Dave’s experience this week visiting the Apple Store for repairs. His mother in Law’s iPhone 15 had a big chip on the screen. Haven’t figured out how she did this.

It was covered by AppleCare. Interesting find when using the Apple Support. You now can get an advanced replacement if you choose. If you can’t wait for the repair you can pay $99 and Apple will send you an advance replacement iPhone. I think it's worth taking the time to bring it into the Apple Store and pay the $29.

Apple year in review 2022. Apple had only 3 events plus a press release in 2022. We did a recap of the announcements (reviewed below) and what did stand out to us this year.

The March 6th event was entitled Peek Performance. They announced the iPhone SE (3rd generation) with the Apple A15 Bionic chip and Ceramic Shield with a base price of $429. The iPad Air (5th generation) was announced with the Apple M1 chip, Center Stage.Studio Display and Mac Studio.

WWDC 2022 was June 8-10 and as always new OS are announced. iOS16, iPadOS16, also announced watchOS 9 as well as updates to CarPlay, HomeKit, Parental Controls. MacBook announcements.

The third event on September 7th was entitled Far Out. What was introduced was the Apple Watch Series 8, 2nd-generation Apple Watch SE, and Apple Watch Ultra. Other announcements included the 2nd-generation AirPods Pro, iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max. New Apple processors included the Apple H2 and A16

A press release on October18 announced The 6th-generation iPad Pro with the Apple M2 chip, 10th-generation iPad with the Apple A14 Bionic chip, Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad‎, and 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K console with the Apple A15 Bionic chip iPadOS 16 is scheduled to be released on October 24 with the new iPad models appearing in stores on the October 26. The new Apple TV 4K console arrived on November 4.

Pronounced MEMIRROR, Mimir is a great Podcast app that started on the Mac and he recently released the iOS version. Dave asked, what inspired you to create this app?

He has developed various other apps over the years notably the game Legal Legends game.

Version 1.5.0 was just released and we reviewed some of the improvements. Notably this was the first release for iOS outside of Beta. We did talk about iCloud Sync which just added this version and the challenges it has keeping synced. Dave noted how important it is to export the database file OPML that saves all your subscribed podcasts so you can restore it.

Apple Event Coverage

Spring Loaded Apple Event was really loaded with new product releases. We review the event, the products, and what we are going to buy.

Briefly: Apple Card now adds Apple Card Family and you can now have your spouse on the same account as well as you can add family sharing members like kids on to use the card with limits. The Credit limits will be combined and the lowest APR will be added to the combined account.

Apple leads the next chapter of podcasting with Apple Podcasts Subscriptions

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini have Purple as a color choice. Not the 12 Pro pr 12 Pro Max.

AirTag

The AirTag is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance.
31 different emoji can be engraved on the AirTag, but not all at once. Sorry.
You can spend $449 on a luggage tag for your $29 AirTag thanks to Hermès, who are kind enough to throw the AirTag in at that price.

iPad Pro

The maximum storage capacity of the iPad Pro has been increased to 2TB and the storage is up to 2x faster.
Graphics performance is 40% faster than the A12Z iPad Pro and 1500 times faster than the original iPad.
The M1 in the iPad Pros is 75 times faster than the original iPad and 50% faster than the A12Z iPad Pro’s CPU.
5G mobile connectivity is available worldwide, with millimeter wave limited to the US.
The iPad Pros support WiFi 6.
Storage options range from 128GB to 2TB
Memory options 8GB RAM with the 128, 256, and 512GB storage. 16GB RAM with 1TB and 2TB
The 11” iPad Pro weighs 1.03 pounds (466 grams) unless you get the cellular model, which adds .01 pound (4 grams), while the 12.9” model weighs in at 1.5 pounds (682 grams) and a smidge more for the cellular model.
Apple revealed that the 1TB and 2TB models feature a whopping 16GB of memory, while the lower capacity models have 8GB.
The Liquid Retina XDR display on the 12.9” iPad Pro has 10,000 Mini-LEDs, 2596 local dimming zones, a 1,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio, 1000 nits of full screen brightness, and 1600 nits of peak brightness.
The 11” model is 2388 x 1668 pixels with a 600 nit brightness.
Both screens have 1.8% reflectivity.
The new TrueDepth camera has a 12MP sensor, with a 122-degree field of view and 𝑓/2.4 aperture.
The TrueDepth camera captures video at 1080p and 25, 30, or 60 fps.

