It’s BC Friday, hooray? No, it’s a good thing because it means you can shovel some bucks to artists and labels and entities you’d rather not get some of that cash won’t. So, that’s good! Otherwise, just rolling along and dreaming of going back to the planetarium. Boy am I tired.

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite The Body’s Lee Buford on the show. First, we get the other perspective on Dis Fig & The Body’s “Orchards of a Futile Heaven.” This record just absolutely rips. Then, things go off with the Jason Molina’s crushing music, Neutral Milk Hotel’s being too ubiquitous, music that’s so vapid it rocks, Peter Gabriel’s wild romantic lines, the brutality and awesomeness of “Cop Killer,” Willie Nelson bringing a sadness to someone else’s song that is devastating, the undeniable nature of Dead Prez, our mutual Roman Empire, and more!

Go over to the Patreon to give it a listen!
But, TWO - count’ em TWO - albums of the week since the podcast will be off next week (holiday vibes), and it’s my show so I can do whatever I want. Both are gems, and I listened to them back-to-back yesterday (Melford then Kowalsky) and it REALLY worked. Highly recommend that.
Then, jump to about 15 minutes if you want to get straight to my conversation with Markus Floats about his latest album, “Fourth Album.”

A full-house today in the Foxy Digitalis zone. A quick recap on the opening week(end) of my exhibition, “The Sound Leaves,” which was among the best times I’ve had in a while. And if that wasn’t enough, around 12 minutes in, I have a conversation with RVNG Intl’s Matt Werth about the new boxed set of Pauline Anna Strom reissues - essential listening if there ever was!

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Patrick Shiroishi on the show. It would take a novel to list all the incredible things Patrick is doing these days, but notably he has new album out this week, “I was too young to hear silence” on American Dreams. He’s also a member of The Armed, and has a dizzying array of collaborative projects on every single burner. We get into the wild backstory of Doraemon, the power of a wordless chorus, teenage screamo dreams, the levels of K-Dot, and our hopes of a new Joanna Newsom album in 2024.

I’ve often wondered, while listening to any number of Carlos Niño’s projects or records, what a typical day of his looks like. I used that as a jumping off point to talk to him about collaboration and working as a producer, particularly his involvement with Thandi Ntuli’s beautiful new record, Rainbow Revisited. He shared stories about what drew him to her sound, touring Europe with Laraaji, and the community that makes his work hum. Carlos’s latest record, (I’m just) Chillin’, on Fire is out now on International Anthem.

Zekarias Musele Thompson made one of my favorite records of 2022, Goodnight Shiva (Atlantic Rhythms), but that only scratched the surface of the work they are doing in the worlds of art and sound. Through Working Name Studioes, Thompson fosters a community built around connecting with each other and ourselves through material and conceptual art practice. It’s important work that continues to grow and evolve through events, releases, gatherings, and more. They also continue working on their own solo work, with a new album on the distant horizon.

When I first heard Green-House and read the description of Olive Ardizoni’s project back in early 2020 with Six Songs for Invisible Gardens, I felt an instant connection to the music and the ideas it conveyed. Since then, they have harvested growing sonic landscapes that, while adjacent to those early ideas, expand upon them to build a deeper conceptual framework. Green-House is now a duo with Ardizoni and Michael Flanagan, and on their new album, A Host for All Kinds of Life, the sharpest aural fields emerge. Ardizoni and Flanagan create inviting soundscapes that may have a gentle surface sheen, but inside are infinite folds, exploring the radical nature of joy and pleasure in an ever-darkening world. I was thrilled to talk to Ardizoni about these ideas and the gilded edges this music carves.

Collaborators include Susan Alcorn, Chas Smith, Nels Cline, Alkis Nicholadis, and so many more. It's a sprawing, magnificent document. When I heard Greta Ruth's The Fawn a couple years ago, I was initially taken by her voice and the way it hung like a ghost within the stark sonic field. It was so captivating. In the years since, her sound has developed and grown, but her voice continues to be the flame that holds it all together. Holy Omen, self-released earlier this month, pushes everything into a new realm. Her words are sharper than ever and musically, the songs are more complex, but just as inviting and timeless. It's really quite something, and I am thrilled to share this conversation we had about it last month.

For the newest edition of The Seltzer Salon, I talked to trumpeter, composer, and so much more, Matthew Halsall, about his new album, An Ever Changing View. It's a stunning album. I've been an admirer of Halsall's work for a while, but this album really swept me up in this lively, vivid world he creates with it. His compositions and trumpet playing are, of course, top notch, but the percussive elements of the album heighten its impact considerably. Add in the full package - custom fonts, cover tapestry, etc - it's an incredible listening experience. It was great to chat about it and hear him discuss those elements and how it came together to produce something so special.

