At 18-year-old back in 2005, Joran Van Der Sloot became the prime suspect in Aruba’s most high profile case in the islands history, the disappearance of Natalie Holloway. And while that case is still officially unsolved, just five years after that, Joran was involved in yet another sensational case….the murder of Stephany Flores Ramírez down in Lima, Peru in 2010. While denying him and his friends’ involvement in Natalee’s questionable disappearance, Mr. Van Der Sloot did confess to the bludgeoning of Stephany in June 2010 as the video evidence against him was damning. For more than three decades now, the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia has been beset by the unsolved Colonial Parkway murders. Imagine it - you’ve got a special package that arrived in the mail! It’s attractively wrapped, and seems to contain something valuable. Perhaps, an expensive bottle of perfume? Between 1982 and 1996, each of them received an unexpected, nicely wrapped package in the mail; but the surprise brought them shock, trauma and injuries, and one even met her untimely death, because what they opened turned out to be an explosive device. Of the allegedly 60 people, mostly women, that he tortured and killed inside his soundproof trailer, only a few lived to share their harrowing experiences. Their stories from hell led to David Parker Ray’s conviction – though not for the crime of murder, surprisingly.

At the age of 60, Dorothea gained notoriety as the “Death House Landlady.”

For Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, it was the nearest experience to living in hell, and the closest encounter with a devil on earth.

American writer and literary critic Anatole Broyard once opined, “In an age like ours, which is not given to letter-writing, we forget what an important part it used to play in people’s lives.” In the 1970s, the ability to instantly communicate through e-mails, texting, or social media was still decades away, so people employed the use of paper and pen, the mailman, and mailboxes to stay in touch. One of life’s simple joys was writing and receiving letters. Through letters, people built friendships, sustained relationships, and strengthened romance. But for the residents of one small town in Ohio, the fun of exchanging letters was turned to terror when many of them received anonymous, vitriolic, and threatening handwritten messages. These poison pen letters of the mid-1970s came to be known as the “Circleville Letters,” and for nearly two decades, they spread fear through the mail in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio.

In fact, Oxford Dictionary declared ‘toxic’ as 2018’s “Word of the Year” for it reflected the ethos, mood, or preoccupations in 2018. But did you know that 23 years ago, American woman Gloria Ramirez from Riverside, California was nicknamed by the media as the “Toxic Woman?” She allegedly emitted noxious fumes from her body and blood that caused fainting spells and illnesses among 23 medical practitioners in a Riverside hospital’s emergency room. Eventually, the “Toxic Woman” died, and certain interesting conspiracy theories surround her death, considered a major medical mystery.

On March 9, 1976, the screaming banner story of “The Washington Post” read: 

“Five members of a Bethesda family — the wife, mother and three sons of a missing State Department official — were beaten to death in their home last week and then driven to North Carolina, where their bodies were set afire in an open grave.” The five bodies found at a burning pit in a woods in Columbia, North Carolina were later connected to deplorable murders in a split-level house in Bethesda, Montgomery County in Maryland on March 1, 1976. The wasted lives belonged to William Bradford Bishop’s family – touted as a barometer of an ideal American family in their community during the 1970s. But what their neighbors and the public didn’t know was the troubled figurehead of the Bishop family, Bradford, who when stripped of his prestigious title as an American diplomat revealed a shocking persona – that of an unhinged murderer.

Burning a person to death is unequivocally diabolical, and dying slowly while getting scorched by blazing flames is extreme torture. Burning at stake had been a method of execution practiced during ancient times, and later adopted in Europe and North America. Although the last execution by burning in the United States involving a slave accused of rape in South Carolina occurred in 1830, horrible cases of people burned to their deaths still happen today. In July 2019, Judy Malinowski of Ohio died 700 days after her crazy ex-boyfriend doused gasoline and set her on fire. 15-year old boy Demetrius Griffin, Jr. was burned alive in September 2016 inside a burning garbage can in an alley in Austin, Chicago. And in 2014, the small town of Courtland, Mississippi was grappled with shock and sadness when a well-loved 19-year old cheerleader of her high school football team was burned to death, and died shortly thereafter. Her tragic story is the focus of our episode today.