Apple TV 4K with new Siri Remote

AppleCare+ for Apple TV Now Available for the First Time

The device streams 4K video just as the name suggests.
New Siri Remote! At 5.8 x 1.4 inches, the Siri Remote is a little larger than the one it replaces and weighs 63 grams.
The Apple TV 4K now supports Bluetooth 5 an upgrade to the older model’s Bluetooth 4.
WiFi 6 is supported.
The new Apple TV 4K uses the A12 Bionic chip.

2020 Year in Review for iOS/iPadOS and hardware. With the world upside down because of the pandemic, Apple had a banner year with many new product releases, WWDC and 3 virtual events. What were our top things that Apple announced. We list below some of the highlights.

January - iPad turned 10
March - New iPad Pros and iPad Magic Keyboard
April - iPhone SE 2nd Gen was released
June - WWDC held virtually for the first time iOS14 and iPadOS 14 was announced in beta.
September - was the 1st virtual event announced New Apple Watch Series 6 and SE, iPad Air w/ Touch ID on the power button, Apple One Bundles
October was the 2nd virtual event announced iPhone 12 models and HomePod Mini. iOS14 released to everyone.
November was the 3rd virtual event in which they announced the First Apple Silicon M1 Macs which can also run iOS / iPadOS applications.
December Apple announced the new $550 AirPods Max Headphones and Fitness+ was released.

What do we expect for 2021? we discuss what Apple may release next year. New iPad Pro is one thing discussed.

Beta this week: iOS 14.4 beta was released on 12/6/20 with no beta number. Doe it have ad tracking notification enforced? Currently it is optional for developers to prompt the user. Its possible Apple may start enforcing it with iOS 14.4.

Magsafe accessories we discuss which ones we use and are they worth it.

iPhone 12 mini (is there a market for it?) Brian has the iPhone 12 Mini and gives his review and we discuss if this model lives up to its size.

Safari in iOS Tips

Translate in Safari When you navigate to a website an want to translate it Tap the Aa button in the bar and select translate. Show the settings and show how to add languages to make it easier to translate. Toggle between English and other language.

Privacy Report - Click the Aa button on the bar and select Privacy report. You would be amazed how many trackers there are on some websites.

Brower Default - When you install other browsers like Firefox, Edge, Chrome, and some others you now can change the default browser. Goto Settings > in this case Chrome and select Default Browser.

Clipboard privacy. iOS 14 now is watching when apps use your clipboard. When you copy and paste something from one app to another you will get a warning like this.

Apple Releases First Betas of iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 to Developers [Updated]

Apple Event this week there were quite a few announcements. We reviewed the event and what was announced.

Apple Watch Series 6 with Blood Oxygen Monitoring and New colors, New faces, solo loop bands. Also announced Apple Watch SE with Family Set up to pair multiple watches to one iPhone.

iPad 8th Gen 10.2” with pencil and keyboard support starts at $329 with $299 education discount. iPad Air 10.9” with A14 chip, USB -C and Touch ID in power button. Who needs a Pro with the specs of Air stars at $599.

Fitness+ to compete against Peloton its a workout service $9.99 per month $79.99 a year coming in the fall. 3 Months free with Apple Watch purchase.

Apple announced iOS14, iPadOS14, WatchOS 7, tvOS14 were released today. It made total sense since there are new iPads and Apple Watch and someone (Friend Guy Serle) thought it would be released next year. Apple did make developers unhappy giving them less than 24 hours to have their apps ready.

AppleOne Bunde, Starting at $14.95 you can now bundle many of the services for a better price.

iPhone and iPad Apps Coming to Macs With Apple Silicon, Developers Can Manage Availability in App Store Connect

AirPods:

Spatial Audio: Apple has added support for Spatial Audio for the AirPods Pro with Dynamic Head Tracking and it uses Sound Channels in the correct place to give you a surround experience and will adjust even if you move or tilt your device or head.
Automatic Switching: Apple has also added Automatic Switching for the AirPods Pro, AirPods (2nd generation), Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, and the Beats Solo Pro with iOS 14. When you finish your work on your iPhone and start using your iPad, AirPods will automatically switch to the iPad.
Headphone Accomodations: iOS 14 introduces Headphone Accomodations which allows users to select the sound effect they prefer. According to Apple, “Headphone Accommodations amplifies soft sounds and can tune for your individual hearing, to help music, phone calls, and more sound crisp and clear. It is supported on Works with AirPods Pro, AirPods (2nd generation), EarPods, Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Solo Pro.

