On a fall night in 1987, a young woman was walking down the middle of a dark street in a rural Kentucky town. She heard a car turn onto the street behind her, and it sounded like it was driving fast, so she quickly got onto the sidewalk. Suddenly, the car screeched to a stop just a few feet away from her. The car doors flew open, and before the young woman knew what was happening, someone grabbed her, lifted her off the ground, and threw her into the backseat. The car sped off, and the terrified young woman would soon find herself in the middle of a horrific nightmare that would haunt her for almost 20 years…

Several years ago, prank videos were huge on YouTube. Basically, a Prank YouTube channel would go out in public, and they would do something to some unsuspecting person and they’d film it. And that video would get tons of views on YouTube. Well, during this prank heyday, there was one YouTube channel that pulled off a prank that really stood out amongst the thousands of others that were getting pumped out around this time. And the reason this particular prank stood out was because 1) it was masterfully planned, 2) it was brilliantly executed, and 3) most memorably, it had massive intended and unintended consequences – international scandal-level consequences. And amazingly, this story has yet to be converted into a major motion picture, so I would imagine that most of you have actually never heard of it.

In January of 2012, a police truck parked on a trail in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California. A member of the K-9 Unit opened the door, and a police dog named Indiana Bones jumped out. Indy quickly caught a scent and led his handler to a mound of dirt just off the path. Indy pawed at the dirt and revealed the top of a plastic bag. The dog’s handler reached into the dirt with her gloved hands, pulled out the bag, looked inside, and saw two dismembered human feet and a hand. Indy’s discovery would launch an investigation that would lead two L.A. detectives into the most insane case they’d ever worked – a case that would involve everything from Mexican drug cartels to a Canadian cannibal.

On a fall night in 1998, a woman walked into her kitchen after being out all day and tossed her keys onto the counter. She saw the light on her answering machine blinking, so she checked the message. At first, it just sounded like static noise, or maybe someone was breathing heavy. And she figured it was either a prank call or someone had just accidentally dialed her number. But then she heard screaming and crying and then it just went silent, and the message ended. For a moment, the woman just stood there, shocked. She tried calling the number back who had left the message, but it went straight to voicemail. Out of fear that this message she had been left potentially just captured the sound of someone being badly hurt, the woman called 911.

On a cold December night in 2013, a 59-year-old widow stood on stage at a square dance club in Arkansas, watching some of her closest friends dance together. The woman had owned and run the square dance club for years, and the people out on the floor were just like family to her. But as she listened to the music and called out different square dance steps, she didn’t notice that one of the dancers had their eyes fixed right on her. And the woman did not know that this dancer had become obsessed with her. In fact, the dancer had started losing sleep just thinking about the woman. And now the dancer had decided it was time to act, because they believed they would never find peace until the object of their obsession was dead.

Today’s story is a good old fashioned spooky story. It’s about a missing person in Taiwan, and it takes a totally bizarre turn, and I will say most of you will probably get the most thrill out of the “apartment scene.” You’ll know that scene when you get to it, and that’s towards the end of this podcast. So, make sure you stick around if you enjoy being spooked.

On a summer morning in 2001, a woman in Alabama woke up in a cold sweat – like she’d just had a nightmare. But the woman knew what she saw while she was sleeping was not a bad dream – it was real. So she grabbed her phone and made a frantic call. Later that morning, police arrived at an old wooden house on the outskirts of a small rural town. They stepped inside, and they were absolutely shocked, because the woman really had led them to a horrifying crime scene.

On a Monday afternoon in 1986, medical staff at a clinic in San Antonio, Texas were starting to get worried, because their most respected nurse had not shown up for work and nobody could get a hold of her. So later that morning, two of the nurse’s colleagues drove down to her apartment. But when they got there, they found two notes taped to the door. They were messages from the nurse’s family, who had been looking for her since the day before. By the time the nurse’s family filed a missing person’s report, investigators at the sheriff’s department were tied up investigating another mystery – the death of a teenage girl found murdered earlier that morning. And after getting the description of the missing nurse, investigators started to wonder if they had a serial killer on their hands who was hunting down blonde women... or if there was some other connection between the women that they just couldn’t see.

