As a professional artist for over 21 years, I get it – you want that loose, expressive style, but your paintings end up feeling stiff. I’ll let you in on a little secret…you’re trying too hard to get that effortless look.
What’s going to help you loosen up? Speed painting!
I learned about the power of speed painting almost by accident when an art consultant took the "unfinished" energetic pieces over my polished work. The process taught me a valuable lesson about play and having FUN with your art — crucial pieces to the process of making honest art®.
Speed painting may flip your creative process on its head…but your art will be better for it!

It took me years to find my artistic voice and achieve success, but I know it would have taken me a whole lot longer if I hadn’t invested in mentorship.
In this episode, I’m talking about why this level of support is critical to helping artists make their fine art fine.
If you’re skeptical about mentorship and community, listen in. If you’ve been mulling over the idea of mentorship and community, listen in, too! We artists NEED support — and a mentor can be the one to do it.

Being an artist and waiting for opportunities can feel a lot like being a middle schooler, awkwardly waiting in the gymnasium, hoping to be chosen for the team — or at least hoping you won’t be chosen last.
The good news is that this isn’t the middle school basketball team — it’s YOUR art. So you don't have to wait…you can create your own opportunities!
Tune into this episode to see how to host your own art show, including how to promote it, the benefits of going solo (or with a group), and day-of coordination. You’ll get 20+ of my best tips so you can learn from my own experience, and make sure yours goes off without a hitch.

When starting out, many artists (myself included), struggle to understand how to elevate their work. They often wonder if they need to add more or change their style to make something beautiful happen.
However, the secret isn’t in adding MORE, but in utilizing LESS. We’re talking about negative space! But it’s not a dirty word — it just means the empty space surrounding the subject of an artwork. And it’s crucial for creating focus, depth, and complexity in your art.
If you feel like your work is missing something, negative space may be the most POSITIVE step you have taken yet.

Many artists wonder how to be more free with their art, but the answer isn't a single step — it’s a way of life. When you are free, you start listening to your intuition and discover your own unique style.
That freedom helps you to create art that is honest, raw, and connects with others. Your art becomes more than just a pretty picture; it becomes an expression of your true self.
It’s time to let go, to ditch the self-editing, and fear of being judged. It’s time to rebel — and this episode will give you a few great places to start!

This week’s episode has a very special guest!
Meet Margie Woods — a soul-centered artist who I’ve brought in to talk more about how art helps us heal.
We’ll talk about her journey as a mixed media artist, photographer, creativity coach, and therapist and how she uses art as a mode of healing and self-expression with herself and her clients. We’ll also talk about how to detach yourself from the outcomes, embrace the rawness of creativity, and help others find freedom through art.
And because Margie is also part of our current Studio Elite cohort, you'll hear firsthand what it’s like inside. Don’t miss it!

As an artist, you’ll eventually face donation requests to have your art auctioned off for a good cause. And while it is an absolute honor, how do you decide which requests to accept — and which to politely decline?
In this episode, I’m sharing the art of setting boundaries and making thoughtful decisions when it comes to donating your work. Because yes, donating your art can be incredibly rewarding — but only if you approach it with intention and clarity.

In this episode, I’m talking to Caleigh Parsons, an artist who started painting in her 40s and is now making some MOVES. It’s time for another “Ask Me Anything” episode! I’m answering listener questions with my raw, honest opinion on all things art, and your career as an artist.
And while I get a lot of listener questions about ALL KINDS of things, on this week’s episode, I’m digging into some specifics when it comes to pricing and selling your art.
We’ll talk through questions like:
Should you use artists platforms that promise to “do it all for you”?
How can you effectively price your art (so it sells for all it’s worth)?
How do you deal with scammers when selling art?
And of course, plenty more.
Don’t forget — if you want to submit your own questions to be featured in my next Ask Me Anything, you can do so on my Patreon: http://patreon.com/honestartpodcast

The number one thing holding you back in your art? Self-doubt. That feeling of not-enoughness. That wondering if you’re even a real artist because you didn’t go to art school, you don’t have all the fancy supplies, you’re painting at your kitchen table…I could go on.
It’s time to tell that voice to take a hike, y’all. Our work as artists is too important to be shut down and held back by imposter syndrome.
In this episode of The Honest Art Podcast, we’ll dig into things like:
Why the fugly stage of your art isn’t a reflection of you as an artist

Are brand photos great for an artist? You bet. Don't believe me? I've brought on my own brand photographer, Alicia Leigh Rios, to help me out!
Alicia has an incredible talent for bringing out the best in others, and really knows how to make even the most camera-shy people feel confident (that’s me!). But I didn’t just bring her on the show to tell you how good she is. I brought her here to help you see why you, too, need brand photos as an artist!

