin, “What’s amazing about his success is how nice he is.’

This is an exciting episode with one of the most famous chefs and restauranteurs in London. We find out about the dishes that have shaped Mark’s life, his business highs and even some lows. We discover he has an usual love of ceramic jugs and we find out which restaurant in the world he likes so much he wishes it were his.

My guest today is Tommy Clarke,

Tommy is a world renowned photographer specialising in stunning aerial shots taken all over the world.

Tommy grew up on the south coast of England in Dorset and spent nearly every childhood holiday by the beach. This led to, in his own words, a deep interest of the interaction between water and land and how people connect with that location.

However it was when he was living in Australia that he first took to the skies and shot aerial photographs of Bondi Beach with stunning results. Since then Tommy has travelled the world as a photographer shooting everywhere from Iceland, to St Tropez and Mexico.

This year was a big one for Tommy with Sell-out exhibitions, his own gallery opening in London and a swimwear collection for M&S.

I just love hearing how these amazing people got to where they are today – and I think its really inspiring and encouraging to hear that there isn’t just one way. The road is often winding – there are ups and downs, but if you love what you do and work hard – you find what you are meant to do and it works out in the end.

In a little corrections corner just before you hear todays episode – I should point out a super soaker is a water pistol – and far from a Christmas sandwich. Having watched friends about 9 hundred million times and declaring to my boyfriend just the other day it would possibly be my Mastermind topic – I am hanging my head in SHAME that I couldn’t think of the moist maker. Such a good episode of friends – Ross gets sacked when he goes into a complete fury when someone steals his Christmas sandwich from the fridge….but I mean who wouldn’t get cross about that?

I love that the Christmas sandwich is Tommy’s favourite sandwich. So apt for this time of year and not remotely on purpose, although perhaps I should pretend it was! I love that roast chicken plays another starring role in someone’s childhood growing up – and I love the tradition his family had of coming together over Sunday lunch to catch up on the week and find out what everyone had been up to.

The best meal he’s ever had sounds impossibly dreamy. Staying in a beach hut down near Christ Church – he went fishing with his dad, wading off shore with the sea up to their knees and beers in their pockets. They caught sea bass and then went back to the beach to barbecue them. The setting sounds perfect, as the Sun was going down and music was playing. He describes it as perfection. And it sounds gorgeous. And a far flung cry from cold and frosty London!

Sounds like we all need to be hankering for an invite to a dinner party round at Tommy’s as he says he whips up a great beef Wellington. Although don’t hold out for pudding as he will probably be too exhausted by the effort of the beef to muster up much strength to provide a pudding. Although I’ve never heard anyone complain about a Gu chocolate pudding.

My guest today is Tessa Cook

Tessa is the co founder of Olio the free food sharing app.

Olio was launched back in February 2015 by Tessa and her co founder Sasha Celestial-One. The two founders met at business school in California. They launched the app just a few months after having the idea and gave themselves a year to make it work agreeing that if it hadn’t taken off by then they would go back to their day jobs.

Tessa is a farmer’s daughter and grew up on farm where she learnt the value of food from a very young age and became passionate about food waste. Before launching Olio, Tessa worked in various managing director roles across retail, media and the financial services.

The idea for Olio came to her in a moment of inspiration and was a genuine lightbulb moment. One of those moments most people only dream of, where the idea seems so obvious you cant believe it hasn’t been done before.

After teaming up with her business partner Saasha, the two wasted very little time and launched the app just 4 months later. Fast forward 2 ½ years and they now have 330,000 people using their app and over 15,000 volunteers helping them with their mission.

I think this is a really inspiring listen and you cant fail to learn something from Tessa’s story. She recommend the book, “The Lean StartUp” by Eric Ries which I can recommend too and there are some great podcast recommendations in there for entrepreneurs, including one of my favbourites, “How I Built This” with Guy Raz.

I love the Tessa talked of bubble and squeak, which is no where near as popular as it should be, and such a good dish when you are doing a fridge raid but still want something warming and delicious. Her triple choice of sandwiches was right up my street. A chip buttie, a bacon butie and a boiled egg sandwich…it doesn’t get more British than that!

