Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime dives deep into cases involving a more rare type of criminal, women who commit financial crimes. Scamming and financial crimes are usually a man’s game, but women dabble in it too. In Season Three of Dirty Money Moves, host, Jami Rice of MURDERISH, the podcast, takes listeners along as she investigates Tracii Hutsona, a self-described “winner” who appeared to have it all: successful businesses, multimillion dollar mansions, luxury cars, and the cash to spend on high-end jewelry and vacations. She claimed to have had a lengthy acting and modeling career, one that saw her on the cover of several major magazines, including Italian Vogue. She even claimed to have romantic ties to Keanu Reeves. But not much about Tracii seems to be real, except maybe her abilities as a con artist. Most recently, she made headlines for embezzling more than $1 million from Joumana Kidd, actress and ex wife of NBA star Jason Kidd, via Tracii’s luxury concierge business. Then, Tracii opened a restaurant in San Diego, fittingly called “Breakfast Bitch,” which was funded, in part, by Joumana’s money. These recent crimes may have garnered all the media attention, but they are by no means Tracii’s first run-ins with the law. She’s had a long history of schemes, going back 30 years. Yet, the most shocking thing about Tracii isn’t the dollar amount she’s managed to steal over the years, but the way in which she victimizes the people closest to her, over and over again. This is the story of an extremely charismatic woman who can manipulate even the most savvy person into believing exactly what she needs them to, all in the pursuit of a lifestyle of luxury, glamour, and self-indulgence.

On February 21, 2021, a grizzly discovery was made on Bournda Beach on the southern coast of New South Wales, Australia. A designer athletic shoe washed up on the beach. Inside of it, was a decomposing foot. After taking DNA samples from family members of missing persons in the area, the shoe and samples matched with a woman named Melissa Caddick, a 49-year-year old who’d been missing for three months following the raid of her home by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. Initially, Caddick was being investigated for her part as the ringleader of an insider trading investigation, but authorities soon discovered her white collar schemes went much deeper. It appeared that Melissa had died by suicide, perhaps distraught over facing years in prison. Then, questions began to arise and suspicion fell on Melissa’s husband, Anthony Koletti. Why’d he wait almost two days to report his wife missing?

Fred Downie, the elderly man who’d moved to Southern California to live out the rest of his years under the care of Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt, had died under mysterious circumstances. Even so, his death was ruled an accident and there was nothing to stop a man from giving his fortune away. Although Fred’s case was off the table, in March 2008, the Black Widows were going on trial for the murders of Paul Vados and Kenneth McDavid.
Prosecutors felt fairly confident in their case. After all, they’d linked Helen and Olga to the crimes in more than one way. Though, their case was largely built on circumstantial evidence. Confident or not, the state likely didn’t see the defense's strategy coming. Helen’s attorney was about to tell the jury who REALLY killed Kenneth McDavid, and it wasn’t going to be Helen or Olga. Let’s just say it was Helen-adjacent.

Following their 2006 arrest for mail and wire fraud, the LAPD and the FBI continued trying to build a murder case against Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt. They’d found some evidence during raids on the women’s homes, but everything collected up until that point still wasn’t enough to build a murder case. The FBI continued trying to find anything to tie Helen and Olga to Paul Vados’s and Kenneth McDavid’s death.
Soon, investigators pieced things together and found themselves in a position to charge the women with murder. It all came down to rubber stamps, a Post-it note, and evidence found on the undercarriage of the Mercury Sable seen in the surveillance footage on the day Kenneth McDavid was killed. The Black Widows were headed for trial, and spectators were in for a wild ride.

In 2006, over a year after unhoused man Kenneth McDavid was found run down in a back alley in Westwood, California, insurance investigator Ed Webster had unearthed some interesting information. Ed brought his investigation findings to the LAPD, who began surveilling Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt. Soon, the FBI was brought in. They summoned the women's bank records and raided their homes, which resulted in a mountain of evidence that helped authorities begin to unravel the true nature of Helen and Olga’s deadly business dealings.

In 2002, Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt were riding high following their first successful life insurance scam. Before the women set their sights on their next victim, Kenneth McDavid, there was another scheme brewing. This one, developing across the country, and involving an elderly man named Fred Downie. At 96-years-old, this widowed New Englander owned a house on Cape Cod, and somehow befriended a young woman named Kecia Golay, Helen Golay’s youngest daughter.
Kecia soon convinced Fred to move to Southern California, where her mother owned several properties. Fred Downie agreed and would indeed find his place in the sun, though only for a short time. He’d write his niece Mildred letters about the glory of west coast living. As the months rolled by, however, the letters got more despondent. And then, the letters stopped. Soon, Mildred would learn that Fred was dead.
Unfortunately for Helen and Olga, their claim on an insurance policy for Kenneth McDavid landed on the desk of Ed Webster, a detail-oriented insurance investigator who previously worked as a private eye. And Ed had questions. Soon, the LAPD got involved. Through Kenneth McDavid’s case, they learned about Fred Downie’s case which only raised more questions. Why was 97-year-old Fred Downie in the middle of the road, unattended, when he was struck by a car? And why was he carrying funeral instructions on him when he died?

