Lovecars On the Grid. Global Motorsport Podcast
Welcome to episode 26 of the Lovecars On The Grid Podcast! Tiff Needell and Paul Woodman bring us another roundup of motorsport events from the past week!
This week, we've had the safari rally, Moto GP, NASCAR and of course the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK!
We kick off with the WRC Safari Rally in Kenya. Toyota had an epic weekend, with their cars completing the top 4! Hyundai were in 5th, with Ford finishing in 6th, 7th and 8th place. The win went to Kalle Rovanpera, with Welsh driver, Elfyn Evans as runner up. With the new hybrid vehicles, marshalls were stopping fans from helping drivers right their crashed cars. Apparently, with a risk of electrocution, fans are no longer allowed to interfere!
The British Touring cars were racing this weekend too. The cars were at Croft, where Hyundai took at 1-2 with Dan Lloyd taking the double header win ahead of Tom Ingram in 2nd place. Tom Ingram still remains at the top of the table for the Championship though.
Moto GP was potentially the most exciting race of the weekend, at Assen. Fabio Quartarar took out his main rival, Aleix Espargaro, who had an amazing fight back through the field, achieving a 4th place result! Both touring cars and Moto GP now have a 5 week Summer break!
NASCAR were racing at Nashville, which unfortunately had a 2 hour break due to the rain. There were plenty of moments, with lots of spins and crashes, but the win went to Chase Elliot, followed by Kyle Busch.
Paul attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, and even managed to get a fast run up the hill in a Caterham 420 Cup car. Mixing amongst drivers like Nigel Mansell and other celebrities, it was a fantastic weekend with new cars such as the BMW M3 Touring being revealed. The McMurtry Spierling electric vehicle, with ex-Formula 1 driver, Max Chilton managed to set a new Goodwood hillclimb record, with a time of 39.08, which beat the previous record held by Nick Heidfeld back in 1999. It was also faster than the Volkswagen ID.R.
Next weekend, we have the British Grand Prix at Silverstone! There's also the W Series there to support, with Formula 2, Formula 3 and the Porsche supercup! There's also Indycar at Ohio, with NASCAR at Road America and Formula E at Marrakesh.
In Formula 1, Pierre Gasly has just re-signed for another year with Alpha Tauri. Red Bull reserve driver, Juri Vips has been suspended by the team after racial slurs in racing online.
