"Have you ever seen a dead body?" It was a haunting question that marked the beginning of a gruesome discovery inside the Smylie family home in Brandon, MS, in March of 2024. A beloved high school teacher was found shot dead, and her husband narrowly escaped with his own life. Amid the chaos that followed, Heath Smylie recognized the killer—but if not for the footage captured on a home security camera in the family’s kitchen, no one might have believed him…

Shortly after 5 a.m. on Sept. 10, 2012, three masked men wielding guns broke into a suburban home in Ocoee, Florida. The intruders dragged roommates Alex Zaldivar, 19, Brienna Campos, 20, and her brother Remington Campos, 23, from their beds and lay them face down on the living room floor. Minutes later, bullets were fired into each of the heads. The men fled. When the ringing in their ears subsided, Remington and Brienna Campos realized they had miraculously survived, but their friend did not. Alex Zaldivar lay motionless in a widening pool of his own blood. Who were these men and why were they trying to kill everyone inside? It would later be revealed one of the intruders had been in this house, uninvited, once before. He was facing serious prison time and saw only one solution: he had to kill the witnesses.
A special thanks to Rafael Zaldivar, who shared photos, videos and personal stories about his son, as well as retired Orlando Police Detective Michael Moreschi, who investigated the murder and provided an interview and information for this episode.

On December 7th, 2016, 22-year-old Jessica Seger had plans to visit her sister, 25-year-old Amanda Suarez, at her home in Okeechobee, Florida. When Jessica arrived at the home, she noticed something strange: the door was open. And what lay inside proved to be horrific, as her sister's body was set on the floor, posed and covered in blood. Along with the body was Amanda’s hysterical 2-year-old child. Jessica grabbed her nephew and ran up the block to call the police. In the ensuing investigation and interviews with family and friends, investigators compiled a small list of potential suspects. But it was only after the discovery of a single piece of evidence left behind by Amanda herself, that detectives were able to narrow it down to one prime suspect. On October 25th, 2018, staff at the California Men’s Colony Prison in San Luis Obispo noticed their beloved co-worker 64-year-old Athena Valentiny had not arrived at work. This absence prompted a wellness check, as was their standard procedure. But it was when two security guards tasked with checking up on Athena noticed her car was still parked in front of her home that they began to worry. To make matters worse, they noticed what appeared to be blood on her window shades. With Athena’s well being put into question, Grover Beach Police were dispatched and, to their horror, they found Athena viciously stabbed to death in her bedroom. As for who was responsible, there was a laundry list of potential suspects. But after some digging, investigators narrowed it down to one person, and with this discovery was a story, and a road trip, almost too far-fetched to be real.

In the mid-to-late 2010’s an individual operating under the pseudonym “master” allegedly began uploading several disturbing original photographs to various online gore forums on 4-Chan and Death Addict depicting the mutilation of deceased pre-term fetuses and infants. A hazmat coverall splash suit, elbow length surgical gloves, and a black leather BDSM bondage mask… Can you help solve a nearly decade long mystery?

Using the hashtag #Karen, his content soon went viral and Zachary Latham started gaining more followers. But when the lines become blurred between online personas and real life altercations, someone is bound to get hurt eventually…or even worse. In a case that would soon become controversial headline news across the nation, the very same devices used to upload video content to social media would inevitably capture a neighborhood dispute gone terribly wrong.

In May of 2019 a Pensacola, FL man’s badly decomposed body was discovered bound with duct tape and tightly wrapped in a tarp at the end of a desolate road next to an old mining sediment pond. The only potential clue left behind was a piece of scrap sheetrock, a bathroom tile, and a small length of orange nylon rope. All signs would inevitably point back to the man’s next-door neighbor. But would this quiet, good ‘ole Southern boy actually talk? And might there be more victims at the end of his twisted tale of lies?

In 1996, 17-year-old Aaron Stark of Denver, CO had made up his mind. He was going to become a school shooter. Before the days of Columbine, there weren’t metal detectors at every entrance or armed community services officers standing guard in American schools. In fact, it was relatively easy for a kid to bring a gun to school. Aaron had it all planned out. He knew exactly how he was going to get the weapon and in his mind, there was no turning back. But ultimately that is exactly what he did. We had a chance to speak with Aaron…and not from his prison cell, but instead on a Zoom call from the comfort of his own home.