I used to think that because I was introverted, there was no reason to have an art community. I already had the support of friends and family — wasn’t that enough?
The truth is, it wasn’t. Because of us artists? We NEED people who innately understand the creative process and can provide us with constructive feedback to improve our work. We aren’t meant to do this alone.
In this episode, I’ll share more about how joining an art community helped me, and how it can also help you overcome creative ruts and take advantage of new opportunities to propel your career forward.

I probably don’t have to tell you this, but…social media isn’t giving you the full story.
It’s really easy to play the comparison game when you see people (successfully) selling their art online. I’m guilty of it, too.
The truth is, most artists don’t JUST sell on social media. More than likely, they’re using multiple channels to show their work to potential buyers. It’s never JUST about posting a picture of your work and watching the bids roll in.
So, what about you? Are you relying solely on social media to sell your work? Well, then…it’s time to shake it up! Tune in to get a few different ideas for diversifying your artist's income.
P.S. This episode is full of some of my best tips for selling your work. Once you’re done listening (and have a better idea of what you want to do next), check out the FULL show notes library to learn more about each idea. I have TONS of content for you there: https://jodieking.com/podcast/

Art validates the human experience. Whether you believe it or not, so does your work (yes, even if you’re just painting for fun!).
Every piece has a story to tell and someone to connect to, so we can’t be afraid to get vulnerable when making art. Someone out there needs the raw, real version of what you have to say.
Your art matters, really. In this episode, I’ll show you all the ways you can discover how it makes an impact.

Talking about your art — why is it always SO difficult? Can’t you just tell people that the piece is what it is, and leave them to admire what they see?
Not quite. While this strategy can work if you’re just having fun with art (nothing wrong with that, by the way), if you want to SELL it, you’ll need to know how to articulate your WHY.
Does the thought of talking about your work terrify you? Make you sweat? Tune in to this episode — I’ve got a few methods that can help break the ice.

Being an artist is vulnerable work. Slinging paint away in the studio for hours on end, trying to pull what’s in your mind out onto the canvas… It can become heavy after a while.
That’s why we need a community of fellow artists to support us, which is part of why I created my Studio Elite artist mastermind. We aren’t meant to walk this artist’s path alone. Wondering how an artist mastermind could change your approach to your art (or your art biz)? Not sure a mastermind is right for you? Listen to what current Studio Elite members have to say about the community they’ve built and what else they’ve taken away from the program. They’ve had some truly amazing transformations — and they’ve built artist connections that will last for years to come.

I didn’t start painting because of its mental health benefits. However, it’s been an incredible benefit to my life. From the first painting I finished to slinging paint yesterday morning, art always seems to pull the deepest thoughts and feelings from the back of my mind.
Art helps us move emotions and stress out of our bodies. It helps us break past mental blocks and gives us the freedom and space to be our most authentic selves. Art is healing.
But have you ever wondered how? And why should it matter to you as an artist?
That’s what I’m answering in this episode of the Honest Art Podcast!

You may be ready to sell your art…but is your art ready to be sold?
It’s easy for artists to get caught up in the magic of creating our best work, but we can’t forget the logistics, too. Especially if we want to make a living from our art.
Selling your art requires knowing a few things about your ideal buyers AND what makes art sellable. And no, “good art” isn’t what sells.
Tune in to hear how to change your approach to selling your art based on your audience, and why you need a story to connect collectors to the right piece for them.

I get it, pricing your art is an uncomfortable topic for a lot of artists.
You’re worried people won’t buy the higher, but fair, price, so you lowball yourself over and over — until one day, you realize you’re not making any money from this gig!
Being an artist isn’t all about the money, but hey, those paintbrushes aren’t going to buy themselves! So to take some of that unknown out of the pricing equation (literally and figuratively), we’re talking about how to price your art in this episode!
We’ll cover:
Simple, practical, and easy ways to generate a fair price for your art
How to keep the buyer, collector, AND you, the artist, happy with the price
How to push past doubt when it comes to selling your work
NOTE: This episode is a rerun of Episode 14. Why am I running it again? Because y’all got SO MUCH out of it! I’ve gotten so many messages about how helpful it’s been, so I wanted to bring it back to help even more folks who are new to the Honest Art Podcast. Enjoy!

