The Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) is a collegiate competition challenges students to design, build, operate solar powered houses. SDME is organised under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council. The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and the US Department of Energy signed an agreement to collaborate on the development of SDME in November 2018- November 2021 at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park; a competition that will integrate unique local and regional characteristics. All proposals focus on solving the issues and needs for the sustainable living in the Middle East, where high temperatures, high humidity and dust condition. International teams enter the challenge for the opportunity to win prizes totalling AED 10 million.
Team ESTEEM is Heriot-Watt University’s official entrant into the Solar Decathlon Middle East 2020 competition, but also the sole UK finalist! This contest is integrated with the World Expo in Dubai which envisions an estimated 25 million visitors. Their goal is to design & build a multifunctional solar powered house in collaboration with industry and academia. Thus, the design ethos emphasises sustainability & innovative wall-to-wall constructional elements with the aspiration to achieve the most eco-friendly build. Our smart home aims to withstand the high temperatures, humidity & dusty conditions prevalent in the Middle East. Headquartered in Edinburgh, we are proud to represent the Scottish Construction and Building Services sectors on the international stage with our incorporation of materials and designs from several sponsors; local & worldwide.