On a fall evening in 1996, a young detective sped through the streets of Tucson, Arizona towards an upscale country club. All he knew was that someone had reported an explosion in the area, but he didn’t know what had caused it. Minutes later, the detective pulled into the country club parking lot and as he got out of his car, it almost felt like he had stepped into a war zone. Car alarms were blaring, shattered glass covered the ground, and nearby he saw a car with its roof completely ripped off. The young detective quickly got to work searching the scene – having no idea that he would spend the next 13 years of his life trying to close this case – which would span across the United States and all the way to Europe.

On a Monday afternoon in December 2001, a pair of police officers walked in the side door of a big old farmhouse in the woods in Loudoun County, Virginia. They had just received a frantic 9-1-1 call from a man who said he had found his neighbor horrifically injured on the kitchen floor. The police officers crept through the house, peering cautiously around corners in case the attacker was still in the house. But other than the sound of their footsteps creaking on the hardwood, the home was completely silent. When they made it to the kitchen, they stopped. There, lying on his stomach, was the body of an older man, covered in blood. One of the officers stepped forward and knelt down to check the man’s pulse, but it was obvious to both of them that he was dead. The officer was about to stand back up, when something strange on the back of the man’s neck caught his eye. Slowly, the officer reached out a hand, and pulled down the collar of the man’s shirt. When he saw what was there, he looked back at his partner with an expression of fear. Because what he had discovered would lead investigators to wonder if there were devil-worshiping occultists prowling their rural community.

In April 2009, in a crowded shopping center in broad daylight, a young woman was walking to her car, when suddenly a strange-looking man came out of some bushes and rushed toward her. The woman tried to get to her car and escape, but the man was too fast – he blocked her way and pulled out a gun. He put the gun to the woman’s head, and before she could even process what was happening, he fired. The woman fell to the ground and died. Then the man turned, calmly walked into the nearby woods, and disappeared. When police arrived, they found a baby in the backseat of the woman’s car – confused but unharmed. But they did not find a single piece of evidence at the scene, or any clue about the identity of the strange-looking man.

On a summer night in 1980, the audience in New York’s world famous Metropolitan Opera House rose to their feet and applauded at the end of an international ballet performance. The dancers and musicians rushed backstage and congratulated each other on a great show, but one of the musicians was missing. Her prized violin sat on a chair in the orchestra pit. She had left it there during intermission of the ballet, and she had never come back. NYPD Detectives would soon descend on the Met, where they would find themselves chasing down stagehands, musicians, and one of the most famous Russian dancers in the world, desperately trying to discover what had happened to the violin player who just disappeared – while thousands of people were in the audience.

On the day after Thanksgiving in 1998, a police officer responded to a 9-1-1 call at an apartment in a Florida beach town. But the 9-1-1 call had been vague, so the officer did not know if he was responding to an accident, a break-in, or something else. He knocked on the front door, and nobody answered. He tried the doorknob, but it was locked. So the officer walked around the outside of the apartment, and he found an open window that led into the kitchen. The officer climbed in the window, and then made his way through the apartment – everything looked totally normal. Then he came to a door that was slightly cracked open. The officer opened the door, stepped into a small bedroom, and screamed, “Oh my God!”

On a spring night in 2009, a middle aged married couple was closing up the local pizza place they ran in a small Virginia mountain town. The husband walked to the back of the restaurant and grabbed a large bucket of ice. He carried the bucket out the back door, and dumped the ice into the grass. He stood up and felt the cool breeze on his face – it was a nice change from the hot pizza ovens he’d been working around all night. But then, he heard screaming coming from inside the restaurant. Without thinking, he dropped the bucket, and rushed back inside. But when he discovered what was happening, all he could do was turn around and run for his life.

On a February night in a secluded suburban neighborhood, a man sat down to eat at his dining room table. When suddenly, he heard a "POP, POP, POP" coming from somewhere nearby. The man dropped his fork on the plate and ran to the window at the front of his house, but everything outside looked completely normal and calm. Still, the man could not shake the feeling that something bad might have just happened. So he called the police and explained what happened, and they sent an officer out to investigate. But the officer saw the same thing the man had seen – everything looked normal and calm. So the police officer went back to the station, and the man finished his dinner. And neither imagined that a dead body would lay there, undiscovered in the neighborhood, for almost two full days.