Artists need good copywriting. But just because it's business doesn’t mean it has to be boring.
To prove it, I’ve brought in another one of my team members, Latasha Doyle to talk about ALL things content and copy.
What we talk about in this episode is mission-critical when it comes to selling your art. But you’ll hear a unique perspective because we’ll also show you how you can do it in a way that feels right FOR YOU (and is FUN!).
You ready? Let’s get messy and write some content!

Check out a fresh, new installment of “Ask Me Anything,” where I answer listener questions with my raw, honest opinion on all things art and business.
And while we talk about a lot of things on this show — like how to use social media as an artist, how to apply to galleries, and even what makes something “real art” — today, we’re going to get a little more logistical here and talk about shipping, scams, time management, and more!

Like forging your mom’s signature on your report card, your artist's signature cannot be copied or replicated. It may look great to you, but others can tell it is not unique.
So, instead of trying to mimic what others are doing, it’s time we find our own style so our most authentic art can shine through.
How can you do that? In this episode, I’ll give you all the details!

Size matters…with your art.
So many artists think that just because they have a little skin in the game, they also need to size up their work. But that’s not true AT ALL.
Size doesn’t necessarily equate to success. In fact, there’s a lot to consider before you start creating bigger pieces of work, and it may not be right for you depending on what kind of business you want to run.
But if you’re curious about working with bigger canvases, and getting them to sell, this episode is for you!

Feeling uninspired? Find yourself comparing your work to others? Does art feel more like a chore than your lifeblood? Well, y’all…those are tell-tell signs of needing an artist’s detox.
But it doesn’t involve rehab. Actually, it’s going to be WAY more fun! In this episode, we’ll unpack some of the root causes of feeling “meh” when it comes to your art. Then, I’ll show you how to “detox” and work past it with nature, music, and exploration.
Let’s get your spark back, shall we?

This episode goes out to all the representational artists out there. Whether you paint chickens, cows, cars, or flowers, I hate to break it to you, but your work is probably missing one REALLY important thing….
YOU!
As a representational artist, it’s so easy to get swept up into creating a perfect piece. But the truth is, if you want to elevate and enhance what’s on the canvas, and make it, well, not boring AF, you’re going to need to infuse your own unique perspective into it.
How can you do that? That’s what I’ll be talking about in this episode!

On this episode, I’m challenging the notion that, in order to be happy, we have to have the things we want. Instead, what if we focused on being the person who made those things possible?
As artists, we’re so often holding ourselves back from happiness because we don’t “have” our goals yet. We don’t have a gallery show, we don’t have collectors, we don’t have a daily creative practice. The reality is, though, that we have to work on ourselves to make sure we’re the person who can make those goals a reality.
We can’t find satisfaction with our art (or our lives!) until we settle the score with ourselves. We have to BE the person who can achieve those goals we set for ourselves.
Not sure what I mean or how you can flip the script from “having” to “being”? That’s what we cover in this episode, along with challenging your goals (why have you set them?) and figuring out WHO you need to be to attain those goals.
This is a juicy one, so don’t miss out!

What does it mean when a piece of art “has it”? When you hear people say, “I get it”? To someone who doesn’t understand abstract art, it can feel like everyone else is speaking a language you don’t — but I’m here to break down what makes abstract art great.
The truth is, abstract art is about so much more than technique and skill. They’re important, sure, but there’s something much greater at play. It all comes down to doing the inside work before you get to work on the canvas. It’s about sharing the message that only you can share!
That’s what can make abstract art speak directly to people — even when there’s nothing “physical” represented on the canvas.
But how can you, as an artist, tap into your most-important message and share it on a canvas? That’s what I’ll be talking about in this episode,

What’s keeping you stuck? Is it your fear of failure? Or your fear of success?
Or maybe — and hear me out on this one — it’s the fear of something else entirely. Something we’re using “fear” and “success” as a blanket term for when really it’s a bigger, more personal, more important concern.
On this episode of the show, I’m talking about why the fear of success and the fear of failure as an artist stems from something so much deeper — and I’ll be showing you how to discover what that means for YOU.

When I first picked up the paintbrush, I had no idea how much art would one day impact my life. At first, painting was just a fun hobby, a way to add some me time in my life. I didn’t know that it would SAVE my life.
The truth is, though: Art heals. Not just mentally, but physically, too. In this episode of the Honest Art Podcast, I want to talk about why.
Even if you’ve never even so much as touched paint or drawn a stick figure before, you’re going to want to listen to this one! Because truly, we can all benefit from art.

