We discuss movies from all eras prior to a decade ago and determine if they still hold up or not. We look at the directing, cinematography, acting, writing, and everything else before making our final decision. Some movies we are watching for the very first time and others we have seen more time than we can count. Join us on our journey to see what does and what doesn’t hold up.

May 13, 2011. A movie that feels like the start of something very different in Hollywood hits theaters everywhere. A raunchy comedy led entirely by females that doesn't shy away from getting gross or uncomfortable. And the best part, the entire movie doesn't revolve around a man or trying to get a man. It's about women and problems they deal with. Kristen Wiig of SNL fame leads the cast and wrote the screenplay. She's joined by Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy. Directed by Paul Feig. It broke box office records and created a new movie genre, but DOES IT HOLD UP?

October 20th, 2006. Christopher Nolan bring us The Prestige. A movie full of magic, and wonder. Heartache and pain. Obsession and truth. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale head up an all-star cast that includes Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, and Michael Caine.
Two magicians battle for years to see who has the best trick until it all goes too far and costs both of them everything they have. Riding high after 2005's Batman Begins, Nolan makes us question everything we see. But the only question we are interested in here is, Does it Hold Up?

May 18th 2001, Dreamworks releases one of their biggest movies ever, Shrek. Mike Myers plays the fearsome ogre who wants to be alone. Eddie Murphy lights up the screen as the voice of Donkey. And Cameron Diaz holds her own as Fiona. A fairytale to end all fairytales... or at least rip them all off.
An Oscar winner. A top grosser. And a movie that saved an entire company. Shrek is a beloved classic, but when's the last time you watched it? Is it still as good as you remember? Does it hold up?

July 2nd 1996, Will Smith, Jeff GoldBlum, and Bill Pullman lead the US and the world into a battle for freedom. They will not go quietly into the night. They will take down these aliens and the whole world will say in one voice, this is our Independence Day.
Director Roland Emmerich gives us what many consider one of the best alien movies of all with an all-star cast, crazy visuals, and a 2.5 hour runtime. This is a staple in some US households to watch every July 4th, but does it hold up?

May 24th 1989, Harrison Ford takes on the role of Indiana Jones for what everyone though would be the last time. Spielberg was back in the director's chair for the third installment in this adventure series. Sean Connery is new to the cast as Jones' father. We follow Indy as he goes after the Holy Grail. A lot of the movie feels very similar to Raiders of the Lost Ark, but is miles ahead of Temple of Doom. Some consider this movie their favorite Indiana Jones adventure while others think it's the same thing we have already seen. But what we wanna know is, does it hold up?

May 21st, 1996. Tom Cruise continues to cement his status as one of the top draws in film as he stars in the movie adaptation of a beloved tv show. Mission Impossible is an espionage movie but with Cruise in the cast it's taken to another level. Disguises, action, and one of the best movie moments in the history of the industry sets Mission Impossible apart from others. Here we are 27 years late and the 7th entry into this franchise is headed to theaters soon, so this one must have done something right. A stellar cast, great casting, and a 90's feel that you can't escape. All those things made the movie work when it came out, but we want to know, Does it Hold Up?

July 16th 2010. Dreams will never be the same after watching Christopher Nolan's latest film Inception. How can I know that what I'm dreaming is real? Am I awake right now? The whole world was asking these questions after watching Inception for the very first time. Leonardo DiCaprio wowed audiences with his portrayal of Cobb, a man obsessed with getting back to his kids by planting an idea into a man's dreams. With a stacked cast, a fantastic script, the BWONG noise, and some amazing special effects, the world of film would never be the same again. Was it all a dream, and does it hold up?

March 21st, 1997 the world is reintroduced to the Latin superstar Selena. Only this time it's not the real Selena but Jennifer Lopez starring as her in the biopic about the young singer's life. Just two years after Selena's tragic murder by Yolanda Saldivar, the movie let's audiences into the life and times of the Grammy winner from when she was a just girl first learning to sing and learning to speak Spanish, all the way to her untimely death.
This movie stars Jennifer Lopez, Edward James Olmos, Jon Seda, Constance Marie, Jackie Guerra, Jacob Vargas, and more. With this movie releasing almost 2 years to the day after the murder took place, does it do justice to the story or does it feel rushed? Does it give you the full story or does it hide some of the truth? There's many questions that can be asked, but the only one we can answer is, Does It Hold Up?

