Jerry Garcia's unique "Alligator Strat" holds legend status in Grateful Dead lore - and is arguably one of the first heavily modded Strat's to grace the stage of a high profile band.
Ace Nashville guitar tech, Chad Winn, joins us to go deep on the history of this guitar from it's hybrid vintage heritage through to the extensive mods Garcia and the Dead techs performed on it. Chad also discusses his own Alligator inspired guitars and the guitar community forming around "Jerry-tone".
Chad, who has worked for Gibson and Novo Guitars, first appeared on the Guitar Speak Podcast on episode #206 to talk about the polarising Gibson Firebird X - a guitar he worked on in the Gibson factory.

Adam Miller is back with a fantastic new record and we hear all about it on the Guitar Speak Podcast!
In Adam's words "Beyond Reason is a Guitarist / Songwriter album, if there was such a genre! I began to take note, that most of my guitar playing time was spent writing and creating, rather than practising. This led to me writing multiple albums worth of material the past few years whilst off the road for a while.”
The 8 song album contains elements of blues, jazz, funk, rock, folk, and country and features Miller on electric, archtop, acoustic, resonator, and nylon string guitar. The bass & drums were recorded in Los Angeles by Miller’s now long time collaborators, drummer / engineer / producer Justin Glasco, and bass player Joel Gottschalk. Miller then worked up the tracks through 2022 in his home of Newcastle Australia, between his return to performing and touring dates.

Ian S. Port joins us to discuss his fascinating book "The Birth of Loud" in depth. It is a brilliant read that follows the arms race to electrify the solid body electric guitar - a race spearheaded by Les Paul and Leo Fender.
“A hot-rod joy ride through mid-20th-century American history. With appropriately flashy prose, [Port] dismantles some misconceptions and credits some nearly forgotten but key figures. He also summons, exuberantly and perceptively, the look, sound, and sometimes smell of pivotal scenes and songs. The Birth of Loud rightfully celebrates an earlier time, when wood, steel, copper wire, microphones and loudspeakers could redefine reality. Tracing material choices that echoed through generations, the book captures the quirks of human inventiveness and the power of sound.”
John Pareles, New York Times Book Review.

Happy Birthday to Mr Michael Schenker! We celebrate by replaying our conversation with the German shred master. Happy Birthday MS and KEEP ON ROCKIN'!
Michael Schenker is one of the most influential rock guitarists on the planet with players such as John Petrucci, Kirk Hammett and Randy Rhoades citing the German born guitarist as an inspiration.
Schenker rose to fame through his fiery playing in The Scorpions and UFO in the '70s and '80s. And whilst a host of offers from artists such as Aerosmith and Ozzy Ozbourne were extended, Schenker has always been happiest following his own muse.
Schenker joins us to reflect on 50 years of high octane rock and a new album, Immortal, that celebrates this milestone.
We also discuss his approach to guitar tracking, working with Jim Marshall on an unfinished project which Schenker believes led to the JCM800 series, the history of the legendary 'cocked-wah' tone and more.

Ian S. Port joins us to discuss his fascinating book "The Birth of Loud" in depth. It is a brilliant read following the arms race to electrify the solid body electric guitar - a race spearheaded by Les Paul and Leo Fender.

Today we are joined by Australian guitarist Nathan Cavaleri, a musician who is as resilient as he is soulful.
Nathan Cavaleri started playing guitar at age three, picking along with his father's blues records. Facing luekemia at six, Cavaleri found solace in his guitar and thanks to the Starlight Foundation met and jammed with Mark Knopfler on national television. Even at such a tender age, and quite unwell, Cavaleri's affinity with the blues and burgeoning talent was undeniable.
Thankfully, Cavaleri was given a clear bill of health at age thirteen. By this time he was a road veteran, having shared the stage with artists such as BB King, Robben Ford, Albert Collins, Steve Morse, Steve Cropper, Jimmy Barnes, Diesel and Tommy Emmanuel to name a few.
Following a break from the spotlight in his late teens, Cavaleri returned with force fronting the blues/rock band Nat Cole and the Kings.
In 2014 Cavaleri found himself unexpectedly struck down with adrenal fatigue and anxiety. In 2017 Cavaleri started a website & blog that detailed his return to the stage and studio.
Cavaleri speaks candidly about his journey and reflects back on 2018 as a "year of action", in which two compelling singles from the forthcoming Demons EP were released, in addition to a string of successful live shows.
This episode is a replay from our conversation with Nathan from 2019.