On June 21, 2005, a 50-year-old unhoused man named Kenneth McDavid was left for dead in a back alley just off of Westwood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Police believed that he’d been the victim of a hit-and-run. After a distant female cousin came forth claiming to be Kenneth’s only living relative, the case was closed and the cause of death was listed as “unknown.”
When a New York insurance claims department employee took note of Kenneth’s case, he became aware of two fairly substantial life insurance policies that had been taken out on the man. The beneficiaries of Kenneth’s life insurance policies were two 70-something women named Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmid, a duo who were known around town as fairly regular volunteers at the Hollywood Presbyterian Church. As law enforcement continued investigating Kenneth’s case they learned his death was just the tip of the iceberg. Eventually, a much deeper and shocking mystery would be unravaled. And the two sweet, 70-something seniors who’d been helping vulnerable people at the church …they were just devils in disguise.

A few months after Samantha Azzopardi was sentenced to three years of Community Corrections Order following her latest fake identity scam, where she claimed to be a pregnant 15-year-old victim of sexual abuse, she answered an advertisement placed by a lawyer in Sydney named Theresa Power. Theresa needed a nanny for her young daughter and “Maya Malicka” answered the call. Maya claimed to be 19, Polish, and have tons of experience with kids. Theresa became convinced Maya was legitimate, and hired her as a nanny. The gig with Theresa Power wouldn’t last long, but Samantha had one more alias she wanted to attempt before settling in again as a nanny for a family.

Samantha Azzopardi’s latest alias, a 13-year-old named Harper Hart, had convinced a foster family to take her in while living in Sydney. But, “Harper’s” stories of being in the witness protection program alerted officials, who then sought to confirm her identity. For weeks, they found nothing and Harper remained silent. Then, a colleague at the police station casually brought up the case of the GPO Girl in Dublin, and how Samantha Azzopardi’s and Harper Hart’s stories sounded similar.
They compared Harper and Samantha’s photographs and saw a small resemblance, but Harper looked 13, and the chance that Samantha, who was 28 at the time, could pass for 13 seemed very unlikely. Then, they retrieved some of Harper's homework from school and found Samantha’s fingerprints all over the papers. Samantha was exposed yet again, but this wouldn’t stop her from ramping up the devious nature of her crimes. This time, she’d involved children in a way that she never had before.

Samantha Azzopardi had been living under the alias “Emily,” a 14-year-old gymnast from Russia, when she convinced her friend Hope’s family to adopt her. In this instance, however, her story got much darker than anything else Samantha had ever presented.
According to Hope, Emily claimed that she was severely traumatized by a murder-suicide in her family. Hope’s family believed her, and took her in for an undisclosed amount of time. But, when Hope’s family tried to enroll Emily in high school, school authorities raised questions about her birth certificate. Samantha would eventually move on to a whole new identity, and brainwash an innocent young backpacker who continues to be traumatized by the experience today.

When a young girl was found distraught and non-communicative in the streets of Dublin in 2013, it kicked off one of Ireland’s biggest mysteries. After the Dublin police had exhausted all of their options, they got permission to release a photo of the girl to the media in hopes of finding out her true identity. When Garda eventually did, they discovered she wasn’t a 14-year-old as initially expected. She was 25-year-old Australian con woman, Samantha Azzopardi.
As Samantha’s story went global, others began to contact Dublin authorities with tales of how she’d deceived them as well. Irish authorities grappled with how to process Samantha. Technically, she hadn’t committed any crime, or filed any false claims …but she’d wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars in Government money and countless hours of time.

In October 2013, two police officers in Dublin, Ireland came across a disheveled, emaciated and distressed teenage girl wandering around by herself outside the General Post Office. She was unable to speak, using only primitive sign language to show her age. From what the officers could translate, the girl indicated that she was 14-years-old.
Child welfare authorities took her to a nearby children’s hospital while trying to figure out who she was. As The Garda looked into uncovering the young girl’s identity, local media began speculating about possible sex trafficking as the country-wide interest in her case grew.
Who was this young girl? Where was her family? What was her name? When Irish authorities uncovered the truth, it turned out the young girl was not a young girl after all. She was a 25-year-old Australian con woman named Samantha Azzopardi, and this incident was not the first (or the last) time she’d convinced people to shower her with care and attention by assuming a false identity. In fact, Samantha had been doing this for most of her adult life. As interest in this case grew, so did the stories of the dozens of people she’d de-frauded across three continents. To this day, Samantha’s motive for doing all of this isn’t exactly clear.