On a hot summer day in Illinois, police officers made their way through a field out in the middle of nowhere. They pushed aside the tall grass, and they could see and hear flies buzzing all around them. Suddenly, the officer at the front of the group stopped, crouched down, and called back to the others – he had finally found the body. The other officers rushed to him, and they all stared down at the dead young woman. The cops knew something like this would leave people in the small town nearby in complete shock, but they had no idea what their discovery would lead to. Because this dead young woman in the field would soon help solve a murder that had taken place across the border in Indiana, and lead police to a killer who had been on the run for two years.

Just before dawn on the last Saturday of June 2013, an employee at a Toys ‘R’ Us store in upstate New York was working in the stock room, when suddenly he heard an alarm going off somewhere inside the store. He radioed his manager to turn off that alarm, but the manager didn’t respond. Another employee went to the front office to check on the manager, and they found him unconscious and bleeding from a hole in his chest. Police and paramedics responded and rushed the man to the hospital, but sadly, he was dead on arrival. The store had been locked all morning, and the four surviving employees had been working in separate parts of the store. Each of them claimed to have seen nothing out of the ordinary that morning. And all investigators had to help them find the manager’s killer was surveillance footage of a shadowy figure moving in and out of the security camera’s view, almost like they were toying with the police.

On a winter morning in 2014, a woman walked through a massive two-story house in the beautiful ski town of Aspen, Colorado. She had come to see her friend, who’d just gotten back from a long vacation. The woman walked into the bedroom, but her friend wasn’t there. She called out, but there was no response. So she walked across the room and opened the door to a huge walk-in closet that her friend had transformed into a meditation room. The woman saw prayer flags hanging from the wall and candles spread out across the room. She glanced down and saw a pile of blankets and sheets on the floor. At first, she didn’t think anything about it – maybe her friend laid on the blankets and sheets when she was meditating. But as the woman turned to go, something caught her eye. She leaned down, looked closer at the blankets, and screamed. Beneath the blankets, she saw strands of her friend’s long blonde hair soaked in blood. With her hands shaking, she grabbed her phone and called the police. She told them that one of the richest and most well known women in Aspen had been murdered.

On a quiet morning in 1995, police cruisers, fire trucks, and ambulances raced down the road in a Queens, New York neighborhood toward an abandoned house that had caught on fire earlier that day. Minutes later, two homicide detectives stepped out of one of the vehicles and made their way inside the smoldering structure. After going down a hallway, they found a door that led to the basement. They descended the stairs, and when they reached the bottom, they froze, because there was something horrifying int he middle of the room. A dead body strapped to a chair. Neither man said a word. They just stared silently – praying – that this person had died before the mutilation had begun.

At around 2 p.m. on March 23, 2015, a 911 call came in to the Vallejo, California police department from this man who sounded totally drunk or high on a drug, claiming that his girlfriend was missing and she had been kidnapped. But his story just didn't make any sense. When the officers got to this man’s house, he looked deranged, and his house looked totally off and had this weird chemical smell. And then when they asked him to give them some information, he would launch into this bizarre story about men in wetsuits with lasers on their hands. But the police would follow up and actually launch an investigation, because this guy’s girlfriend really was missing... and they would uncover a story that was even more bizarre than the 911 caller’s story had been.

On a summer day in 1986, a medical examiner and her assistant stared down at a deceased woman lying on the metal table. Neither of them had ever seen anything like this, the woman appeared to have been completely healthy at the time of her death - she didn't have a stroke, there was no heart attack and there was no sign of a drug overdose. However, this seemingly healthy woman had suddenly collapsed on the floor and been brain dead just minutes later. Just then the assistant took a long deep breath in through her nose, and after she did she looked over at the medical examiner with wide eyes. The medical examiner did the same thing and took a long deep breath in through her nose. They both smelled a very strange odor, and it smelled almost like almonds. The medical examiner could hardly believe it, she'd only heard about something like this happening in movies and detective novels. But that smell meant one thing to her and to the assistant, this deceased woman must have been poisoned with cyanide. And this theory would soon lead to a large scale investigation by local police and the FBI, and what they would find would casue panic across the entire United States.

