With a catalogue as extensive as INXS’, there was bound to be moments in time when certain songs captured the zeitgeist attention of the music buying public and critics.
Look no further than January 28th, 1988 when a humble hard working sextet from Australia hit number one on the Billboard Charts with Need You Tonight. A song, that now, sounds so familiar, crisp and radio friendly but then, a new modern twist on funk, soul and pop with sound production so cutting edge, every breath, ooh and aah sounded like Michael Hutchence was singing it to you directly from your living room. Combined with an innovative, breathtaking and cutting edge video clip, Need you Tonight put INXS into the stratosphere of superstardom and success. MTV awards ensued, world tours were booked and the album Kick had the necessary momentum to spawn 4 subsequent hit singles and international acclaim.
Five years later in February 1993, a less prominent and commercially successful track was released as the fifth single to Welcome to Wherever You are, namely Beautiful Girl. A self-penned track by Andrew Farriss as an ode to new fatherhood, this restrained, mellow and resonant song showcased a maturity, subtlety and consciousness to both the INXS writing and recording process. Charting steadily if not spectacularly, the film clip by Mark Pellington of U2 and Pearl Jam fame would garner a Grammy nomination for Best Video of the Year losing out to Peter Gabriel’s “Steam” clip. That aside, the social conscious messaging of the clip resonated nicely with the lyrical content whilst Michael’s channeling of Lou Reed, circa The Velvet Underground era only added to its worthiness.
So sit back and reminisce as we step back in time and honour two distinct but two important songs in the INXS catalogue that still resonate 37 and 32 years later respectively.

With the passage of time, many in the INXS fan community and wider musical world have had to accept that this great Australian icon of entertainment shall never grace us with his presence again.
With numerous tears shed, we like to look at January 22nd each year as a day of celebration. A day when in 1960, Michael Kelland Hutchence entered the world and changed life as many know it. A singer, a friend, a brother, a bandmate, a Father and a beacon of light for his peers.
So in today’s episode of INXS: Access all Areas, we revisit a special past episode from way back to episode 88 where we pay homage to the immense contribution Michael had on all of those around him.
We miss you Michael!

INXS: Access all Areas steps back into the Time Machine in this latest episode where we interview the wonderful Mal Walker from Guiness, the prequel band to INXS from the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Full of insightful anecdotes and unique moments in time, Mal recounts the early days when Tim, Kirk and Garry collaborated and set out on their musical journey with ambition, work ethic and inspiring drive.
Mal shares fascinating moments when the band got to record at ABC Studios, a venue INXS would go on to use on many occasions in the future plus the crossover circumstances of another pre INXS outfit, namely Dr Dolphin. Effusive in his praise for Tim, Kirk and Garry, it came as no surprise to him to see them reach the summit of the global music scene, hence was their inner commitment to making it work.
Without a hint of professional jealousy or envy, Mal shares the songs and albums INXS would go on to record & release as his desert island classics! The sense of brotherhood, respect and passion in Mal’s words resonates throughout this episode and we think this is a “not to be missed episode” where listeners can go back to a more innocent, simple but meaningful time when art, ambition and the stars aligned in a perfect way.

It’s that solemn date 0f 22/11 again where we pay homage and respect to the dearly departed Michael Hutchence who left us 27 years ago today.
Forever in our hearts and the forefront of our minds, we’d like to do something a little different this year. Instead of hearing from Bee, myself, the INXS fan cohort, band mates and friends, we thought a montage of rare, known and classic Michael interviews would be welcome.
Once again, we can be reminded of his fantastic talking voice, articulate thoughts and unique take on INXS place in the musical sphere.
So close your eyes, open your heart and ears and enjoy the dulcet spoken words of a long lost, but still loved icon that is Michael Kelland Hutchence.

INXS: Access all Areas bring to you the most difficult of episodes since our Michael Hutchence funeral episode as we tackle Part Two of the Never Tear Us Apart Mini-Series circa 2014. That part of the INXS journey where Director Daina Reid tackles the wilderness years and unraveling of the band dynamic. Exhilarated but humbled by conquering the UK and European market culminating with the legendary Wembley gig in July 1991, INXS faced an undeserved and unwarranted backlash from their homeland. Episode two captures this and the ensuring dramas associated with trying to remain artistically and commercially relevant in a fast changing musical world with grunge, the Manchester scene and hip hop suddenly dominating the airwaves.
This episode manages to capture a band still producing creative and daring material amidst the pressures of fame, family, relationships and Manager pressures and expectations. But with commercial appeal waning and the band members scattered throughout the globe, we get a “warts and all” account from the inside as to the difficulty many bands face when attempting to keep the machine rolling along.
This episode respectfully deals with the obvious “elephant in the room” be it November 22nd, 1997 whilst criss-crossing time periods allowing the audience to appreciate the many decisions, compromises, struggles, sacrifices and commitment, INXS had to make during their career. As the show veers from re-creation into real spliced footage of the band traversing the world whist conquering countries, audiences, hearts and minds. Unabashedly and emotionally charged in more ways than one, we permit you to open up your soul and be proud of this Australian sextet who left an indelible footprint on the world.

This Week’s Episode: Behind the Scenes of Creative Vandal We’re beyond excited to bring you a special episode featuring an exclusive interview with Peter Pahor, the brilliant director behind Creative Vandalism, the award-winning documentary on our friend and podcast mentor, Nick Egan.
Nick’s journey with INXS started with a shared love of music and a friendship with Michael Hutchence back in the mid-‘80s. That connection paved the way for some of the band’s most iconic visuals, including the unforgettable Kick album cover, which continues to define the INXS legacy. But Nick’s influence didn’t stop there—his creative genius took him on an impressive path, working with legendary artists like Duran Duran, Bob Dylan, Oasis, and Alanis Morissette, just to name a few.
We’re proud to take a deep dive into how this documentary came to life, as Peter reveals the stories, inspirations, and behind-the-scenes moments that make Creative Vandalism a true masterpiece. So sit back, relax, and join us as we uncover the magic behind the making of this gem!

After 4.5 years, INXS: Access all Areas reaches a special milestone of 200 episodes and what better way to celebrate than commemorate the Mini Series: Never Tear Us Apart starting with a deep dive into Part One. The episode that we coined “The Ascent” where we see the band climb from humble beginnings to the career zenith of Wembley 1991.
With impeccable casting and production values from Endemol Shine Australia, this iconic mini series launched on Australian TV on Sunday February 9th, 2014 and concluded the following week on February 16th to record ratings for the Channel 7 network.
Filmed in Melbourne Australia with a cast of known but not overtly famous actors, Director Daina Reid elicits heartfelt and acute performances particularly from industry veteran Damon Herriman whose portrayal of INXS Manager Chris Murphy may be the shrewdest casting in many years.
With a swathe of songs representing INXS’ early career success in Australia, fans and the less initiated are taken into a heady and nostalgic period when music and gigs were the soundtrack and vehicle for youth culture and entertainment.
Additionally, we get to see the work ethic, commitment and sacrifice of an emerging band who had the courage to leave the safety and earnings potential of Australian shores and “risk it all” by tackling the behemoth that was America. Inspiring, endearing, passionate and purposeful, go back and watch with fresh eyes and ears before listening to this podcast!!
A big thank you to everyone that sent in their thanks to add this episode hearing From Tim and Andrew Farriss, Leigh Francis, our wonderful friends and patrons but not forgetting Nick Egan celebrating our achievements with a firework ending. We love you all.

Forever the creative soul, Michael Hutchence was born to be more than just a lead singer of an international rock band. From the early days, Michael embraced the theatrical possibilities of music video and was at the forefront in ensuring INXS songs captured a visual vibrancy and vitality.
As such, in today’s episode we dive deep into the critical performances that shaped and piqued Michael’s acting urges commencing in 1982 when Michael joined forces with iconic Cold Chisel songwriter, Don Walker in contributing to the seminal 1982 Australian film Freedom with two tracks and one video, notably Speed Kills that showcases a 21 year old Michael. The next 4 years were committed to INXS’ global ascent via albums Shabooh Shabaah, The Swing and Listen Like Thieves, plus the relentless touring attached to these triumvirate recordings. So, it took till 1986 for Michael to clear his schedule when the opportunity came up to star in Richard Lowenstein’s Dogs in Space came up. A movie that embraced the punk leanings of shared living suburbia amidst musical graft, this iconic art house movie has endured and influenced generations of fans and filmmakers over 38 years, despite its middling box office performance at the time.
Fast forward 4 years later post the juggernaut albums and tours that were Kick and X, Michael scratched a lifelong itch portraying famed British poet Percy Shelly, by joining Bridget Fonda, John Hurt, Jason Patric and Raul Julia in legendary Hollywood Director Roger Corman’s last ever picture “Frankenstein Unbound”. A true passion piece and one that Michael embraced with unyielding commitment and joy.
Finally, Michael portrayed a Record Executive mogul in the underwhelming indie feature “Limp” that despite its problems, aroused the attention of both Michael Douglas’ and Quentin Tarantino’s production companies with speculation of future projects in the offing.
Unfortunately, Michael’s untimely passing thwarted what may have led a promising acting career into a burgeoning one. What is known, Michael possessed a charisma, a stare and a glare amidst an inner drive and creativity to succeed and express. One can only imagine what more he could have achieved in this space.