Shaun Verreault fuses rock, blues and folk influences into his own unique voice. The Canadian guitarist has held down the frontman role in Wide Mouth Mason for over 25 years writing, singing, playing and touring gold records and major label deals.
Shaun tells of lessons learnt from sharing stages with AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and ZZ Top. He details the development of his mind boggling - yet innately musical - tri slide approach that involves three slides on his fretting hand. Shaun also tells us the story of the NAMM jam with Robert Randolph that has led to an ongoing camaraderie.
Shaun is one those guitarists who is constantly pushing the envelope of his creativity and as such is a super inspiring guest on the podcast!

Schenker rose to fame through his fiery playing in The Scorpions and UFO in the '70s and '80s. And whilst a host of offers from artists such as Aerosmith and Ozzy Ozbourne were extended, Schenker has always been happiest following his own muse.

The Fender Telecaster celebrates its 70th birthday this year.
In 1950 Fender's Broadcaster - quickly renamed the Telecaster after a legal complaint from Gretsch - became the first commercially available solid body electric guitar after a tense arms race with Les Paul and other competitors. Music and popular culture was forever changed.
Today we are joined by three diverse Tele wranglers to discuss this iconic instrument - its strengths, quirks, longevity and legacy.
Dr Zane Banks is a Sydney based guitarist who blazes on his '50s reissue Tele in The Banks Brothers. The excerpts heard in this excerpt are Zane playing hot-rodded rockabilly in Cruisin' Deuces.
Shane Diiorio is a killer guitarist and hosts the hugely popular YouTube channel, In The Blues. As a gear reviewer he has intimately played a legion of guitars, but his go-to axe is always a Tele.
Brian Wampler creates the world class Wampler Pedals seen on pedalboards around the globe. He is not only a huge Tele fan and player - Brian has worked two of the world's most beloved Tele players in Brad Paisley and Brent Mason to create their signature Wampler pedals.

Kat Ayala joins us to talk about her diverse and flourishing career. Kat tells us about melding big rock tones and intricate ambience in Forces & Fury - her rad project with Astrid Holtz - gigs with Vanessa Amorosi, Hayley Mary, Royale with Cheese and many more touring acts.
Kat has great stories about landing high profile gigs, how Diesel introduced her to Yamaha, in turn leading to a Vox artist endorsement and opening for Daryl Braithwaite in her pop-punk band - and what that led to.
She is a gear nut - embracing both modellers and stompboxes, bending signal flow to her will and playing guitars that span the gamut from classic design to cutting edge modernity.
Above all this, Kat is a humble community builder and its no surprise she is in such demand as a musician.

Jy completed a Masters in Tuba performance - also at the Sydney Con - before throwing himself into pedal steel. He is now highly in demand working with Charlie Collins, Kasey Chambers, Julian Day and many others. Jy is also a Fender artist.

Joseph Tabua’s sound world embodies large slabs of colours that juxtapose indie rock influences with aleotoric and minimalist finesse. Joseph’s Fijian and Australian heritage are intertwined profoundly thus creating an electrifying and distinct compositional voice.
We discuss Joseph's guitar approach from rock jams with an embryonic Silverchair to the 'spontaneous and visceral' improvisation of the Tabua-Harrison duo (championed by Living Colour's Vernon Reid no less) and the wide-screen composition of the solo release 'Half Ocean Half Sky'.
The conversation also looks at Joseph's academic work - he is currently completing a doctorate at Western Sydney University, gear choices for sonic exploration and a fantastic list of boundary stretching guitar players and musicians to check out.
This is a great interview with an intelligent, humble and thoughtful musician.

After a fascinating appearance on our Stratocaster 65th Anniversary Special, author Ian S. Port returns to discuss his book "The Birth of Loud" in depth. It is a brilliant read!