“Grey’s Anatomy” star writer and producer Elisabeth Finch was just confronted by her new wife, Jennifer Beyer, about her supposed cancer claims. A former registered nurse, Jennifer noticed that Elisabeth didn’t seem to have a port scar for chemotherapy treatments. She’d seen photos of Elisabeth during chemotherapy with a bald head, but also with full eyebrows and eyelashes …something she’d never witnessed during her nursing career. Jennifer had also taken Elisabeth to a doctor who claimed she had two perfectly working kidneys. “Grey’s Anatomy” star writer and producer Elisabeth Finch was apparently going through a lot in the middle of 2019. She remained on top at Grey’s, becoming the de facto writer for any episode dealing with cancer as a subject matter, but she just couldn’t seem to catch a break in her personal life. She claimed she’d lost a kidney to cancer and said she’d been forced to abort a fetus in the early stages of pregnancy due to complications with her chemotherapy. Her latest traumatic experience was dealing with the awful Tree of Life Synagogue massacre in Pittsburgh, the city where she once attended college. According to Elisabeth, she was there one day after the attack helping clean up the dead remains of her close friend.
But now, as the new season of “Grey’s Anatomy’s” was in early preparation, Elisabeth decided that the PTSD from the synagogue incident was too much for her to handle. She asked for a leave of absence to go into a trauma treatment center in Arizona, where she checked in under the name “Jo,” which was also the name of a character that Elisabeth Finch had been researching for a storyline on “Grey’s Anatomy.” She settled into her first few days of therapy, and that’s when she met a woman in her process group named Jennifer Beyer, the woman she fell in love with who will ultimately be responsible for Elisabeth’s catastrophic downfall.

Hollywood writer and TV producer Elisabeth Finch seemed to have it all. After breaking through as a staff writer on the shows “True Blood” and “The Vampire Diaries” at a fairly young age, she was hired at her favorite TV show “Grey's Anatomy.” She got the gig after Shonda Rhimes was handed an article that Elisabeth had written for Elle Magazine about her devastating battle with a rare form of bone cancer known as Chondrosarcoma. In this episode Jami interviews Loriann Hart, a former close friend of Tracii Hutsona’s for many years. When it seemed Tracii and her family might be without housing, Loriann allowed them to live in her palatial guest house for free. According to Loriann, Tracii repaid the generous favor by inviting questionable guests over to the home and attempting to seduce Loriann’s then husband. In February 2023, Tracii Hutsona was sentenced to 51 months in Federal Prison for her crimes against Joumana Kidd, and given until April 13th to voluntarily turn herself in to the US Marshals. She ended up turning herself in on March 20th, about a month early, to the prison camp at FCI Phoenix. At first glance, it might seem that Tracii was eager to take responsibility for her actions and start serving her well deserved sentence.
In this week’s episode, we’ll wrap up this story by bringing you up to speed on where things stand today. I’ll walk you through the REAL reasons Tracii turned herself in early. We’ll take a look at Tracii’s first-hand account of life in federal prison through her blog, and we’ll cover the different motions she filed in the hopes of reducing her time. On July 17, 2019, The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon aired on NBC. Four minutes into Jimmy’s opening monologue, he made reference to a real-life lawsuit that seemed too ridiculous to be true: the owners of a Miami restaurant, called Bacon Bitch, were suing the owners of a San Diego restaurant called Breakfast Bitch. He joked that it would be the first case ever where the judge would say “how do you bitches plead?” The live audience erupted in laughter at the sheer absurdity of it. But, in reality, the situation wasn’t funny at all. The owner of Bacon Bitch, Chris Viso, was suing Tracii Hutsona for trademark infringement. While the whole situation might have seemed insignificant to most, it was yet another example of Tracii taking something that didn’t belong to her. The restaurants were getting national attention thanks to Jimmy Fallon, but no one knew the extent of the violations, the decades of fraud and thievery Tracii had under her belt. Not to mention the fact she was actively stealing over a million dollars from Joumana Kidd, some of which was even used to open Breakfast Bitch. It would still be another year and a half before Tracii was arrested for any of that. By that time, she will have already opened a second restaurant, been sued at least twice, and moved from one multi million dollar home to the next. Infuriatingly, even after she was arrested, Tracii continued to live a consequence-free lifestyle for years, flaunting herself and her business all over social media as if nothing had happened.
In this week’s episode we’ll talk about how Breakfast Bitch came to be, and we’ll weave through all the ridiculous things Tracii did after she was arrested, right up to her sentencing. Would she ever be able to accept responsibility for her actions? Or, in the ultimate act of manipulation, would she attempt to avoid accountability by shifting the blame onto Joumana Kidd? In January 2007 NBA star point guard for the New Jersey Nets, Jason Kidd, filed for divorce from his wife: actress and journalist Joumana Kidd. What followed was an extremely messy, and very public end to their 10 year marriage. Fast forward 8 years to 2015, Joumana decided it was a good time to move back to her home state of California. As she was preparing to go to Los Angeles to do some house hunting, she got a phone call from her doctor that would completely change her life in more ways than one. It’s September 2008 and Tracii Hutsona has been out on bond for the last 10 months. By this time, the original indictment has been superseded twice, adding numerous charges for the schemes she pulled at several staffing agencies. Tracii has also been evicted from her $1.5 million Orange County, CA home for failing to pay over $30,000 in rent, but Jacqueline Ellman didn’t know any of this. If she had, she probably would’ve never become close friends with Tracii. Now, Jacqueline was holding the bill for a credit card in her name that she’d never seen before, and she had a sneaking suspicion Tracii had something to do with it. She sent Tracii a text message asking her about it. Tracii called back and tearfully admitted to the fraud, telling Jacqueline that she had a problem, but she was trying to be better. In reality, Tracii had opened not one, but TWO cards in Jacqueline's name, and used her existing cards without permission. She also attempted to rent an apartment in her so-called friend’s name. Unbelievably, Jacqueline wasn’t even the only “friend” that Tracii was taking advantage of during this time.
In this week’s episode we’ll explore how, even though Tracii touted herself as an advocate for women and social justice, it was women whom she chose to victimize, women who were close friends, whom she exploited at seemingly every turn. We’ll also follow Tracii through another round of federal charges, sentencing, and prison time. Will she emerge a changed and rehabilitated woman? Or, will she continue her pattern of manipulating anyone who dared offer her a little bit of grace?