We begin our topics for the 100th episode and go back in time with a clip from Episode 32. Dave was lucky enough along with Mike Potter from MacStock to visit the Apple store Michigan Ave Chicago for his Apple user group and brought us into their board room for presentations.

Beta this week. Warren withdrawal time there is no beta right now iOS 13.5 is current as we wait on WWDC announcements. We debated last week about will iOS14 be delivered as well as the new iPhones and clarify.

We are seeing many online sellers including Woot offer really cheap older phones (of course the are already sold out). Well the iPhone SE is such a solid phone and has been out for about 1 month now. We talk about how this iPhone has done in the lower priced market.

HBO Max Launches on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV There is lots of confusion there are 3 articles we reference. We also talk about the App on iOS, iPad OS and AppleTV. They at the last minute included HBO Max as part of the subscription

Beta time Apple released iOS 13.5 beta 2 yesterday it doesn’t seem like there is any real changes and its probably going to be released soon. BTF: last release before iOS14?

Apple announced the iPhone SE yesterday and we discuss our initial thoughts, and where we thing Apple is going with this new mode. AppleCare will be only $79 and we look at comparing with the other models. This is not the SE model of old. BTF: great specs, great price. Still lacking on some of the internals of other iPhones, but a great device to recommend if you prefer TouchID/smaller devices.

Barry has the new 12.9” 2020 iPad Pro and he gives us a review and how he likes it so far.

BTF: key strengths: cursor/trackpad control - for editing documents it has been really handy, especially when using documents in programs such as Pages or Word.

It will become more valuable when I don’t have to take my hand off the keyboard and can ‘thumb’ the trackpad similar to the MacBook Pros. Still, some keyboard commands may be preferred, but having the option makes it all the more powerful.

The AR features are not something that I use too much, but with the AR features on Apple’s websites, it seems much more stable than previous models.

The “measure” app is also more solid.

Dave was lucky enough to receive a Sonos Move speaker for his work anniversary. He has had it a few weeks and is going to give his review.

The Music app added some great new features in iOS 13.1.2 including radio stations and lyrics.

Radio Stations - Apple partnered with the 3 big audio content audio content providers and they have added a number of radio stations around the world with many more added. It works very well with Siri on all devices including HomePod. How does it compare to the Amazon Echo?

Able to stream radio stations from all over the world. This may be more of a general Siri enhancement that is implemented on your Mac and HomePod, but also works in Apple Music on your iOS device.

Lyrics in Apple Music have been vastly improved its Karaoke on Mac and AppleTV too. We talk about this. Karaoke 3rd party app in Apple TV?

Duplicates in Playlists are a thing of the past. Apple Music will tell you if there are dupes in your Playlists and will warn you if you are adding one to a Playlist.

Shuffle and Repeat controls have moved yet again. To find them you have to be on the Now Playing page and in the Up Next section you’ll see the controls for those functions.

Tips and new features in iOS13

One of my favourite features: Files.app

Tap and hold feature in the Mail app. Formatting emails have become so much easier.

Airpods you can now have 2 airpods connected at the same time! Those days of getting a Y adapter connecting them to a headphone jack are over.

Dark Mode. The most discussed feature added. You can even control dark mode in the control center.

New Volume HUD (heads uo display) on the screen

AirDrop Menu update and much more reformed and prioritizes the closest device.

3D Touch has been replaced with Haptic Touch. Even older devices like the iPhone SE will have haptic touch. New more refined menus and it's now much easier to get the wiggle to rearrange apps and delete them as there is a menu item.

Updating your apps have changed too. In the App store you tap your picture on the top right and it brings you to the Account.

The Share Sheet has numerous new upgrades including redesign.

iOS 13 Experiences. Bob has had Beta on many of his devices since it was announced at WWDC. He had to go back to iOS 12 at beta 3 at some point because the biggest problem was with syncing with iCloud. He since went back to beta 7 on his devices and found it to be a much better experience. Beta 8 is now running better as well. Reminders app works so much better. Did not update the Apple Watch or Apple TV.

iPadOS 13 have been solid in beta 7 and beta 8. Safari on iPad is so much better. Download manager that was added is so much better.

