Listener email:
Dear Ben and BJ,
First, I just want to say how much I enjoy the show. I have been listening for a couple years now and always enjoy your commentary as well as the other members of /film, particularly BJ Colangelo. In fact, my teenage daughter and I went to see the film blink twice based on your enthusiastic review.
After listening to the episode reviewing blink twice, as well as hearing BJ discuss the film on The Filmcast podcast, in addition to reading your article about the ending of the movie, I had to write in.
My daughter and I are both big horror movie fans, and really loved the film, so thank you again for the recommendation. However, I was fascinated when we walked out of the movie as she saw the ending very differently than I did…. when the camera shows Frida talking to Sara outside in the grass, looking at the burning house, and then slowly pans to Slater king as Sarah says, do you wish you had made a different choice?…. My daughter Violet read that as Frida deciding to save King rather than Frida, but obviously having mixed feelings about that terrible choice, which she would’ve had to make quickly while the house was burning down. So I guess she read it as a much darker ending, with Frida, abandoning the sisterhood, saving king and then subjugating him, and taking over his empire. But obviously having a little bit of conflicted feelings and guilt that she should’ve saved Sara instead (hence, briefly hallucinating a conversation with Sara, calmly questioning the choice that she made, reflecting Frida‘s conscience).
She had the darker take, which she thought was indicated by seeds laid earlier in the film, such as Frida not believing and respecting her friend Jess’s worry that things are not right when just wants to leave the island. And of course, the Geena Davis character.
I just thought that was an interesting read on the ending that I’ve not seen discussed. Again, love the show, and keep doing great work on the website as well!
Take care
Jennifer (from San Antonio)

On the August 30, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film editor and chief film critic Chris Evangelista to talk about what we’re calling Steven Spielberg’s close encounters.
Movies that were eventually made, and not just ones that he considered making, but he seemed to actively work on in some capacity before not directing. So “Night Skies,” his sci-fi horror movie that would have been a spiritual follow-up to Close Encounters, does not count because that was never made and therefore we have nothing to judge.

Listener emails: Ross W. from Ontario, California writes in: “Hey Ben, While I enjoyed you and Ryan talking about video game movies last Thursday, the one movie that I was shouting at my car speakers (not really) that you missed was Tron! I saw it in the theaters when it first came out (I’m old), and have loved it ever since. Jeff Bridges and David Warner are great in it, and those very early computer graphics still look amazing. Other than that, you guys did a great job (King of Kong is fantastic). Love the podcast, keep up the great work.
Brandon from Knoxville, TN writes: Ben and Ryan, I’m a film buyer at Regal who also oversees Indian and South Asian releases for our theatre network. Pleased to hear you acknowledge Indian films occasionally sneaking into the box office top 10 over the past handful of weeks on your July 29 episode. For the past few years, especially since the smash success of RRR in early 2022, interest from North American audiences in Indian and South Asian titles has steadily grown. Over 4 million people of South Asian descent call the United States home, and they have established a large and dedicated audience for Indian releases.
India produces more films by volume than Hollywood, with the main four languages of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Punjabi featuring in the majority of releases. The most highly anticipated movies also come to American theatres around major Indian holidays and festivals. Several titles are coming to theaters to mark India Independence Day on August 15, and multiple films could land in the domestic box office top 10. Dasara on October 12, Diwali on November 1, and Christmas should also see plenty of Indian movies at American cinemas with films featuring the most popular South Asian actors in some of 2024’s most notable releases. Looking forward to hearing more of your commentary on the Indian film industry in future podcasts!