Tracii Hutsona is so persuasive that she was able to convince a car dealership that she needed an expensive, fancy car for Arnold Schwarzenegger to drive. As a testament to her level of con artistry, she got the car! Tracii, however, maintains that this story isn’t true, that stories about her criminal history are merely exaggerations to make her look bad. She’s also highly offended at being labeled a con artist, even though the judge who sentenced her in 2023 called her a serial con artist. It’s early February, 2021 in Phoenix Arizona. Federal agents have been on the hunt for Tracii Hutsona, a woman wanted on charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for stealing more than $1 million from her cancer-stricken, single mother of three employer. Tracii’s motive: she needed funding for her lavish lifestyle. Agents find Tracci at her restaurant “Breakfast Bitch.” She tried to run but the chase was short-lived. News cameras captured the aftermath of the arrest with Tracii locked in handcuffs as she stood outside of her company car. Tracii’s arrest shocked many of her friends and employees, who had no idea Tracii had spent much of the previous 30 years in and out of prison or on probation or parole for stealing and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to support a lavish lifestyle she’d been chasing her entire life. She’d racked up a slew of scams and schemes, leaving a trail of victims in her wake. Tracii has a magnetic personality and is easy to like, but hidden underneath her million dollar smile lies a remarkable ability to persuade those around her to believe anything she needs them to. Her own family, her friends, and her victims have all described Tracii as a pathological liar; a lifelong con artist who is exceptionally good at what she does. So what happened in the course of Tracii’s life to lead her to this one very public moment, handcuffed on the Phoenix evening news for all to see? Tara Lee had the opportunity to quietly do her prison time and follow through on the court’s orders, but she just couldn’t do it. Tara Lee’s sentence hearing was attended by dozens of her victims, many of whom traveled great distances to see her be punished. They sobbed while giving statements to the court about how Tara hurt them. Some people even addressed Tara directly.
It wasn’t only adoptive families speaking, birth mothers and fathers, people who had their children taken from them without their consent all made their voices heard. Victim statements were given for over six hours, each person demanding justice for their broken families. Tara even spoke to the court, but would the judge be swayed by Tara’s emotional apology?

Tara Lee told horrible lies about birth mothers being murdered, babies dying during childbirth, or mothers deciding to keep their babies when, in reality ..there wasn’t a mother or baby at all. Thanks to the efforts of several adoptive parents and the lawyers who worked with Tara, the FBI was notified and given a ton of information to go on as they began investigating her. The FBI also identified a woman who helped Tara pull off some of her schemes and as it turned out, this wasn’t her first rodeo either.