On the morning of July 7th, 2019, Sergeant Dan Birbeck responded to a call at the home of a 49-year-old woman in a small Texas town. Birbeck got to the house and found a bloody crime scene in the master bedroom – evidence that a violent struggle had taken place there. Three other members of the family were home that night and had been in close proximity to the master bedroom – and none of them heard a thing. The victim’s husband had been asleep on the couch just steps away from the master bedroom. The victim’s teenage daughter was asleep in the room just next door. And the victim’s son had been in an upstairs bedroom playing video games all night. It seemed inconceivable to Sergeant Birbeck that a violent attack could have taken place in one room, while members of the family slept through it or played video games without hearing anything. Birbeck believed something sinister had happened in the house that night, and the family members might be in on it. But the sergeant had a problem… the victim of this apparent crime was nowhere to be found.

One Monday morning in May of 2010, a classroom full of sixth graders sat at their desks waiting for their substitute teacher to arrive. But the morning bell rang, and the substitute never showed. A passing administrator noticed the substitute’s absence, and he hurried to the front office to find out what was going on. This substitute had always been reliable, and it was not like her to just not show up for work. The administrator rushed to the office and called the substitute’s son. And he went to his mom’s house to see if everything was ok, and he found his mom sitting at her computer. But when he got closer, something terrified him – his mom’s hand had turned purple. He called 911, and police quickly arrived. And what they found inside the rest of the house would turn a small, wealthy community completely upside down.

On the afternoon of September 10, 2009, an art student walked inside her off-campus apartment in Dallas, Texas, and immediately began making herself a late lunch. Her roommate didn't come out of her bedroom to greet her, but to be honest, this wasn't totally unusual. The two of them, despite being roommates, were not actually very close at all. After eating their food, the student studied for a while, then watched some TV, and then went to bed. All the while, still never hearing a sound coming out of her roommate's bedroom. But again, this was normal. That is, until the next day, when the student received a call from their school telling her to go back to her apartment to check on her roommate. Because, apparently, the roommate's mother was very concerned about them. The student was annoyed, but went back to the apartment. And when they walked into their roommate's bedroom, they would see something that would haunt them for years. And it would instantly explain why their roommate would not come out of their room.

In April of 1990, a bleary-eyed detective stepped into a townhouse in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The detective had been on call for days, and all he wanted to do was sleep. But now, he’d been called in to investigate a double homicide. The detective opened the door to the basement, and started walking down the steps. The overhead light cast shadows on the floor below, so he couldn’t get a clear look at what he was walking into. Then the detective reached the bottom of the steps, and he suddenly felt wide awake. The scene in the basement was far more gruesome than he’d imagined – two dead bodies lay there on the floor. And there was one thing that jumped out at the detective immediately. On a cardboard box sitting between the bodies, a heart and the letter “U” was scrawled in blood. The detective had no idea if one of the victims had left the message, or if this was a scene staged by a deranged killer… and it would take him six months to get the answer he was looking for… and to discover what really happened in that basement.

On an evening in 2010, a driver pulled over and parked their car on a residential street, trembling with fear. The driver looked to the passenger seat and saw a six foot tall demon sitting there. And when the demon spoke, it sounded like the famous 1970s R&B and soul singer, Barry White. This demon told the driver there was no need to fear, but they had been chosen for an important mission. Suddenly, the demon disappeared, and an angel who sounded like the actress Olivia Newton-John took its place. And the angel said the demon was right – the driver was the only one who could fulfill this mission of cosmic proportions. So soon, the driver would take up the mission laid out by the angel, and that mission would end in blood, murder, and the most bizarre case local police had ever seen.

On a cool, spring evening in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a man burst out of a bar and started running down the sidewalk, chasing a woman who had suddenly stormed outside in the middle of their conversation. The guy grabbed the woman’s arm, and she spun around to look at him with a furious expression on her face. He asked her what was going on, and she slurred her words as she said that she didn’t want to talk about it. The guy asked her to please come inside — it was dark and she shouldn’t be walking alone at night. But this just made her even more upset. She started pounding her fists into the guy’s chest and screaming at him to leave her alone. The man backed up so she would stop hitting him, and he asked her again to just calm down and come back into the bar. But she refused. She turned around and started speed-walking away from him. The guy didn’t know what else to do, so he went back into the bar by himself. But what he learned the very next day would keep him awake at night for years, wishing he had tried to chase the woman down a second time.