Bob has not used his Mac all summer to try and use just the iPad. Safari and organization has been amazing. Listen as we discuss. Apple has links to whats coming here:

Last week, Dave attended the Jamf Nation User Conference where they introduced an amazing, portable classroom called the MATTER Innovation Hub and he got to tour it. Jamf had this converted shipping container sent to Hope School in Haiti where they have no electricity. The classroom is solar-powered and the teachers are able to educate underprivileged students about coding and technology using iPads.

Ohio State University is now issuing iPads to all incoming Freshmen using jamf to set them up.

Red Lion Hotel chain is piloting the use of Apple TVs in every room with all TV functions and hotel information provided.

iPhone Xr review - we discuss the review from the Verge the $250 difference between the new iPhone XR and Apple’s top-of-the-line iPhone XS. It’s the price difference between the XR’s 6.1-inch “Liquid Retina” LCD screen and the 5.8-inch OLED screen on the XS. Apart from the display, the XR and XS are far more similar than not: they share the same A12 Bionic processors, main cameras with Smart HDR, iOS 12, gesture controls, wireless charging capabilities, and even the forthcoming dual-SIM support.

Recap of Apple Event Announcements from September 12th Apple eats a bit of “humble pie” in the opening film to their “Gather Round” event which is a spoof on Mission Impossible. They know they haven’t been able to keep their product announcements so secret anymore, so they made it look as though there was going to be some really extra special super secret product in a briefcase and it turned out to be...well, you can watch it here: September Keynote 2018 — Opening Film and view all of the announcements here.

This keynote was especially polished. The opening graphic as Tim Cook walked out on stage was that of a rose gold circle to represent the architectural design of their new digs. Throughout the event, you see that circle design prominently featured on product close-ups like the back of the new Apple Watch and on the single camera of the iPhone XR. They’re really emphasizing soft and curvy edges.

Apple Watch Series 4 was announced first with even more health features including the built-in ability to take an ECG (electrocardiogram) and Fall Detection. The digital crown now has haptic feedback when turned and the surface of it is a sensor where you place your finger to take an ECG. The speakers have been improved and the microphone was moved to the other side to make using Siri more effective. There are two hardware configurations available in two sizes. The entry-level aluminum 40mm GPS model starts at $399. For an additional $100 you can get the GPS + Cellular model and leave your iPhone at home. Add on $30 more for an additional 4 mm of watch to get the 44mm if you like to live large. Upgrading the bands or case material to stainless steel adds to the price and overall fashion statement you can make with an Apple Watch. It should be noted that you will be able to use all of your existing bands with the new hardware. Here is a link to Apple’s shopping page where you can experiment with combinations to find the right Apple Watch for you or someone special. You can also still get Apple Watch Series 3 which is now down to $279 for the base aluminum GPS model. Adding cellular costs $100 more plus whatever your carrier charges you per month for that ability.

Earth Wind and Fire Watch Faces In addition to Earth, we’ll now have “Wind” (in the form of “vapor” and “breathe”) and Fire watch faces from which to choose.

Here are four new watch faces coming to existing Apple Watches with watchOS 5 — 9 to 5 Mac watchOS 5 is coming to an Apple Watch near you on September 17th and it’s available on all models except the “Series 0.” Here is Apple’s complete watchOS Feature Availability listing.

Good Things Come in Threes Including New iPhones There are now three new iPhone offerings in addition to all the previous models still available. There’s now more choice than ever before with a price point and form factor for just about anyone. Despite all the hardware offerings available, by making iOS 12 available on 28 models of iPhone and iPad going back the span of FIVE years, we still can’t really call Apple’s device lineup “fragmented” because of how they are managed and updated so elegantly. Each base price begins at the 64GB size which has become the sweet spot of hard drive sizes for the budget-minded and storage-conservative users. Even the beloved iPhone SE is still available in 32GB for $349 at authorized resellers for comparison on the low-end and even more budget-friendly.

iPhone XS 5.8 inch display $999 and iPhone XS Max 6.5 inch display $1099 — both are available in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold finishes.

iPhone XR 6.1 inch display $749 is the “budget” model of this year’s lineup. It’s a vast improvement on the iPhone 5c from the last time they designed a “fun” phone. (Preordering begins October 19th at 12:01 PDT) It is available in White, (PRODUCT)RED, Coral, Yellow, Blue, and Black finishes. We Spent Some Time With Apple’s Colorful iPhone XR. Here’s What You Should Know — Time

