"Hello Everybody,
For those forum members who have been using Linux for a good long while now (at least a few years):
As you learned the ropes of how the whole Linux Distro ecosystem works, what sorts of guidelines did you make for yourself, to minimize the various sorts of stress of being faced with such a wide range of choices in this ecosystem?
How did you set your sights on tighter groupings of choices, when you realized that it would be effectively impossible to try every distro, every desktop environment, every piece of software which could possibly meet some need that you had?
What did you do, to try to simplify things (and manage the complexity, so it didn’t get out of hand)? Did these approaches work, generally speaking, over the longer term?
What did you decide you wanted to seek out, from a technical perspective, which would keep your Linux journey the most stress-free? (Seeking answers on forums, podcasts, instructional videos, etc. is an obvious answer here, no need to mention it).
Likewise to 4, what did you decide you wanted to avoid?"

esbeeb says "We just probably need to hire great UX people to improve the workflow of the apps. Totally agree. UX means so very very much to overall success these days. But many Linux geeks seem to have this puzzlingly locked-on focus on super low level things, quibbling a little too much about totally revamping major low-level subsystems that unfortunately only make things just a little bit better, at the end of the day. If they took that same attention to detail to the UX, they would make 10x the impact on the world, IMHO.
jastombaugh says “@gabmus Absolutely perfectly worded!!! Thank you for posting this. Your point makes total sense, and I wish I had the power to point this out in so many other forums and on a host of podcasts. There is a huge need for Open Source UX designers. I just wish we had the ‘Designers Toolkit’ that could enable these people to ‘rearrange a programs ‘flowchart’ of operations’ or ‘grab an icon/window element’ and edit it. Obviously, I can’t begin to imagine what kind of a powerful program it would take to implement this. But if there was only some way that would enable OS UX Designers to apply ‘UX-Interfaces’ to applications in a similar way that themes can be applied to Desktop Environments. I can dream, can’t I?”

Comments from the Destination Linux Discourse about the Linux Mint vs Snaps discussion:
Ethanol says “…Personally I don’t mind what Mint is doing. It’s kind of like the whole telemetry debate. I’d rather my system presume non-consent until I explicitly give it. If Mint wants to forbid snapd from being automatically installed that’s peachy, since I already expect to have to manually install it when I want it anyways, like most things.”
BertN45 says “Basically I prefer snaps and if available I want to install them. But after installing LibreOffice in a snap, I detected that I lost access to the Dutch language libraries and installing it again did not work for the snap. So I had to delete the snap again. I’m interested how the snap people want to work with language dependencies. If they can’t solve this major issue, snaps are for the USA, UK and some other larger countries only!”
jastombaugh says “Well said. I agree with Clem’s approach and, in general, I totally understand and approve of the Mint philosophy on issues like this. It feels like we NEED both outlooks, like poles, in the linux-phere because of the innovation AND the safeguards they bring to the users.”
ak2020 says “Although I don’t use Linux Mint myself, I’ve generally thought of their team to be fairly in-touch with their community. Having watched this video I agree Linux Mint are overreacting and taking away choice from their community by making it so hard to install snaps. I still think if they want to become independent of Ubuntu for whatever reason, first-off they should base directly on Debian, secondly, yes, why don’t they have their own infrastructure if they want that much independence and control?”
Ulfnic says “It’s like Debian and Mint both saying… “hey man, we’re cool letting you have this but we want you to take a few extra steps to make sure you understand this goes outside of the ethics you chose us for and we’re just making sure you really know” and in Mint’s case, that step is a single terminal command.”

In the DLN Community segment, there was a post in the Destination Linux Network Discourse forum about learning computer programming, specifically which languages are worth learning. Eric ignores all that and focuses on the process of actually learning to code and how it's been a series of stops and starts for him.
In case you haven't heard, Linux++ is now on Front Page Linux. Linux++ is a weekly dive into the major topics, events, and headlines throughout the Linux world published by Eric Londo. Eric is an environmental engineer with a passion in software development, the open-source software community, and especially the GNU/Linux OS. His take on the events of the week are in-depth, concise and well researched. It's an excellent resource for all things Linux and Open Source and we highly recommend checking it out.
On Hardware Addicts episode 8 they discuss new AMD laptop processors featuring a lower TDP (thermal design power) which promises lower heat output and better battery life. This gets us thinking about the race to the middle that the ARM and x86 CPU architectures seem to be engaged in.
Also on Hardware Addicts episode 8, the topic of USB audio devices was discussed which led Nate to wonder if having a hardware solution for audio is a better choice than controlling things in software with the likes of PulseAudio.
That's all for this episode. Be sure to stop by DLN's Discourse, Telegram, Mumble and Discord servers to continue the discussion. More information about this show and other Destination Linux Network shows and creators (like Eric and Nate for example) is available at destinationlinux.network.