At 6:45 AM on an ordinary Tuesday in Salt Lake City, Utah, a father and son lugged a heavy jewelry case into the lobby of a high-rise building. They ran a jewelry store together on the third floor, and had come in early to set up their new display. They heard the lobby door open behind them and turned to see a man holding a cardboard box. The man said he was making a delivery and asked where the elevator was. The father and his son were heading that way, too — so, all three got on the elevator together. As they stood, the father looked at the box the man was carrying. There was a name written on the top in black marker, but no return address, which seemed odd. And the man didn’t really look like a delivery driver, either. He was wearing a green letterman jacket, like a high school athlete would wear. But the father kept his thoughts to himself. When the elevator doors opened to the third floor, he and his son carried their jewelry case out and went on with their day. Later that morning, a firefighter pounded on the jewelry shop door and said that the building was being evacuated. The father and son rushed outside, where they saw fire trucks, police cars, and a crowd of other people who worked inside the building. As a woman in the crowd filled them in about what had just happened, a horrible realization dawned on the jewelry shop owner: That delivery man was not who he claimed to be — and the cardboard box contained something more sinister than anything the shop owner could have imagined.

On September 6th, 1988, a middle aged woman named Cindy Borton, was washing dishes in her little house in Shenandoah, Iowa. As she did this, she heard a knock on her back door. She glanced at her watch and saw that she only had a few minutes before she had to get ready for work, and so she just hoped that whoever was there, was not expecting a long visit.… A few hours later, the police would arrive at Cindy’s house and they would discover a crime scene so gruesome, that they had to call in a special investigative unit just to process it.

On a January afternoon in 2015, a medical examiner stood over a dead woman’s body in the county morgue. He’d already opened up the woman’s abdomen, and he was using his scalpel to cut the tissues around her stomach. The woman had been murdered, and the medical examiner had already determined her cause of death — but now, he was searching for something specific. He placed the stomach on a metal tray and sliced it open, revealing everything she’d eaten before her death. To his surprise, there was almost nothing there, which meant the woman hadn’t eaten for several hours. This struck the medical examiner as very odd, because detectives had told him that the woman bought Mexican food less than half an hour before her death, and they found the empty wrapper at the crime scene. But if the murder victim didn’t eat it, that left only one other possibility: her killer did. The medical examiner put his scalpel down and looked at the woman on his autopsy table. He tried to imagine what sort of person would want to murder her and then eat her lunch, while standing right beside her body.

In February of 1983, a young police officer arrived at what looked like a normal, residential home in Mobile, Alabama – but the officer already knew that there was more to this house than met the eye. Just a few minutes earlier, an emergency medical technician had called to tell the officer that there was something inside the home he should really see. The officer opened up the front door and walked into the living room, where first responders were huddled around a man’s dead body. The owner of the home had died by suicide, but that wasn’t what the EMT was talking about. The officer walked right past the commotion and into the homeowner’s bedroom. There, he stopped dead in his tracks. What he found was one of the strangest and most chilling things he’d seen in his entire career. But even as he stood staring at this bizarre scene, he felt a sudden rush of hope. Because he was pretty sure he had just found the answer to one of the city’s most notorious crimes.

On an early June morning in 2012, a successful luxury car salesman slept soundly in his bed inside of his high rise apartment. The man was a heavy sleeper, so he didn’t wake up when someone walked into his room, walked across to his bed side, and then just stood there, standing over him watching him sleep. Almost two days later, the sleeping man was found still lying in his bed, but with a blood-spattered bedsheet pulled up to his mouth. His family was left in complete shock, and a young detective would spend over a year trying to figure out why the man had never woken up.

On a hot summer night in Arizona, a man slept soundly in his second-floor bedroom with his beloved pit bull terrier curled up at his feet. Suddenly, the dog’s ears perked up. A sound came from the roof, then the bedroom window shattered and sent glass flying across the room. But no matter how much the dog barked, his owner didn't move. What happened in that bedroom would give a rookie homicide detective her first major case – a case with a series of twists that seemed to come right out of a soap opera.

In the fall of 1994, a 52-year-old woman pulled into the driveway of her home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and then turned her car off. As she sat there for a minute, chatting with her daughter on her car phone, she was suddenly startled by someone running up and knocking on her window. When she turned to see who it was, she saw this big guy standing in the driveway who she didn't recognize. But when she rolled the window down just a couple of inches, and she was able to hear what this guy was saying, the woman relaxed. Then she got out of her car, shut the door behind her, and then led this guy into her home with her… That man would later be dubbed, “The Bathroom Man,” and he was there to do something horrific to that woman.