I love that Tessa cooked for all the guests at her wedding. Such a lovely thing to do - I wonder if I should attempt that too?? She made a delicious veggie filled lasagne and a really great sounding lime and ginger cheesecake which sounded easy and delicious: a winning combination.

I think it is Nigella Lawson’s mother who celebrated a second Christmas on Midsummer’s Eve and I think it’s the most lovely idea and one that I might actually adopt too. How fun would that be? Tessa seemed enamoured with the idea anyway as her final desert island dish was an easy one for her to make as she loves a traditional Christmas lunch. Very apt for this time of year, and we didn’t even plan that.

What wasn’t quite so traditional was Tessa’s way of having Christmas pudding. She has it with brandy butter. So far, so traditional. Then she adds golden syrup which is unusual but I can definitely get on board with. Then! She tops that with a generous drizzle of white sauce. A white sauce made with butter and flour and milk….very unusual!

I loved her idea of freezing the smoothies into lollies for the children (and for the adults) and adding greek yoghurt to the smoothies is a great shout. I am being honest when I say I don’t think I’ve met a bad smoothie which does make them rather fun to make as you know you can bung things in, use up left overs and it will taste great!

My guest this week is Nadine Levy Redzepi.

Nadine has just published her first cookbook called Downtime: Deliciousness At Home. Nadine knows a thing or two about amazing food, as she is married to Rene Redzepi, co founder and chef at Noma. Noma is thought by many to be the world's best restaurant and Rene is commonly referred to as the King of Food.

She has lived in Portugal, France and England as a child before moving to Denmark with her mother which made me excited to hear her childhood food memories. She now lives with Rene and their three daughters in Copenhagen.

Nadine has been inspired by a life long love of food and has created a very personal collection of recipes to inspire the every day. This is a book for everyone and through Nadine's reassuring and friendly way of writing she ensures that even the most timid cooks will be able to create sensational dishes without getting stressed.

This is a genuinely lovely book written in such a friendly and reassuring way. The recipes are delicious but not daunting and it's full of great tips and tricks to get you feeling more confident in the kitchen. Poaching eggs can be one of those things people get a bit afraid of, and Nadine has a great tip in there for how to poach them perfectly each time....genius. She even gives us the perfect technique for porridge which I need to try. Nadine says to simply make the porridge by bringing the oats and milk to the boil, and then to remove them from the heat immediately and allowing to sit for 10 minutes. She swears this is perfect porridge everytime and do you know what? I believe her. I mean it would be foolish not to.

Since meeting Nadine I am now hooked on her favourite sandwich! Mortadella is one of my favourites and I think it's underrated. The simple combination with the rye bread, cream cheese and tomatoes is just perfect. I like it with lots salt and pepper and a small drizzle of olive oil, just as Nadine says.

Nadine has cooked for some of the biggest names in food, from world-renowned chefs, to top restaurant critics and everything in between. I can't imagine her every getting into a flap in the kitchen. As she points out, to her these people are just her friends, so she feels more relaxed then perhaps you or I would if we were asked to cook for them. But still. Because of this you feel very reassured when reading her book and her recipes that you are in safe hands.

We find out what Nadine cooked for Rene the first time she cooked for the King of Food, which didn't go according to plan in her mind but luckily he loved it, and we discover what the seal the deal pasta he cooked for her consisted of.

Margie’s castaway this week is Levi Roots.

Levi was born Keith Valentine Graham in Jamaica. After his parents moved to the UK when he was 4, he was brought up by his grandparents until he eventually moved to Britain at the age of 11.

He shot to fame in 2007 by appearing on Dragon’s Den with his famous Reggae Reggae sauce. He wowed the dragon’s and managed to secure a £50,000 investment from Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh.

Within 4 weeks his Reggae Reggae sauces were outselling Heinze tomato ketchup in Sainsbury’s and since then his business has gone from strength to strength. He now has so many products ranging from sauces, to snacks, to seasonings and ready meals. He’s written 7 books, released 4 albums and opened a successful restaurant. He does a lot of work with the Prince’s Trust and is a key figure in the Brixton community.

We recorded this at Levi’s restaurant in Westfield Stratford so you can hear a little of the hustle and bustle of the restaurant in the background which I kind of like.