There’s nothing quick and easy about abstract expressionist art.
We MUST avoid falling into the trap of thinking that our most honest art can come in “5 minutes or less.” This isn’t a hot and ready pizza — this is FINE art.
Still, staring at a blank canvas can get frustrating. But that rut may be because you’re making one of the 10 mistakes I’m sharing in this episode.
Trust me, avoiding these abstract art mistakes can make all the difference in your art — and can help you get your groove back so you create your best work.

What do you think makes your work unique as an artist? Is it the style you paint in, like abstract work or oil pastel paintings? Or is it something much deeper than that?
I’ll spoil this one for you: It’s so much deeper than your “style.” What makes your artwork unique is your voice, the thing that is pulled through any type of art you create. From style to style and medium to medium, your voice is the commonality between it all.
But what IS your voice and how do you find it so you can create your most honest art? I’m digging into all of that in this episode.
Listen in to hear:
How to stop caring what others (and yourself) think about your work
Where to find inspiration and how to recognize what you might already be inspired by
How to find your voice and how to use it

“Honest Art” is a phrase I use often. What started out as a simple hashtag is now the motto for my business and my life.
But after almost two seasons of the Honest Art Podcast, I realized I haven’t really done a deep dive into why this phrase is so important to me —or why it should matter to you.
So in this episode, I’m getting REALLY honest with you, and talking about where this phrase came from. You’re getting the entire backstory — the good, the bad, and the fugly — and how these experiences brought me to where I am today: talking about and teaching Honest Art.

Are you afraid to come out of the art closet?
I get it — I’ve been there. I was scared to call myself an artist and open myself to the eye-rolls and the “Get a real job” comments. But you know what’s on the other side of that fear?
So many amazing things.
That’s what guest Christen Horner and I get into for her interview on the Honest Art Podcast. Her story is amazing, and she’s been right where you are: Struggling to identify as an artist and really lean into that identity.
I hope she inspires you as much as she’s inspired me!

Painting and hoping is not a strategy.
You can’t just paint a beautiful picture and HOPE that someone finds it. We as artists need to put ourselves out there and CREATE our own opportunities. Because they don’t just fall from the sky.
Not sure how to create more opportunities for yourself and your art? Don’t know where to start? In this episode, I’m giving you five strategies to put your art in front of others. Things like…
Building community
Where to turn other than galleries to get your art features
Partnering with other organizations (like charities) to get your work out there
It’s time to start wishing you had opportunities…let’s make them happen for real!

Sex and creativity…what do they have in common? Turns out, a LOT more than you may think. But how do we tap into those similarities? And how can we use them to improve BOTH? Even both at the same time?
It’s what I’m digging into on this episode of the Honest Art Podcast. Tune in to see the correlation between sex and creativity, and how improving one almost always improves the other.

Is resolve the only thing you need to find success as an artist? Nope.
In fact, I see so many artists hustling day in and day out (myself included, once upon a time). Despite all their work, they’re still stuck and can’t seem to get the one thing every artist needs to build a thriving art career: a sale of their work!
Talking about money can be tough in this career but in this episode, I want to show you something you may not have thought about yet: Your money mindset, and how it could be holding you back.
Could the stories you’re telling yourself be keeping you from success? And are things like grit and determination really enough to help you build a successful art biz? Let’s find out!

Is it ever too late to start (or start over)? My guest, a widely talented artist named Betty Franks, doesn’t think so.
Betty worked in customer service management for YEARS before she ever picked a paintbrush. In fact, she didn’t take the leap to become an artist until she was 50.
Let Betty be proof: It’s never too late to do the things your soul aches to do.
And in this episode, Betty and I talk about how to get started (or start over), no matter where you’re at in life. We dish out our best advice for new artists of all ages, including:
How to put yourself out there despite being nervous
Dealing with naysayers and stepping into confidence (in yourself, and your art)
How to balance the business and the creative
Discovering your style (and why it’s a marathon…not a race)

Rejection: What can we learn from it?
THAT is the question we need to be asking, not “How can I avoid rejection?” Because we can’t — failure and rejection are just parts of life. It’s also a part of your journey as an artist.
Rejection doesn’t mean you suck. Hell, even the greats faced failure and rejection. Any time you fall down, it simply means you’re showing the eff up (and learning along the way). But to reap all the benefits and lessons that come from experiencing rejection, you have to first shift your mindset.
Failure can easily knock us down, but it’s how we get up that counts. And in this episode, I’ll show you a few ways to do that (as someone who has experienced rejection many, many times).