The rules were simple. Pick one song from a movie for each of these 5 categories:
Ballad

And if someone stole your pick before you had you turn than you have to pick another one. This episode was a blast to make and we hope you enjoy. Let us know in the comments what your picks for each category are. And make sure to click the links below to check out our socials for more content and Matty and Sam's podcasts as well. October 10th, 2014 Damien Chazelle brings to audiences everywhere his first directorial debut. All about Jazz drumming enthusiast Andrew, played by Miles Teller, going toe to toe with overbearing and controversial teacher Fletcher, played by J.K. Simmons. This is a story about how drive and passion can become overwhelming and may not always be the right way to go about things. It also asks a very complicated question of teaching methods and when does it cross the line and become too much.
Some brilliant performances drive the at times unfocused narrative. The directing is amazing and the jazz infused score is hypnotizing. There is so much to like about this film, but there's just as much to dislike. So the question as always is...Does it hold up?

July 2nd 1980, one of the most iconic, satirical, spoofy, parody movies ever made hits the big screen. Airplane! is a movie ("What's that?" "It's a serious of moving images, but that's not important right now.") that everyone knows the lines from, has seen clips from, and remembers fondly. Surely, Leslie Nielsen has his most famous role in this movie. Yes he does, and don't call me Shirley. There are jokes flying a mile a minute in this wacky comedy based entirely on the 1957 film Zero Hour, but there's no way these jokes still work in 2023. That's what we are here to find out, does Airplane! hold up?

This is a long episode because we welcome a special guest, our close friend Matty from the No Nerds Were Harmed podcast. One of the biggest Batman fans I know so we needed his opinion on one of the most divisive Batman movies of all time.
June 16, 1995 Val Kilmer dons the Batsuit for the first and only time in his career. His Batman takes on Robin as his partner, falls for Chase Meridian, outsmarts Two Face, and matches wits with The Riddler. Chris O'Donnell, Nicole Kidman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Jim Carrey respectively. Joel Schumacher takes over as director, after Tim Burton leaves the project, and gives us a brand new Gotham and a brand new Caped Crusader. This was the top grossing movie for 1995, but has been dragged through the dirt in the years since.
Does this movie deserve the vitriol and hatred it receives? Does it deserve the love that others pour upon it? We aren't here to decide if it deserves love or hate, but we are here to answer the question; Does It Hold Up?
If you liked what Matty had to say, click the following links to check out his two podcasts. We are a big fan of both and hopefully you will be too.

November 26, 1942 Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman wow us at the theater as Rick and Ilsa. Casablanca is the last stop for many seeking freedom and for most they pace through Rick's. The fine establishment where some underhanded things happen. Victor Laszlo is one of the most recent people to come to Rick's and with that comes a world of problems. We had the privilege of seeing this in theaters on the big screen. This Oscar winning film has long been considered one of the greatest pieces of cinema in history. But does it hold up?

July 1st, 1992 women take over the game of baseball on the big screen. The Rockford Peaches are one of 4 teams in the newly made All American Girls Baseball league. A real league that existed for 9 seasons from 1943 to 1954. Geena Davis stars as Dottie Henson, Tom Hanks as Jimmy Duggan, and Lori Petty as Kit Keller. These characters all feel so real and when the side characters are played by Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna, you know you're in for something special. This is one of the sports movies it feels like every single person has seen at least once.
The first year of the AAGBL is historic and although the story in this is movie is fabricated, it doesn't take away from what a moment in history this was. All this story does it give us a wonderful work of non-fiction over some real world events. Is this the best sports movie of all time? Is it your favorite sports movie of all time? October 9th, 1987 audiences everywhere were treated to the greatest love story ever told. Acca believe we are going back to 2012 to get our groove on. Becca (Anna Kendrick) is leading a group of misfit girls as they vie to become champions of collegiate acapella singing. She's joined by Chole, Aubrey, Fat Amy, and more. The only problem is, they aren't a team and going up against the defending champs, the Treblemakers, is not going to be easy. An infectious soundtrack will have you tapping your toes along to each and every beat. Hello movie lovers! We are here with a wrap up of all (most) of the moves released in 2022 that we had the pleasure/displeasure of watching. Give us a listen and we try to glimpse into the future to decide if the movies we saw this year will get a Holds Up or Doesn't Hold Up in 10 years time.
We have no idea if we will still be doing this podcast in 10 years. Adam barely knows what he's doing tomorrow. But what we can do is speculate about where these movies will be in that time. So turn us up real loud and get ready to hear us say Will Hold Up or Won't Hold Up a whole bunch of times!
Thank you all for a first wonderful six months of pods and can't wait to bring you more fun in 2023. Happy New Year Does it Hold Up listeners. Here's to making next year even better than this one.

For the holiday weekend we bring to you a fun little episode all about some of those magical classics. From 1964 to 1970 there was a string of some very memorable holiday tv specials.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), Frosty the Snowman (1969), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966), Santa Claus is Coming To Town (1970), and A Charlie Brown Christmas (1964)
These are some of the most well known holiday themed movies and specials. We all watched them as kids and continued to do so as adults as part of tradition. We never once stopped to think if they were even good or not. We just did it because our parents showed us them as kids and we fell in love. So now, we ask ourselves Do these Hold Up?