Melissa’s Budgeting Breakdown When iPhone 8 Plus came out, it was $799 which is $50 more than what iPhone XR costs now. If you’re in need of an upgrade and are on the fence between the now $699 iPhone 8 Plus yet really want the iPhone X experience, consider that for $50 more, iPhone XR has a faster chip and Face ID. It’s also a smaller, more pocketable form factor with a slightly larger display so there’s no sacrifice there. While it only has a single camera system, it’s still capable of snapping pictures that feature Portrait mode and Depth Control. You’d be sacrificing telephoto and wide-angle capabilities of iPhone XS, so if you’re a traveler or birdwatcher, you may not want to lose out on those features. There is no 3D Touch, but many would argue it’s an underused and underappreciated feature that may end up being replaced with Haptic touch in the future anyhow. There’s also no need to be concerned about picking out a black or white front with that edge to edge screen. If you’re trying to decide between iPhone XR and iPhone XS, an extra $250 ($999 iPhone XS compared to $749 iPhone XR) will get you:

Best camera to date: wide angle and telephoto vs single camera
Best display to date: 6.5 inch Super Retina HD (OLED) vs 6.1 inch Liquid Retina HD (LED)
One additional meter of water resistance depth (2m vs 1m)
Even longer battery life
3D Touch vs Haptic touch

It’s like buying a really good phone but then paying an extra $250 for the luxury and convenience of not also needing to carry a bulkier DSLR camera. You’re actually buying a camera that makes phone calls and enables you to have a mobile office. You have to ask yourself what you want and need in a pocket supercomputer capable of performing actual work tasks vs a camera that makes phone calls vs a phone that takes decent pictures.

$569 iPhone 7 Plus 32GB is still available through Apple unlocked. $349.99 iPhone SE is the lowest priced iPhone at the smallest size of 32 GB. Tips: • Go to Settings > tap your name at the top > iCloud > Find My iPhone > enable Send Last Location • Enroll in Family Sharing so you can see all members' devices using your own Apple ID• Add an alternate phone number of someone you trust and make sure you can access your Apple ID on their device. • Consider having your Apple ID login credentials stored in their password manager. Be sure to include answers to security questions or other pertinent details.• Use Lost Mode right away • Consider using Guided Access to lock your iPhone into the Find My iPhone app in the event you need to hand off your iPhone (depending on your level of trust in the situation)• If you power off your iOS device, you will not be able to locate it so consider leaving it in locked standby mode.• Keep the battery charged and be mindful of its status and the elements to which your device is exposed. To request help, swipe up from the bottom then LONG-press on Screen Recording icon in Control Center then be sure to select TeamViewer (it doesn’t SAY QuickSupport, it says TeamViewer with the QuickSupport icon. Next, tap Start Broadcast and send the link via Messages. A link will be texted and when tapped it will offer to open up the screen sharing session in the TeamViewer app.