Some of the darkest corners of America are places most of us are fortunate enough to stay away from. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Far too many individuals are born into colliding worlds of addiction, sex trafficking, and violence. A lot of those people will never have a chance at a better life. Many won’t even make it out alive. Others however… do get that rare opportunity to try again. Britnee Blair, who now identifies as Samantha Haynes, is one of those lucky few…but the story of how she made it out and got to the other side is an ugly one. She spares no details of the horrific things she’s seen and done herself during this one of a kind, eye-opening interview.

We’re faced with choices every day. Most are trivial and underwhelming to the point we don’t realize they’re even choices at all. Getting gas, whether or not to order take out, or the ever infamous quandary: “should I go to the gym?” There does, however, come those times when we’re forced to make more profound decisions…the type that could very well alter the trajectory of our future. We sat down for an interview with artist, public speaker, educator, and activist Blackliq. While he has achieved much in the entertainment space, his music was not the main topic of discussion. Instead, he told us exclusively and for the 1st time publicly, about the day a homicide detective showed up at his work back in 2004, informing him that his father was being charged with 1st degree murder.

Lyndon McLeod was your typical controversial online troll. He was loud, provocative, and identified as a quote, “Shiva-the-destroyer archetype who likes to watch shit burn.” He also happened to be an author. His 4,485 page self-published 3-part work entitled “Sanction” began to gain some traction online with the help of his dark and outlandish marketing tactics… but one supporter of the writer’s Patreon eventually realized the book wasn't a fictional tale. When warnings fell on deaf ears… when no one listened to threats that inevitably turned out to be true - the city of Denver, CO would be met with a brand of devastation well beyond anyone’s worst nightmares.

Most of us are at least peripherally familiar with the story of John Meehan, a.k.a the infamous “Dirty John,” the con-artist who terrorized women across the United States. But when the news broke of what happened to John during his final moments, the infamy surrounding his abusive escapades strangely led to several international TV deals, docuseries, and was even the basis for some of the most successful investigative true-crime podcasts ever created. Fortunes were made as a result of his long history of domestic violence and abuse, but the victims of the traumatic events were of the few who never saw a substantial pay day. In this episode we interview Terra Newell - the woman who finally put an end to the despicable “Dirty John.” She provides an eye opening look inside the strangest kind of limelight, discusses ethics and monetization in true crime, and explains what life’s really like after being involved in a homicide that captivated the world.

“Respect your elders.” It’s something we’ve all heard since we were young. Albert Flick, a 76-year-old US Army veteran from Westbrook, Maine fit the precise mold of the type of individual we’re expected to revere. You’d never know based on appearance alone that this man had an extremely dark & violent past. When a judge gave Mr. Flick another chance at life after years in and out of prison for violent crimes, he started over in a new town where no one knew of his past…but allowing this elderly man to walk free proved to be one of the most costly & deadly mistakes the state of Maine could have ever made.

“Why didn’t she just leave?” This is a question usually proposed by the uninformed. Individuals unaware of just how difficult and dangerous it is for victims of domestic violence to get out of their toxic relationship. It’s never that simple and everyone’s situation is different. A young school teacher by the name of Amber Guichelaar was one of these women. She wanted to get out and almost did. A tragedy that was first reported as an accident, would turn out to be much more than that. When detectives found letters Amber had left behind, they would finally reveal the truth of what really happened.

In 2017, just days after Thanksgiving, a 25-year-old woman from Keystone Heights, FL mysteriously disappeared. Authorities wasted no time in launching their search efforts, as this wasn’t the average missing person case. Jordan Cooper was severely intellectually challenged and had never been left alone for more than a few hours. She was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt at her house on Payne Road. As law enforcement questioned her family with a suspiciously checkered past, they failed to look toward one individual who had been hiding in plain sight the entire time…

