India and France are negotiating a Rs 50,000-crore deal for 26 Rafale Marine (Rafale M) fighter jets. If finalised, these aircraft will be deployed on the Indian Navy's aircraft carriers, INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya.

Why the Rafale M? The French Rafale M emerged as the frontrunner against its competitor, the American Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet.

Why does the Navy need a new fighter jet? The Indian Navy’s current fleet, primarily composed of ageing Sukhoi jets, is becoming obsolete. This decline in capability is driving the urgent need for new, modern fighters.

But how does the Rafale M differ from the IAF’s Rafale? Interestingly, the Rafale M predates the Air Force version. Despite this, France completed the delivery of all 36 Rafale jets to the Indian Air Force in December 2022, following a Rs 59,000-crore deal signed in September 2016. Why didn't the Navy and Air Force consolidate their orders together? A joint deal could have potentially reduced post-purchase costs.

And why the repeated trials? If the government had already determined that the Rafale M was the best choice, why did they conduct another contest only to choose the same fighter jet again?

Initially, the project will involve a limited off-the-shelf acquisition of Strykers through the US Foreign Military Sales program. Subsequent phases will include joint production in India, culminating in the co-development of future versions.

This week, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited announced a significant development: the Defence Ministry has issued a Request for Proposal for 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs) as part of the government's push to boost defence indigenisation. Of these, 90 will be allocated to the Indian Army and 66 to the Indian Air Force (IAF). Currently, 15 Prachands are in service with the IAF and 5 with the Indian Army. The LCH was formally named Prachand in October 2022.

What Makes the Prachand Special?

The Prachand, a marvel of modern engineering, is the world's only attack helicopter capable of landing and taking off at 5,000 meters (16,400 ft). This unique feature makes it ideal for high-altitude operations in challenging areas like the Siachen glacier and eastern Ladakh. Equipped with a range of air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles, it can neutralise enemy air defence operations.

The 2019 Balakot airstrike was a significant military operation conducted by the Indian Air Force in response to the Pulwama terrorist attack. This marked the first time since the 1971 War that Indian aircraft had conducted an airstrike on Pakistani soil.

The strike targeted a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Balakot, Pakistan. The Indian Mirage-2000 fighter pilots carried out the airstrike, aiming to eliminate terrorist threats.

The following day, the Pakistan Air Force retaliated with a strike in the Rajouri sector of Jammu. In the ensuing aerial battle, India claimed to have shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter aircraft while losing a MiG-21, with its Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman captured after ejecting over Pakistani-held territory. Later, he was repatriated.

The aftermath of the airstrike saw controversies, including unverified news in the newsrooms and conflicting reports. The duo, Dev Goswami and Shiv Aroor recount their experiences covering the event. Trudeau told this later country’s House of Commons.

The chapter weaves a touching narrative where two friends engage in an exchange of heartfelt letters, expressing their deep gratitude for the freedom they relish, a freedom hard-earned through the unwavering sacrifices of our valiant soldiers.

This addition finds its place within the book 'Honeycomb,' although it's not a piece of literature but rather a compilation of readings, says Abhishek. While some aspects might appear 'stereotypical', he says, the overarching message is centered around national integration.

Interestingly, a thought-provoking query arises: Is incorporating such chapters truly the most effective approach to cultivating these values? Could there be a risk of students perceiving it as a forced imposition? The effectiveness of these inclusions in making a substantial impact stands as a pertinent question.

A brand-new airbase has been established at an incredibly high altitude of over 13,000 feet. This airbase is designed to boost our ability to respond to a more assertive China. It includes fighter aircraft, advanced radars, and upgraded drones, all aimed at improving surveillance in Ladakh.

Named the Nyoma air base, it's the third such facility in Ladakh for fighter aircraft operations. There are already similar bases in Leh and Thoise.

The Nyoma air base's construction has begun, and it's less than 50 kilometers away from the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the border between India and China.

Is this going to make a big difference? Why did India decide to build this airbase now? What series of events have led to the Indian defense establishment to finally take this decision? Another distressing incident involved an RPF constable who shot and killed four people, including his senior officer and three Muslim passengers, on the Mumbai-bound Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express near Palghar railway station. The constable, Chetan Kumar, was later arrested by the Government Railway Police, GRP.