Ever heard the saying, “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard?” As an artist, you might not think about your art as “hard work” — but it is. And hard work requires showing up consistently.
If you want to improve your skills and create your best art, if you want to take things to that next level, you HAVE to be consistent. You have to actively face down creative blocks and challenges that try to prevent you from picking up that brush, pen, clay, what have you.
And in this episode of the show, I’m talking about 5 massive creative challenges I think every artist faces, and how you can overcome them.

WARNING: This episode is a juicy one.
We’re going to be talking about something pretty taboo, so buckle up!
Disclaimer: My only goal with the Honest Art Podcast is to help artists excavate their own authentic art and freedom through creativity. Never to judge, never to be the boss of YOUR life.
And sometimes, that means exploring topics that are a little more “taboo.” Because that y’all, is what makes honest art!
Which brings us to a question so many in the art world want answered: What happens to honest art when we add certain…substances (*wink wink*)…to the mix? Can substances really help us be more creative?
Tune in to find out!

Offering commissions…is the effort worth the reward? That’s what I’m uncovering in this episode. As an artist who has worked on several commissioned pieces, I’ve got a lot to say! And a lot that I think you, as a fellow artist, will find helpful.
Catch the full episode to hear about things like:
Why commissions DON’T need to be completed before the holidays (or any other special date like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, etc.)
How to price your work
The pros and cons of offering commissions
How to advertise them effectively
(P.S. — this episode was released in November of 2023. However, if you’re here after the holiday season, you can still apply what I cover on the podcast to ANY commission work you do. Enjoy the show!)

Forget the rules! … except maybe these ones.
Art is deeply personal and I love seeing the expression that comes alive when we, as artists, let go of our inhibitions.
But when it comes to composition? Those are rules I can get behind. Because sometimes those rules are the very thing we need to turn our art in the right direction when we feeling it going off the rails.
Tune in to this episode to hear seven different composition rules and how they can make your art the best it can be!

What’s on the other side of your comfort zone? Life-changing experiences, that’s what.
And on this episode of the Honest Art Podcast, Ana Stapleton and I really dig into why artists NEED to look for ways to break free from our norms and find new opportunities to grow.
Because it’s in those moments that we inevitably have experiences that shape who we are, not only as people but as artists. And when we step out of our comfort zone? We can create our best, most honest art yet.

What’s the one thing you need to create your best art — and sell more of it? Believe it or not, it’s not the most advanced art techniques or a business school degree. It’s… a spiritual practice. Before you roll your eyes, hear me out. A spiritual practice (or a self-care routine, if you prefer) is one the BEST ways to consistently hit your creative flow, and sell your best art.
I’ll prove it to you, too. In this episode, I’m taking a look at five things that can help us build spiritual practices and boost creativity. Things like:
Meditation
Journaling
Nature
Affirmations
Abundance Meditation

The sky’s the limit, right? When you’re an artist, that feels anything but true some days.
Between the gallery rejections, the side eyes when you tell people what you do for a living, and the endless effort to try and find YOUR style… this whole “artist” thing can feel like an uphill battle.
But don’t give up. You were MADE to do this y’all. I just know it.
Don’t believe me? I’ve brought in a friend to help me hype you up! Anne Neilson, fellow artist, author, home curator, and gallerist is here to give you the lowdown on how to overcome those negative feelings and truly come into your own as an artist.

Can music boost creativity? Absolutely! Can it help us as artists make our best, most honest art? Eh…not so fast.
I’m a HUGE music lover, but I have guidelines I like to abide by when adding music to the creative process.
No, it’s not about pressing play on one genre over the other. It’s about making sure your music is in alignment with your mood. You can’t bypass the emotional process (aka putting on happy music when you’re in a funk) if you want to make your most honest work.
So in this episode, we’re taking a deeper look into WHY music helps us create, and how to use music (and dancing!) to create our best art yet.

