Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. In this edition of the Saturday Stat, Lou returns to Greg's wheelhouse: putting. Here, Greg and Mark take their best guesses at how often a scratch and a 20-index golfer 3-putt from 16–20'. Turns out, the answers surprise them—and likely you as well. Three-putt avoidance is a key to solid scoring (as Greg knows very well), and this episode will give you some keys to avoid wasting unnecessary strokes on the greens.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

Today's episode is all about lining up your putts. Mark, Lou, and Greg talk about using the line on the ball vs drawing lines, whether to use a line at all, how the line on your ball might interact with any alignment lines on your putter, and then, in a discussion for the ages (and one to be continued): an epic new ball marker, invented by Lou, that might be so revolutionary that it's banned by the governing bodies. Lots of good content in this podcast that should help you hole more putts in your next round.

Today's episode is the second part of Mark's interview in Sean Foley. Here, Mark asks Sean what Sean regards as his greatest accomplishment in coaching. The discussion turns philosophical, as Sean reflects on what he really values most in coaching, what he's learned over the years, and what he appreciated most when (as a surprise gift) his wife compiled thank you videos from all his students over his coaching career.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. In this edition of the Saturday Stat, a golfer is sitting in the fairway, 175 yards from the hole. How likely is he to make double or worse if he's a scratch golfer? What if he's a 15-index? Mark and Greg register their guesses, and the actual number surprises them quite a bit. The takeaway: a lot of us have a lot to learn about making smart decisions on the course.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Golf's statistical revolution has made it clear: distance matters. And because distance matters, speed matters. But what happens when you bring the speed, but miss the center of the driver face? In this episode, Lou asks Greg and Mark about the drop-off in distance for off-center driver strikes. You'll see why strike matters a ton, and that if you're going to miss center, there's a side of your driver face you really want to avoid if you want to hit your best shots.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

Mark, Lou, and Greg continue to take measured data from Tour (and, in this case, also amateur) swings and see what it tells us for making real improvement in our games. In this episode, Mark pulls up data on the distance between the golfer's center of mass and the edge of his hand, both at address and at the top of the backswing. Because these can both move (and they move quite differently between pros and amateurs), the distance answer might be surprising (it was to Lou and Greg!). From this, though, they suggest ideas that could make your swing—and your scoring—better.

Recently, Mark had a lesson with Sean Foley, famed for his work with a number of elite Tour pros. In this episode, he recaps that lesson with Greg and Lou, talking about Sean's approach to coaching, the way he integrates technology and a concern for the whole body, how Mark approaches making swing changes for his own game, and (maybe) what Mark might have learned to be a better coach to Lou.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Today's episode will make you think. Take a 10-index golfer: what will he score in rounds where he hits 13 fairways? What about in rounds in which he hits 9 greens in regulation? Lou puts this question to Lou and Greg, and after settling the winner, the discussion turns to how this knowledge can help you shoot your best scores.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

In this episode, the guys continue to see what they can learn about the golf swing using motion tracking analysis. Here, Mark asks Greg and Lou how much the hip should turn in the swing (using Tour players as a benchmark) and compares that number to his own measurement. A key idea in this episode: because our bodies are connected and our swing is one big motion, changing one element of how your body moves will almost always change a number of other features of the way you deliver in the club. Experimenting with different intentions and feels—or better, being guided by a coach—can allow you to fix multiple issues with a single change.

New technology keeps making information that was once exclusive to expensive equipment available to the avid regular golfer. In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg look at information about Lou's swing captured by Sportsbox AI, which takes video of a golf swing and translates it to measured data comparable to motion capture technology. The data: how high do Lou's hands get from their starting point at address? And more importantly: why does it matter and how can it help your swing?

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Modern golf instruction emphasizes distance; the old "drive for show" slogan has been thoroughly debunked. But does that translate to recreational golfers, or is that just for Tour players? In this episode, Lou quizzes Mark and Greg about the effects that gaining 10 yards of driving distance has on Arccos golfers. How many of them improved? What percent of them improved by 3 shots/round or more? And what percentage of them saw a regression in their game after gaining distance? The answers are relevant for how you go about improving in your own game.