Liberty University lacrosse player Chad Gurney seemingly had it all: good looks, popularity, and an active love life. But a freak auto accident in 2005 left him with permanent physical and psychological impairments. After moving back to his hometown near Portland, ME - friends recalled something seeming off about Chad, claiming that he was, “never quite the same since the accident.” In May of 2009, the now tattooed man everyone seemed to be warning young girls about finally snapped, committing one of Maine’s most gruesome murders. In August of 2015, 40-year-old Vermont mother Jody Herring lost custody of her three children after a tumultuous battle with substance abuse. Born into a horrific family history of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, Herring’s mental health began to show clear signs of deterioration as she promised that an “Armageddon” was nearing. On the morning of August 7th, she did the unthinkable. Herring took a .270 hunting rifle from a former lover and set out with a hit list, which included people she viewed as somehow personally responsible for her own neglectful actions. Jody Herring’s August Armageddon united members of her own family and the Vermont Department of Children and Families in tragedy through one of the state's most horrific spree killings.

When a local legend just so happens to be your father, you’re able to get away with more than you most, including just about everything except for murder.

Chicago is the 3rd most populated city in the United States. It’s an easy place to get lost...or hide, if you’re a criminal. In 2017, Northwestern Professor & microbiologist Wyndham Lathem was secretly planning a crime from behind his computer keyboard. Dr. Lathem was the last person anyone would have ever suspected of committing murder...until an anonymous phone call was made to the front desk of his luxury apartment building. The mysterious voice on the other end told the receptionist, “There may have been a crime committed in room 1004...You need to check it out.” Once police gained access, they were met with a horrific & bloody scene...but the man whom the Chicago condo belonged to, Wyndham Lathem,...was already long gone.

During the early morning hours on March 29th, 2019, 21-year-old Samantha Josephson, a student at the University of South Carolina, was out with friends in the Five Points district of Columbia. Although her friends were looking to spend a night out on the town, Samantha wanted to call it a night early and ordered an Uber home shortly after 2 a.m. When the car arrived, she notified her boyfriend Greg that she was heading home. She then got into a black Chevy Impala and departed from Five Points district. But Greg, who was able to track Samantha’s phone, noticed that she was heading in the opposite direction of her apartment - and shortly thereafter, was disconnected altogether from the app and unable to see her location. The next day Greg and Samantha’s friends all realized that she had actually never made it home that morning and soon everyone would soon learn the horrific truth - the Uber that Samantha Josephson got into… was no Uber at all.

Ronald Lee Haskell, a 34-year-old man raised in a devout Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints family, was conditioned and committed to follow his predestined role as “man of the house” upon his eventual marriage. When he took sentiments of the Mormon Church’s ideology too far however, things quickly turned violent. Melannie Kaye Lyon, Ron’s wife - knew she had to get out - yet found herself stuck between the familial roles established by the church and the destructive clutches of her abuser. Most knew her husband Ron as jovial, fun loving, and amicable on the exterior... but behind closed doors, he was everything but. Melannie would finally break free from Ron and file for divorce with the support of her extended family, but not without consequence. Ron Haskell eventually sought vengeance from 6 innocent members of the Stay family in a multi-state rampage that seemingly shocked everyone but those who actually knew him closest.

In 2011 the Capital Gazette daily newspaper out of Annapolis, Maryland published a revealing exposé on the dangers of social media entitled, “Jarrod Wants to Be Your Friend.” The piece recounted one man’s relentless cyber harassment of a former high school acquaintance through Facebook. Though the article was originally intended to warn readers of the false sense of intimacy social media provides people we may not actually know - it quickly snowballed into something much worse. After 7 years of detailed threats of violence and a defamation lawsuit against the Capital Gazette, Jarrod W. Ramos finally took his war of words beyond the computer screen and into the newspaper offices at 888 Bestgate Road on June 28th, 2018 - in one of the state’s most horrific mass killings.

We rarely see the critical warning signs of someone suffering from a debilitating mental illness until the symptoms have entirely consumed the individual to the point of noticeable change or decline. 26 year-old Buckey Wolfe of Seattle, WA was one of these people. His escalating reclusion & his growing obsession with the dark corners of the internet compounded his sickness. There were surely warning signs that Buckey Wolfe was becoming unhinged, but when he began falling down the endless rabbit hole of internet conspiracy theories, Buckey believed he was personally under attack. This perceived “targeted individual” sadly would never make it back to reality...and his unraveled manic behavior was broadcast to YouTube for all the world to see. Right up until he decided he was sent by God to save the world, using none other than his weapon of choice - a 3 foot long Samurai sword.

