St. Thomas affirms that allegorical interpretation is not for the proving of doctrine "But to the destruction of errors one proceeds only through the literal sense, because other senses are accepted by similitudes, and the argument cannot be derived from similitudes of expressions" (In 1 Sent., Prol., Q.5), those who hold to material sufficency hold that every doctrine must be from scripture, yet the Bodily assumption is not present in scripture in the literal sense.