According to Sherlyn Meiers, Marshall County Historical Society Director, large crowds come to the museum just to see the early 1970s Ford LTD cruiser. And what is so special about this outmoded car that piques the interest of more people than a 1912 Maxwell, a Hart Parr Steamer, and a Studebaker Wagon of 1870s? The car with a shattered windshield and bent antennas is by all means not just any ordinary car. It was a central character in an alleged UFO encounter in 1979 which is popularly known as the “Val Johnson Incident” with Marshall County, Minnesota Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson as the sole witness of an out-of-this-world experience. Was it perpetrated by a force from outside of the human realm? Did Johnson face head-on an unidentified flying object?

On December 19, 1959, while the rest of the Christian world was in a frenzy preparing excitedly for the Christmas holidays, the small place of Osprey in Florida was in hysteria.  A young family was inconspicuously murdered taking the lives of 25-year old Cliff Walker, his 24-year old wife Christine, their 3-year old son Jimmie, and 1-year old daughter Debbie. Brooksville, Kentucky: The Unsolved Mystery of Erica Fraysure’s 1997 Disappearance
Brooksville is the county seat of Kentucky’s Bracken County which was settled before 1800 by William and Joel Woodward; thus, it was originally known as Woodward’s Crossroads. However, due to its more central location, it formally became a county seat on February 16, 1839 courtesy of the legislation sponsored by Senator David Brooks. Thus, Woodward’s Crossroads was renamed Brooksville in his honor. The small town could perhaps be described as plain, sleepy and uneventful as it was devoid of headline-grabbing mysteries, controversies and repugnant crimes. Life in Brooksville remained that way for almost 2 centuries – not until teenage girl Erica Fraysure disappeared with nary an evidence in 1997. It shook Brooksville to its core, and changed the dynamics of the people’s lives in this small Kentucky town. What’s more demoralizing is that Erica’s case remains unsolved, and is still being investigated not as a crime, but as a mysterious case of a missing person.

Craig, Alaska: The Unsolved Massacre on a Fishing Boat in 1982
Alaska, “The Last Frontier,” by almost any measure of coldness has the coldest and longest winters, the coldest summers, and the most number of freezing degree days. So just imagine the piercing coldness that blanketed Alaska on January 17, 1982 when “Cold Sunday” took place. It was a meteorological event wherein unprecedentedly cold air swept down from Canada, and plunged temperatures across much of the United States far below existing all-time record lows. Also in 1982, a man-made tragedy shocked Alaska that has become its worst cold case of massacre in history. In the tiny southeast Alaskan fishing village of Craig, eight individuals were killed by multiple gunshots, and left charred in an expensive fishing boat that was set ablaze by a still unknown perpetrator. Up to this day, it is still considered as Alaska’s most tragic unsolved mass homicide.

 North Philly, Pennsylvania: Unmasking Serial Killer Gary Heidnik - the Real-life Buffalo Bill

 One of the most chilling movie villains that brought terror on the wide screens is Jame Gumb, most popularly known as “Buffalo Bill,” from the 1991 award-winning psychological horror movie “The Silence of the Lambs.” Created by American writer Thomas Harris for his 1988 novel of the same title, the fictional character is a serial killer whose modus operandi is too fiendish. He relishes kidnapping overweight women, depriving them of food for weeks, killing and then skinning them dumping the victims in nearby rivers. As for the women’s skin, Buffalo Bill makes them into a “woman suit” for himself. This prods one to ask, “Is there a real Buffalo Bill who exists somewhere in the world?” The answer is partly “yes” because it turns out that Harris developed Buffalo Bill as a composite character – meaning, he based it not just on one, neither 2 nor 3, but six real-life serial killers. And one of them was Gary M. Heidnik who kidnapped, raped and tortured six women while holding them prisoner in a pit. He was finally sentenced to death, and executed by lethal injection on July 6, 1999 at age 55.