The school bus is usually a mode of transportation we associate with the word “safe.” Most of our memories riding the school bus as youth are attributed to laughs, field-trips, & fun- but for some kids, the school bus doesn’t represent any of those things. For a select unlucky few, the school bus represents something much worse. A darkness that most of us will never be able to fully comprehend. Yet, the children aboard school bus 0-42 in Midland City, AL back in 2013 are among those who certainly do know what it's like to be a target of a random, violent crime. These children know what it's like to have their lives put in extreme danger, unexpectedly, while riding that big yellow machine. The savage act that happened inside the 24,000lb transporter holding 10+ kids would come out of nowhere, by the hands of one crazed neighbor. A person locals only knew only as, “mean man,”...when he stormed the bus just after 3 p.m. with a handwritten list of demands, a fist full of zip ties, and a loaded 9mm handgun...

On November 18th, 2012, 13-year-old Dylan Redwine traveled to Durango, Colorado for a court ordered visit with his father. After getting off of the plane, Dylan’s father Mark told the young teenager he had to run errands early the next morning. This prompted Dylan to make plans to meet with a friend early in the morning before his dad left the house. When Mark awoke the next morning, Dylan was still asleep on the couch, but when he returned home, his son was nowhere to be found. All calls and texts to his son went unanswered, and his friends stated they hadn’t seen or heard from Dylan. As the hours passed, Mark became increasingly concerned as he lived in a rugged, mountainous area. The days quickly turned into weeks and eventually months, until Dylan’s remains were recovered on a rural mountain road just 8 miles from his father’s home. After his death was ruled a homicide, investigators were made aware that the young teenager had discovered and confronted his father about some compromising information his brother had found on the computer the year prior. But was this allegedly devout father really willing to kill his son over his dirty little secret?

On Christmas Eve of 2013, Patricia Burns of Lake Luzerne, NY would face the wrath of her crazed ex-husband - a violent offender she had been trying to evade for years. When Clifford Burns, a man with failed aspirations of once becoming a U.S. Marine, decided to go hunting dressed in full camouflage, his targets would not be sitting ducks or deer in the Adirondack Mountains. Instead, his prey would be his own daughters & estranged wife when he came barging through their front door armed with a long serrated blade and a thirst for revenge over what he viewed as unfair child support practices.

(Part 2/2) No one lives forever. We’re all familiar with the cliché, “life is short.” But have you ever wondered just exactly how short? Have you ever considered the manner in which you might leave this earth when it’s your time to go? Death by fire, drowning, or being shot & killed are only some of the greatest fears held by many that have contemplated their own mortality. It’s very rare that these worst case scenarios will ever play out in real life...but the frightening truth is, that they sometimes do. In August of 2015, 31 year-old ex-beauty queen Judy Malinowski would be a victim of such unexpected & horrific events...when she was burned alive by her abusive boyfriend at a Speedway gas station in Gahanna, OH. Death is inevitable for all of us...but when drugs, homelessness, & domestic violence are the major components of an individual’s environment...one can only hope they’re able to make it out, before it’s too late…
**Trigger Warning** This case includes graphic depictions of domestic violence and murder. If you or someone you know are experiencing domestic abuse or violence. Get help. Call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

In July of 2013, 59 year-old Charles Parker and his wife, 51 year-old Gretchen Parker, were found brutally murdered inside their Jonesville, South Carolina home. Police couldn’t seem to make sense of who might want the couple dead... until researching their backgrounds. A lot of us have skeletons in our closets- some darker than others- but the secrets Charles Parker was hiding were beyond anyone’s comprehension. They say the past will always come back to haunt you...but it’s the person, or “persons” who came to meet the Parker’s at their own front door that would leave police speechless... and the small rural Union County community reeling in a storm of deceit, murder, and corruption.

On July 30, 2008, 38-year-old unemployed Army veteran Scott J. Johnson sexually assaulted a 24-year-old woman off a remote bike path in the woods of East Kingsford, MI. Along the Menominee River, teetering the Michigan/Wisconsin border, Johnson aggressively forced himself upon his unwilling victim, but the sexual assault committed that afternoon was only the precursor for one man’s murderous reign of terror. Scott Johnson changed the lives of several families in an instant - when he appeared from the wooded forest as if out of nowhere, dressed in full camouflage army fatigues while brandishing a semi-automatic rifle at a group of teenagers swimming by an old, abandoned train bridge.