Levi has a whole host of delicious Desert Island Dishes in his selection and oh my goodness – Levi’s final desert island dish sounds like complete heaven. I love the sound of the porridge his grandmother used to make, and his choice of sandwich was not what I was expecting at all. I think Levi’s story is really inspiring, and he talks so eloquently about his time in prison and how to worked to turn his life around with huge success.

I just thought there were so many interesting and inspiring nuggets in there.

Margie’s castaway this week is Candice Brown.

This is a lovely episode, chatting to the wonderful and impossibly glamorous Great British Bake Off winner Candice. It was yet another opportunity for me to obsess over all things Bake Off. Candice was the winner of The Great British Bake Off 2016.

Born in North London, Candice grew up in the pub that her parents ran – the very pub that she sculpted out of gingerbread for her famous showstopper on the show.

Taught to bake by her grandmother, Candice makes the kind of food you really want to eat. With her degree in Sport, PE and Community Studies, Candice was a secondary school teacher when she applied for GBBO and managed to juggle the two even during filming. Candice has now taken a break from teaching, has realeased her first cook book called Comfort and is currently starring on Dancing on Ice.

It has been said of Candice, “if you are what you eat, no wonder Candice brown is so sweet”!

We discover that both Candice and I have quite a severe mac and cheese obsession. She has lots of delicious dishes in her selection today including a first time appearance for her choice of sandwich. Let me tell you that recording this in the afternoon on a Friday was a mistake. Big mistake. Huge. I’m surprised you couldn’t hear my tummy rumbling on the recording.

I thought it was really interesting to hear how you go from winning the GBBO to turning it into your career and what that process looks like. Candice’s luxury item makes me laugh! I just love the thought of Candace sort of masquerading as a coconut on the island – covered in her coconut lotion.

My castaway today is Jasmine Hemsley

Jasmine is a well being author and chef. She is one half of the hugely successful Hemlsey and Hemsley brand which she runs with her sister. Together they have amassed an army of loyal followers, they have a popular blog, a range of products, they’ve written 2 cookbooks, they have a café in Selfridges AND they even had their very own show on Channel 4.

Last week Jasmines first solo cookbook, East by West came out which is all about Eastern wisdom for western wellbeing and is packed full of delicious looking recipes which all follow the Ancient holistic healing system of Ayuverda.

I have to admit Ayuverda was all new to me but I definitely learnt some things and found some good food for thought in there which I hope you will too.

There’s some really delicious food in today’s episode so I wouldn’t recommend listening on an empty stomach, but I mean, when is that a good idea?? I love the sound of the of the chicken soup for the soul. Chicken soup really is the remedy for everything. Whether you have a cold, you need a hug, or you just need some comfrt. I love the thought that countries all over the world have their own versions and I loved hearing about all the amazing food inspiredby Jasmine's Filipino heritage. The Filipino version of a chicken soup is called Tinolo and is chicken soup with lots of ginger, which sounds delicious.

I also fell in love with the sound of "Adobo" – the dish Jasmine described as chicken cooked in lemon juice, garlic and soy sauce. That sauce defitinitely sounds like something I need to have a go at as it's would be a very versatile sauce you could use on anything. A useful sauce to have up your sleeve, one might say. Though probably not in the literal sense, as that would just be plain silly.

I'm sorry to say I did not actually discover the answer to bloating. But, the good news is that Jasmine says it's in the bookso I am reading the book!

Jenny founded Rubies in the Rubble back in 2011 which started out as a stall in Borough Market and now her products are stocked in Waitrose, Selfridges, Harrods and many many more places.

Jenny studied maths at university before working for a hedge fund in the City for two years. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do with her degree, but knew she wanted to start something of her own and do something she was passionate about.

After coming across the fact that half of all the food we produce is never used and yet billions of people don’t have enough to eat, Rubies in the Rubble was born.

I first came across Jenny and her amazing business years ago now and genuinely just thought it was the best idea ever for a business and it’s been so inspiring to see her go from strength to strength. I just love speaking to these amazing entrepreneurs and hearing how they got to where they are – I find it so inspiring and I know you will enjoy hearing from Jenny – the condiment queen. That’s not her official title, but I’m going to go with it.

