In his case, a Rolex Explorer 1016. “A gentleman’s choice of timepiece says as much about him as does his Saville Row suit.”

In today’s all new Comics of Bond, JBR episode, Jack Lugo and Dan Gale interview legendary comicbook artist and writer Mike Grell. From 1989-1990 Mike Grell created arguably the best Bond comic original series, Permission To Die. The 3 issue comic reads very much like a lost Bond film delivering an unparalleled reading experience that still holds up very nicely to this very day. Set during the Cold War, Permission To Die finds Bond tasked with rescuing the niece of a scientist with launching technology that can seemingly help serve the interests of western governments. When the scientist turns out to be a megalomaniac hellbent on destruction for what he believes to be the betterment of mankind, Bond must do everything he can to stop him. Grell also wrote and drew the comic book adaptation of Licence To Kill in 1989. Jack and Dan take a deep dive into the story behind Mike Grell’s work on his Bond comics finding out about Grell’s influences, his life, and career. Permission To Die contains a number of references and homages Bond fans will deeply appreciate including Bond in a kilt during the pre-titles action sequence as well as the inclusion of Kerim Bey’s daughter as a key character in one of the issues. You don’t want to miss this Comics of Bond JBR episode!

Sir Sean Connery sadly passed away aged 90 on October 31st, 2020. As the original big screen 007, and the man who started it all, we decided to suspend our regular programming and put together a tribute to the great man.

Over the next 3+ hours we come together to talk through our favourite Connery memories and moments, before handing the microphone over to the wider James Bond Radio family. JBR listeners around the world phoned in with messages for the legendary Scotsman, and we've included each and every one of them in this week's episode.

Lots of people love James Bond. But how many have actually been Bond? The Many Lives of James Bond offers the largest ever collection of original interviews with actors who have played Bond in different media, as well as in-depth interviews with many of the diverse artists who have contributed their talents to the making of James Bond movies, television shows, novels, radio dramas, comic books, and video games.

These wide-ranging interviews provide a behind-the-scenes look at the artists' goals, the challenges they faced, and how they met them This book is also the first to examine the Bond character through eyes of the artists who interpret him. As the author talked with these creative people, a through line emerged. It involves a series of related fundamental questions about Bond that artists must reckon with when interpreting Bond.

Who is James Bond and what, if anything, beyond successfully completing a mission does he really want? What drives him? Why did he become an agent? What is the nature of his inner-life? Would he be capable of a satisfying life away from high-octane adventure and danger?

This is a bit of a heartfelt message, but with so many ongoing things at the moment, unfortunately, I'll be stepping away from JBR for the foreseeable future.

It's been such a fun five years of Bondage. I'm incredibly proud of what JBR has become. It was brilliant to meet so many fellow Bond geeks, and it was especially cool seeing all the JBR communities spring up around the globe, but the time has come for me to move on.

Sometimes life gets in the way of Bond, and sadly this is one of those times.

What can I say? After 5 years and 2 million downloads, I'm of course gutted to see our man in Cardiff go, but like all good things, it has to come to an end eventually.

As far as the future of the podcast goes? I'm not yet sure. I'll be thinking things through over the next few weeks. Ultimately I need to go with what feels right in my gut. Whether that's following Chris' lead and bowing out gracefully, or coming back with a kiss kiss bang bang. I'm sure with a bit of reflection the right decision will come soon enough.

Bond 25 has it's new director!

A tweet posted to the official James Bond account reads: "Michael G Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig announced today that Bond 25 will begin filming at Pinewood Studios on 4 March 2019 under the helm of director Cary Joji Fukunaga, with a worldwide release date of 14 February 2020."

"We are delighted to be working with Cary. His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure." said Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

We certainly weren't expecting to see this news today. Danny Boyle has exited Bond 25 due to “creative differences.”

Making the announcement on Twitter the post read - “Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig today announced that due to creative differences Danny Boyle has decided to no longer direct Bond 25.”

JBR returns with something completely different this week. This time we're taking a chapter by chapter look at Christopher Wood's novelisation of The Spy Who Loved Me.

Until 2002, this film tended to be the butt of many a joke. "Bond in space? Come oooon" and "That's the crazy one that's a bit like Star Wars, right?" have been common remarks throughout the years. 

So it's time for Tom & Chris, your intrepid Bond reporters to revisit what was once one of the most controversial among fans and see how it stands up today.

The list doesn't end there either. Nikki was involved in a total of 10 Bond films with Moonraker being her last. 

This is another behind the scenes interview with someone who was there from the very beginning of the cinematic Bond. You'll hear tales of hanging out on set with Gert Frobe during the filming of Goldfinger, you'll hear how she revoiced the entire female cast of Dr. No (with the exception of Moneypenny and Miss Taro) and maybe...just maybe you might even hear Nikki performing a line of Bond girl dialogue too.

With today's episode we hit the mother load. To follow up our last "Battle for Bond" podcast with author Robert Sellers, we're interviewing Sylvan Mason, the daughter of snubbed Thunderball screenwriter Jack Whittingham.

Words cannot describe how excited we were to actually hear the story first hand from someone who was involved and actually there at the time. Sylvan's unique perspective really does shed some light on what really happened with Thunderball. 

Not only that, we get to see Whittingham's scrapbook that follows the court battle from start to finish and see a copy of the very book, complete with hand written annotations that Kevin McClory's lawyer used in the case.