After deep diving on INXS’ 2010 Original Sin Album last week, we take a detailed look at the album’s legacy, the influence of Chris Murphy on the band during this period and some of the exciting tour/setlists performances that accompanied this album release.
Having seen the band perform at Day on the Green at Rockford Estates Melbourne, Victoria in February 2011, the setlist provides an interesting backdrop to the sounds and styles of the album in a real time “live setting” with support bands including Train, Baby Animals and The Models.
The influence of Chris Murphy rejoining the band again in a creative and supporting role cannot be underestimated. He took the pressure and burden off the remaining 5 members of INXS to prove their worth and bona fides. Rather, he instilled faith and direction in the band to embrace their past, thrust their catalogue and pursue a band to brand strategy that inspired the band to look back and re-record the tracks that ended up being the Original Sin Album.
With a jam packed news section, tribute song for the ages and a whole lot more, we present to you another vital episode of INXS: Access all Areas.

Having completed nearly 200 gigs with JD Fortune via the Switch Album Tour over 2006-2007, INXS took a much needed break in 2008 to recharge the batteries and contemplate further new chapters in their career post Michael Hutchence.
Amidst, a temporary falling out with JD, the band reunited with long term Manager Chris Murphy after a 14 year hiatus from band duties. With a renewed focus to move the band to a brand, the bank found inner inspiration when jamming in the studio during 2009 deconstructing old songs with new arrangements.
As such, the idea to re-record some well known and unique deep cut INXS tracks was born with the idea of inviting select singers, DJ’s and world music artists to lend a hand. A unique initiative rarely taken by a band and one normally reserved for tribute acts.
With Jon Farriss and James Ash (Rogue Traders Founder) spearheading the production duties, the band put together an ambitious, creative and artistically successful album that avoided being a simple rehash or rebooting of existing soundscapes.
With guest contributors including Ben Harper, Rob Thomas, Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe), Pat Monahan (Train) and Nikka Costa, the album manages to incorporate modern production, excellent musicianship and soaring vocal performances imbuing a sense of celebration and admiration for INXS’ songs.
The album undoubtedly did in 2010 and now in 2024 challenge ardent, stoic and rusted on fans whose ears may be permanently etched to the sounds of the original songs, however as we have said on many occasions, “listen without prejudice” and you’ll be in for a rare musical experience.
we also have a poll running on our Facebook page. So cast your votes on your top 5 songs off this album there.
Love and peace ✌️

Occasionally a song comes along that sits sedately surrounded by more spectacular songs but somehow over the journey of time reveals itself sonically, lyrically and emotionally within our hearts and minds. That’s the story of INXS’ masterpiece “The Stairs” from 1990’s X album.
After the one, two punch of Suicide Blonde and Disappear, both which climbed into the Billboard Top 10 Charts, The Stairs subtly and gradually provides a moment of introspective reflection in urban living amongst the masses and social alienation. With a contemplative introduction devoid of lyrics and full band interaction until the 80th second, INXS (according to Michael Hutchence) commit to a songwriting process and pathway that was to this point, their most ambitious recording. Absent was the traditional intro, verse, chorus, verse outro song structure with a greater emphasis on lyrical resonance and escalation.
With a passioned vocal by Michael and a film clip that supports the lyrical themes of isolation and lack of community connection, INXS create a soundscape, lyric and message that some 34 years later has current day meaning in this online heavy but community lacking world. Having done deep dive episodes on more prominent singles such as What you Need, Never tear us Apart, Don’t Change, Burn for You and The One Thing, we are proud to share a unique deep cut that has only blossomed and grown in the hearts, minds and souls of true INXS fans since 1990.

Today, we examine the remaining 6 tracks from studio album 11, from INXS’ Switch recording that as discussed on the previous episode, showcased a new era for the band.
With a variety of band member contributions, side 2 highlighted a distinct set of sounds, sonics and lyrics with the band exploring a more creative process.
Opening proceedings with a unique Co-write between ex New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander, Annie Roboff (Indigo Girls) and Andrew Farriss, we see INXS broaden their traditional sound with a bunch an assortment of ballads, mid tempo rock tracks, reggae and four to the floor synth rock anthems (Hungry). It highlights Andrew Farriss previous years traveling the globe seeking lyrical inspiration and song craft partnerships that was lost with Michael’s unfortunate passing.
The fruits of these travels is more than reflected in the final recordings. With a punchy, but effective news section update and some auction/raffle announcements, we also share news on an exciting former guest who’ll be re-appearing on episode 192.

With INXS refreshed and revitalized post Rock Star INXS, the band entered the Westlake Studios in Los Angeles, California. With a brand new front man, JD Fortune to record and mix their 11th studio release aptly named Switch, further mixing was completed both at MixStar Studios at Virginia Beach, Virginia and Sphere Studios in London, UK.
Nearly 8.5 years since their final recording with Michael Hutchence on Elegantly Wasted, the band wasted no time between September-November 2005 laying down 11 tracks that would represent the dawn of a new era for the band and be the precursor to a World Tour in 2006.
Produced by Guy Chambers, formerly with World Party and main Co-Writer with Robbie Williams, he and Andrew Farriss were able to unite and combine for an album that sounded fresh, vital, progressive but with that typical INXS DNA underpinning its sound and sonics.
Today, we examine Side One’s 5 tracks spearheaded by the international hits that were Pretty Vegas and Afterglow whilst also discussing the narrative, expectations and experiences of other rock bands that have lost front man over their careers whether it be by departure or unfortunate passing.
So as the famous line from George Michael’s second album denoted, “listen without prejudice” and revel in a time when INXS challenged themselves, the critics and the wider fan base with a new singer, sound and a bunch of songs that heralded a new era for them!

What is a hook, I can hear you say? A hook is a musical idea, often a short riff, passage or phrase, that is used in music to make a song appealing and to catch the ear of the listener. With over 250 songs recorded, narrowing down a list to only 10 each was a daunting task.
That aside, our final lists unearth some interesting gems, deep cuts, predictable favourites and a few unexpected left turns making the whole exercise, a fun and rewarding experience.
With a jam packed news, an ode to birthday boy Kirk Pengilly and some new competitions launched, we urge you to tune in to your only 100% weekly dedicated INXS podcast!

As we put a bow around our three part series on Rock Star INXS, we breakdown the Top Ten Reels from the show that highlighted the strengths and joys of the show that still resonate 19 years after airing. Unlike many reality shows that were steeped in manipulation, occasional humiliation and cheesy contrived antics, Rock Star INXS in 2005 was a breath of fresh air insofar as allowing contestants to develop their talent, thrive in musical clinics and perform to a band judging panel that were educated, empathetic and 100% versed in the task at hand.
With a catalogue of artists and songs from icons such as the Beatles, the Stones, the Police, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Alanis Morissette, The Who and Living Colour, the contestants were able to draw inspiration from these classic songs whilst showcasing their talent to the world. That being said, today we count down, share and relive the 10 most memorable moments that made Rock Star INXS, despite its critics, a worthy and exciting chapter in the post Michael era. Plus providing the band with a renewed platform to continue doing what they loved doing, making and playing fantastic music.
Finally, we give a massive shoutout to the incomparable Garry Gary Beers who turns 67 this week and we share some exciting news regarding Andrew Farriss’ new single and video in our bumper news section.
So do yourself a huge favour and tune into the only 100% weekly dedicated podcast that is INXS: Access all Areas.

As we welcome Bee back from her European travel escapades, INXS: Access all Areas roars back with a vengeance as we continue the Rock Star INXS theme with a forensic deep dive into the birth of the Billboard Charting hit Pretty Vegas.
Commencing as a contestant activity, Andrew Farriss and Dave Navarro commissioned two teams to go away and write melodies and lyrics to a bed of music created by Andrew and the band. What follows is one of the most interesting and out there sliding doors moments whereby JD Fortune goes “psychotically clever” (according to rival Marty Casey) and constructs his own version outside group directive
In addition, we are launching a brand new segment that shall allow any current or future patron to participate on any forthcoming episode with an emphasis on past concerts performed by INXS during their 1977-2012 live career.
With a bumper NEWS section and a renewed vigour, this long awaited episode is not to be missed!!!

Episode 186: Welcome to Rockstar INXS
In December 2004 INXS announced the bold move to enter the “Reality TV” world with the global media release of Rockstar INXS. A talent identification based competition filmed and released via CBS, VH1 and affiliates aiming to find INXS’ new lead singer.
In this episode, we discuss the backdrop behind this announcement, the format of the show, the motivations for INXS/Management going down this pathway amidst various anecdotes from this period as we set up one of the most fascinating and risky periods of INXS’ career.
As a framework setup to subsequent episodes, Rockstar INXS despite some of its critics was able to bring rock n roll and fantastic classic songs back into the mainstream audiences globally with songs from Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Killers and many others front and center amongst the contestants. With excellent production values from the king of reality tv, Mark Burnett, credible hosting duties by Jane’s Addiction’s lead guitarist Dave Navarro and compering by the stunning Brooke Burke, Rockstar INXS managed to remind and probe older fans and new millennials what a force INXS were and could be despite the tragic loss of their original frontmen, Michael Hutchence.
With Bee in the UK for 4 weeks, our team has set you some “enjoyable homework” and that being to hit up YouTube, watch all 32 episodes and relive with fresh eyes and ears plus without prejudice the drama, the twists and the turns that were Rockstar INXS.

Releasing this episode on our 4th Anniversary; we are beyond excited to have a special and featured guest on today’s episode of INXS: Access all Areas. Jon Lamoreaux from The Hustle Podcast, based in Denver Colorado has created over 470 episodes of fantastic music deep dive content over the last 9 years to critical acclaim.
The original driving inspiration behind Haydn creating this INXS podcast with Bee, Jon’s musical passion, love of Australian/New Zealand artists and fantastic dulcet tones has resulted in nearly a million downloads since its inception creating hours upon hours of interesting content that has brought listening pleasure to thousands.
Today we join forces to discuss the DNA of the Australasian music scene and how a band like INXS were able to take the mantle from iconic “live acts” that preceded them such as The Angels, AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Dragon, Midnight Oil and Split Enz to name just a few. What was this notion called “grit” that permeated all of these acts to perform to such truly high levels and meant the public/concert goers were given blistering, raw and pulsating performances up close and personal every time.
We talk about INXS’ place in history, their Rock n Roll Hall of Fame prospects plus what musically they meant to an ardent fan such as Jon. Filled with fantastic anecdotes, references, opinions and passion, this unique episode is one we are proud to share with you and trust you’ll love it as much as we do.
There won't be dropping an episode this weekend. We would like to wish all the Mothers out there a restful Mother's day, including Bee.

Continuing our musical themes of recent weeks, we at last get the opportunity to finalize INXS: Access all Areas “Deep Cut” tracks Spotify Playlist that highlights the best of the best iconic “album tracks” that never made it to a “singles release”. “No filler, all killer” is a tagline that would adequately apply to INXS over their ten albums with Michael Hutchence. They never rested on their laurels when it came to putting an album together often having over 30 songs to choose from when it came to finalising the final track listing.
So in todays final compilation, Bee and I retrieve from all of the previous album review episodes, our favourite deep cuts and assemble them into a 36 song “Quadruple Album” tour-de-force playlist with themes for our 4 sided compilation.
We want this to be a truly interactive episode and ask you to open up the Spotify playlist below and embrace these wonderful tracks in “real time” as we discuss them with you. In this modern era where musical acts seem only be able to conjure middling singles, we celebrate the mighty INXS’ greatness once again with what could be taglined “the best of the rest”!!!

We are privileged to be joined by patrons Darren Joseph, Brett Williams and Dr Jim along with good friend of the podcast Darren Jones, to discuss and celebrate the 40th anniversary of INXS’ commercial breakout album, The Swing!
Musical tendencies and tastes often formulate during those halcyon teenage years and today’s panel deep dive into the joys of this album evoke true feelings of nostalgia, sentimentality and happiness. We discuss which songs resonated upon release in 1984 and still to this day, the importance of VHS/Video on each songs impact and the album cover/contents that were of its time. Having sold over 2,500,000 copies globally, we tackle the albums mysterious initial commercial failings in the USA market which were likely due to the albums overtly political and racially charged lyrics that stalled radio and MTV support. That aside, American fans post Kick went back and re-discovered this gem leading to platinum status accreditation and embrace songs such as Original Sin, Burn for You and I Send a Message when played “live” over the years.
Having previously reviewed The Swing album in episode 13 and explored (Ep. 68, 121 and 122) with Nick Launay (Producer) and Philip Mortlock (A&R), this episode is a true joy and trip down memory lane to a time and place where INXS raised their game from underground, alternative darlings to true, versatile and musical players about to make their mark globally!

After confidence boosting performances with Terence Trent D'Arby, the Tim Rice Extravaganza and closing out the 2000 Olympic Games, INXS sought an old mate to take the frontman duties in ex Noiseworks lead singer, Jon Stevens.
Having carved a 20 plus year career as a soloist, frontman and pivotal member of the 1992/93 Jesus Christ Superstar revival stage show throughout Australia, Jon’s credentials were bonafide and deserving. With domestic tours throughout Australia, subsequent ones to the USA, Latin America and Europe, it looked like INXS had overcome the inner uncertainty that plagued their previous 4 years.
Armed with a plan to assert themselves across the globe in both a “live concert” and recording sense, optimism was high. Despite strong reviews of Jon’s contribution to the band particularly in the performing sense, Jon would get disheartened with the lack of band creativity in the studio. With the sole single “I Get Up” released in 2003 to coincide with the Rugby Union World Cup the only fresh material, Jon would decide to leave INXS to pursue his own musical interests. That aside, Jon’s contribution to the healing, morale and confidence for INXS to continue as a going concern entity cannot be underestimated and should be appreciated.
We also go back to the year 1998 with a little pleasure and pain segment highlighting the sheer disparity of great and not so great songs that permeated the airwaves. So sit back, pour yourself a favourite tipple and enjoy a jam packed episode 182 of INXS: Access all Areas.
Plus the all important comp comes to an end and we see who will win the 2 tickets to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Nobody loves a good list more than Haydn.
In today’s episode of the INXS Access All Areas podcast, Bee allows him to indulge his longstanding wish to prosecute the case of which 25 INXS songs have had the most impact and importance within the cultural zeitgeist.
With a recording career that started in 1980 via their eponymous debut album, and culminated in 2010’s Original Sin reworking of old material, the band has written over 300 songs. So determining the top 25 that will still resonate in 100 years was a massive undertaking with many songs landing at '26!' Impact and importance are different criteria to favourite or best song. It's about which 25 songs, more than others, resonate with the public consciousness, whether it's the charts, fan enjoyment, legacy, musicianship or simply propelled the band forward in their progression from Aussie touring band to international superstardom.
So sit back, enjoy, agree, disagree, prosecute or revel in what might be our most controversial topic ever!!!
Love and peace. Haydn and Bee.

In episode 131, we embarked on a deep dive into INXS compilation albums (1982’s INXSIVE and 1994 Greatest Hits) with attention and detail.
In the 2001-2002 period, INXS Management undertook the release of two distinct compilation albums for two different regions. “Shine like it Does” under their USA label Rhino, a 42 song extravaganza covering 1979-1997 released primarily in the USA.
Secondly, “The Years:1979-1997” for their Australian market, a 41 song deep dive catalogue representation covering their Australasian and global career.
With the band in a holding pattern, both releases served to remind old fans and new ones, the deep musical contribution INXS made to the sonic soundscapes since the inception. Both these releases overcame the shortfalls of 1994’s Greatest Hits releases in the USA, UK and Australia respectively and provided true fans with a thorough representation of their singles, appropriate album deep cuts and liner notes within to die for!
Often, complication albums can be a cynical record company cash grab exploiting each albums continued sale prospects. Pleasingly, this isn’t one of these exercises as both discs cover nearly 95% of the band’s recording successes. So for collectors without these double discs, for those unaware of their existence and to those who share a fondness and musical memory of these immense releases, do yourself a favour and listen in as we dive deep on all the interesting anecdotes and facts about these two mighty releases.

INXS: Access all Areas listeners were given a unique treat last week that being Part One of Mark Pellington whose industry credits go far beyond the Beautiful Girl video. Left with a cliffhanger as Mark escalated his frustration upon hearing INXS were not in fact, in the Rock Hall of Fame, we share in Part two’s deep dive what that phone call entailed!
Additionally, Mark opens up about how a personal family tragedy informed his artistic expression particularly in the year new millennium as he was increasingly chased by emerging artists such as The Fray, Keane, Kings of Leon, The Flaming Lips and The Dave Matthews Band.
We get to hear Mark’s interesting foray into acting much at the behest of iconic filmmaker Cameron Crowe (eg. Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous). Plus continued admiration for the musicianship and excellence of INXS and how working with true superstars such as Michael Hutchence and Bono affected Mark as a Director.
All that and a whole lot more as we for the rarest of times, welcome a secret third wheel to the hosting duties all the way from Ottawa Canada!

Famed USA Video, Film, Doco and TV Director, Mark Pellington joins INXS: Access all Areas to dive deep on his fantastic video for 1993 INXS single “Beautiful Girl” amidst many other broader conversations.
Having gotten his start via MTV in 1983, Mark was at the forefront of when the video clip explosion was at the epicenter of the watching audience zeitgeist. Working initially with artists such as Leonard Cohen, De La Soul and PM Dawn, it was his future work with Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” video that brought Mark’s unbridled talents into the forefront of the music industry heavy hitters. As such, he went on a peerless run Directing for U2 (One), Public Enemy (Shut em Down), REM (Drive), Alice In Chains (Rooster) plus Springsteen, Keane, The Flaming Lips and obviously our beloved INXS.
Interestingly, it was INXS that would bring him his sole Grammy nomination eventually losing out to Peter Gabriel’s “Steam” video (Urghhhh).
Mark generously opens up how personal grief informed much of creative ideas and we get to dive deep on his work with other artists, feature films and his love of the Australian music industry culminating a cliffhanger moment regarding INXS’ lack of recognition by the Rock Hall of Fame Committee that shall leave you clamouring for an early release of Part Two.
So sit back and enjoy the iconic words of Mark Pellington.

With the year 2000 upon us, the world was entering an exciting new century. Music, cinema, pop culture and the arts were evolving and INXS were starting to take bigger steps in a world without Michael Hutchence.
With the dust settling on Michael’s posthumous album release, INXS took the left field move of signing up to the Tim Rice Spectacular Concert Series through Australia. Joining recognized artists such as Iva Davies (Icehouse), David Essex (Rock On) and a bevy of renowned Australian artists re-interpreting Tim’s amazing back catalogue of songs.
With confidence slowly returning as an entity, the band continued to surprise teaming up with Jon Stevens (formerly Noiseworks) for two impromptu but sold out gigs in Melbourne and Sydney. With fans traveling as far as Chicago and the UK to attend these gigs, the level of passion and pride at seeing a full-set INXS gig again was palpable!
Combined with some private corporate gigs, the band made their long awaited international return headlining the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games with a rollicking updated version of What you Need that had the crowd on their feet.
So with small steps, INXS were getting their mojo back in a steady and incremental way against the odds.

Welcome to 2024 to all of our wonderful bronze, silver, gold and platinum patrons and loyal listeners.
We kick off the new year (pardon the pun) with Part 2 our important deep dive into Michael Hutchence’s posthumous solo release with a song-by-song review.
Following part one, we see how Michael stretches his musical capabilities and range both lyrically and sonically to great effect. Haunting, open and often literal, Michael’s lyrics have never been more specific and brutal.
We discuss each track and rate them accordingly, with our unique criterion. Sonically lush, guitar-wise, often dirty and emotionally heartbreaking, I recommend listening to this album for the healing and the true insight into what Michael was truly feeling in his final years.
This episode of the INXS AAA podcast is completed with additional news items and details about our competitions just launched. We nudge the 100-minute mark, so this action-packed episode may be your own two parter! After 2 years of mourning, copious amounts of gossip innuendo and grief, finally INXS and Michael Hutchence fans have something meaningful and strangely healing to celebrate.
This posthumous release of 13 unique and varied tracks were originally the brainchild of a phone call (make that two) from Michael in 1995 to legendary UK Gang of Four band leader Andy Gill.
With the duo residing in the comfortable, calm and tranquil surrounds of the South of France, an environment of immense creativity and teamwork was established leading to a vast amount of songs and demos laid down. Knowing Co-Production support and proper studio surrounds were required, enter famed US alternative Producer and musician Danny Saber plus both the legendary Peter Gabriel Real World Studios amidst many others.
The songs contained a lyrical honesty, earnestness and soundscape unheard of from Michael before, which given his 1995 surroundings, was to be expected.
With no timelines or management interference, this self-financed labour of love had no release date time pressures, hence was parked when Michael returned to INXS commitments in 1996 and 1997. But with Michael’s unfortunate passing in November 1997, the integrity of these recordings were salvaged by an “angel from Los Angeles” in Danny Saber to whom we shall all be eternally grateful.
So sit back and enjoy what a monumental task it was to simply get this album to the release phase plus the circumstances and facts that lead to one of Michael’s greatest recording efforts.

Having had over 18 months to process the passing of Michael Hutchence, INXS were presented with the unique opportunity to spearhead the opening of Stadium Australia. The venue that would in the year 2000, be the home of the Sydney Olympic Games.
With ex Australian cricketing icon Dean Jones putting the deal together, INXS were proud to be the lead musical act that preceded the Australian Socceroos playing the FIFA All-Stars on June 12th, 1999 with over 90,000 spectators packing the venue. All they needed was a lead singer!!! Easier said than done.
Enter famed USA soul, pop and R&B vocalist Sananda Maitreya then know as Terence Trent Darby, who some 10 years earlier, “came like a comet” (hello The Waterboys) onto the music scene with his 10,000,000 + Introducing the Hardline debut album. Was this to be a one-off? A rent-try-buy arrangement or some other modus operandi.
Tune in to INXS: Access all Areas to find out all the answers to the above questions and also embrace in what was an unlikely musical union, albeit just for one night!!

Mark Opitz defines in episode 103 of INXS: Access All Areas that the role of the producer is akin to the director of the movie: guiding the engineers to follow his time-honored practices in getting the sounds and sonics of the vocals, guitars, drums, and keyboards in sync; ensuring the mixes are done to satisfaction, and pushing the band to be the best they can be with their songwriting and studio performance. Despite the commercial failure of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts, particularly in America (no thanks to the record label), the band and Mark came up with 12 tracks that 29 years later still hold up musically. We drill down on the Capri experience to examine “where” each member of the band was at, personally and professionally, after Welcome to Wherever You Are and a recent retreat to Michael’s South France villa.
Why was Capri chosen? What actually happened there? (Warts and all!) And what did the imminent ending of INXS’ long-term arrangement with its label mean for the marketing and distribution for Full Moon, Dirty Hearts?
Mark has never been more erudite and revealing as we take you on a “Back to the Future, fly on the wall” experience of the entire Capri affair: the island, the hotel, the history, the recording studio, the ad hoc phone calls to Bono from Michael, the sudden arrival of Chris Murphy who sought to renegotiate his management deal, and Michael’s post-accident period where he was adjusting to life without the vital senses of taste and smell.
Sometimes great music can come out of great calamity and band dysfunction (hello, Fleetwood Mac 1977 Rumours), and we are lucky to have this often forgotten and neglected album to listen to and re-appreciate some 29 years later. So, before we examine each track and discuss the songs, sit back and immerse yourself in a time and place where the band was enjoying a creative peak, if not a commercial one, and embrace the making of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts.
Love and Peace ✌️

From the outset, big thanks to all of the well-wishers who made episode 100 such a beautiful experience for Bee, the team, and me. Today, we are fortunate to delve deeper with the inimitable Darren Jones, whose access, anecdotes, and involvement with INXS have few peers.
We get to hear about Garry Gary Beers’ fantastic Mangrove Studios which was state-of-the-art for its time and gave back to the Australian musicians such as Silverchair, Courtney Barnett, and Sarah Blasko. Darren also shares a rare moment in Adelaide when Andrew Farriss allegedly “lost the plot” with rare anger on display.
With a jam-packed news section and some exciting chart updates, we are excited to commence the next 100 episodes with a bang! So put on the EarPods, headphones or turn up the speakers in your car and enjoy Episode 101 of INXS:Access all Areas!

Destined to be a future honorary patron, Darren has generously donated rare content such as the Dekadance material for our competitions. He also opens up in detail but with total respect about his dealings and friendships with each band member, particularly during the period after Michael’s passing, when the band’s direction was cloudy.
With marvelous production and archival audio by my Co-host Bee, this episode’s two weeks of planning and recording promises to be a “do not miss a moment” as we pay tribute with a modern-day perspective to what is great and fantastic about INXS.

In episode 99, INXS: Access All Areas pays tribute to both band and Canadian fans for their mutual love for one another as myself and Bee, dive deep into all successes and experiences that created such joint love. Singles chart success, touring, recording and interviews are all discussed and acknowledged with thoroughness and thought.
Canada may have been a slightly slower burn initially for INXS, but it’s the country where the band has had their highest amount of number one singles even exceeding their homeland.
Additionally, from Vancouver to Quebec and everything in between, INXS constantly toured and supported the rabid fans' thirst for live concert touring with loyalty and gusto.
So, as we prepare for Episode 100 next week, narrow your focus to this special episode that’s also dedicated to our Podcast patrons from Canada, namely Vern, Jamie, Geneviève, Heidi, Sandrine, Maïté, and Leon.

With the final INXS track in Song Week upon us, we culminate with Never Tear Us Apart, a track that has grown from a beautiful ballad to truly iconic status. Ensuring a fourth consecutive top 10 from album KICK, Never Tear Us Apart is an alternative sounding Fats Domino-inspired waltz transformed into a beautiful, lush orchestral masterpiece.
Soaring the charts globally, this ballad never wastes a note, lyric, or moment, and still, 35 years later produces spine tingles and heart flutters. Whether it’s Michael’s evocative lyrics and vocals or the sublime instrumentation by the band, this song truly comes to life in the city of Prague with Richard Lowenstein’s award-winning video.
Covered by numerous artists since its release including Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Natalie Imbruglia, and The Teskey Brothers, N.T.U.A. has transcended its origins with it now being the match day theme song for Port Adelaide Football Club, Michael’s funeral song, and the titular name of the band’s award-winning miniseries in 2014.
So sit back, grab a Kleenex and open your heart to this beautiful song.
Love and peace. ✌️

With their first top 15 hits in Australia roaring through the airwaves, it set up Shabooh Shoobah for 12 months of Top 40 occupation and 3 subsequent strong singles. But most importantly, it crossed over into the fickle MTV and Billboard landscape by becoming a Top 30 hit Stateside.
The rest, they say, is history so sit back and reminisce the greatness of The One Thing that 40 years later, still sounds fresh and vital.

We return to Part 2 interview with Richard Clapton that takes things up a notch. Australia’s preeminent singer-songwriter continues to share fascinating tales of his days with INXS that include a life-changing night when he slept in the bed normally occupied by Michael and Kylie, the re-recording of INXS’ The Loved One in Paris, and his long-standing relationship with Chris Murphy.
Forever erudite and giving, Richard continues to talk with grace, humor, and fondness for the halcyon days before devices and ‘gotcha’ culture moments pervade everything an artist does these days.
Hey, Bee gets poetic (lookout, Banjo Patterson!), we have another moment with Murphy and a very rare special voiceover from a dearly departed icon.
So, join the musical revolution of Access All Areas: INXS that kicks “The Voice’s” ass in every way, and tell your friends about it!!

With such “non-rock n roll” artists like Dionne Warwick, Dolly Parton and Lionel Richie making the ballot, this concept of recognizing this institution is sadly becoming a modern-day exercise in woke, identity politics, and rock n roll irrelevance.

The 1970s were a seminal time worldwide for singer-songwriters with the names James Taylor, Billy Joel, Carol King, and Neil Sedaka permeating the cultural landscape. In Australia, Richard Clapton spearheaded the “down under” contribution to the field of songwriting success.
However, it was 1981 when a chance meeting with six young musical upstarts from the Northern Beaches paved the way for an enduring and successful musical kinship and friendship. The Loved One cover and Underneath the Colours album were pivotal in establishing INXS as an emerging act and one that fans and critics would jump on board with as this new decade took shape.
So, in the first of two episodes, Bee and I are blessed to talk to Richard and dive deep into a time, place, and period where “the song, the craft, and the culture” were all about the artistic craft. Fascinating anecdotes, a loyalty to his mates and a heartfelt passion shine through as we thank Richard for all he has done.
So dive deep and enjoy the dulcet tones of Richard Clapton.

So, this week Bee and I pay tribute to the 1977-86 period of INXS’ career whereby they came, they saw and they conquered Australia first before making the massive play for international success. Many Oz fans see Shabooh Shoobah and The Swing as their favourite and most iconic albums, and we pay tribute to the effect and role these albums played before the Chris Thomas trilogy of Listen Like Thieves, Kick and X had globally.
We dive deep into touring, the early videos, local awards achieved, chart success, and the cultural impact earned that brought about confidence, self-belief, and financial ability to relocate and take on North America, Asia, and Europe.
All this and a whole lot more as we celebrate with patriotic pride and passion, the “formative Aussie years” of INXS and their homeland, Australia. Great southern land …. awesome Australian band!!!Enjoy!

Michael Kelland Hutchence, born in 1960 Sydney to Patricia Glassop and Kell Hutchence, grew up to be one of the most charismatic frontmen of his era and all time. With moments of grace, moments of brilliance, and a penchant for the unpredictable, Bee and I individually rate our “top 6 or more Michael moments” of all time and revel in a time where not hip hop but “rock stars drove the big cars”!
Also, we have a chunky news section that both informs and educates all, whilst there is a long-awaited return of the rantiest of rants that has a certain 1980’s hair metal tosser firmly in view.
All that and a whole lot more, so do yourself a favour and join the Michael party that is Access all Areas: INXS!

As we say every week “that’s a wrap….. a Xmas Wrap” for 2021 and we dedicate our final episode of the year to our patrons and listener community. Bee and I reflect on the episodes that made 2021 a true joy and have a few INXS band members drop by and wish a festive cheer to us all. Looking forward to 2022, we share with you the topics and guests we are pumped to air on INXS: Access all Areas such as Jon Farriss, Garry Gary Beers, Richard Lowenstein amidst many. Additionally, we are inspired to properly acknowledge the upcoming 30th anniversary of Welcome to Wherever You are, get Not Enough Time charting again and do justice to Michael Hutchence’s 25th year since his passing.
With a goal to up the ante in terms of getting INXS firstly nominated for the Rock Hall of Fame next year, we shall seek all of your help in paving a groundswell of momentum to assist this happening. People power has never been more pronounced in accelerating change and creating success and via our platforms and your passion we can do it. We also acknowledge individually each patron who without their financial and platform contribution, Bee and I wouldn’t be able to produce a weekly program. We also play out to a famous Australian song that we hope resonates with you amidst this special time of the year.
Also, make sure you listen to the very end to hear an extra add-on from Bee.
So as we sign off for the year and allow many to catch up on all of the past episodes, we wish you and your family a safe, enjoyable, and loving time.

More than just a singles band, INXS always treated each song’s addition to an album with the utmost diligence. No filler, all killer was often the mantra as each band member sought to contribute material over the journey.
Bee and I had the massive challenge to compile a list of great album tracks that we “both agreed on” to share with the Access all Areas community and hopefully enrich the listener experience.
So, if you’re sick of the hits, over radio’s constant flogging of the Kick album singles and want to truly appreciate the sheer depth of INXS’ back catalogue of deep cuts, tune in, get up and dance, rejoice and turn up loud some of INXS’ greatest songs not-so-well known or played on mainstream platforms.
Love and Peace

It’s often opined that Chris Murphy was the 7th member of INXS and, from a business point of view such sentiment, seemed more than legitimate. However, it’s without a doubt that artistically Richard Lowenstein was that 7th member.
Joining the INXS family in Northern Queensland as that pasty, vitamin D-deprived emerging auteur in early 1984, he would go on to be an intrinsic and artistic tour-de-force shaping INXS’ ascent from hard-working, freshmen musicians to globe-trotting superstars. All of that aside, Access all Areas would love to provide an origin story backdrop of who just Richard Lowenstein is and the lead-up of how he came to work with INXS.
The son of parents who fled Nazi Germany via the UK and ultimately to Australia in 1940, Richard was the proud graduate from Swinburne Institute of Technology, Film and Television Department in 1979. Within a year, he had directed his first music video embracing the Melbourne punk rock scene and was awarded the illustrious Erwin Radio Prize for Best Short Film at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
With an impressive résumé building, Richard’s life was to change with his groundbreaking music video of the Hunters & Collectors’ classic “Talking to a Stranger”, a video that aroused the attention of one “Michael Hutchence”. Being a man in demand, Richard produced and directed clips for Cold Chisel, Tim Finn (ex-Splitz Enz), Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons, plus The Church, all whilst releasing in 1984 his first full feature film Strikebound, the story of 1930’s coal miners’ strike (based on his mother’s book and union research) that coincidentally featured the INXS track “All the Voices”.
A true auteur to his craft, Richard has always remained humble, stylistically unique, and a true innovator in celluloid. Never one to embrace the mainstream and dumb it down (hello Michael Bay), Richard’s early work shows a true passion, instinct, and distinctive approach in the art of filmmaking, whether it be short-form or long-form, and we hope you enjoy the first installment of this career retrospective of the great Richard Lowenstein (not steen ).