On October 20, 2007, just outside of Toronto’s city limits, 26 year old Brett Ryan would rob his first bank. Disguised in hospital bandages, he handed the teller a note that read “Stay calm. I have a gun in the sling,” referencing the fake arm cast he wore, fastened from a strap around his neck. This is the story of a seemingly average college student that had every opportunity to reach true success in life, but was only interested in taking shortcuts in order to get there. Brett Ryan was unwilling to accept a life of mediocrity and was willing to do anything it took to portray a lap of luxury that he never truly earned... but how long can one person keep up with living a lie? Ryan became so obsessed with creating the persona of a successful young professional that he eventually became unable to differentiate reality from his fantasy. They say “the truth will set you free,” but Brett Ryan was a prisoner of his own mind...and the steel trap of secrets he so desperately tried to keep locked away would eventually be exposed, by his own family.

New Bedford, MA - or, “The Whaling City,” is a quaint fishing town that is one of the most multicultural & diverse in the United States. With large Portuguese, Black, and several other various ethnic communities occupying the close knit neighborhoods, New Bedford would be the last place anyone would expect to witness a horrifically violent hate crime. Yet in 2006, that’s exactly what its residents would be forced to endure. 18-year-old Jacob Robida walked into a New Bedford gay bar armed with a pistol, knife, and a hatchet- tucked in his belt, under is black hooded sweatshirt. This is the tale of an anger-fueled loner, influenced by ideologies of homophobia, racism, and violent music.

The world of Esports (“Electronic Sports”) has become one of the fastest growing communities of our lifetime. Professional video game tournaments clock in over 500 million views from the biggest competitions on streaming platforms such as YouTube and Twitch. But what happens when something goes wrong at one of these events and the whole world is watching, live? No one could have anticipated the horrors that would unfold mid-day, at an unsuspecting video game bar in Jacksonville, Florida. Yet, in a world that demands instant internet gratification, fastest upload speeds, and 4K game play... perhaps we should be careful what we wish for. We often overlook the isolated environment in which gamers subject themselves to. It’s easy to miss very real mental-health warning signs when enthralled and caught up in the realm “virtual reality.” When we fail to recognize these signals, how do the repercussions of one man’s actions affect our safety? When gunshots rang out over the livestream on August 26, 2018 - broadcasting live to hundreds of viewers during a professional Madden tournament, everyone ran for their lives. This is a deep dive into the mind of one desperate gamer, lost in his delusions. David Katz was willing to do anything it took to prove he was the best- even if that meant taking the lives of innocent people to get there.

Wayne Williams was convicted of the murders of two young adults in 1982, supposedly bringing an end to the reign of terror of the “Atlanta Monster.” But the cases of at least 27 other missing or murdered African American children were abruptly closed in the aftermath of his conviction, leaving the surviving families with little peace, and no semblance of closure. We spoke with three of the Directors of HBO’s new series, “Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children” - about their experience creating the new groundbreaking series, and what new light they hope to shed on the now 40-year-old cases. Their investigation uncovered shocking details of evidence tampering, perjury, and widespread cover-up at the highest levels of government and law enforcement.
Special thanks to award-winning Directors Sam Pollard, Maro Chermayeff, and Joshua Bennett for participating in this episode.

The nearly unidentifiable remains of an 18-year old woman are found burning behind a middle school in Mayfield, KY in 2000. The lead investigator fumbles the crime scene, ignoring vital clues and eventually focusing exclusively on one primary suspect. A judge ultimately dismissed the case, condemning the police work as problematic from the start. Justice seemed out of reach - until an amateur detective set up a Myspace tribute page and hit the streets herself to track down the real suspect.

In what some have called the worst case of child abuse in Los Angeles County history, 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez suffered prolonged torture at the very hands of those entrusted to protect him. Early reports alleged his death was accidental. But the investigation would quickly reveal a much darker, more evil series of events that would ultimately shake the cracked foundation of the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services to its core. A BB gun, a belt, and a small cupboard were just the beginning of Gabriel’s proverbial house of horrors.