December 18, 2009 James Cameron's Avatar burst onto the scene with what would go on to become the highest grossing film of all time. His first movie in 12 years since 1997's Titanic. Jake Sully joins the military to become an Avatar of the local people, the Na'vi. He was meant to get information for the military, but instead he falls for Neyteri a soon-to-be leader of her tribe. From there he decides to switch sides and become a full time Na'vi and help them fight against oppression. A love story about overcoming overwhelming odds. November 7th, 2000 is the day Jim Carrey squeezed into a skintight, hairy, green outfit to bring to life one of Dr. Seuss' magical creations. The Grinch hated Christmas and wanted to ruin it for all the Whos in Whoville after they humiliated him. So he snuck into their houses on Christmas Eve and stole everything before having a change of heart. But why does Grinch hate Christmas? What's the story behind the book and character. This movie tried to answer all the questions we had the first time we read the story or saw the animated classic. And now, we try to answer the question we probably all have, Does this movie still Hold Up?

Hey everyone, it's Tuesday. You know what that means. Does it Hold Up is here with a short fun podcast for your listening pleasure. We have a little game that you could play with friends and family for the holidays. Emily and Adam picked their 10 favorite holiday movies each and then took turns asking each other to put those movies into certain situations. For example, Adam could have said to Emily that she has to replace all actors with children...then Emily would pick one of her favorite films to put into that situation. Once she's used that movie, she can't use it again. So decide carefully. Hope you enjoy and make sure to follow us on our socials. Link below.

July 14, 2000 mutants come to the big screen for the first time. Fox Studios puts together an all star cast of acting legends and up-and-comers. The US government wants all mutants (superpowered humans) to register and probably something more sinister even. Professor Xavier and his band of mutants, the titular X-Men, don't agree with this decision but want to resolve things in a peaceful way. Their opposites are Magneto and his Brotherhood of mutants who want to resolve things in a more violent way. Magneto has created a machine that can change normal humans to mutants. Which of these groups will come out on top? Will the US government get what they want? And most importantly, Does it Hold Up?

It's Tuesday. You know what that means. A shortened episode of the Does it Hold Up? podcast and we have something special for you this time. We couldn't think of an y good pitches for a sequel or reboot to 1998's Blade, but we were asking ourselves which vampires could he take down. So we decided to pick 5 movie vampires and have them face off in a battle royal to see who would be the last one standing. Our contestants are: Selene, Edward Cullen, Lestat De Lioncourt, Blade, and Hotel Transylvania's Dracula. Join us as we argue over who would come out on top of these bloodsuckers.

August 21, 1998 is when a Daywalker fought a vampire god. Wesley Snipes played the titular role in one of Marvel's first ventures into big screen movie. He's joined by a great supporting cast and some interesting characters. A lifetime of war for Blade against the undead with his partner Whistler is coming to an Armageddon as Deacon Frost is set to unleash La Magra, a literal vampire god. This dark and gritty R-Rated comic book movie would be a surprise hit with critics and audiences which would lead the studio to follow up with two sequels with varying degrees of success. Now in 2022 we want to know, Does it Hold Up?

Alight alright alright, it's really hard to make a sequel or reboot to a movie that sparked the entire franchise. You can hear our pitch in this episode, but that's not what you should stick around for. In this episode we are going to rank what we consider the best (and worst) MCU movies that are direct sequels to another MCU movie. Let us know how you think we did. Which movies will we be allowed to use:

May 6th 2008, Tony Stark dons a suit made of a metal alloy, but for some reason is dubbed Iron Man. After profiting from war for many years Tony has a near death experience that changes everything. He decides to become a living weapon and put an end to weapons manufacturing and selling of firearms. His entire life get flipped upside down and now he is seen as one of the greatest heroes the world has to offer. Marvel Studios took a huge gamble with this movie and as we all know it paid off in spades. 20+ more movies and arguably the biggest movie franchise ever all started right here with an unproven director and a problematic leading man. The movie went on to be a smash hit, but we ask the question...Does it Hold Up?

October 13, 1993 Jack Skellington sings his way into our hearts. He has his eyes on capturing Christmas all to himself and take it over so that his mundane life as King of Halloweentown can change. Sally tries to convince him it's a bad idea, but he won't listen. Audiences get your water ready and warm up your vocal chords because you're going to want to sing along with every beat of music for the whole hour plus of the movie. Stop-motion may have been used in the past, but it had never been used the way it was here. This makes a lot of people's list of yearly watched movies, but we ask the question...Does it Hold Up?

Adam and Emily are back again with another follow up episode. The last episode we talked about some of the scariest movie characters of all time and the only right way to follow that up is with some horror movies you may have never seen (or just haven't seen in a long time). These are all recommendations and you should watch them for the first time or watch them again. They are definitely worth it this Halloween season. Enjoy.