In this modern world where times have been tougher than ever “true friendships” are golden. So today we celebrate the enduring relationship between Jon Farriss and Britain’s Simon Yeo whose lives cross paths in the early 1990s and has stood the test of time and distance!
Simon Yeo was a Merchandising Manager with Polydor Music and got acquainted with the entire band through this role. A chance follow-up meeting with Jon through mutual friends in Hong Kong sowed the seeds for a lifetime connection that saw him become Simon’s best man at his wedding, play live at his 50th birthday with other INXS members and go on tour through the USA on the Elegantly Wasted Tour.
Simon never betrays the confidences of Jon and the band’s inner secrets however does delve deep into numerous fascinating anecdotes such as a dangerous night out with mobsters, the struggles that Michael seemed to be dealing with late in his life, and the distinct lack of record support for INXS’ Elegantly Wasted release vs their sycophantic love for U2’s miserable nadir album release the same year POP.
Forever erudite and full of love and admiration for INXS’ globe-trotting ways, Simon went from a passing interest in the band to a fully-fledged appreciator of what it took for them to climb to international fame and the resultant toll it took out of each band member.
As always, Access all Areas tries to take you back in time to a place with people we love and provide a retrospective understanding of what took place at the time good, bad or ugly. We thank Simon Yeo immensely for his honesty, insights, and passion in recounting an era once lived but a “special relationship” that endures.

In the week we remember and reminisce about the life of Michael Kelland Hutchence, it only seems appropriate that we hear from the man who arguably was closest to him from an artistic point of view, Andrew Farriss. We thank Andrew for his preparedness to be vulnerable and share intimate and revealing memories of the times he and Michael penned some of the most stunning melodies and hooks together. We cover lyrics, Michael’s cosmopolitan and cultural awareness borne out of a youth traversing many countries, and the legendary vocal duet with Jimmy Barnes on ‘Good Times’ for Australian Made. With praise for Mark Opitz production, Andrew was in awe of the gravelly vocal of Barnesy offset by the honey dripped delivery from Michael as they essentially compete in a “song-off”! The pride Andrew has in recounting Michael’s mastery is heart-warming and indicates the massive respect he has 24 years after he left us.
Interestingly, Andrew veers into a fascinating discussion about INXS’ travails in Argentina not long after the end of the Falklands War and takes immense pride in INXS being the first international band to tour there thus paving the way for others to follow. He delves deep on Beck, the technology debate modern music faces against traditional instrumentation, and the importance of INXS of mattering musically to Michael and the band. As we wrap up, we do get to the last few songs from Welcome to Wherever You Are to complete our album discussion. With Mark Opitz chipping in with valuable asides we no doubt felt a lot of love in the room for the legacy of what INXS created over 35 years and thank both Andrew and Mark for allowing us to delve deep.

Outside their humble Australian origins, the USA was the first country to embrace the new wave dance/rock sensibilities of INXS. 1983 was a seminal year for the band as they toiled long and hard from coast to coast, imparting their immense live playing abilities for all to see.
With MTV taking off and “The One Thing” gaining a Top 30 position on the famed Billboard Hot 100 charts, INXS were proving themselves to be more than a fad new-wave band. Blowing contemporaries off stage (hello Adam Ant), INXS set the tone as a blistering live act but with a versatility that would soon realize itself.
As the decade rounded out, INXS would go on to be the biggest band on the planet with multi-platinum album accreditation for The Swing, Listen Like Thieves, and the game-changing Kick. Awards followed, tours were sold out and acclaim from the critics/publications like Rolling Stone ensued.
Come the 1990’s, the band released more commercially triumphant albums such as the multi-million seller X, then Live Baby Live, and Welcome to Wherever You Are, albeit slightly less popular than their predecessor albums. With Rock Star: INXS giving the band a second jump into the USA consciousness, the band shared their biggest hit for 15 years in “Pretty Vegas” going Gold (500,000 copies).
As Bee and I reminisce with our dive deep episode from last Thanksgiving, INXS would truly like to thank all American fans who gave the band that early-career impetus to springboard them into the northern hemisphere consciousness.
So, sit back with a belly full of turkey, eggnog, pecan pie, cranberry sauce and Budweiser beer and relax to the dulcet tones of INXS: Access all Areas American style!!!
Love and Peace Haydn

It’s that time of year again where November 22nd hits our calendars.
Originally synonymous with the date that JFK was assassinated in Dallas in 1963. It’s now synonymous with the INXS and wider music industry as the day we lost Michael Hutchence.
As mentioned by Andrew Farriss in our recent deep dive interview, let’s try and use this day, not just in solemnity but also as an acknowledgment of the massive contribution Michael made as a singer, a songwriter, a band member, a brother, and as a son.
So into today's episode, we bring together for the first time Michael’s peers such as Bono/U2, Michael Stipe from REM, and Simon LeBon from Duran Duran to share their admiration for Michael. But more importantly, our INXS patrons and the podcast listening community to share just what Michael meant to them.
Sometimes melancholy, sometimes heartbreaking but on many occasions, truly uplifting and inspiring are the anecdotes and memories shared by our INXS alumni.
Michael Kelland Hutchence: we love you, we miss you but most importantly you did matter and you are in our hearts forever!
Love and peace Haydn & Bee

With an early drop, part 3 of our Andrew and Mark deep dive won’t let you down. With a detailed exploration of side 2, we get further valuable insights into the production and musical excellence of Welcome to Wherever you Are’s quieter and more experimental moments.
As always, the conversation veers into interesting anecdotes such as touring, other artists influenced by INXS’ legacy, and the enduring relationship between Mark’s definitive production techniques and the mastery of song-craft on show between Andrew and Michael.
As we approach the 30th year since this defining and benchmark album was released, we at Access all Areas are most grateful for the time, honesty, articulation, and recounting of events by Andrew and Mark during these 3 episodes. They are now locked in a time capsule for years to come.

Bee and are privileged again to have access to the musical genius of Andrew Farriss and Mark Opitz. With Welcome to Wherever You Are in 1992 being the main discussion point again, we’re excited in part 2 to get into the tracks on side A.
With part one having more joyous story tangents than Back to the Future 2, both Andrew and Mark dive deep into the musical excellence of Questions, Heaven Sent, Communication, Taste it, Not Enough Time, and All Around.
You’ll get to immerse yourself in the true history of how this seminal album was recorded with this episode chock full of insights, anecdotes, and recording technique discussions. Additionally, we hear how Andrew and Michael united more than ever on the lyrical content of the songs. Plus, there are rumors that a “standing ovation” allegedly occurs in the middle of the podcast.
So do yourself a favour and block out all the white noise and “forget about the problems in your life” and enjoy Part 2 with Andrew and Mark.

This memorable episode by songwriting royalty Andrew Farriss. The “Brian Wilson” of INXS, Andrew simply carved out an iconic catalogue of melodies, tunes, and hooks that have stood the test for over 40 years. Honorary patron and Australia’s greatest Producer Mark Opitz joins us too as we unpack each song from “Welcome to Wherever You Are”. Deep insights, anecdotes, and thoughts are fully explained as Andrew graciously diverts discussion into numerous INXS tangents and experiences that simply were spellbinding! As always Mark pieced together some fantastic insights into the entire recording experience and why he rates the album the greatest accomplishment and period of his 50-year career. With our podcast retrospective journeying into 1992, we are ecstatic to finally dive deep into the musical masterpiece that was “Welcome to Wherever You Are”, an album that reunited the band with legendary Australian Producer exactly 10 years after the seminal record Shabooh Shoobah.
Under-appreciated, under-promoted, and misunderstood at the time, Welcome to Wherever You have represented a massive musical leap for the band post the international juggernauts of Kick and X album releases. With no limits, restraint, or mitigation in the studio, the band experimented with sitars, tablas, 60 piece orchestras, and state-of-the-art engineering techniques.
The results are a listening experience that rewards the patient listener with a kaleidoscopic of sonic sounds and flourishes. Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed, the Welcome Album nearly 30 years is a true musical masterpiece that deserves a second chance to hit the airwaves.
That aside, sit back and reminisce, rediscover, or for some discover the Achtung Baby of Oz that is Welcome to Wherever You Are!

