"The Mummies" is also the name of a garage punk band that originated in San Bruno, California, in the late 1980s. The band is known for their raw and lo-fi sound, as well as their distinctive stage presence which often involved wearing mummy costumes during performances. The Mummies gained a cult following within the underground punk and garage rock scene. Their music is characterized by its primitive and energetic style, drawing inspiration from 1960s garage rock and punk music. Despite their relatively short-lived career and limited mainstream recognition, The Mummies left a lasting impact on the DIY punk scene and are considered influential within their niche. The band members often used pseudonyms and maintained an aura of mystery around their identities. Some of their well-known releases include albums like "Never Been Caught" and "Death By Unga Bunga!!" as well as various singles and compilation appearances. "Budget Rock" refers to a music genre, scene, and DIY (do-it-yourself) approach to making and promoting music. It emerged in the 1980s and is closely associated with garage rock, punk rock, and a lo-fi aesthetic. Budget Rock emphasizes a raw, unpolished sound and often involves bands producing their own music with minimal financial resources. The term "Budget Rock" reflects the idea that the music can be created and enjoyed without the need for large budgets or major record label support. Bands within the Budget Rock scene often prioritize creativity, authenticity, and a rebellious spirit over commercial success or polished production values. Characteristics of Budget Rock include: Lo-Fi Sound: Budget Rock bands intentionally embrace a low-fidelity sound, which can include recording on inexpensive equipment, using vintage gear, and deliberately avoiding overproduced sound. DIY Ethos: Bands within the Budget Rock scene often handle many aspects of their music themselves, from recording and producing to booking their own shows and creating their own artwork. Garage and Punk Influences: The music draws heavily from garage rock and punk rock, featuring energetic and often primitive musical styles. Minimalist Approach: Musicians within this scene focus on the essentials of music-making, emphasizing the songwriting and performance rather than complex arrangements. Independent Labels: Budget Rock bands often release their music on small independent labels that align with the DIY ethos. Underground Culture: The scene operates within underground and alternative music circles, catering to fans who appreciate the authenticity and unique character of the music. Budget Rock has contributed to the diversity of the music landscape by providing an alternative to mainstream, highly polished music production.