I mean, isn’t it a cool business? I love how the power of a word – from chutney to relish can change a business. You hear that kind of thing all the time – I mean I guess it’s the whole premise behind marketing but it’s kind of fun when you hear about it in action. I can vouch for the deliciousness of the spicy tomato chutney which is genuinely amazing – so so good in a sandwich, and with just about anything. It’s so fresh and well it’s just great.

I almost edited out her recommendation of Eat Tokyo which happens to be one of my favourites but I like you all so wouldn’t deprive you of an excellent recommendation like that!

Sophie comes from a long lineage of avid foodies and professional cooks. She decided at the ago of 15 to pursue a career in cooking and at the age of just 19 she was crowned “Young chef of the year”

Sophie has gone on to cook all over the world for a whole host of A list client including Claudia Schiffer and Leonardo Di Caprio, and both Princes William and Harry to name just a few.

Sophie became the UK’s youngest female Executive chef taking over from Mark Hix at Belgraves Hotel in London.

She has her own restaurants, and has also carved out a career as a successful TV presenter and food writer. She’s written 5 cook books, and She was part of Channel 4's smash hit show Cook Yourself Thin, and co-wrote the book of the same name that went on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies.

Margie’s castaway is Rebekah Hall.

She is the founder of Botanic Lab. Botanic Lab was one of the first juice companies in the UK and they make really delicious juices. Genuinely, really delicious.

Rebekah is very impressive and I really like the ethos of the brand; they aren’t selling a dream and they don’t pretend their juices will transform you into a Victoria Secret’s model. They just make delicious, finctional drinks, which are both creative and delicious. In the world we live in selling the dream of quick fix weight loss and meal replacements would be the easy option and I admire that they actively stayed away from that.

I found it so interesting that Rebekah is a food entrepreneur but is not really interested in cooking (by her own admission I might add). But she knows what she likes and with her friends and family keen to cook for her, it sounds like she has it pretty good.

And this is most definitely crumble weather which is just yet another thing to be happy about. Margie’s castaway is Dhruv Baker.

Dhruv not only took part in Masterchef back in 2010 but he went on to win the series and his career has gone from strength to strength since then.

He’s published a cookbook, presented TV programmes and regularly writes recipes for magazines. Dhruv went to work in some of the UK’s top kitchens, including Le Gavroche with Michel Roux Jr and The Connaught before starting his catering company The Earlsfield Kitchen, which covered everything from fine dining to BBQs before eventually getting their own premises at the Jolly Gardeners in Earlsfield.

To say that Dhruv is a great cook is an understatement. John Torode said Dhruv had a, "talent that very few people will ever have" whilst Greg Wallace added, "that Dhruv is probably one of the most amazing talents he’s ever seen. He has the palate of an angel."

I recorded this episode last week at Dhruv’s beautiful home, but by the magical powers of the internet I will be on a little holiday in New York by the time you listen to this or read this, which is very exciting. I’m expecting by the time I come back I will be 98% pancake and 2% maple syrup. The dream.

I am the biggest Masterchef geek which I think really comes out in today’s episode and I completely geeked out over the trophy. I wanted more than anything to pose with it, but having my photo taken is not one of my favourite things so I chickened out! I settled instead for taking lots of photos of it nestled on a velvet cushion, which I hasten to add is not where Dhruv normally keeps it.

Anyway, Dhruv was absolutely lovely and this episode made me really hungry…you have been warned. His love of food really comes across and he has some delicious dishes to talk about.

In this episode I said I’ve never tried Mole but I must have done, mustn’t I? Surely? I caused an uproar on my Instagram (@madebymargie) this week by admitting I had only just had my first cannoli. I feel I am slipping. It escapes me how something so calorie laden and delicious could have passed me by all this time. I am hoping my Mole revelation doesn’t have the same effect.

Winter BBQs need to happen. In fact, I feel foolish for wasting the last 30 years of my life by only having them in Summer. Mine is getting dusted off and I intend to cook brownies on it immediately, if not before. How this had never been brought to my attention before is beyond me, but the thought of cooking a batch of brownies on the BBQ and eating them hot off the coals with a cool scoop of ice cream just sounds heavenly.