On February 26, 2019, fighter jets of the Indian Air Force bombed a terrorist camp in Balakot, Pakistan. The Balakot airstrike – as the operation came to be known – was the first time since the 1971 war that Indian warplanes attacked a target inside Pakistan. The cross-border bombing raid was in response to the February 14, 2019 Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

The already-high tensions between Delhi and Islamabad escalated even further after Pakistan responded to the Balakot airstrike with an attempted air raid of its own and the subsequent capture of an Indian Air Force pilot by Pakistan.

India celebrated its 74th Republic Day on January 26th, 2023 with a grand parade in the capital city of New Delhi. The parade, which is an annual event, was held at Kartavyapath and was attended by dignitaries from all over the world, including the President of India.


This year's parade had a special focus on the inclusion of women in the military. For the first time in India's history, an all-women's motorcycle team from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) participated in the parade, showcasing their precision and skill. The parade also featured a tableau from the Indian Army's Corps of Signals, which highlighted the role of women in the Indian Army's communication network.


The parade also showcased India's military might, with a display of various weapons systems and equipment, including tanks, missiles, and fighter jets. The Indian Air Force also performed a fly-past, with fighter jets and helicopters showcasing their capabilities.


The parade also included a display of India's cultural diversity, with floats from various states of India showcasing their unique customs, traditions, and art forms.


The parade was followed by a 21-gun salute and the national anthem was played. The President of India also awarded bravery medals to members of the Indian military for their service and sacrifice to the nation.


The Indian military played a major role in the republic day celebrations, with the three wings of the Indian armed forces, the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force participating in the parade. The parade also showcased the Indian military's capabilities, strength, and readiness to defend the nation.

Squadron leader Avani Chaturvedi, the Indian Air Force’s first female fighter pilot, is set to take part in a maiden air exercise ‘Veer Guardian-2023’. The exercise will be carried out from January 16 to January 26 at the Hyakuri Air Base and its surrounding airspace in Omitama, and the Iruma Air Base in Sayama in Japan.

The women officers have been participating in wargames with the foreign contingents coming to India, including the French Air Force where two of the lady fighter pilots took part, but this would be the first time they would be representing the country on foreign land.

Besides, Captain Shiva Chouhan of the Indian Army's Fire and Fury Corps became the first woman officer to get operationally deployed at the world's highest battlefield, Siachen, after a month's arduous training at Siachen Battle School along with other personnel.

All this is brilliant, however, questions are raised of women's limited representation.

Women have been serving in the Indian Armed Forces in various roles for several decades. They are currently allowed to serve in all branches of the military, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. In recent years, the Indian government has made efforts to increase the representation of women in the Armed Forces, with a goal of having women comprise 15% of the military by 2020.

However, due to various factors, the representation of women in the Indian Armed Forces is still relatively low, with women making up just over 3% of the military as of 2021. Despite this, women have been serving in non-combat roles such as in logistics, medical and education corps, and have also been inducted in combat roles in the Indian Airforce.

In the 41st episode of In Our Defence, Dev Goswami, the show's host, and "Def-Savvy" Abhishek Bhalla the national bureau chief, are joined by India Today TV’s Executive Editor Preeti Choudhry. Well, Preeti does have an army background but “she never describes herself as a fauji brat”, Bhalla remarks.

Referring to Chaturvedi’s achievement Bhalla believes that it’s not a landmark. “Because if she is already a fighter pilot, she would be expected to be going to such exercises.”

“Talking about these is really cosmetic.” I feel the army is more discriminatory than the other armed forces,” Preeti says.

A week has passed by since the "Agnipath" or Path of Fire initiative was announced for applicants aged 17.5 to 21.  Each year, between 45,000 and 50,000 troops will be recruited, with the majority of them leaving the military after just four years, with only 25% of them being retained after that.

Amid the ongoing protests against the scheme, the Indian Air Force issued its notification, stating that registration will start from June 24. 

Is it acknowledged that things might have been conveyed and people could have been engaged better given the violent protests that erupted following the announcement? And whether this is the best course of action? Should the government have been more explicit about its long-term goals? Why wasn't it implemented as a pilot programme?