Do you know when to walk away from your art?
No matter how long you’ve been painting or how much natural talent you have, there WILL come a time when you don’t know what that next right move is. But instead of forcing the creativity out of you, you need to know when to put down the paintbrush and walk away.
In this episode, I talk about how to know when it’s time to do that, plus:
Why playing it safe is keeping you stuck
How to know when it’s time to get back to the canvas
Why understanding the creative process, start to finish, can help you decide the next right thing to do

For years, getting my art into a gallery was how I defined success as an artist. It was all I wanted to do. It was my number one priority and I hustled hard to make it happen.
But to my surprise, it didn’t happen overnight like I WANTED it to. It actually took an entire DECADE after I started my art career.
Because I know gallery shows are probably a goal you have too, I wanted to share my best tips for staying patient and making it happen. If you want your work to be noticed, this episode will show you how to get your art into a gallery.

Software is an important part of any business. But does it have a place in YOUR art biz? Absolutely. Full disclosure, I use a ton of different softwares to help me out — from podcast management to team calls, accounting, and more.
There is one software/tool, however, that stands above the crowd. It’s the ONE thing I can’t live without in my art biz. Why? Because it makes it easy for us artists to track our artwork, showcase our portfolios, and grow our business.
What am I talking about? Artwork Archive!
And for this special episode, I brought on Katie Carey, Head of Content and Growth at Artwork Archive, to show y’all how helpful this tool can be for ANY artist!

When it comes to money, what do YOU believe is possible? For many of us as artists, it’s hard to imagine that money and art can coexist in the same space. But if we want our art biz to grow, we must change how we see it.
Tune into this episode to hear more about the common beliefs artists have about money, how society, in part, shapes those beliefs and a few practical steps to overcome them.

Think it’s too early to think about your holiday art sales?
It’s never too early. Even as an artist, you need plenty of time to plan a collection, give yourself space to create, and promote it to potential buyers. All of that takes time and will slide by faster than you think.
So in this episode, I’m covering what exactly you should be doing NOW to prepare for selling your art during the holidays.
Even if you’re not selling a holiday collection (or are listening to this post-holiday season), these strategies and tips can help you whenever you launch!

What’s better as an artist; positive feedback or criticism? BOTH! You need positive feedback to feel supported and find the motivation to continue on with your work. But you also need “negative” (aka constructive) criticism to learn how to grow as an artist.
But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt! After all, you pour your heart and soul into your work. You can’t help but feel that type of critique is personal, right?
That’s why in this episode, I’m going to talk about how we can learn to embrace seemingly “negative” feedback, how to hold onto positive feedback, and why you should hold neither in too high of regard!

Getting my first art studio — game changer or bad investment?
I’m not one to buy into all the fancy stuff that “they” say makes you an artist, but having a studio of my own, OUTSIDE of home, was one of the best decisions I ever made in my art biz!
Listen to this episode to see if getting your own studio is the right move for you, and if so, what to consider when searching for the right space.

Welcome to season two of the Honest Art Podcast! Let’s get right into it with a deep one — myths about creativity. Really, I’d call them lies, because they’re straight-up NOT true.
But it’s something every artist and creative will experience at one point or another, so in this episode, I talk about things like:
Why we believe these lies in the first place
How fear plays a role in the propagation of these myths
Creating time to show up and stand tall in front of that canvas

I’m going to go bold here and say as artists, there’s no such thing as balance. The lines between work and play are constantly getting blurred because our work IS play.
And when you’re trying to juggle creating the best work you possibly can, work you’re PROUD of, with all the responsibilities that come with running a business…you really need something besides balance. You need ALIGNMENT.
That’s why in this episode I talk about:
Why all things do not contribute equal amounts to our lives
Determining priorities as an artist
Creating whitespace to keep the creative energy alive

As artists (and creatives) we tend to feel like our work is an extension of ourselves. But my guest on this episode, Keren Toledano, makes a really good point…not to hold on to your work too tight. You need to hold onto it with open hands if you want to experience the much-needed freedom and flexibility to be an artist!
Why? That’s what we’ll get into on the show, plus…
How your style as an artist evolves as you do
Why your work is not your identity (I.E. it’s okay if it changes!)

Working hard in business is non-negotiable. And as an artist, that means doing a lot more than JUST creating art. If you aren’t seeing the return from selling your work, or are struggling to get sales, my friends, it’s not because you’re a shitty artist. It’s almost always a backend problem instead.
So what’s the reason(s)? I’ll be digging into that in this episode, including…
Why admin and marketing are your two most powerful biz weapons as an artist
Why hope is not a strategy (sorry!)
How to keep going even when you want to quit

The jump from “real job” to becoming a full-time artist can be scary. And no one really talks about the identity shift that comes with it.

