In episode 171 of Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with the original guitarist and leader of the band Firefall, Jock Bartley. In their conversation Jock discusses briefly what living in Colorado is like both now and early on… and why he never made the move to LA. Jock tells us about the two most recent Firefall releases both concept albums focusing on the songs of Firefall’s contemporary bands that the original members were at times members of. Jock talks about his early musical experiences studying with guitarist Johnny Smith in Colorado Springs on a Gibson ES-140 he bought from Johnny’s shop. Jock describes being hired by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris and touring with them. Jock tells us about his guitars: his 1958 Gibson sunburst Les Paul and his 1959 Fender Telecaster as well as a custom Paul Reed Smith that he plays through a Fender Super. Jock then explains the formation of Firefall which was a type of super group for the era and then after the heyday for the band how he kept the band alive to this point. He also shares with us a couple of Gibson Les Paul Reissues, a 1952 Goldtop and a 1959. Paul also discusses his amps. Paul talks about his friends in vintage instruments, producer Perry Margouleff (perrymargouleff.com) and amp builder Mitch Colby (ColbyAmps.com) who are working on the new Sundragon amps with Jimmy Page. Paul tells us about growing up in Downey California and starting on lap steel and eventually moving to guitar and played in the band “the Jades” with his Rickenbacker 6 string that he eventually gave to Elvis Costello. Paul talks about his other passions surfing and his family. Paul tells the story of his punk band “Mogan David and his Winos” which included Harold Bronson of Rhino Records fame. Paul explains how Paul Bloomfield helped him with his guitar playing. Paul then tells us about as a gift from the band Pink Floyd. He got to play with Pink Floyd on stage in London Arena. Elgin describes his first guitars a Harmony Rocket and his local music store Freedom Music in downtown San Diego where he bought a ‘58 sunburst Fender Music Master and then a Gibson SG jr and describes his amp a Fender Harvard tweed that his sister’s boyfriend left at the family’s home. Elgin also describes his current guitars that he uses with the Greyboy Allstars, a mid 60’s Gibson ES 175 that he got from a show guitarist in Las Vegas and an early 50’s Guild T 100. Elgin takes us through the rest of his guitars in his studio and some special amps including Carol Kaye’s bass amp he bought from her and an amp he got from Ry Cooder. Elgin (Michael Andrews) then tells us about his scoring work which began in earnest with the TV show Freaks and Geeks, and his work with Judd Apatow including “Bridesmaids” and quite a few documentaries including “20 Feet from Stardom”. In their conversation Reed tells us about the foundation how began as a museum and a foundation for bringing guitar into schools and how the focus changed to mostly the foundation teaching guitar in schools in eight states. Reed tells of the guitars they currently have on display: Joe Maphis’s guitar, one of Chuck Berry’s guitars and a guitar owned and played by Dolly Parton. Reed tells about the building the foundation owns which includes a performance space, a studio as well as the displayed guitars. Reed takes us through some of the foundations programs such as the Right To Rock program which team’s students with songwriters who teach the fundamentals of songwriting and then after writing a song the students get to hear their songs recorded by professional band. Reed shares the insights into the guitar collection which was up to 300 instruments and where the few guitars they’ve sold to build their endowment, were sold (Well Strung Guitars in New York City) Reed talks about the partnership with Gibson and Epiphone to provide guitars at a reduced price to the foundation to give to the students. They are also partnered with Ernie Ball and Guitar Center. Reed also explains how donated guitars are auctioned off or sold to provide the students guitars. The album tells the tale of a singing cowboy movie star who travels across dangerous lands in search of his lost love and a chance at redemption. Using a mix of contemporary and mid-1900s period-specific techniques and instruments during the recording process helped actualize true Western authenticity. A Silicon Valley kid, Stan grew up with musical parents and made money by fixing on amps at local music stores. Episode 68 of “Have Guitar Will Travel” features guitarist, collector, and entrepreneur Sammy Ash, who grew up in his grandparents store, Sam Ash Music. With host James Patrick Regan, he talks about family and its ongoing role in the company founded by his grandfather, who immigrated from Poland and started the store in 1924. A teen in the ’60s, he recalls the music he was hearing, and how The Beatles’ appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” impacted the store. Growing up near Pasadena, his family spurred a deep appreciation for music. Early on, he backed rockabilly singer James Intveld, then moved to Austin, where finding work as a guitarist wasn’t always easy. His big break came with a call from Gary Allan, which led to gigs with Wynonna Judd, Connie Smith, Lee Ann Womack, and others. Each brought new twists to his style and philosophy. And of course they discuss the gear Eddie has used through the years, from vintage to his favorite modern guitars and amps.

Conte himself started on drums as a kid, but jumped to guitar and has backed Paul Simon, Billy Squire, Willie DeVille, Peter Wolf, and the New York Dolls both with original frontman David Johansson, and now, with Michael Monroe. For more than 20 years, he has also sung and played music for the sci-fi series/movie “Cowboy Bebop” and other animé programs. Always a gearhead, they talk about the instruments and amps that have accompanied him throughout his career.