In today's episode, Mark again is analyzing motion capture data from elite players—this episode features Rory McIlroy. In this episode, Mark asks Greg and Lou about Rory's left knee movement at address through impact. A little spoiler: his knee does turn quite a bit toward target at impact: but the way that he gets there might not be what you think. And as Mark says, it traces back to a simple setup issue that most amateurs get wrong. There may well be information here that can directly help your golf swing.

We all love new golf gear. But in the hierarchy of sparkly new golf clubs, drivers are likely at the top, followed by iron sets and putters. What about your wedges? Could a new set of wedges make a real difference in your scoring? In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg talk about the performance changes of worn out wedges, and the ways in which—not just marketing, but tested results—a fresh set of grooves might help you shoot lower scores.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Is this the best Saturday Stat ever? Probably. Today, Lou asks Mark and Greg about the putting make rate from 8 feet. Many golf statheads know that this is the break even point for Tour pros: they make 50% of these. But what about scratch players? And what about 20 index golfers? The answers will likely surprise you, as they did one of our hosts! But the numbers here are so helpful for having the right expectations on the course.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

Today, Mark quizzes Lou and Greg (who, as always, loves making random guesses) about Koepka's hip turn in his swing. In the discussion that follows, the guys talk about the massive effects that hip turn can have on your swing—including things that Greg himself is working on in his pursuit of continued good results on the Champions Tour.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. We know that the traditional putts per round stat is very dependent on approach play: in general, the better your approach play, the more putts you are likely to have. But what about Strokes Gained:Putting? In this episode, Lou asks Greg and Mark what happens to a 10-index golfer's SG:Putting number on good approach rounds vs poor approach rounds, and then they have a lengthy conversation about what might cause the disparity.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

In today's episode, Mark again is analyzing motion capture data from elite players—this time, Jon Rahm. Jon is famous for having a relatively "short" backswing, even with driver. The question today for Lou and Greg: how much does Rahm turn his upper body? And as always, the discussion turns from Rahm's swing to how we can learn how to improve our own golf through a better understanding of body movements—and the swing characteristics that they tend to produce.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. The topic today: megaduffs. How often do you hit your approach shot and come up short 30% or more of your distance to the target? In today's episode, Lou, Mark, and Greg talk about that number for both scratch and 20-index golfers, and the answer might surprise you. The biggest takeaway: all of us need to get better at striking the ball.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

In today's episode, Mark compares motion capture data from two elite players—this time, Jon Rahm and Rickie Fowler. The point of comparison: how much do they move their center away from or toward the target at different points in the swing. Lou and Greg make their best guesses, but then the discussion turns to how "sway" in the swing affects other swing characteristics, and how that might be relevant to your game and helping you improve.

You want to get better at golf, so you start tracking some stats in your game in addition to score alone. Are those stats going to give you useful information that you can use to shape your practice plan? In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg talk about traditional golf stats like putts per round or fairways per round, and the ways that those numbers might even mislead a golfer to practice things that she might already be very proficient at.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. The course rating system for handicap purposes is a mystery to many golfers, even some avid ones. What happens to the scoring of a scratch golfer when he plays a course that, by rating, is relatively versus a round on a course with a much higher rating? In this episode, Lou poses that question to Mark and Greg, and then they talk about handicaps, how courses are rated, and how the courses and tees you play might affect your index.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

This past week, Miles Russell played in a PGA Tour event at age 15. Although he didn't make the cut, he did shoot even par for two rounds and beat dozens of established professionals. Earlier this season, Nick Dunlap won a PGA Tour event as a amateur, the first time that had happened in over two decades. In this episode of the podcast, Mark, Lou, and Greg talk about the rising tide of incredibly talented, incredibly young golfers. They discuss what's causing it, what its effects might be, and what Greg wishes he would have done earlier in his golf career.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Greenside bunkers—higher handicappers often dread them, while better players sometimes favor them over being next to the green in the rough. What do the stats say? How much is of a penalty is a bunker over the rough for a scratch player? And for a 20-index? The answers might surprise you, as they certainly surprised Mark and Greg in this episode. Find out where the stats say your game can improve!