I interviewed Nick Millevoi just over a year ago, but when his new album, Digital Reaction, came out, a lot of new questions started popping into my head. Then, he shared the video for "Spins of the Axis" and mentioned it's inspiration from the movie RAD, a favorite of mine as a kid that I a) hadn't thought about it years (decades!?) and b) thought nobody else had seen (I had no idea it was re-released in 2020), and so I knew I needed to do a Seltzer Salon with him. Nick is one of the best guitarists on the planet, but it's the way he uses his skill and technique to explore unexpected zones and, perhaps most notably, have some damn fun always grabs me. This was the first time the two of us actually sat down and talked, but having occupied similar and adjacent worlds for the better part of two decades, it was a quick connection. On this episode of The Seltzer Salon I'm joined by Canadian composer, musician, and dramaturge, Christopher Willes. He recently spearheaded the Resonance Gathering project which has evolved over its lifespan, but began as a large-scale ensemble performance of Pauline Oliveros's To Valerie Solanas and Marilyn Monroe in Recognition of Their Desperation (1970). It grew to become more than that, culminating in a double LP and book release that includes the performance (which happened in the Council Chambers at Toronto City Hall), a sound poetry piece from Oliveros's partner, IONE, and a book documenting the work. It's a stunning document of an incredible piece of work. Willes goes into detail about the origins of the idea, how it came to be, and all the various setbacks they had to overcome to make it a reality. A fascinating conversation about one of 2023's most memorable releases. I've been pretty floored by a lot of the music coming out of Beirut over the last few years - and I realize I'm a bit late to the party here - but the city's scene has produced a handful of my absolute favorite albums in recent memory. One thing many of those records have in common is Fadi Tabbal and Tunefork Studios. I've been in touch with Tabbal for the last few years, and have written about a fair bit of work he's involved in, but it felt long overdue to have a conversation about his work and all that's happening around him. His recent album with Charbel Haber, Enfin La Nuit, was a perfect opportunity. Next up in The Seltzer Salon is the wonderful Eve Maret. Her new album, New Noise, is such a fantastic surprise (wrote a little more about it in last week's Capsule Garden). I love when an artist goes into a new(ish) direction, especially when they take elements of their work and reconfigure them into something different. This album definitely feels like she's taking a risk in doing something outside her comfort zone and the results are great. It was wonderful to talk to her all about it. Hope you'll check out the record!

Straight up, I love Nina Dante and her project, The Snake Said to the River. It has brought me so much joy over the last year or so, and continues to just thrill and excite me. In it, Dante digs into music and writing from Medieval era, traditional folk music, plus her own original pieces. There’s also exploration of the natural world and the histories (and mysteries) of language. It's whimsical and wonderful in every way (kind of like Nina!). Sometimes an interview or an artist doesn't really need an introduction. Zeena Parkins is one of those artists. For decades, she has been exploring new aural terrain and creating her own unique frameworks for composition and improvisation. The scope of her work is vast, and its impact deeply felt. Last month, Chaikin Records released a boxed set of her incredible LACE project. Using something so familiar, Parkins recontextualized this fabric as a graphic score, creating a sonic code where pre-conceived ideas get turned on their head and possibilities emerge in endless threads. “LACE” is available now from Chaikin Records. https://zeenaparkinsprojects.bandcamp.com/album/lace The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. M. Sage is one of the most generous and thoughtful artists. His new album, “Paradise Crick,” finds joy in sonic reverie, and getting lost in that world makes things feel a little brighter. This conversation about the album felt so good. After a rough morning, talking to Sage about whimsy, pleasure, and so much more, I felt so much better and refreshed. He and his work have that kind of effect on people. “Paradise Crick” is out now on RVNG Intl. https://msage.bandcamp.com/album/paradise-crick https://foxydigitalis.zone/2023/06/09/foxy-digitalis-daily-6-9-23-m-sage/ The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. I've been a great admirer of Ned Milligan's work both up close and from afar. His latest, Considerable, is the perfect opportunity to finally have a conversation about his approach to creating these inviting, organic sound worlds. His use of wind chimes, especially, always grabs me on such a core level. Considerable is an apt title for this latest album as Milligan's work is always considered and restrained, creating just the right amount of resonance and sonic space to live within. Considerable is out now on vinyl, CD, and digital formats via laaps. https://laaps-records.com/album/considerable https://florabellerecords.com/ The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. I don't have enough superlatives for Danny Paul Grody, but he is such a kind and generous person that even a short conversation with him will leave you feeling better about the world. His latest album, Arc of Day, captures that spirit. It plots a sonic pathway through darkness and isolation to the other side, where light still glows. Brad and Danny talk in-depth about the album and its origins, the incredible collaborators who helped bring it to life, and a little Furniture Music for good measure. Arc or Day is out now on Three Lobed. https://threelobed.bandcamp.com/album/arc-of-day https://dannypaulgrody.bandcamp.com/album/furniture-music-ii The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. As much as Ben Vida’s previous work has caught and held my attention, his new album with Nina Dante and Yarn/Wire, “The Beat My Head Hit,” has hit me like something else entirely. It’s a phenomenal expression of a musical space Vida has been exploring for the last few years that lands in multiple ways. There are visceral reactions that lead to emotional swings from joy to wistfulness with many stops in between. I can’t stop listening to it. Ben and Brad chat about collecting language, the human voice as a synthesizer, how the new album started, and where this piece of music is going in the future. “The Beat My Head Hit” is out now on Shelter Press. https://benvida.bandcamp.com/album/the-beat-my-head-hit https://www.yarnwire.org/ https://www.ninadante.com/ https://www.instagram.com/thesnakesaidtotheriver/ The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. I am thrilled to share the first episode of The Seltzer Salon, a new series under the Foxy Digitalis banner that focuses on small conversations with a range of musicians, artists, writers, and whoever about various projects and ideas. I have long enjoyed listening to interviews, but I do not have the time to sit uninterrupted for an hour or more and really dig into many of these types of episodes. Granted, it’s easy to break them into multiple sessions, but I like the idea of more focused conversations about one (or two) projects - concise and convenient, hopefully, interesting for all. With that, this conversation with Joe Posset about his new blog, All My Ideas Are Stolen, exploring the original 76 tapes on Union Pole, is the perfect starting point. I can trace the beginning of my interest in ‘outsider’ music in a direct line to the Union Pole label. When Joe mentioned this project to me earlier in the year, I was thrilled and knew we had to talk about it at some point. Well, here we are.