Jake from Ontario wrote to us on June 30: My question concerns the growing disparity between the TV Critic and audience Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The Boys, The Acolyte, and The Bear all received glowing critics scores and negative audience scores. In a recent episode, Jacob mentioned that although he loved the first three seasons of The Boys, he didn’t enjoy season 4 and passed the review to a colleague who liked it more. This practice caught my attention.
Could you discuss the prevalence and ethics of this practice? Wouldn’t it be good business to publish a negative review when 9.3/10 sites are praising a show? In my opinion, Jacob would have been the perfect person to review this season and represent a large contingent of the audience who isn’t just reacting to the anti-MAGA politics, as some suggest is the reason for the lower audience score. Sorry if this sounds prickly, I’m legitimately curious to hear your thoughts.
PS: Please focus on this specific practice and avoid discussing review-bombing or the binary nature of the Tomatometer, as those topics have been covered well by the podcast in the past.

Listener email: Julie writes in: Love your show! I think the major reason people don’t go to chain theaters is not how big our TVs are or that everything is streaming, but the number of screens we have. We have 2 TVs, 2 laptops, and 2 cell phones for 2 people, and all have been used to watch movies. When I was a kid in the ‘70s, we had one TV in our living room that was controlled by my brother and my parents. If I wanted to watch anything else, I had to go to a movie theater. So when Bad News Bears came out, I saw it in the big chain theater 11 times! I love movies now, but do prefer one of the many repertory theaters we have here in Portland, Oregon. People are respectful and they serve beer/wine/cider and pizza without being expensive. I hardly ever go to our local chain theater, which is a pretty nice Regal, and when I do, there are usually about five other people in the theater and I never buy any concessions because it’s too expensive. I just can’t imagine it will be open much longer.
Listener email: Donnie from Florida writes in: Love the podcast and have been listening for years. Shout-out to Peter and Hoai-Tran Bui, I still miss hearing them. My question is how do you find things to watch on streaming services? I notice the menus are just awful. We can only find the current 8 to 10 things that that particular streaming service is pushing at the time. Is there a site or system that you, or anyone else at /Film, uses to find the needles in the haystack of horrible streaming service menus?
If Ryan happens to be on the episode, can he explain how the heck Peacock is still a thing?

Shout out to Angelica from North Texas, who wrote us an email pointing out a fascinating connection between the movie Burnt and season 3 of The Bear. Without spoiling things, I can say that there’s a moment in season 3 where Richie sees a fork on the floor of the restaurant, and if Angelica’s theory is correct, it could have pretty big consequences for what might happen in season 4. One Blink-And-You'll-Miss-It Moment In The Bear Season 3 Could Have Huge Consequences
Karissa from Wisconsin sent us an email last month that I’ve been meaning to get to, and I thought now would be a good time: Love the podcast, and have been listening for years. Lately, I’ve been intrigued by the discussion between you and Ryan about the state of theaters. My husband and I started dating at a theater, and always watched probably 2-3 movies a month in theaters before Covid. We love theaters so much that we had our wedding pictures in a new theater that was built in our town in 2015. However, Covid made us update our TV and sound system at home for watching movies. It also made us less tolerant of bad moviegoers.
Talking with our friends, we all agree that we have a great theater. However, we cannot stand the people that go to movies. Movies for us have been ruined by cell phones. Even adults are using their phones and being obnoxious during the movie. Between cell phone light and just rude talking, we barely see movies in theaters anymore. We started sitting in the front 3 rows, but half the time, we still see their lights because they’re so bright.
We get so annoyed with it, we are renting a theater for us and our friends to see Twisters in July. I can deal with whispering and occasional talking. I cannot deal with the constant cell phone use anymore. Do you think theaters could do anything about cell phones? I know that would bring a lot of people I know back to theaters.