The Concert for LIFE!!!! (not strife)
March 28th, 1992 was a pivotal day in the career of INXS.
With the tragic 1991 murder of groundbreaking doctor Victor Chang, the former Head of St Vincents Hospital in Sydney, the band spearheaded the Centennial Park gig with all profits going to the newly set up charity. With a huge local support artist list including Jenny Morris, Richard Clapton, Baby Animals, and Crowded House, over 70,000+ fans turned up to cheer away in what was uniquely a nonalcoholic gig and fairly priced at $21/head.
Opening up with the never heard before “Heaven Sent”, the band unearthed 4 new tracks from the forthcoming Welcome to Wherever you Are album. Michael preening across the stage in his magnificent white “Elvis Esque” jumpsuit, he had all of the fans in the palm of his hand. Unfortunately, the concert is more remembered for backstage fighting amongst the “suits” with infamous stories leaked to a bloodthirsty press looking for titillation versus altruism.
The subsequent media backlash directed towards the band was felt for many years to follow and unfortunately sullied or drowned out all of the artistic merits of subsequent INXS releases. Today the true facts are told as we remove the specter of gossip and gloss loss and celebrate the purity of what was “The Concert for LIFE”!

As we wrap up the Kirk Pengilly trilogy retrospective, it’s time for many of our valued patrons to hit him up for question time. Forever the gentlemen and Mr. Nice Guy, Kirk graciously answers these with passion and purpose.
Also, we get to dive deep into those pivotal INXS songs that Kirk feels summed up the band plus uncover a surprising link between the MAXQ album and Kirk himself. Additionally, that famous trek from Sydney to Perth with Michael in the late 1970’s is revealed whilst Kirk discusses possible new music from the archives of “Vault Pengilly”.

It was a true joy hearing from Kirk last week and are excited to elaborate on his journey in the second part of our deep dive.
In this episode, we get to know the real Kirk away from the limelight of an international rock star. Humble community activist, health/vision ambassador, and devoted husband to wife Layne Beachley.
As a youngster moving from Victoria to New South Wales, the sliding door moment he met Tim in science class was a moment that changed Oz rock forever and Kirk’s insights into this are truly fascinating.
We elaborate on the famous Kirk diaries, the infamous stumble off stage (thanks Michael), and excitedly share patron questions direct to Kirk with excellent answers to follow!
So we trust you’ll enjoy Part 2 of Kirk Pengilly on INXS: Access all Areas and immerse yourself in the career and class of character that is “our Kirk”!

Episode 70: Kirk Pengilly Interview Part 1
It’s with true joy that Bee and I welcome the inimitable Kirk Pengilly to INXS: Access All Areas for what truly is a deep dive into INXS’ hardest working and versatile band member. Erudite, articulate, and with a faultless memory for detail, listeners shall be in-store for a unique trip down memory lane.
With no topics off-limit, Kirk recounts those critical early days where he moved interstate and skipped a grade thus famously meeting Tim Farriss in science class. A sliding doors moment that led to millions of peoples lives changing globally, with the seeds of INXS born.
Forever humble and gracious, we do reveal his iconic status in our very own “media wars” series and he naturally was a good sport about it all. So sit back, flick the Back to the Future and Oceans 11,12,13 trilogy and prepare for the first of our own “Kirk Trilogy”!!

“The Swing and other stories with Philip Mortlock”
After 67 episodes now completed, Bee and I were in for a treat with our latest guest Phillip Mortlock.
Not only intrinsic in assisting INXS to leave the smaller independent label Deluxe that produced INXS’ first two albums, but Philip’s massive expertise with other luminary bands such as Cold Chisel and Icehouse also paved the way for his artistic prowess to design The Swing, Dekadance and Listen Like Thieves album covers.
With clever themes and narratives highlighted on all of the singles, videos, and album covers/sleeves, Phillip was crucial in introducing the world to the timeless images and vistas that were INXS.
Having forged a career that included being a board member with A.R.I.A, producing the inspiring Alberts Documentary, and building the Origin Publishing Label, Philip has left an indelible footprint on the Australian entertainment industry.
So sit back and be taken back to a time and place that is most special to INXS fans. Peace and love!

With the wider world in turmoil “who’s going to give us peace and happiness”?
Well, that fantastic sextet from Sydney that started off as the Farriss Brothers on August 16th, 1977 on Tim’s 21st birthday. That’s who! With COVID-19 lockdowns, curfews, and insurgency in Afghanistan rife, we need a time out to celebrate, acknowledge and commemorate a Happy Birthday for INXS.
The operative word being “happy”! Bee and I dive deep into our respective top 6 INXS tracks that represent pure joy, happiness and stimulate our smiles. In addition, we add some non INXS tracks that over the years have been toe-tappers and brought happiness to our collective hearts.
Oh yeah, Bee has her own new segment “fun facts in music”. So do yourself a favour and “forget about the troubles in life” and join Episode 65 of INXS: Access all Areas.

Episode 64:
Don’t Change... It’s rare that a song that eked into the Billboard Charts at number 80 in 1982 could still some 39 years later still have such a profound effect. The epic sounds, soaring vocals, and lyrical refrain have made the song rock n roll royalty with it inspiring Bruce Springsteen, No Doubt, Everclear, Grinspoon, AFI, and The Audreys amidst many to cover it. A song that still sounds vital and fresh thanks largely to Mark Opitz's timeless production. A song that still elicits the heart, mind, and soul to invest in every line. A song that truly still enables an emotional connection each time it plays on the radio.
So, this week we dig deep into just what, why, and how this song has become the classic weapon in INXS’ catalogue and share its greatness to you, our listeners. Love and peace!

GREAT BRITAIN GREAT INXS:
INXS was a truly international band with the sextet playing over 4000 gigs across the globe.
In this first installment of INXS’ conquering a region, we commemorate the slow burn and ultimate ascent to cultural icons in the UK.
This culminating in Wembley and the number one album, Welcome To Wherever You Are. We examine all aspects of the band's influence of British bands in their formative years plus five deep on tours, sales, chart results, friendships formed and just how they overcame the prejudice of the UK press to truly deserve what became in July 1991: “INXS week in Britain”.
Don't forget to check out the eBay page, there is always something wonderful to bid on and win. This week is an original complete Fan-kit from 1997, jam-packed with goodies. Click this link to find out more about what is inside.wwwinxsaccessallareas.com

For the very first time since we launched INXS: Access all Areas, we get to review a new INXS release in contemporary times.
Despite being songs derived from their back catalogue, the new soundtrack Original Sin: The Seven Sins is an adventurous 13 song release. It provides listeners with 9 modern cover versions of timeless tracks whilst drawing on 4 songs from prior albums.
So Bee and I take on the unique task of reviewing each track on its own merits whilst also giving due consideration as to how they shape the narrative of the movie to which they’re a companion piece.
As always Bee and I shall approach this in two different ways with the usual difference of opinions forthcoming. We all appreciate and love the original versions of these songs, however, do yourself a favour and look to this album as a celebration and modern day complement to the greatness of INXS and as the guy from Wham once said: “Listen Without Prejudice”!

Forever generous with the fans, Tim shares fascinating stories about life on tour, the famous “Jesus” T-Shirt choice at Wembley, his musical hero celebrity encounters, and why INXS were such “anti-Divas” particularly when on tour.
We raise with him the INXS: Access all Areas mission statement to get the band into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, which lends itself to some fascinating discussion.
So unlike poor sequels, we hope this one exceeds the original. Enjoy!!!

Another album deep dive, time again with a twist as we again welcome our Honoury Patron Mark Opitz, the Producer of the said album “Live Baby Live”.
A controversial release at the time in November 1991 with some critics questioning the validity of its “live credentials” Mark offers a frank and personal assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of this album. Hot on the heals of the Wembley Concert, time and the huge amount of work done meant that a simple Wembley album release was not logistically possible with Management keen to release something that took into all continents of the world insofar as INXS live performances were concerned.
We also examine the underrated new track “Shining Star” and how this shaped the follow-up recordings also done by Mark on Welcome to Wherever You Are.
So sit back and listen to the great Mark Opitz talk about a pivotal era in his INXS journey and contribution.