Today's episode, Mark again pulls up motion capture data from elite players—this time, Sergio Garcia and Billy Horschel. Sergio is famous for his lag: that deep angle he gets between his lead forearm and the club shaft as he transitions into the downswing. In this episode, Mark asks Lou and Greg to compare that angle between Sergio and Horschel (for the relevant images, check the podcast X account below). Once again: measured data sometimes tells a very different story than single images.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Sometimes the stats confirm long-held suspicions. Sometimes they overturn them. In today's episode, Lou asks us to consider two 5-index golfers. One of them is in his 20s; the other in his 60s. Which of them, on average, has the better short game? And by how much? Greg and Mark register their guesses, and then the three of them talk about how differing golfers of all ages can make improvements to their games to give them an edge on their peers.

It's one of the basics of golf etiquette: repair your pitch marks. And yet, almost universally, golfers complain that the other guys don't do it. In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg tackle the topic of pitch marks. They float some theories as to why there are so many unrepaired craters in the greens and why the normal campaigns to get more people fixing their ball marks don't seem to be working. There might be more to this than you expected.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. In today's episode, the shot under consideration is the obvious green light: the chance to get up and down from about 100 yards away. How often does a scratch player actually accomplish that? What about a 15-handicap? In this episode, Lou brings the numbers for Mark and Greg, and then the guys talk about the proper expectations for this shot—including something too far from many amateurs' minds: avoiding the big number.

How much golf have you been watching? In this episode, Greg brings the numbers (Lou is impressed) on this season's steep decline in TV viewership of the Tour. Mark, Lou, and Greg talk about the factors that might be contributing to this downturn, including the play, the product, and the switch to streaming instead of TV. They also discuss the link—if there is any—between golf viewership on TV and golf participation at your local course.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. In this week's stat, an ordinary golfer is 20 yards from the hole with a reasonable amount of green to work with. Should he use his LW or PW? Lou quizzes Mark and Greg on this question, and the three of them have a great discussion that might well help you make choices on the course that will save you fractional strokes—fractional strokes that become full strokes off your score by the end of the round.

A slump. A setback. A downturn in form. A funk. A run of bad play. Whatever you want to call it, anyone who plays golf for any length of time will have a period in which their standard of play isn't meeting the standard that they've already established. How do you turn things around? In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg give their advice for shaking off a period of bad golf and getting back to having fun on the course (and it might mean that having fun is how you break the slump).

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. This week's stat is simple: greens in regulation, the "traditional" stat that has the greatest correlation with handicap and scoring. In this episode, Lou asks Mark and Greg to guess the average GIRs of a scratch golfer and of a 15-index player. After, they give advice to help with your approaches to the green—and your approach to golf.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

With Lou out for this episode, Mark and Greg sit down to talk ground forces. Perhaps you caught Mark's video about the lesson Greg had about ground forces (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eay0xd61fyY). In today's show, they talk about what it means to use the ground (hint: you are), how to use the ground well, and how wise use of technology can lead to big changes in your swing and improvements in ball flight—sometimes without thinking about how you're swinging at all.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. This week's episode takes us to a greenside bunker, where we're joined by a scratch golfer and a 15 index. How many shots, on average, will it take each of them to hole out? In our episode this week, Greg and Mark each take a crack at answering Lou's question, and then they talk about growing in bunker play skill and having reasonable expectations from the sand traps.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

In this episode of the Hack It Out Golf podcast, Mark, Lou, and Greg talk coaching—and when to consider changing coaches. With some big name Tour players either changing coaches or making headlines from seeing new coaches, it's a good time to consider the reasons that you might find benefit in a different instructor. Greg will talk about his own experience with coaching on a Tour level, Mark brings his experience with years of coaching, and Lou has had a handful of coaches (including Mark).

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Following up on last week's episode, this week we're sitting on the tee of a 500 yard par 5 with a scratch golfer and a 20 handicap. On average, how many shots will it take each of them to finish the hole? Lou poses this question to Mark and Greg, and after sorting through the answers, they consider how these averages should shape our expectations as we head to the course.
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

The advice to lay up to your favorite yardage simply refuses to go away, and people who really ought to know better continue to advocate for a strategy that is objectively unsound. In this episode, Mark and Lou (minus Greg, who was out owning the Champions Tour) attack this myth again. They also give important clarification: in rejecting "laying up to a preferred yardage," are they advocating attacking every green? (No.) This episode is an important refresher of the data-driven reasons to get the ball as close as you can to your target without taking on unnecessarily penalizing risk

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. 150 yards in the fairway is considered by many golfers to be a really ideal spot. Expectations are high; is a birdie in play? In this episode, Lou asks Greg and Mark what a scratch golfer and 15-index golfer should think of as being a good shot: one that, relatively to their handicap, loses no strokes. These answers are absolutely key for managing your own expectations on the course, giving yourself credit when you've hit a good shot.

