Nyakio Grieco is a serial beauty entrepreneur. She’s the founder and creator of Nyakio Beauty, an award-winning skincare brand that paid homage to her beauty secrets learned as a child while visiting her grandmother and watching her use coffee beans to exfoliate her skin. In 2016, she sold the brand to Unilever and it’s now exclusively sold at Target with cult-favorite SKUs like their Cleansing Oil Balm and Rescue Oil. Today, she’s using her two decades worth of expertise in the beauty industry to launch a much needed business aimed at building a more inclusive beauty industry. Earlier this month, she co-launched Thirteen Lune, an e-commerce destination designed to inspire the discovery of beauty brands created by Black and Brown founders that resonate with people of all colors. The website sells products made for all people by BIPOC-owned brands, features a through fully curated selection of products made specifically for Black and Brown people, and emphasizes ally brands that have made a measurable effort to create an inclusive product lineup. Launched with thirteen brands, an editorial platform, and a long list of allies, also known as their “Vanguard,” Thirteen Lune's mission is to reframe how Black and Brown beauty brands are perceived not only from an industry perspective, but also for the consumer, giving each brand a platform to sell, educate, and engage with wider audience like never before. In this episode, Nyakio tells us about her experience building a beauty business pre-social media, a behind-the-scenes look at creating Thirteen Lune, and how everyone can take part in pushing their message of inclusivity forward.