Performance - Apple said that iOS 12 doubles down on performance. CPU performance now ramps up ‘instantly’ when needed, apps launch 40% faster, keyboard appears 50% sooner and slide to take photo is 70% quicker.
Siri shortcuts & lock-screen suggestions - Apple has long struggled with how to make Siri smarter without storing lots of personal data. Its new approach is to allow us to create our own Siri shortcuts, to access other apps, and to have Siri make proactive suggestions on the lockscreen, for example when it detects that you have started a workout.
Measure app and AR experiences - Almost as soon as ARKit was available, there were a bunch of third-party augmented reality tape measurement apps. Apple has now created its own, able to quickly and easily provide 3D measurements of objects seen by the camera.
Improvements to stock apps - Apple announced improvements to Apple Books, Apple News, Stocks and Voice Memos. Stocks and Voice Memos are also coming to iPad for the first time. The biggest overhaul is to the Books app (renamed from iBooks).
Third-party maps now available in CarPlay - If you prefer Google Maps or Waze to Apple Maps, you can now use those in CarPlay.
Three ways to tackle smartphone addiction - There’s been much talk of smartphone addiction over the past year or so, and Apple has responded with three ways to reduce the temptation to pick up your phone too frequently.1. A Do Not Disturb at Bedtime feature winds down notifications at night.2. Grouped notifications pull together all notifications from each app (for example, all Messages appear together).3. Screen Time allows adults to monitor their phone usage, and parents to set limits for kids.
Memoji personalized avatars - In addition to several new Animoji characters, Apple now allows you to create your own. Known as Memoji, the idea is that you can use a range of facial features – from hairstyle to glasses – to create an Animoji that looks something like you.
iPhone X gestures on iPad - Almost certainly in preparation for a new iPad with reduced bezels and an iPhone X style notch, iOS 12 now allows you to use iPhone X style gestures: swipe-up to return to the home screen, and swipe-down from top-right to open control center.
Face ID now recognizes two faces - While most iPhone X users say they would never want to switch back from Face ID to Touch ID, one complaint is that you can’t register more that one face. That will be even more important when the iPad adopts the technology, so Face ID can now recognize two faces.
Auto-fill of two-factor authentication texts - It’s currently a pain when you get a login code texted and have to exit the app, read the text, memorize or copy the code and then return to the app to type or paste it. iOS 12 spots when a text code has arrived and offers it as an autofill option with no need to exit the app.
Automatic iOS updates - It’s not yet 100% clear how this would work, but a toggle in Settings suggests that you’ll be able to configure your iPhone and iPad to automatically install iOS updates.
Closing iOS apps now easier on the iPhone X - iPhone X users can now quit apps in the same way as on earlier models. Once you’re in the app card view, you can simply swipe up on each app to close it, without the long-press required by iOS 11 on the iPhone X.

• Enable Siri & Search even if you turn off Siri for voice search because it’s really useful for looking people up on your iPhone to call them just by pulling down on the home screen

• Sort Order & Display Order: pick something and stick to it then change it on all your devices for consistency

• Short Name - helpful if you’re the type of person who uses a lot of nicknames

• My Info - very important to make sure this is set up properly; I see people adding a second contact card for themselves and making a mess of duplicates because of it; setting this up properly with all fields filled out helps to make filling out online forms less of a chore

• Default Account - this means when you create a new card, it will go to this account if you do not specify otherwise

• Another note on importing, iMazing is a handy app to have for importing contacts from an iOS device so you can better organize them on your Mac if you’re helping a family member, friend or colleague to get set up with their first iOS device PSA: Lots of seniors are getting Bluetooth Hearing Aids and some are feeling really disturbed by the phone ringing in their ears. Help your loved ones out with this if it’s become an issue. Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing and make the necessary adjustments.

Tips: Swiping left to delete a conversation or text from your listing of text messages in the Messages app now shows a confirmation message asking, “Would you like to delete this conversation?” and then shows the word Delete in red. This can be annoying for some despite it being there as a feature to protect people from accidentally deleting messages by swiping too quickly. We hope Apple will make this customizable in the future because now it’s just as easy to accidentally mute or “Hide” alerts from people when you didn’t mean to! This Apple Communities discussion explains it in more detail.

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary
This is handy if you’re experiencing an odd problem with the capitalization of wrong words as you type. It could be looking for names in your contacts list that are also words causing them to become automatically capitalized where it should not occur.

You can have multiple accounts that populate your Contacts listing. Be aware of which have been enabled because it could contribute to duplicates.
Create a separate Apple ID for the sole purpose of sharing a contact list with a partner, family member, or spouse. This way, you can use your main iCloud account for your own professional and personal contacts that are kept separate. Select contacts on a separate iCloud account can be shared and synchronized with those who access that designated account on their devices to collaborate with you. For example, family members will all have the same contact cards for grandparents, aunts, uncles, and close friends. If someone changes their address, one family member can edit the card and it will synchronize with everyone else.
Use the right tool for the job. A contact list is not the right tool for managing passwords. Do not store passwords or any important information in your contacts list notes because other apps you use may require access to your contacts database and will upload that information to their servers where a data breach could occur exposing that sensitive information. Use a dedicated password manager instead.
Instead of adding ICE (In Case of Emergency) to names, use the Medical ID feature in the Health app to add emergency contacts. First Responders know how to access the Medical ID from locked iPhones. Teach young children how to access this screen from a locked phone as well. It’s also how they’ll learn where they can dial the local emergency code (9-1-1 in the U.S.)

Messages in iCloud is still slated for a future release. It will likely show up as one of the apps you can toggle on or off in your iCloud settings.