Margie’s guest this week is Georgie Coleridge Cole. 

Georgie is the Founder and Editor of SheerLuxe, which she incredibly launched at the tender age of 25. Georgie studied French at university in Edinburgh and worked in beauty marketing before launching SheerLuxe. What started out as a directory for the best places to shop online has become a hugely popular digital magazine spanning fashion, beauty, health, food and careers for modern women. 

She lives in south-west London with her husband and three children.

Georgie has said: “Starting a business is not the easy option (especially as a mother) but I firmly believe you make your own luck and if you work hard enough good will prevail!”

Now, whilst Georgie is super successful she says herself that she is not a great cook: or at least that she is not that interested in cooking. And she’s very apologetic – when there is absolutely no need to apologise! As a chef, I am clearly as huge fan of people who hire chefs!

When I started Desert Island Dishes I was determined that my guests didn’t have to be from the world of food. Because we all eat – and what we eat and what food means to us is interesting, I think! We all have dishes that remind of our childhoods and we’ve all eaten dishes that we remember. So I love speaking to people who love cooking and who live to eat – but I also like speaking to people doing great things and find out about how they eat too. 

Georgie has her finger on the pulse of the zeigesit – and has lots of delicious food recommendations and some great business tips about how to get started along with some truly delicious desert island dishes. Her recommendation of Eight over Eight is a great one – it’s such a delicious restaurant, although I’ve never had the Pad Thai, so need to rectify that! Georgie also tells us that they do a great lychee martini which is also worth knowing. We also find out about the breakfast that gets Georgie springing out of bed in the morning, and as nut butter and banana are involved, I can completely understand why.

I had forgotten how much I love kedgeree – such a great dish. There’s a recipe on Made by Margie for a quinoa version which is really easy and delicious – although there is nothing wrong with the classic version either, of course.

There is a common theme here with these super successful people – they just get on and do stuff. The advice seems to be: Don’t spend too long over thinking and procrastinating – just get out there and start making waves.

This weeks castaway is Lily Simpson.

Lily is the founder of The Detox Kitchen – which is a series of delicious deli’s and food deliveries. I was going to say that it’s a favourite with A listers, but it’s a favourite of anyone lucky enough to have eaten there! The food is really creative, and delicious and just great.

Lily has written one best selling book – and another one is on the way next year which I know is going to be brilliant. Lily has basically built a food empire – and she’s done it on her own, off her own back and she’s just a bit of a superstar.

Simply put, Lily is an inspiration and she also happens to be one of the world’s loveliest people.

Now if Lily doesn’t inspire you to cracking on that thing you’ve always wanted to do – I don’t know what will! I’ve had a very productive week since seeing Lily – long may it continue! Lily kindly gave me lunch at the detox kitchen after our chat and it was so delicious – I can highly recommend. Just ask for one of everything.

I love the sound of her final meal of a smorgasbord of pasta – that is right up my street! I will most definitely be joining her for that. The creamy mushroom pasta sounds heavenly and just what this time of year calls for.

Lily recommends some brilliant restaurants: Nopi, Lima and Hoppers. All of which I can vouch for - they are great.

Tess is a Cordon Bleu trained chef, food writer and model

Tess has had a huge year career wise and it was exciting to hear all about some of the things she’s been up to including her biggest “pinch me” moment.

Tess travels a lot for work and regularly eats in exciting new restaurants so it was brilliant to hear all about her recommendations and what she’s loving. Her book, the Naked diet, came out in 2015 and she’s been beavering away on a new one which sounds fab and she tells us about what we can expect from that.

We made the mistake of recording this in the afternoon last Friday and I was so hungry by the end! Note to self, if I record in the afternoon – I must bring snacks.

I’m definitely going to try making the grilled chilli pineapple which sounds brilliant and I also like the sound of that granola very much!

Margie’s castaway this week is Rosie Lovell.

Rosie is a cooking superstar. She has set up not one but two fantastic delis. She’s a cookery author, a TV presenter and just generally cooks incredibly delicious things!

She opened her first café at the age of just 23 which is so impressive and she just been killing it ever since basically.