In today's episode, we begin by refreshing the difference between average and median, and then the question is about median proximity to the hole for highly skilled and higher handicap golfers from 40 yards in the rough. Lou's numbers alongside Mark and Greg's guesses set the table for an important discussion for how best to shave off strokes in your short game.

Last week's Players Championship was a great event, ending with a dramatic, heartbreaking lip out. Historically, this tournament has tended to have one of the strongest—if not the strongest—fields in professional golf. Obviously, that was slightly less true this year, with yet another major competitor having decided to play on the LIV Tour. In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg discuss some of the history of the fields at the Players and what its current state is.

It's weird when we stop to think about it: almost none of us have to play golf. And yet very often, we allow aspects of our leisure activity to fill us with fear: terror about certains kinds of shots, pressure situations, or outcomes. In this episode, Lou, Mark, and Greg talk about their greatest golf fears and the steps they've taken to address them. Their advice here will help us all to enjoy our recreation a whole lot more.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. In this episode, Lou has chosen a stat that highlights the enormous importance of hitting greens. Suppose a scratch golfer is in the fairway, 125 from the pin. What's the expected difference in his scoring when he hits the green versus missing the green? Mark and Greg register their guesses, and then talk about ways to pursue a strategy on the course that maximizes greens hit.

When you're at the top of your backswing, where is your clubface pointing? And what does that mean for how the rest of your swing needs to work? In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg discuss not just clubface control, but clubface awareness: knowing and feeling what the clubface is doing all through the swing. They suggest drills that will help you develop the feel of the clubface—a major key to helping you become a better golfer.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Many of us have spent the winter months working on indoor putting mats. When we return to the course, it's a bit shocking to remember that real greens don't have alignment lines. Making 15 straight ten-footers no longer seems quite so easy. In today's episode, Lou serves up a classic—and helpful—dose of expectation management, as he asks Greg and Mark about the make and 3-putt percentages of a 10-index golfer from 18 feet.

What does changing your grip do for your golf game? Turns out, it isn't quite so simple as "stronger goes left." In this episode, Mark leads Lou and Greg in a discussion on how golfers hold the club. Do you release a re-grip the club during your swing? Are you sure? In what ways does grip interact with path? And did an episode of Project Lou break out in a non-Project Lou episode? Over the past couple of years, Mark Crossfield has gained serious distance. For a long time, it was a joke on Mark's YouTube reviews that, whatever driver, whatever ball, he always carried every tee shot 262 yards. Then he began to put real work into the science of how speed in generated in the swing. In this episode, he and Lou and Greg talk about what he's learned, to what degree he is limited by his current physical capabilities, and how all of this can translate to your own driving distance on the course.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Not all shots from 10-index players in the fairway from 150 yards are the same. At some courses, the greens are enormous. At others, the targets are tiny. How much difference is there for our 10-index golfer when he's attempting to hit these two greens? In this episode, Greg and Mark try to tackle that question from Lou, and then they offer some insights that will help you hit more greens in regulation.

For years, the consensus advice for golfers was to swing smoothly. We've all admired the superb players who seem to exert no effort at all. But in more recent years, we've learned the value of distance, and increasingly we've seen swings (even at the highest levels of golf) in which golfers swing so hard that they finish off-balance, recoiling the club back around. So what are we supposed to be doing? In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg give their advice for how hard we should be swinging if we want to shoot our best scores.