Career shifts and becoming an artist
Putting yourself out there as an introvert
Working with the flow of your art, not against it (AKA what you think it “should” be)

For many of us, we think that life stops as soon as we turn “middle-aged.” We wonder, “Are the good times over?”
I know this is all too common among artists especially. We wonder if we’ve missed our “chance” to change careers, pursue our creative hobbies full-time, etc. But that’s exactly why I’ve brought my very own sister and author of Midlife Battle Cry: Redefining the Mighty Second Half, Dawn Barton!
In this episode, not only are we going to give you the rundown of Dawn’s new book, but we’ll also talk about:
Feeling forgotten in your midlife
Turning 40+ and why it’s NOT the end of the road
The beautiful things that happen because of our age, not in spite of it

I talk a lot about being a rebel and freedom and empowerment. Those are all part of my WHY. But there’s a not-so-bright side to those that really held me back in my early years as an artist.
Because I don’t want you to have to experience the same feeling of loneliness I did, I’m sharing why, if I could go back in time, I’d get a mentor or find an art community much earlier.
In this episode, we’re going to get into it, and talk about:
Breaking through years of negative self-talk (specifically, as an artist)
How loneliness can impact our art
How to find a community/mentor for you
And by the way — if mentorship and community are something you’re seeking, you should check out Studio Elite. You want to make great art, but what if you feel like everything you make is just… well, fugly?
As an artist myself, I’ve been in the “fugly stage” so much I should have real estate in it! But I’m not alone — and neither are you. Every artist experiences it! The key to overcoming the fugly stage is to understand it and when it happens, so you can leverage it as inspiration rather than a source of frustration.
In today’s episode, I’m talking about how to turn the fuglies into something beautiful, plus:

Art is for everyone — and it can change lives.
That’s what organizations like Art From the Streets are proving, and I LOVE supporting causes that bring art to the people. All people.
That’s why I’m so excited that I got to sit down with Art From the Street’s amazing executive director, Kelley Worden.
In this episode, Kelley and I discuss everything this INCREDIBLE organization is doing for the unhoused population of Austin, TX.
They create a safe and supportive space for the unhoused people of Austin, TX to come together and create, even sell, their work. And I’m so proud to partner with this organization.
Because we ALL have a fundamental need to create and express ourselves. And while the vehicle may be art, the purpose is connection and community.
In this episode, Kelley and I talk more about:
The mission behind Art From the Streets
How Art From the Streets is making an impact that goes beyond painting
Their annual gala/fundraiser happening on April 12 (which I will be helping out with!)

In this episode of the Honest Art Podcast, I sit down with long-time friend and fellow artist, Dr. Kathleen Funk, to talk about what it means to use art as a method of healing.
Kathleen’s experience in healing practices spans over 3 decades — she’s a fourth-generation healer who uses her art IN her medical practice as an acupuncturist (how cool, right??). And in this episode, we really get onto the good stuff, including:
How Kathleen uses her healing practice to inform her art, and vice versa

How to use your own intuitive practices to guide yourself in making the most authentic, honest art possible.

As artists, we want to make art. That’s it. As artists who want to make a living from our art… well, making art is just one part of the equation.
The other part involves sitting in front of our computers, sending emails, filing taxes before the deadlines, and crunching numbers. It’s not the sexiest, most creative work — which is why most art biz owners avoid it.
But if you want your art biz to grow, you can’t ignore the business stuff. You gotta do both. So that’s why in this episode, I’m talking about:
Reasons why you feel stuck in your art biz
How to make business more fun and engaging so you actually feel like doing it

There are plenty of reasons we get stuck as artists. It could be exhaustion. It could be life happening around you. It could be excuses we make because we feel guilty about taking time for ourselves (“I just *have* to clean out that pantry today”). It could be something else entirely.
Whatever is happening, you’re feeling stuck and uninspired. You’ve tried it all, tried to set yourself up for success, but you can’t seem to get back that energy you crave.
If you’ve been feeling uninspired with your art lately, you’re in the right place. In this episode, we’ll talk about:
How we get stuck in a rut
Where artists tend to get the most tripped up when creating (anything)
5 ways to break through that resistance and find your groove again