I love her Desert Island Dishes choices – and she lets us in on lots of her culinary secrets and some great places to eat. PLUS - we get an exclusive on how to make the perfect Portuguese custard tart – I’m winking at this point – only you cant see that because this is a podcast (if you’ve listened to this episode this joke will make sense.)

For all my joking – Rosie is a fantastic cook – her food is genuinely delicious – I have eaten in her delis many times and can highly recommend popping to Peckham for a visit.

I cant wait to experiment with Togarashi – sounds great and those sesame noodles sound fab, as does the pureed parsnips and that chicken dish. Generally just loads of delicious inspiration in this episode.

Margie’s castaway this week is Alex Petrides.

Alex is a seriously impressive guy – he was the first employee at Propercorn,the incredibly successful popcorn company and has now gone on to found a company with his brother, Johnathan. The company is called allplants. allplants is a plant based food delivery company which is growing quickly and going from strength to strength.

I really enjoyed chatting to Alex – he’s a really natural entrepreneur. He also definitely taught me something about what it is to be a vegan because Alex is so right – being vegan has been so tied up with clean eating that its all got a bit confusing in peoples heads – well definitely in my head, as you will hear when I ask him about making vegan caramel and kind of forget how to make caramel (shocker). But I definitely got a better understanding speaking to Alex because eing vegan doesn’t mean you also have to be gluten free or sugar free or that you are completely virtuous – you can be vegan and indulge in creature comforts

Also listening back to this one was weird for me as I seem to do a dirty old man laugh at one point when we talk about butter….so I’m sorry about that.

How great does that birthday party he threw sound with the piadinas? They sound so good – can’t believe I haven’t heard of them before – slightly embarrassing. Also the aubergine volcano sounds intriguing and as does his avocado and marmite sandwich? It sounds so weird that it could just work – and if Alex says it does then I’m going to trust him!

I went round to her gorgeous flat on a rainy Monday morning and we just had a really lovely chinwag. Dolly is friendly, funny and super successful but also charmingly self-deprecating. We discuss a mutual love of all things Nigella, butter, bread and the joy of having a side of carbs when you’re already having carbs.

Dolly has a complicated relationship with shortbread, which we explore as well as the idea of using food to make friends.

Milli runs a hugely successful catering company called Milli’s Catering and she just makes the most dribble inducing food – that is to say it’s delicious and she’s ridiculously talented. From large weddings and cocktail parties to hosting small supperclubs in her home, she’s happiest when bringing people together through good food. Milli has cooked for numerous celebrities, from politicians to pop-stars, and has created show stopping cakes that have appeared in Hello and Grazia magazines.

Simply put - Milli knows good food, and her approach to food and cooking is full of passion and flavour. I know Milli could put anything she cooked down infront of me and it would just be delicious.

Milli gave me two slices of the most insanely perfect almond and greengage tart. I think she thought I would give the second slice to my boyfriend…I didn’t.

Frances is the winner of the Great British Bake Off Series 4.

Now, like most people in the UK and probably the world – I am fairly obsessed with the Great British Bake Off, so to meet a winner was a dream come true.

Frances is ridicously talented. She sees food in a way that most just don’t and yet it just comes so naturally to her. She makes the most incredible cakes that all look almost too good to eat. Almost.

So it was generally just lovely to meet Fran and have a chat about all things bake off – I wanted all the goss, as well as all the amazing things shes been up to since the show. I can't stop thinking about her bourbon brownies and she’s also inspired me to cook up some flapjacks this weekend for sure. I might even, if I’m feeling brave give those edible white chocolate candles a go!

Margie’s castaway this week is Georgia Cummings.

Georgia is the founder of Potage – the healthy home cooked food delivery service. Their goal is to make eating well easy and there’s an emphasis on fresh, quality ingredients.

I went to the bustling kitchens of Potage to meet Georgia and she was so lovely. She is a great example of someone who has built something from the ground up with minimal funds but buckets of passion and hard work and now 5 years later she is running her own little empire and its very inspiring and impressive to see.

So I looked it up and a loaded potato is very much a thing – so I definitely didn’t coin that phrase like I thought I did. More’s the pity. How great is Georgia? She’s so passionate about food and I am so impressed with how hard she worked during all university holidays and she set about getting as much experience as possible which just shows she was destined for big things. That Pret baguette holds a special place in my heart so that gets a big thumbs up from me plus I love that her dads cooked breakfast got a mention.

Margie's castaway this week is Giovanna Ryan.

Giovanna was runner up on this years Masterchef. I am a HUGE fan of masterchef, I absolutely love it – so it was great to meet Giovanna and get some of the inside goss on behind the scenes on Masterchef. Since Masterchef Giovanna has set up a supper club and events company called Three Girls Cook with two other fellow contestants which is very cool. And it was generally just lovely to chat to her and hear all about her food filled adventurwes and her desert island dishes.

I went on holiday to Spain last week to see my dad which was amazing but I came back with a cold which is very annoying. So apologies if I sound a bit bunged up, I promise I will have bounced back by next week!

I don’t know about you but I am definitely going to try out a parmesan stock very soon and I cant stop thinking about that honey and Greek yogurt pannacotta with apricots – sounds so so good! Also – I cannot stop thinking about Christmas sandwiches – and that episode from Friends – one of my favourites where Ross loses it when someone steals his standwich.

Bella Younger is the internet sensation: the woman behind the genius instagram account – Deliciously Stella. Deliciously Stella is a parody of those clean eating and wellness instagram accounts. It's become such a big thing she even got a book deal out of it,Davina Mcall was one of her earliest fans which is not too shabby and she’s gone on to have a podcast, an Edinburgh fringe show and she has a BBC three series.

I love that Bella tried to sneak the smoked ham and cheese sandwich into every answer but I had to put my school mistress hat on and say no – we need more food choices from you and more we got. I also loved how modest her one luxury item would be – a simple towel. I'm not sure what mine would be? Hmm something to ponder over

Zanna is a blogger, personal trainer and fitness model with over 170,000 followers on Instagram. At the age of 24 she has accomplished more than most of her age - she has walked in London Fashion week, has her own range of active wear and a fitness events company. She released her first book last year and has graced the cover of numerous magazines as well as being appointed the first ever UK ambassador for Adidas.

I ask Zanna about the secrets to her success, we talk about the reponsibilities that come with having such a huge following and the idea of an "overnight success". As someone in the fitness industry I was really interested to talk to Zanna about her love of food, what she loves to eat and how she came to choose the recipes for her book.

Zanna's choice of final meal before heading off to the desert island completely took me by surprise and you will hear me silent with laughter - if such a thing is possible. There are some goodies in here and I hope you enjoy!

Laura definitely sounds like she knows how to host an excellent lunch party and she's so fun – you know you would have the best time. The last dish Laura would choose before being cast off to the desert island was very romantic...contrary to how I reacted on hearing it!

Margie's castaway this week is Struan Robertson.

Struan is the Head butcher and co owner of The Provenance Meat Company .

Struan gave up his job in advertising to train as a butcher and then, after honing his butchery skills he went on to co found the award winning butcher, Provenance. They have just opened their 3rd store in London – which in less than 4 years is quite remarkable.

I’ve known Struan for a long time now and he is one of the nicest , and hardest working people I know – so it was actually a real treat to get to sit down with him and ask him the sorts of questions we probably don’t ask our friends enough!

I love the idea of beign an eater not a foodie and I think I definitely fall into that category too. I also love his tip about not being afraid to ask your butcher for advice and tips.

Kerstin launched the UK’s first underground restaurant back in 2009 when 12 complete strangers paid her to cook for them in her living room. Her underground restaurant became a weekly occasion and since then hundreds of restaurants have followed Kerstins lead – as supperclubs have sprung up all over London and all over the world

As the creator of the multi award winning food blog Ms marmite lover – Kerstin has also written for the Guardian and the independent and is the author of 4 books.

Kerstin set out to do something bigger than just herself - she wanted to start a movement. I wanted to find out about her journey, and what she's up to now . Kerstin is honest, funny and open and lovely to chat to.

Kerstin's desert island dishes are home cooking at it's best and will hopefully give you some inspiration next time you're in the kitchen!