Settings > Safari:

Autofill: We recommend using a password manager and doing the little bit of extra work required to interact with websites that require you to log in. Saving passwords in Safari on iOS is technically secure, but it enables complacency which can lead to insecure human behavior that hackers bank on.

Block Pop-ups: We do not recommend enabling this especially if you log into banking or medical website portals regularly. It has been known to cause those sites to malfunction. If you feel safer with it enabled, be sure you know how to disable it when a website does not respond.

Reading List > Automatically Save Offline: We recommend enabling this feature as it is really useful. If your device is older and has a small hard drive, know that this feature can eat up space over time.

• Melissa has an iPhone hack for connecting a lanyard to an iPhone case.

Thread a lanyard through the speaker cut-outs on the bottom of an iPhone case so that the iPhone hangs upside down with the glass facing outward. This way, it will be in the correct orientation when you pick up the phone to view the screen or snap a photo.

Plan for reduced Apple Watch battery life by downloading podcast episodes ahead of time then charging your watch before leaving to use it. If you don’t have Apple AirPods, the cheaper counterparts are not as easy to pair, so plan on having a set of Bluetooth earpieces that remain paired to your Apple Watch and keep them charged up. Plan on downloading your podcast episodes when you have time to devote to keeping the Apple Watch screen awake. The investment of time needed for getting the podcast episodes to your watch is worth it for how liberating it feels to not have to carry your iPhone around.

Dave concludes that HomePod is great for those who live fairly exclusively in the Apple ecosystem. If you are an Apple user with a discerning taste for sound, and this will be your first speaker, then go for it! The sound is amazing and the internal microphone recognition is uncontested. Unfortunately, there were more downsides than value for Dave to keep the HomePod. It could not compete with other devices that already suit Dave’s personal assistant needs. There is no Spotify or SiriusXM — it’s Apple Music all the way and will likely remain that way. You can’t make phone calls or manage your calendar from HomePod. As Melissa points out, it really doesn’t seem like it’s a family-friendly product at this time as there are no distinguished voices. While it may currently disappoint on features, the hardware is impeccably crafted giving it great potential to be more than just another assistant in a can. We think HomePod can only get better and we look forward to future iterations.

The Apple TV Remote app can be used to control one or more Apple TVs when both the devices and Apple TVs are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Multiple people in the same home and on the same network can control the Apple TV from their device. (You can set it to be locked with a code so that a local prankster can’t hijack the screen.)

Tips: Mirror your iPhone or iPad screen to your Apple TV to:

• share photos you took at an event with the family

• use an app like Paper or My blackboard for sketching out your ideas for all to see

Use and customize Control Center on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch — Apple

Put a shortcut to the Apple TV remote on your iPhone in the Control Center: Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls > tap the + sign to add Apple TV Remote. (Note: this does not work for Apple TVs prior to the 4th Generation. For older Apple TVs you must still use the app.)

Use Guided Access to lock the user into a single app or for using an iOS device in a kiosk to perform a specific task.

Melissa uses Guided Access as a parenting tool for her young children. She likes the ReColor app as a go-to.

Dave covers High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF) 

HEIF is the new image compression technique used by Apple in iOS 11 to reduce the size of photos you capture on your iPhone in a move to conserve storage space. Suppose you have a JPG photo with a 5 MB file size, it will be reduced to 2.6 – 3 MB, as a result of HEIF compression. With this technique, there’s no sacrifice on image quality at all, and that’s probably why Apple decided to implement this in the latest iOS version.

Keep checking your local listings because this is the time of year for those kinds of sales. iTunes Gift Card deals are the best way to reduce your costs on iCloud Storage Plans when you buy it at the yearly price in the form of iTunes credit. Apple will first charge your iTunes Gift Card credit before it charges your credit card on file, so keep it topped up and save with these annual sales.

Melissa’s new 2017 iPad was instrumental in helping to get iCloud Family Sharing set up because it runs iOS 11 which is required for administering a Family Sharing account. Some might view all she went through as a total nightmare, but she sees it as an opportunity to dissect how it all works and what might suit the needs of others.

Apple has a handy Apple Support app where you can get help from the comfort of your couch. They can run a remote diagnostic on your device and advise you on what steps to take in troubleshooting. Melissa recommends taking screenshots along the way to document the information.