Imagine this...
It’s 2023 and all of the INXS: Access all Areas patrons and alumni are in the audience as INXS are inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame. We hear heart-wrenching speeches from Andrew regarding Michael. We tear up as Tim recounts the rise from the far landscapes of Australian tours in 1980 to the glory of selling out Wembley in 1991.
With awards in hand, the band get the opportunity to play “live” for the first time for 11 years but this time with a difference. A tasteful hologram of Michael is superimposed onto the stage as Tim, Andrew, Gary, John, and Kirk reform with their dearly lost friend for a 4 song masterclass to rubber-stamp their long-deserved induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
So sit back, relax and hear how, what, where, and why this great band should and shall receive music's greatest award very soon and just “why” we need all of you to help!!

See you next week.
Love Haydn & Bee.
So it’s December 1983 in Melbourne Australia and 3XY on the AM dial puts out the most unbelievable, hook-laden, catchy, funky, memorable 5-minute tune to ever hit my 13-year-old ears.
Who was this?
What was this?
What had I just heard, please Mr. DJ tell me at the end of the song and please, please, please don’t go to an ad! Bad luck as they immediately go to a Coco Pops jingle commercial. Eager but somewhat frightened that this propulsive and new favorite song may never be heard again, I feared these dulcet tones may be lost forever.
No Shazam App, no internet to track the song down online, and no helpful DJ to ease my concerns, all seems lost. Alas, they come back from the ads and announce the song, announce the band, and through sheer weight of caller demand to the station play the song again. With Aussie pride and fervor, the DJ says folks: “this is Original Sin by the mighty INXS”! My life was complete.
And so became my total emotional investment to these soon-to-be national treasures.
So tonight, we examine 5 minutes and 19 seconds that changed mine and the lives of many. Every vocal, every sigh, every guitar riff, and every cry shall be broken down.
Listener Warning: this shall take longer than 5 minutes and 19 seconds. Celebrate!
Cheers Haydn.

“We are One”
From a little idea 12 months ago, INXS: Access all Areas celebrates its first birthday “live” from The Hard Rock Cafe in Darling Harbour Sydney. Joined by close friends and our very first Patron Carmen, we challenge the technological limits by recording and beaming out, live and on delay to our international audience.
We celebrate with past guests such as the omnipresent Richard Simpkins, receive well-wishes from Gary Beers, Tim Farriss, Mark Opitz, Nick Egan, and our magnificent patrons plus revel in all that is great about “our band” INXS.
So if you missed the show, fear not as you can for the first time choose to watch or listen to our milestone 50th episode of INXS: Access all Areas and celebrate.

Before a rock group can become the main concert act, you need to pay your dues as a support band.
INXS definitely did this in the early days supporting iconic acts in the day such as Midnight Oil and famously Queen and Adam and the Ants. In the Summer of 1991, it was INXS’ turn to return the favor to one of Britain’s most in-demand and highly regarded acts “The Soup Dragons”. When asked to join the INXS X Factor tour, the Soup Dragons got a taste of leaving the clubs/pubs and plying their craft in huge stadiums.
With unique incites and anecdotes about their time with one of the world's biggest bands finally conquering the UK and Europe, we also get to live the actual experience through lead singer Sean Dickson.
Prepare to lose yourself the story of a and enjoy a great emerging band, hanging out with an iconic group, from somebody uniquely placed to comment.
“We also recognize and pay homage to the life and contribution to the music of Music Mogul Michael Gudinski who sadly passed away March 2nd.”

A special treat for some uber INXS fans and Patrons of INXS Access All Areas.
Bee has now for 2021 started a new segment called, the Bee-line. She will be zooming in with some of INXS's friends and finding out more about the INXS lifestyle, from people who knew them.
We kick off with this special zoom chat with a Big friend to the show, Nick Egan. Nick Egan was not only a very close friend of Michael's but was also the art director and producer of the iconic Kick and X album covers, as well as directing a few of their music videos. This is part 1 of the zoom chat he had with a few of our fabulous Patrons.

With over 20,000,000 sales globally Kick cemented INXS stature as the biggest band in the world in 1988. An all Andrew and Michael songwriting affair, INXS took the momentum of Listen like Thieves 2 years earlier and created a musical juggernaut.
With 4 top singles in the USA including their only number 1 Need you Tonight, Kick climbed the charts all around the globe paving the way for a two-year world tour.
Slick, stylish, and supreme, Kick merged the current sounds of the dance floor with INXS’ unique sonic flourishes that were fresh, dynamic, and the epicenter of all that was great.
So buckle in for the first of our 3 part Kick Special and reminisce track by track what made this “the must-have album of the 1980s

It’s with complete self-indulgent joy Bee and I make this podcast all about “OURSELVES”. Yikes!!! No, we don’t, but seriously we are passionate and proud to share with the INXS: Access all Areas family our individual Top 5 INXS experiences.
Despite growing up in different hemispheres, the musical excellence of INXS was still able to connect with our respective eyes, ears, and soul. Through destiny on June 6th, 2019 in Sydney at the Michael Hutchence documentary, our paths crossed, and the seeds were sown for this podcast to come alive.
Now we truly get to share the moments, the joy, the heartbreak, and the glee that INXS has brought to our lives. Our lists shall vary but what unites us is the unbridled passion and emotions that this international globe-trotting sextet from Sydney has had on our lives.
So buckle in for what undoubtedly is our most emotionally charged episode where old wounds are juxtaposed with sheer exultation. Peace and Love!!

So they say the sequel can never exceed the original. Well, let's challenge that theory as we go again with our interview with Richard Simpkin and his “Almost Famous’ exploits with Michael, Jon, Tim, Gary, Andrew, and Kirk of INXS.
An author, a photographer, an interviewer, and a proud purveyor of history, Richard’s insights are both a fascinating and passionate account of a time and place we are all envious to visit.
So buckle up, pour a glass of wine, and relax as we escape these current tough times with this very personal journey.

Well, who would have thought a chance decision to visit The Sebel Townhouse Hotel in Sydney Australia in the Summer of 1989 as a 15-year-old would have led to such a chance interaction with Australia’s most famous sextet and a band of brothers.
But this is exactly what happened to Richard Simpkin that lead to lifelong friendships with members of INXS and their entourage, private access to the X album recording sessions, and the rare opportunity to get unique footage of the band in their most natural of environments: the studio.
So strap yourself in for this amazing two-part interview where we delve deep into an experience that truly resembles the “Almost Famous” movie and get insights that no other person on the planet would have.

“Having formed both their bands some 12 months apart, INXS and U2 were two of the biggest acts to make it in the 1980s.
With numerous songs connecting with millions of fans globally, their paths often intersected and a great friendship was formed by both iconic singers.
Please join us as we reflect on both bands' careers and moments where they influenced each other”!

1984 was the year INXS leapt from promising brash prodigies to international recording players.
The Swing undertook the genius production values of Nile Rodgers and Nick Launay and saw the band stretch their sound with the addition of funk, orchestral flourishes and salsa rhythms that had fans heading straight to the dancefloor.
With no song sounding similar to another, the band’s musical leap was full of daring, unique creativity and unabashed charm.
With many contributions from all of the band members, INXS had never been this exciting and stole the hearts and minds of the Australian record-buying public with 4 strong singles: Original Sin, I send a message, Burn for you and Dancing on the Jetty plus the addition of many great album tracks that pervaded the Australasian sound waves over 1984-85.
So check this fantastic deep dive into all things related to The Swing and reminisce and bask in what was INXS’ classic magnus opus.

Bee and I are both pumped to be bringing you our second band member deep dive, in this week’s episode of INXS: Access all Areas podcast.
Kirk has always been the “versatile one” with his talented musicianship, multi-instrumentalist skills, and sublime backup vocals to Michael’s sultry lyrics. Always one to give his time and energy to promoting the band, Kirk’s legacy is most profound on Never Tear us Apart both on vinyl and at Wembley. A true legend of INXS and a classy individual too.

With our first two episodes in the can, INXS: Access all Areas decides to dive deep and attempt to “define the undefinable” that being what was INXS. A band of many styles, influences, and sounds that simply couldn’t be pigeonholed by the critics and wider media.
With their broad abilities to play many genres such as funk, rock, dance, ska, soul, and R&B, we celebrate and acknowledge all these particular sounds in their repertoire. Plus we launch the exciting new segment “Pleasure and Pain” whereby Bee and I travel back to 1977 and see if the sounds of our youth still connect in 2020.
So buckle up and continue the journey that is the only 100% weekly INXS dedicated podcast on the planet.