On DLN Xtend Episode 20, Eric tests some new distribution releases including Ubuntu 20.04, Deepin 20, and EndeavourOS. He also provides another thrilling update on the closet studio project. Nate talks about updating a very out of date copy of openSUSE and decides to take the plunge on the PinePhone.

Destination Linux had Vinzenz Vietzke of Tuxedo Computers as a guest who explained their stance on consumer's right to repair. We are firm believers in this right and delve into this as well as planned obsolescence common in many electronics.
The Destination Linux Network launched a new website recently called Front Page Linux. This is a news and commentary site focused on Linux, Open Source, community and more. Eric has already published several articles and Nate is planning to do so soon.
The Ask Noah Show recently discussed the art of troubleshooting and what's involved with being an effective problem solver. We touch on how troubleshooting has played a big part in our lives and how we are passing it on to our children.

Turns out, there is a very easy way to accomplish this with obs-websocket and OBS Tablet Remote. Thanks to Venn Stone of LinuxGameCast for the tutorial.

Dalton Durst from the UBports project was a guest host on Destination Linux. They discussed the PinePhone Braveheart edition and how UBports was progressing on the device. We, of course, couldn't be happier about the prospect of a Linux smartphone.
On the Ask Noah show, Noah doesn't see a place for rolling release distros. We disagree and think they serve a need just as fixed release distributions do.
Jason Evangehlo of Linux for Everyone covers the negativity surrounding proprietary software and dual booting. It's an attitude that bothers us as well.

This week's Community Focus covers a Discourse forum post entitled Giving Back to OUR Community which discusses donating to open source projects as well as content creators. We cover commercial use of open source and how if companies that benefit financially would contribute back to the projects they use those projects would likely make enough revenue to cover their costs and then some. Mentioned in this discussion is the recent dilemma that the Pods Framework find themselves after their main financial contributor chose to not continue their support.
DasGeek's YouTube Channel reaches a milestone and passes 10,000 subscribers. Ryan does a great job reviewing hardware but, more importantly, following up and making more videos about the same hardware over time so you can find out what it's like to use it over time. That's often not the case with many YouTube tech channels.
Destination Linux provided an update on the FreeGeek fund raising effort. The goal was $3,000 and, thanks to Zeb's 24 stream, we are well on our way. He raised over $1,500 so again, congratulations to him and the entire Destination Linux Network community for such generosity.
Destination Linux covered the release of Kdenlive 19.12. Nate has been using it to edit his videos and gives feedback.
And finally, darktable version 3.0.0 has been released. darktable is an open source photography workflow application. We are not photographers so we wanted to get a power user's take. Luckily, friend of DLN Wendy Hill was available. Wendy has appeared as a guest host on Destination Linux and is a professional photographer specializing in business-to-business photography including food, product, and location image creation. She uses Linux for her business and darktable is one of the tools she uses for her images. We discuss what darktable is, how she uses it and what's interesting about this latest release.

We've been busy with the holidays and took a short break. We're back with a new episode to start 2020. In this edition, we cover what we've done these past few weeks. Nate tells us more about his holiday lighting project and Eric talks about EndeavourOS, Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix and that leads us into a discussion on how Linux distributions differentiate themselves.
We received some listener feedback from Anthony Lavado of the Jellyfin project which leads to a discussion on home media servers like Jellyfin, Plex and Emby.

Destination Linux covered the Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix releases and pondered the merit of an Ubuntu Cinnamon flavor. There was a lot of talk about Linux Mint already filling that space but I disagree.
This Week in Linux covered the release of Feren OS which was recently made available. It's a fascinating example of what someone can achieve in the open source world. We discuss the merits of Feren OS and lovingly poke a bit of fun at its creator.
Lastly, our friend Zeb undertook a monumental 24 live stream on his Zebedee Gaming YouTube channel. He was raising money for DLN's first charity collaboration with FreeGeek. The total came out to an impressive $1,500. Congratulations to Zeb and FreeGeek. Certainly a great way to end the year!

In the first regular episode of DLN Xtend we take a little time to introduce ourselves. Topics covered include a discussion on Ubuntu 19.10 experimental ZFS support and how that might be used in future releases, desktop Linux evangelism, anonymity on the Internet, privacy trade-offs, as well as corporate and governmental oversteps, and Xfce versus KDE Plasma resource usage.
In this, our preview DLN Xtend episode, we discuss the (unusual?) concept of Linux flagship devices, the pros and cons of rolling releases on the server side, the continuing trend of removing support for older hardware in many Linux distributions and a brief look at some of the highlights in the Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine release.
Fun fact. Nate and I did this as a test recording that we assumed we wouldn't use. Turns out the DLN crew liked it and suggested we publish it. Who are we to refuse? All kidding aside, this is our first go at this and so we ask for some patience and also any feedback you might have. Please stop by the DLN Discourse, Telegram, Mumble and Discord to let us know what you think.