Tara Lee and her husband Jeremy were in financial ruin. They had lost another home to foreclosure, and Tara’s wages were still being heavily garnished. There was another bankruptcy, the purchase of another, larger home, a new car, and they adopted two babies between 2012 and 2014.
During all of her financial woes, Tara established Always Hope and it appeared to be a successful, legit adoption agency… until a phone call from a woman in late 2018 changed everything.

Last week’s episode covered Tara Lee’s extensive history of fraud and the numerous civil judgments that had been levied against her, which dramatically affected her finances for years to come. And by the time 2014 rolled around, there were a few more financial setbacks. Even so, it seemed like Tara made some positive steps toward changing her life: she’d gone to school, gotten a degree, and was trying to take control of her finances by working multiple jobs, one of which was in the legal field. But, like she wrote in her blog in 2017, the Lord had other plans for her. Those plans would absolutely change Tara’s life, and destroy countless others in the process.

In this episode, Jami speaks with Kevin Barry who formerly worked for Bellum Entertainment. Like other former Bellum workers, Kevin began to notice red flags at the company and then he witnessed the “House of Cards” fall. Kevin provided great insight on what it was like to work for a TV production company that was being operated by Mary Carole McDonnell who constantly lied, failed to pay workers, and ultimately caused the demise of Bellum Entertainment. During our conversation, Kevin explains why Mary Carole made his “skin crawl” and also a very cringeworthy moment he endured upon first meeting Dr. Jeffrey Nilles, Mary Carole’s husband.

In the last episode, we went over all of the loans, merchant agreements, and investments that Mary Carole McDonnell was able to get her hands on, beginning in 2007 and stretching through 2018. So what recourse has there been for all the people and institutions Mary Carole has scammed into loaning her money or investing in her fake family trust? 2017 marked the first year of lawsuits against her. That year at least twenty civil lawsuits were filed against Mary Carole and Bellum Entertainment, ranging from employees seeking unpaid wages, to banks trying to recoup their millions. Every year since, more and more lawsuits have been filed...over fifty in total. But while the lawsuits are rolling in, Mary Carole has never appeared in court for any of them.

Last episode was all about how Mary Carole McDonnell and her attorney Barry Rothman allegedly worked together to scam Banc of California out of nearly $15 million dollars. And, we found out that it apparently was not their first time pulling this hustle together. To top it all off, Barry unexpectedly died on the evening of March 9th after a dental procedure earlier that day. Many of us at the bank thought there was a chance that Mary Carole may have had something to do with Barry’s death because he knew too much about the alleged scam. His death, while extremely suspicious at first thought, turned out not to be nefarious. In this episode we dive deeper into how and when Mary Carole got her hands on millions of dollars from loans, friends, and colleagues. The amount of money the “heiress” was able to secure through deception is absolutely staggering.

In the previous episode of Dirty Money Moves, we learned about Barry Rothman, Mary Carole’s infamous entertainment lawyer and longtime associate. We also learned that he and Mary Carole had something in common…unbelievable financial troubles. Barry also operated a complex network of foreign bank accounts and Panamanian shell companies, which he allegedly used to hide certain assets. This was the person Mary Carole aligned herself with in 2017 as Bellum Entertainment fell apart. She found herself in desperate need of a ton of money to fend off creditors, and Barry was the man she turned to for help. Shockingly, Mary Carole was so brazen, that she baked homemade pies for bank employees and hand delivered them, just before she pulled off the biggest money grab of her crooked career. That, and Barry would be dead before the bank even realized they’d been scammed.

In the last episode of Dirty Money Moves, we explained how Mary Carole’s antics were exposed by Channel 2 News. We also described how Mary Carole managed to get her hands on a few million dollars through a “gifting” program connected to her family trust that she claimed was worth millions. By 2017, Mary Carole’s flagship company, Bellum Entertainment, was crumbling. She owed individuals and institutions millions of dollars. But, in the face of mounting lawsuits and creditors breathing down her neck, Mary Carole didn’t seem to flinch. Instead, she got together with her lawyer friend, Barry Rothman, who had a colorful past and ties to one of Hollywood’s most infamous scandals involving pop icon Michael Jackson. The two of them worked out a plan to get even more cash and this time around, Mary Carole was going BIG. Through lies and false documents, Mary Carole shockingly got her hands on almost $15 million from Banc of California. And by the time Mary Carole likely began enjoying the fruit of her multi million dollar swindle, Barry would drop dead before the FBI could even question him about the bank scam.
