As AT40 moved into the 1980s, the show continued to highlight the weekly Billboard Top 40. Casey Kasem and the show had become as important to pop music as the music itself. However, the sale of the show's distributor and changing tastes of the Top 40 audience led to competition and, ultimately, the end of Kasem's run on the show he created. He would resurface on new countdown shows, but he would continue to have to navigate changes in the music landscape.