The PGA Tour continues to rebuild its membership structure on the fly, changing up who qualifies for a card and what events different players can get in. In this season, that has created a crunch for those who earned their cards through Q School, many of whom are struggling to get any starts on Tour so far. In this episode, Greg and Mark and Lou talk about these changes, what they mean for players on Tour, and how the Tour is challenged to both reward its stars while providing avenues for up and coming players to gain status.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. There are fewer attributes more requested by amateur golfers than consistency. What does that mean? In this episode, Lou quizzes Mark and Greg about the range of scores typical of a 10–15 index golfer, along with their "outlier" rounds, in which they score 5 shots better or worse than average. In addition to useful facts that help you have better expectations about your own game, you'll likely feel better about your understanding of how averages work after listening to this podcast.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. When comparing golfers of different skill levels, the Saturday Morning Stat often asks about their differing performance from the same yardage. But in general, golfers with lower handicaps also hit the ball further which each club than higher handicap golfers, and physics dictates that it is easier to hit a PW straighter than a 7i. So in this episode, Lou asks Greg and Mark to guess the percent of greens hit by scratch and 15-index golfers from the fairway with their pitching wedges. Will the numbers even out, or will the lower-index player still outperform the high-handicapper?
Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap.

During the PGA Show, Greg took the opportunity to have a lesson with Dr. Scott Lynn using the Catalyst Force Plates. Mark was there for the lesson as well. In this episode, they review what Greg learned about how he uses pressure in the golf swing, and speculate how the lesson would have gone if Lou had been on the plates. For all of us, learning how we interact with the ground can help us make better, more efficient swings and play better golf.

Incorporating both data and Greg's experience on Tour, you'll want to hear what they say—and whether considering AimPoint might help your putting get better, and maybe even faster.

Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. If a scratch player and a 10-index are both hitting PW from the fairway, how often are they hitting the green? Is the scratch player hitting it more often, or because he's (generally) hitting PW from a greater distance, is it about equal? In this episode, Lou poses this question to Mark and Greg, and then they discuss some of the ways these numbers can help you play better golf.

The image of the complete golfer—the one who has all the shots—is that he's regularly carving balls in either direction to find the "optimal" approach to his target. But is this an ideal that most golfers should pursue? Is there an advantage to practicing this kind of creative golf? Putting from off the green—the Texas wedge—is polarizing. In some parts of the world, it's completely normal. For some golfers, it smacks of desperation: a shot that indicates that a golfer lacks the skill to use a more lofted club. In today's episode, Lou begins with some data that indicates that way more of us should be using the putter from off the green, and then he and Mark and Lou give advice for practicing and using a shot that could save many of us a lot of strokes.

Today on the Hack it Out Golf podcast we discuss Aimpoint putting. There are so many players on the PGA Tour that use Aimpoint. It's popularity has exploded. Keegan Bradley, Max Homa, Adam Scott and Justin Thomas are just a few of the PGA Tour players that are using this approach.
But should they be allowed to use it? Should golf consider banning Aimpoint? Is it how golf was intended to be played? Should the PGA Tour institute its own ban if the governing bodies of golf do not make the change?

It today's Hack it Out Golf podcast we are discussing some of the things you need to be thinking about when faced with challenging weather conditions on the golf course.
Playing golf in adverse weather conditions can be a challenging yet rewarding experience for golfers seeking to improve their skills on the golf course. To enhance their performance during unfavorable weather, golfers must adapt their approach and maintain composure throughout their golf swings.
Firstly, it's crucial to make club selections that suit the weather conditions and the specific challenges of the golf course. By adjusting their golf swing strategies and golf club choices to the weather conditions and golf course demands, golfers can navigate the challenging elements more effectively.
Secondly, maintaining mental resilience and composure is paramount when attempting to play better golf in inclement weather conditions on the golf course. The mental aspect of golf plays a significant role, especially when facing adverse weather. To perform well, golfers should stay patient and accept that unfavorable weather is an inherent part of the game of golf. By visualizing successful golf swings and remaining focused on executing the fundamental techniques, golfers can tackle the challenges presented by inclement weather with confidence. Embracing a positive mindset allows golfers to view challenging weather conditions as opportunities for improvement and growth on the golf course.
Moreover, adopting a more conservative approach in response to the weather, such as aiming for the center of the green rather than risky pin placements, can lead to more successful golf swings and better outcomes during the round. Remembering that all golfers are affected by adverse weather, maintaining a strong mental game can provide a competitive advantage and contribute to playing better golf in challenging weather conditions on the golf course.