In The Mailbag:
Dalton from Seattle wrote in: In response to you and Ryan discussing renting theaters: We have a theater in Seattle that does just what you two were describing. A few years ago, some friends and I rented out The Beacon Theater here in Seattle. It's a small, very fun vintage theater with one screen. They serve candy, popcorn, beer and wine. They offer an amazing service where you can request an old film, and they will track down the digital film print of the movie to screen for you. We watched the original Ghostbusters movie. It was such a blast. It's such a cool business idea. I'm hoping to rent it out and request the original 90's TMNT sometime in the near future. Thought you guys might get a kick out of that!
Finally circling back around to the rest of the email written in a while ago by Wes from Dallas/Ft. Worth, and there are multiple points to address here. First, he wants to know, Ryan, why the world of box office reporting does not always take inflation into account when comparing past data to current data.
Similarly: why is there such a focus on dollars and not the number of tickets sold?
While I wouldn't mind paying a premium to go to the movies, it would have to come with a premium experience, and it just isn't so. And what does that mean for people with lower incomes? Unfortunately, it seems like we are approaching a point where a premium experience may not even be possible if studios can't justify making enough movies for theaters to exist. Assuming movie theaters start closing down, what outlook do you see ten years from now if things don't change? Will going to the movies be like going to the Opera with limited showings only on specific dates and very expensive tickets? What changes would you make to fix the industry?

Listener email: Mitch from Yuma, AZ wrote in: Hey Ben and Ryan, I just wanted to hear some more of your thoughts on what you talked about on last Monday’s episode. I was stunned when you said for a healthy box office, the average person needed to see 3-4 movies a year, because my wife and I see a movie at least every two weeks. I know we are above average, but I figured everyone went to the theater on average once a month. My question is, if we really only need 3-4 visits per person per year to have a healthy box office, why have the theaters not figured out a monthly subscription-based plan yet? I know there’s AMC Stubs A-List Premiere program, but I don’t know much about it because we don’t have an AMC in my town, we have a Harkins and a Regal. (My wife and I personally love Harkins.) There was the big fiasco known as MoviePass, but how does a program where you pay $30 a month to watch as many movies as you want NOT work? Give the studios 75% of that subscription, divvied up amongst them, while the theater makes their money on the concession sales, like they always do. The more times people are in the theater, the more popcorn and soda they will buy. I don’t know if you two have insight or ideas on how this could work or why it hasn’t yet, but I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thank you and keep up the great work.

Listener email from YiFeng from Boston, Mass:
I hate to bug you, but the recent podcast conversations about disc rot & backing up physical media have some misinformation that I'm hoping other listeners will write in and correct, but here are my corrections:
1. Hollywood/MPA issue commercial discs that are copyrighted protected by CSS, AACS, BD+, ROM Mark and probably many more techniques. You can't insert a disc into your computer and use a file explorer and just copy the disc - you will get an error.
2. If you want to backup ANYTHING from the disc, you will need to bypass copyright protection by using tools such as Redfox and DVDfab. Please note that at the time of this writing, US DMCA laws stipulates that you *DO* have a right to backup, but the tools used to rip discs are illegal, which is why all of them are from outside of America:
https://lifehacker.com/is-it-legal-to-rip-a-dvd-that-i-own-5978326
It's a bit of a gray/catch-22 type of scenario. Just a warning there.
3. Handbrake.fr is only a tool that will re-compress & shrink your disc files. For example a Blu-ray may contain a movie file that is 35 gigabytes, but you can use Handbrake to compress that down to 10 gigabytes - that is what the tool does. Handbrake and compression tools do *NOT* rip discs as they do not bypass the copyright protections put in place by the MPA.
4. Finally, regarding disc rot, the Library of Congress has a study on that from ~14+yrs ago but it's still relevant: https://www.loc.gov/preservation/scientists/projects/cd_longevity.html#:~:text=Statistical%20analysis%20of%20the%20EOL,reach%20EOL%20within%2010%20years
Basically the net sum is it is extremely small and that study encompassed computer CD ROM (beyond just movie discs). If anything, the disc qualities of today's Quality Assessment far surpasses that. I'd wager to say it's probably less than 1% if the library of Congress performs a study today. Most of the time, if you read the study, the rot has to do with users storing in high humidity, non-environmentally controlled locations. If you care for it, the disc will outlast humanity. It is (after all) plastic and we all know now that plastic is basically not going to degrade for hundreds of years (green issue is another whole separate conversation). Are there manufacturing errors? Absolutely, but they are extremely miniscule. Here is an example from Criterion below, but they still offer the program to replace the discs:
https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/3317-exchanging-defective-discs
Hopefully, this clears up some confusion. Quick summary is you can rip but you'll need to bypass copy protection, and disc rot is basically a non-issue.
Actually, that brings up another interesting point:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_degradation
Let's say you are Warner Brothers and you have the full uncompress filmmaker files of the camera capture or dcp on your servers, THOSE FILES WILL ALSO ROT even if they are on server/enterprise-grade hard drive!
There needs to be a process of not just making backup copies, but double checking that the data they have and also the backup copies are still not impacted by the rot. CURRENTLY, most enterprise data technicians do NOT have a process to account for data-rot. 99% of the enterprise companies do not even think about that.
Yes, they have backups, but if your original is rotted and you back up the rotted data, both your originals and your backed up copies are all junk because no one is opening the files to verify if the backups are still legit and clean. Maybe AI will help to protect against this, it can be done... but there is an added cost to make this work. No one is willing to foot the bill for it.
In other words, even backed up copies of movie media are subject to rot, just like physical nitrate/film negatives!
All the other stuff you need to know:

Listener email: Hey Ben! I was listening to you and Ryan on the podcast talking about disc media rot and just wanted to share with the class that there is a good computer program for taking a DVD or Blu-Ray and creating a copy of the contents on your computer. You can transfer all the properties of the movie, including subtitles, etc. The application is called HandBrake. Computer files are infinitely duplicatable, so you could put as many copies of the same movie on as many hard drives as your heart desires.
Obviously, this program could be abused and used for pirating movies (don’t use it for that!), but as long as you are only creating digital copies of movies that you bought and paid for and only for personal use, everything is kosher. Thanks! - Alec

My “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (still sealed) and “Veronica Mars” (played once before) collections only played half the episodes when I revisited these TV shows last year, and those were not the only ones. Blu-rays decay slower than DVDs, so going for those and creating backups seems to be the best way to keep the favorites available.

On the February 29, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film staff writer and box office analyst Ryan Scott to talk about some of their favorite sci-fi sequels.
Opening Banter: Full disclosure, this episode might be chaotic. I had several plans for a themed Leap Day episode, and every single one of them ended up falling through, leaving me scrambling to come up with something to do at the last minute. But Ryan suggested we talk about some of our favorite sci-fi sequels in honor of Dune: Part Two, and since that movie actually does seem big enough to justify multiple episodes about it (or at least episodes that are ostensibly related to it), that sounded like a good idea to me.

Opening Banter: Listener email from Sampson Dewitt: Hey gang, listener from Florida via Spotify. On Thursday’s episode, ya’ll discussed the cost of releasing movies to theatres and referenced the “print” cost possibly not applying. I was hoping you can elaborate on this: are the movies we see in major theatres no longer shown on film? One of the key reasons to go to a theatre for me is seeing the movie on film (similar to listening to music on vinyl as opposed to digital), so this would kind of be a bummer.

My question is, in a stretch between Migration and Kung Fu Panda 4, why does something like this not go to theaters? People that love taking their kids to the movies or kids having birthday parties don’t have anything right now, and this would have been perfect.

YiFeng from Boston wrote in responding to our discussion about Moana 2 being converted from a TV show into a theatrical feature film that’s coming out later this year. I was expressing concern about that, but YiFeng reminded me in this email that Toy Story 2 was originally being planned as a direct-to-video release, but ended up getting revamped for theatrical.
Sue from Colorado writes: Your reviews of old films are always interesting, and I was thrilled to listen to your review of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir this week. It’s been my all-time favorite movie for decades – a lovely blend of romance, comedy, history, ghost story, and drama, along with having a wonderful score. I’m so happy you enjoyed it, too.