Gretchen Menn, Jennifer Batten and Nili Brosh join us to talk about joining forces for what will be an amazing run of shows. We also cover upcoming solo work, the benefits of study, the changing landscape for female guitarists, current gear choices and much more.
This was a super fun conversation with three incredible musicians.
And Elvis the dog.
Jennifer Batten has not only performed with megastars such as Michael Jackson and Jeff Beck, she was also a ground-breaking advocate, virtuoso, and teacher of two-handed tapping as a guitar technique. Batten’s ongoing commitment to innovation drove her recent creation of a solo multimedia show that deploys her own video productions to augment and expand her musical compositions. Her latest release is BattleZone by Scherer/Batten.
As a member of America’s popular, all-female Led Zeppelin powerhouse, Zepparella, Gretchen Menn is one of the foremost disciples of the Jimmy Page guitar style. But Menn is also an adventurous composer who has integrated Gypsy jazz, prog, metal, and classical into her own music and guitar playing. In fact, she resolutely studied orchestration for five years before completing her 2016 solo album, Abandon All Hope—a triumphant musical adaptation of Dante’s Inferno.
Nili Brosh was a member of Tony MacAlpine’s band, opened for Yngwie Malmsteen during his 2013 USA tour, and was the lead guitarist in Cirque du Soleil’s production of Michael Jackson ONE. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Berklee College of Music—who went on to become one of the school’s youngest faculty members—Brosh’s most recent album is 2014’s A Matter of Perception, with a new record slated for release in December 2019.

Rick Kelly has been hand crafting guitars for over 50 years in his hometown of New York for artists including Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Charlie Sexton, Kirk Douglas and Bill Frisell to name a few.
Rick's work - which includes the use of reclaimed timbers from historic NY locations - is the subject of a beautifully made feature film, Carmine Street Guitars, directed by Ron Mann.
The film includes a star studded line-up of guitarists, but is as much a tale of Rick and his apprentice Cindy Hulej's time honoured craft in an increasingly gentrified neighbourhood.

We continue our conversations with some of the world class musicians featuring at the 2017 Sydney Guitar Festival.
Van Larkins' childhood obsession for sonic manipulation of kitchen utensils fortunately led him to the guitar. Van has become a highly respected proponent of contemporary acoustic playing - signed to the iconic Candyrat Records label - and has built a career through his polyphonic approach. Van is one of the artists featured in the 'Acoustic Uprising' documentary and will be playing a set at the Sydney premier of the film.
Fiona Boyes is an Australian blues icon. She has a recording career of over 25 years and regularly tours Australia, the United States and Europe. Fiona came to guitar via a deep love and knowledge of the history and regional influences of the blues. She talks us through her development from acoustic country blues into electric Chicago styles and more, meeting Hubert Sumlin, breaking down doors in the States and her arsenal of instruments. Oh, yeah...Fiona recorded her latest album at Skywalker Ranch in California!
Adam Miller saw the instrumental possibilities of the guitar after hearing Tommy Emmanual on cassette. Before long he was opening shows for Emmanual. Adam is equally adept at contrapuntal solo acoustic and atmospheric electric jazz. He is constantly touring the globe - we had to call him in Japan - and has garnered considerable critical acclaim through his genre busting approach.
The inaugural Sydney Guitar Festival is almost upon us with a brilliant lineup of local and international guitarists.
In the first of two episodes catching up with some of the festival guests we speak to progressive rock wizard, James Norbert Ivanyi, Australian rock royalty - Sarah McLeod of the Superjesus and get all the deets from festival programmer Adrian Leighton.
James Norbert Ivanyi has just returned home after after a triumphant European tour promoting his latest EP, Denalavis. James talks through his formative influences, his recording journey, playing epic prog festivals and more.
Self imposed exile in New York provided the perfect writing environment for Sarah McLeod's latest solo album, Rocky's Diner. Sarah talks us through writing elaborate demos, recording the album and and simultaneously taking on bass and guitar duties for the subsequent tour in a hard hitting duo with Mick Skelton.