Selling your first piece of art is easily the most exhilarating and nerve-wracking experience as an artist. But it’s something that you can’t get enough of once it happens.
If you haven’t sold anything yet but your closets and studio are bursting at the seams with canvases and pieces, it might be time to start selling. But what if you’re not confident in your work? And how in the hell do you price art to sell?
That’s what we’ll cover in this episode.
We’ll also talk about:
How to overcome your nerves when selling your first piece of art
How to tell imposter syndrome to kiss your ass so you can get paid what you’re worth
A few methods for landing on a fair price (for you and the buyer)

What would it look like if you had the freedom to express your creativity in the most authentic way possible? No restraints, no “should do’s,” no frameworks. Just pure, honest art.
In this week’s episode of the Honest Art Podcast, fellow Artist Nichole Washington and I sit down to discuss just that!
Nichole has had an amazing career, and I’m truly inspired by her work and her spirit. Her work embodies female strength, identity, and spirituality, and inspires other artists to live as their most authentic selves — no matter what anyone else has to say about it!
We talk all about why it’s so important to leave the idea of “being artsy” behind, and define what making art means to YOU.
In this episode, we talk about:
Nichole’s journey from “shy kid” to empowering artist
Finding your own voice through your art
How feeling confident in your work can impact others to do the same
Breaking down the “artsy” personality, and why it’s more important to be true to yourself

Art school doesn’t teach you everything. I guess that’s true of any education — real-life experience will always win out over textbook learnin’. But if you want to grow an art biz, art school doesn’t really teach you how to do that.
As an entrepreneur with years of experience running businesses before I picked up a paintbrush, I’ve learned a thing (or 47) about what it takes to sell your art for a living. Now, I want to share 10 things that art school grads might want to know about owning an art biz.
In this episode, I talk about how to:
Market your business effectively and get your work in front of the right people
Harness the power of modern technology to do that (social media + email are our friends!)
Effectively use your time and energy to keep your art biz afloat
If you want to learn more about the business side of owning an art biz (because yes, it IS important!) check out Art Biz for Rebels: https://www.jodiekingart.com/artbizforrebels. I’ll teach you several strategies for establishing yourself as an artist, how to price your art and apply to galleries, plus tons more!

Most artists will tell you how much they dislike social media, but it’s actually one of the most underrated tools in the art biz world. If you’re looking to get more eyes on your art and sell it to more people (whether that be individual collectors or galleries), you need to be online!
In this episode, I will cover how to sell more art with social media — and how to do it without feeling like you’re selling your soul by being too “salesy”.
In this video, I talk about:
How to build a connection before conversion
Owning who you are as an artist and as a person to create more valuable content
Practical tips for selling online

I’m over the starving artist trope, and so is my first-ever guest, Julie Torres! Julie is a fine artist who works with print medium and woven screen print. You may have seen her famous Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) series, or some of her other work in places like the Delta Sky Club or the Chicago Tribune Tower.
In this episode we talk about:

We all know art is FUN, but did you know it can also be therapeutic?
In this episode, I’m covering how art can help you move stress, whether that’s the day-to-day kind or something a little deeper, through your body to start healing and bring a daily dose of calm and clarity.
We’ll also talk about:
I’ll also give you some of my favorite ways to break down the barriers and just start creating art that heals, whether you’re totally new at this or a seasoned pro.

Do you have what it takes to become an artist?
Almost 20 years ago, I didn’t think I did. I didn’t go to art school, and I didn’t even start painting until I was 35. Even after years of selling my work in stores, I still couldn’t bring myself to brand myself as an artist.
And now? I own a 6-figure art biz, I get to do what I love every day, and I get to teach other people how to do it. It just goes to show you that it’s never too late to start showing up to do the work that YOU love.
If you want to hear my story about how I broke into the art world with absolutely ZERO idea of what I was doing, tune in.

Welcome to The Honest Art Podcast with me, Jodie King! This is something I’ve been wanting to share with y’all for a while now, and I’m just so excited that it’s finally happening.
A little bit about this podcast — every week, I’m going to release a new episode that will cover anything from how to make better art to how to build an art biz, reconnect with your creativity, and use art for healing. I’ll also be sharing my personal journey and the journey of other artists through interviews I can’t wait to host and share this podcasting journey with.
Is it time to make the jump into full-time biz ownership?
As artists, there’s more to “making a living from your art” than just being a good artist. You could be the best artist but never sell a single pieces if you’re not at least thinking about it as a business, too.
Our skills alone won’t support us — but they will if you’ve got some great (and simple!!) business strategies to back them up.
If you have ever wondered if you could make a full-time living with your art, this episode will walk you through a few questions to determine when you’re ready. Questions like:
