Game of the Year happened and we lost hard. But hey, we got ninety minutes of talking about stuff. There’s preppy bitchy Vincent. There’s the very stupid backstory for Sephiroth’s Masamune. There’s the history of the Bubble Bobble Franchise. SCM gives us the Calvinist theology behind Sphene’s latest evil scheme.

The Game Awards nominees were announced and we’re in full punditry mode trying to predict the winners. Just how well will FFVII Rebirth do? It’s our Game of the Year (probably, I mean, still a month to go in 2024), but it will be the Dorito Pope’s? We also go down memory lane to find out what games the Golden Joystick Awards thought were GOTY in 1983, apparently that dogshit Ghostbusters game for the NES was a runner’s up. Different time, man.
Also… the election happened. :V

This episode we discuss the 1996 John Frankenheimer disaster, The Island of Dr. Moreau. Or well, we don’t, we instead mourn the passing of two Final Fantasy mobile games. Or well, we don’t really do that either. We talk about the inevitable decay of cable network programming and inevitable decay of the Spoony One. And Moo Deng for a bit.
It’s an episode. We did the thing. That’s all I can say.

There’s BlueHighwind, there’s Techno, and there’s SomeComputerScienceMage, we’re all back together for this month celebrating FFXVI’s PC release and the weird history of Final Fantasy games on PC. Also discussed are Yoshi-P’s pleas for moral conduct in the modding scene, Nomura’s inevitable retirement, and a kind of grim acceptance that everything will end one day.

There’s a lot of news this month. Brave Exvius is closing down. There’s harassment against a voice actress. FF16 comes to PC.
But also I ramble for hour to help Final Fantasy fans understand football. If you’ve ever wondered why the Cleveland Browns remind you of Don Corneo, I’m here to explain that. Which team is Sephiroth? Which team is Lightning? Sportsball!

There’s no big Final Fantasy release to talk about yet because we recorded this a week ago and are not ready to discuss Dawntrail. So instead this month is basically just a generic video game podcast. The increasingly scare-quoted “E3” season has passed, we had some thoughts about it.
We talk about some Final Fantasy news, there’s not a ton. FFIX and Tactics remaster rumors. SE President “Kazuma” Kiryu is less interested in AI. Then it’s how excited we are for Zelda, AssCreed, Metroid, MGS, Demonschool, and how the bizarre 2010 Konami E3 conference still gives us life and energy years later.

Lots of news this month as Square Enix’s new financial forecast leads us to ponder the dark reality of a world where video games make less money. It’s a brutal period in the industry and that brutality has made it to Final Fantasy Land. Why didn’t you buy FFVII Rebirth? What did we do wrong? How did we fail you?
Then we talk about Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, a baffling and bizarre and sometimes amazing landmark feature of technical ambition gone mad. It’s the movie that led series creator Sakaguchi to a dark future of chilling in Hawaii for twenty years. Poor bastard.

Final Fantasy XVI has a second round of DLC, Rising Tide. (AKA: ROLL TIDE!) We can finally close the book on a game that… existed. Cannot really call it “beloved”, at least not by this crowd. It was definitely a complete product with a beginning, middle, and ending. It had… moments. Some of them were decent. So in the end… it was a game. Definitely a game.
We kinda ramble for the last twenty minutes. That scamp Yuji Naka is in the news. Free Companies means Prostitution according to Xbox. We discover something called “Project Hikari” is still on SE’s official docket for the Oculus Rift, though it must have been cancelled by now.

The SPOILER CAST!! B-b-b-b-bonus pod! About Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s ending and lore and… whatever all that means. Where we bring in Catuse, who has not played this game, mostly as a rhetorical device to bounce arguments off of him.
Somehow the conversation finds itself going to Danganronpa, Kingdom Hearts, *and* Homestuck. It’s the worst podcast we’ve ever done.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been out for a month, which is just long enough to actually finish the dang thing. It’s a big, big game. And there’s a million things to talk about, from romance to sidequests to music to open world design to everything. This is an incredible game and surprisingly, even the wiki resident Oldhead Hater, had a great time. This podcast includes spoilers up to everything up until Chapter 14, the big ending spoilers will be covered in another show.

Today is FFVII-2 Day! Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 Day! FFVII Rebirth Day! None of us got early media copies, so we can only talk about what we have access to.
First off, BlueHighwind went to the cinema to watch Advent Children Complete (dubbed), and is shocked and horrified by how old he is. Then the entire crew has been playing the FFVII Rebirth demos and have thoughts. There is hype in the air. Will that hype survive the actual game? Well, we won’t know for another month.

How are video games doing in 2024? Well, that buzzing noise you’re hearing is the screams of the damned, thousands upon thousands of jobs destroyed. It is bad out here, bro. We gotta talk about that first.
Then comes all the usual Final Fantasy news and stuff. President Square Enix had his annual letter. AI continues to be a thing. NTFs somehow continue to be a thing. But in better news: people are very horny about the new FFXIV expansion. People have discovered a lot about themselves with Female Hrothgars. And people are also very horny about new FFVII: Rebirth trailers.

Technobliterator is in the UK on holiday, so does not have the best mic with him. Please forgive the rough and ready audio quality. SomeColorMage sounds beautiful, as always.
It is the end of 2023, so we discuss the huge glut of news that came by. There’s all that happened in The Game Awards. The Final Fantasy XVI DLC. The Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth theme song. The Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth Cait Sith stuff (who is Scottish, not Irish, in case some podcast hosts do not know the difference, not naming names). The Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth Red XIII Stuff.
And then we nominate our choices for Final Fantasy of the Year 2023. It’s a long two hour podcast. A lot happens.

Food. It is what you eat. You either eat it, or you die. Or you die very slowly. Or you die anyway from the food you eat. Either way, you’re always eating, you’re always digesting, and you’re always dying.
Final Fantasy is not really a series much interested in food, but it’s Thanksgiving season here in America so let’s talk Final Fantasy foods. Catuse has the Final Fantasy XIV cookbook and gives us a quick rundown of the recipes he’s tried and the ones he’s interested to show off.

It is not a huge month for Final Fantasy news. But we still have a show! There’s the new Viper class in Final Fantasy XIV’s upcoming expansion. Young Sephiroth is having adventures in Ever Crisis. And people thirst for Estinien.
Then we discuss the many horror elements that have appeared in Final Fantasy games, from the Train Graveyard to the jumpscares of FFXV. Does Hell House make for a good Halloween costume? Can a JRPG really be “scary”?

Most of the Wiki Staff was in Australia this month due to either A) living there, or B) going to the BIG WIKI WEDDING. Mazel Tov to Yuanchosaan and ScatheMote, now married.
Along the way, BlueHighwind stopped off in Tokyo to visit the Eorzea Cafe in Akihabara, a very strange experience with surprisingly good food.
Also it’s a huge month for Final Fantasy news. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis was released on phones and is as disposable as you’d imagine. Then we had the next big trailer for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, now officially releasing in February 2024. There’s also discussions of the existential crisis for game developers, the big Taylor x Kelce bombshell news, and whether any rapper has surpassed Tupac.

Final Fantasy XVI Discussion Part 3, basically. SPOILERS ABOUND. BlueHighwind published his long review of the game and that sets the tone of the discussion. Some of us are very positive on the game, some are not. The discussion goes places such as “what do we want in a sequel?”, “why is Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom inferior/superior?”, and finally: “is Clive Jesus Christ?”

Big episode, Final Fantasy XVI is a month old. And we’re going full hard core SPOILERS!!! on this thing. Nothing is safe, all bets are off, and somebody on the podcast is unafraid to be very mean to this game where it fails. (Largely around women, why does FFXVI hate women?) We struggle to stay on-topic and even do the news because there’s so much FFXVI to cover.
We also have the big new upcoming expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, Dawntrail. Yoshi-P has been extremely busy, how does he sleep? The Warrior of Light has slicked his hair back and is on a tropical vacation to fantasy Latin America for tacos. We dream of Female Hrothgars.

Final Fantasy XVI has been out for a week! The game we’ve been discussing for basically as long as this podcast has had an RSS feed is here, is now real. We’ve played 20 hours roughly, or if you’re BH, you’ve only played 10.
However, this is a first-look, even if our opinions are mostly fully-formed at this point. **SPOILER WARNING** up to roughly the second time skip.
Many things are discussed including, the snack geometry of our protagonist. Who is the Donald and Goofy to Clive’s Sora. Whether any of the five of us have gotten a Game Over once in this game. And how much fun can gameplay be that it makes up for some of the most boring sidequests ever seen in the history of humanity.

Final Fantasy XVI releases in under a week, meaning that June will simply be too epic a month for just one episode. It’s a rare mid-month *BONUSODE*!! Where we discuss everything from FFVII Rebirth, FFVII Ever Crisis, Door Dash, and so much more. Techno wonders if Bugenhagen is really Red XIII’s grandpa. BlueHighwind ponders a Sephiroth-Cloud-Tifa tentacle polycule. SomeColorMage is legally able to take SE money to promote Foamstars.
Next time, it’s gonna be Final Fantasy XVI, I promise you. More Final Fantasy XVI than you mind can handle.

BlueHighwind is back, and is tired of talking about all the Final Fantasy XVI media cycling. So instead he brought on Yuanchosaan and ScatheMote, who have just recently played/replayed Final Fantasy XV. Remember that one? Noctis? Boy stuff? Turns out, there are other, more positive perspectives on that game. People do like that game for a reason.
Also, somehow medieval English history keeps coming up in the discussion. We don’t know what to do with that.

BlueHighwind had a sudden family emergency so could not make the recording. But we winged it and through together and episode in his absence. This month we discuss the news of Square Enix’s shaky start with AI gaming, new directions in the MMOs, and at the end, the horrible news of the closure of Waypoint, a great voice in video game media. Solidarity with those folks.
Also, we discuss a major, more accurate revision to the Final Fantasy VII timeline page. Because we do edit these wiki pages sometimes.

This month we have tons of news. Square Enix is moving on with a new president. Final Fantasy XI is moving on with a new producer. Final Fantasy XVI is having a major media blitz as Yoshi-P sets us up for the game’s launch in June. And E3 is dead. And NFTs… again.
While discussing the hype or lack of hype or vague numbness about FFXVI, we ponder what an RPG is, whether ‘JRPG’ is a term that needs retirement, the entire state of gaming as an industry, and what the meat-arrows do in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

This month we have a less-Gigachad-sized episode with a nice reasonable 80 minutes! The big release of the month is Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line, the music game celebration of FF history, which lots of us have been obsessing over and enjoying. But is it as good as the Kingdom Hearts alternative?
Then there’s a major scandal tearing through the halls of FFXIV. Yoshi-P is angry. Yoshi-P is very angry.

This month we have another Gigachad-sized episode with two hours of news and 2022 Year in Review. We have to discuss big new DLCs for old games. The new game Forspoken and whether Twitter shitty opinions are worth our time. Square Enix is doing NFTs for some reason again. And Final Fantasy XIV has a new Superboss.
Then the big subject: Techno is very excited to talk about all the work the team has done on the FFVII pages. Also another subject: what was the Final Fantasy of the Year? Was it even a Final Fantasy at all?

This month another massive news block: tons of Final Fantasy XVI news and possible converts to the faith. Chocobo GP turning into a #DeadGame (maybe). Big updates to Stranger of Paradise, two *huge* updates to FFXIV, and with great difficulty, trying to decide if the new Forspoken demo is good or not.
Then for the main course, Crisis Core Reunion came out this month. Technobliterator is really excited about it. BlueHighwind hated the original and is unsure about the improvements. Then we must wonder what this all means for FFVII Rebirth/FFVII Remake 2.

PS: There was no time for it on the podcast, but if you like classic Final Fantasy games, you gotta play Chained Echoes, the new indie JRPG that’s a wonderful buffet of the best ideas from FFVI, FFIX, FFXII, and Chrono Trigger. That’s an incredible game, well worth your time – Eric.

So we cover the death of Google Stadia, the death of The First Soldier, our host company Fandom buying a huge portion of games media, Final Fantasy XVI’s diversity controversy, and everybody’s favorite topic: NFTs.
Then with a new version of the classic Tactics Ogre being released this month, we have to wonder, is it better than Final Fantasy Tactics?

Technology has won out and the podcast recording for this new month of October 2022 was lost. Since it’s last minute and re-recording sounds like no fun, we’re just gonna post an old episode on the feed, one of the classics, the very first attempt the FFWiki did on podcasting.
This episode is about what was then the upcoming game, World of Final Fantasy and its demo at the NY Comic Con, also Dissidia NT, which was still upcoming. We also ponder the importance of Hiroyuki Ito and whether ATB and turn-based are actually meaningfully different.

This month we discuss the announcements Square Enix made at the Tokyo Game Show, and the many more announcements they made at the Nintendo Direct. We also ponder and deeply worry about the company’s continued interest in NFTs. Also for some reason NFL football keeps coming up.
Then we all ask ourselves “which classic game should Square Enix remaster/remake/port next?”

This month we cold open on a short discussion of the finale Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road in pre-discussion that we never actually circled around back to in the main episode, so I kept it. (SPOILERS)
As for the main episode, we cover Forespoken’s messy marketing campaign, discuss how awesome the remake of Live a Live is, and worry about Yoshi P.’s Final Fantasy XVI’s battle system. Then we do some actual Wiki Talk, specially the recurring problem of shipping wars happening on our Final Fantasy VII pages.
It is then decided that #clephiroth is the One True Pairing.

This month is just an epic. A troubled epic, which required some rerecording and please let me know if the audio levels are bad, I’ll try to fix them.
We go into the various nonsense of the modern age: billboards, NTFs, rumors of Sony purchasing Square Enix. And then for the main event, a quick summation and review of Mobius Final Fantasy, the highest profile mobile game in series history. It’s a fascinating project that dares bring revolutionary politics and post-modernism into a JRPG, but also squanders all its potential by being a disposable mobile game that was indeed, disposed of. SUMMER OF MORB!!!

This month we actually *do* have a ton to talk about! It’s E3 season or Summer Games Fest season or the dead light of the long-past star we called “E3” season, whatever we’re calling this June Games Events stuff, and Final Fantasy brought it. We discuss the huge announcements for the Final Fantasy VII universe, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second part of the remake. Then we move on to Final Fantasy XVI and the implications of maybe no playable party. Also there are wagers. Things are bet, wisely or unwisely.

This month… um… I dunno, man. I’ll be honest, we don’t have a ton to talk about. Mostly just shooting the shit about the upcoming Summer Games… Thing. (Whatever you call this June gyre of news media that replaced the now-dead E3.) Then we talked about Square Enix selling off their western studios and how weird… everything is. The economy is weird, games are weird, our energy is weird. It’s an hour of… stuff. Audio content has been made.

This month the Final Fantasy Wiki spends most of its time obsessing over a very relevant and within wiki scope topic: Kingdom Hearts IV. It is the biggest news of April and thus, the topic that must be discussed. (And I wasn’t going to let the podcast happen without talking KH4, sorry-not sorry.) We then move on to the Final Fantasy XIV news and the horror of scarcity capitalism creeping into our precious digital socialist commonwealths. And this was recorded before the update on FFXVI, so we didn’t get to that.
This month’s FFWiki Podcast is hosted by BlueHighwind, Technobliterator, and SomeColorMage. Podcast music is “La Montana de los Caballos Jovenes” by XPRTNovice off the OC Remix Album Balance and Ruin, based on Mt. Koltz from FFVI.

This month Square Enix released four major games and we’ve played most of them. We start with the disaster that was Babylon’s Fall, then continue with the disaster that was Chocobo GP, then discuss the legitimately awesome success of Triangle Strategy, before ending on our plans to KILL CHAOS with Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins. (Which might be a successful failure? Who is to say?) This episode we see how bad Chocobo GP’s demo can be, how much BlueHighwind wishes that every game was an SRPG, and how Princess Sarah destroyed true love.

This month BlueHighwind Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Square Enix has a big crowded release schedule soon, which starts off with a bang with Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster. We end up relitigating the same arguments we’ve been having about them and their production for eight months now. We then get to Robert Pattinson’s Final Fantasy fandom, Stranger in Paradise anticipation, and Kefka impressions.

This month BlueHighwind was too busy drinking Bloody Marys in Vegas, so a few other people decide to discuss this month’s news by themselves. A game with no release date got delayed, the president of Square Enix thinks the future is non-fungible, shipping drama went nuclear and the Italians saw more of Tifa than they knew they wanted to. We also talk about how 2021 went for the wiki and what we want for 2022.

(BlueHighwind apologizes he was on vacation and couldn’t post this episode to the feed until well in February, he’ll never take a vacation again if that helps.)

This month we might be a bit hungover after Christmas and have a very sloppy energy. Final Fantasy XIV Mooncrash, I mean, Endwalker, is our topic. The entire expansion is summarized, whether the hosts like it or not. We also discuss the issue of the game’s over-crowding, the hidden horror of Male Viera, and the abundantly clear horror of Imagine Dragons.
This FFWiki Podcast is hosted by BlueHighwind (Eric Fuchs), SomeColorMage, Catuse, and Hexedmagica and an annoying rumbling noise in the background sometimes that I couldn’t edit out.

This month we cover two new big releases in the series. Those being Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier and Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster. One gets more a more positive review than the other. We then turn discussion over to Square Enix’s big earnings report for 2021, and conclude on a look back on Final Fantasy XV on its fifth birthday. Its place in history remains controversial, to say the least.
This month’s FFWiki Podcast is hosted by BlueHighwind (Eric Fuchs), Technobliterator, SomeColorMage, Catuse, and Hexedmagica, who kinda joined the call without warning and started talking. We couldn’t stop him. Nothing could be done.

This month we cover the news coming out of the Tokyo Game Show and other big news announcements – none of which have Final Fantasy XVI news. We discuss the Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster, the new games from Hiroyuki Ito and Yoko Taro, the new demo for Stranger of Paradise, and SORA!!!!!!!!!

We also have a special guest, Sreliata, a fan artist who assists the wiki in ripping graphics and polygons out of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Sadly, her internet crashed and she could only join us for a brief time.

This month we cover the first three games of the FF Pixel Remaster, whether Final Fantasy XI still matters, a cookbook, and finally the one Final Fantasy game we’ve always wanted to play but never have. (Apologies if audio levels are less than perfect, we have done all we can to fix that in post-production.)
