FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Amnesty International Stands Firm in Support of Legacy Format Bans: A Call for Justice Against Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûm
March 31, 2025 – London, UK – In a bold and unprecedented move, Amnesty International has thrown its full support behind the recent ban of Sowing Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûm from the Legacy format of Magic: The Gathering. While the organization has long championed the rights of prisoners and the abolition of unjust detention, today, Amnesty makes an exception: we stand united in the belief that these two cards deserve to be locked away in the deepest dungeons of the Magic multiverse, never to see the light of competitive play again.
The decision to ban Sowing Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûm was not made lightly, but with a sense of justice that resonates deeply with our core values. These cards, once staples of dominance in the Legacy format, have perpetuated toxic gameplay that undermines the integrity of the game. The endless cycles of resource recursion, unfair board states, and the total disregard for strategic diversity have only served to imprison players in a cycle of frustration. For far too long, these cards have silenced the voice of fair play and decency in Magic: The Gathering.
Amnesty International believes that Sowing Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûm represent an insidious form of “cruel and unusual punishment” for players who strive for fairness and challenge. No card, no matter how powerful, should be allowed to perpetuate such an oppressive reign over the creativity and joy that defines the Magic community. These cards have been nothing short of a tyrannical force, suffocating the fun and strategy that make the Legacy format a beloved playground for players worldwide.
While our advocacy for human rights remains unwavering, we recognize the need to confront all forms of oppression – even when it comes in the form of card games. Let this serve as a warning to other cards that may follow: Amnesty International will not stand idly by while any force, real or imaginary, seeks to rob players of their freedom to enjoy the game in its purest form. We urge Wizards of the Coast to continue to exercise their power to ban cards that stifle creativity, fairness, and joy within the Magic: The Gathering community.
Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dûm are now sentenced to the deepest dungeons of Magic history. May they rot there, forgotten, as a reminder that no card is above the law of fun.

I feel like for the last ~18 months, Legacy has near-constantly been in a state of suspense, anxiously anticipating the next big change. And I can’t be alone in disliking it. I enjoy it when not just “the current meta” but the format as a whole settles, and actually allows for people to get deeper into their decks and find their place in the format. It’s what initially “entrenched” me into the format, and what I think Magic as a whole could really use.
Guess what I’m looking for is a break from the constant hype, change and even just anticipation of the next big thing that might just be around the corner. Note that I don’t mean that in a sense of wanting bans to slow down; if anything, quite the opposite. I’ve always enjoyed Legacy for being somewhat decoupled from the fast pace of what Standard used to be.
As such, we’re trying to be the change we wanna see, and dive into the depths of not just the format but the meta as a whole to establish what’s going on. Yeah, things might surely change again over the course of this year, but I really do enjoy taking a conscious step back and taking a good look at the status quo. Everyone’s different, but I feel we haven’t done that enough on a greater scale. Less change and anticipation, more admiration!

Spurred on by a recent chat on the Eternal Durdles podcast, the boys dive headfirst into the age-old lament: where have all the “real” Control decks gone in Legacy? And, more importantly—what makes one in the first place?
Armed with ancient wisdom (a.k.a. some 2007 musings from venerable sage Adrian Sullivan), we attempt to unravel the mysteries of Control, why it’s been all but exiled from Legacy, and whether we’re all (read: not Julian) just hopelessly nostalgic for a bygone era—or, you know, actually onto something.

Callum & Kai headed down into just the most presentable suburbs of beautiful Lyon, France for the annual MTG Ones event. Commentating Day 1, the themselves jumped into the action on Sunday with their trusted Doomsday and Painter variants.
In true Everyday Eternal fashion, they once again faced each other for an elimination match for Top8. That, and without a hotel. Because forgetting to book your flight is so 2023.

“New Year, New Me” Callum thought as he…takes down a Legacy Challenge with Painter. Okay, that one didn’t last long, but who can’t blame him? Cutting through the competition like a 10-0 knife through butter never felt this great. Check out what he has to say about his new list that is quite the deviation from what we used to rock in the archetype.
Also, Kai just returned from his honeymoon. Find out why he barely got to see his wife during it. Yes.

With Callum busy bringing metal to rural German villages, Kai and Julian invited BOTH Eternal Weekend North American champions to the show. By that, we mean Kai was doing all the scheduling work while Julian was kitesurfing in Egypt.
Join us as Max Gilmore and Kelvin Wallace share their thoughts about their deck choices and states of the two formats. One of them in particular straight-up thinks his team broke a format in half despite not casting Psychig Frog or Brainstorm – and why he won the tournaments out of spite after being disrespected.

One of our all-time most beloved episodes was a review of the origins of the Legacy format and the first seven bans required to keep it stable (and Survival of the Fittest).
Today we continue our History Channel…series? I don’t make the rules, so I assume two episodes on the same topic almost half a decade apart constitute a series. Join us as we look back at how Wizards of the Coast’s handling of the format evolved, as we share their reasonings and our own stories from around the time. Oh, and Kai got married, like the madman he is.

What the Dauphiné Libéré is to the Tour de France, the Anzid Eternal Showdown is to Eternal Weekend now, I guess? Either way, Magic Online recently hosted the preparation event for the upcoming big Legacy tournaments across the globe, and we’re here to review the results.
Kai also reports back from his boot camp piloting the most difficult deck in the format, and whether he’s ready to rock it in Prague next month.

Another giant Legacy event in the books, and of course Kai used to go to kindergarten with the winner, or something. We’ve given up on finding any halfway decent Legacy player in Japan whom Kai isn’t associated with in one way or another. I’m genuinely not sure whether this is a running gag or actually true – but we’re all here for it either way.
Get a great look back at what went down in the biggest Legacy tournament in the world this year thus far – and find out which “hardest deck in the format” Kai is gonna rock at EW Europe, and why literally nobody in the Discord was able to guess it. Spoiler: previous generations of gamers actually went to prison for this, so Kai could finally be free.
