#98 April 1994

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. This week we delve into April of 1994, the month the world collectively mourned the loss of Kurt Cobain of the band Nirvana, one of the main contributors of the grunge era and genre, a genre that most in the scene at the time believe “killed” heavy metal. Heavy Metal was in fact not dead nor was it lying dormant, the genre was hastily evolving despite the opposing musical genres being a force of mainstream success and salient popularity. Yes bands weren’t selling millions of records like the aforementioned Nirvana, but that’s never what the genre has been or ever will be about. Metal has forged its own contorted and wry path through the mainstream, creating our own titans and gods of the genre. And while the rest of the world mourned one musician, heavy metal never stopped advancing its brutality to the underground. This is the genre gnashing its teeth against the prey.