In 1969, an adventure magazine reporter named Milt Macklin flew to New Guinea with his film crew to shoot a documentary about a missing person. Milt’s hope was that he was actually going to find this missing person and capture it on film, really pushing his documentary over the top. But, despite shooting all this footage and looking all over the place, they never found the missing person. So Milt ultimately went home and put the film in storage and never even watched it. Well, 40 years later that footage got pulled out of storage because another crew wanted to make their own documentary. And when they watched this footage, they found something totally unbelievable on it. So today, I’m going to tell you the story of what they found, and then more importantly, what it revealed about this missing person. And I will say now, it is highly disturbing.

One morning in November of 2011, a wheelchair-bound woman and her full-time caregiver were at home when there was a knock on the front door. The caregiver got up and walked over to the door and opened it up, but there was no one there. And when she looked up and down the road, she didn't see anyone walking or driving away. Then, she looked down and noticed there was what appeared to be a gift on the porch, but there was no tag on it. So, the caregiver brought it inside and put it on the kitchen table, and told the woman she was caring for that because this was not labeled, they shouldn't open it for now. However, later that day, when still they didn't know who had sent it or what it was, the woman in the wheelchair was curious, so she secretly grabbed the gift off the kitchen table and opened it up. And the second she did, absolute chaos ensued...

On the morning of May 26, 1990, Marlene Warren was at home inside of her mansion in Florida when she heard a knock on the door. Marlene was busy and was hoping that her son might go answer the door, but when she looked over to the living room, she saw her son was watching TV and didn't seem to have even heard the knock on the door. So, Marlene just sighed and walked over to the door and opened it up herself. And to her surprise, it was a person dressed up as a clown holding flowers and balloons. Marlene loved clowns, and it had been her birthday recently, so she was thrilled – figuring this must be someone's gift to her. But after the clown handed Marlene the flowers and balloons, there was this loud popping sound inside the house... and then Marlene fell to the floor, blood pouring down her face.

In late July of 1988, two hunters were walking up this steep mountain trail in Colorado looking for a place to set up for the day. As they were walking, they eventually left the trail and began meandering through the trees looking for a clearing. At some point, they spotted one up ahead, but in this clearing was this really bright white thing at the base of one of the trees. So the two hunters walked up to see what this white thing was, and when they saw it, they both knew immediately that this was something no one was supposed to see…

The detectives stared at the man for the longest time, waiting to see if he would tell them anything useful. Finally, the man started looking all around him like he was searching for a hidden camera and said something startling: “Is the CIA here?” The detectives had no idea why the American spy agency would be interested in a Tennessee murder case. One night in November 1999, a deputy was driving along a remote mountain road in Southern California when he spotted a car pulled off to the side of the road. The car’s engine was still on, and the passenger side door was open, but there didn't appear to be anyone inside the car. Now this was a very remote road, so the deputy assumed that the driver must be having some sort of car trouble, otherwise, why stop here? So the deputy pulled over his cruiser and began walking over to the car to see if they needed help. But before he reached the car, the deputy noticed something dangling out of the passenger side door. He reflexively put his hand on his holster and walked the last few feet up to the car. And when he finally could see into the car, he just froze. It looked like a set from a horror movie. Except this was not fake.

10,000 feet up, deep inside of the beautiful Austrian Alps, lies a very unique and not well-known tourist destination. The only way you can get to this destination is to ride a gondola, or if you’re feeling really motivated, you could in theory hike up to it, but very few people do that. Once you reach this tourist destination, you walk over to this string of buildings, and right away you start to see all these warning signs about this area. Telling you that while, of course, it’s stunning and beautiful, remember, it’s also very dangerous. Today I’m going to tell you a horror story that happened at this unique location. And make sure you stick around until the end, because there are actually two plot twists in this story. The first one you might see coming... the second one, you won’t.

On a cold day in January 2008, a woman named Judy got out of her car and hustled across the parking lot toward a church. When she reached the side door, she fumbled around in her pocket for the keys. Once she found the right one, she slid it into the lock, but discovered the door was already unlocked. The woman was immediately annoyed, because these doors were meant to stay locked, so clearly someone had forgot to do that. She pushed the door open and right away noticed the church office door on the other side of the building was open a crack. So she walked right over to see who was in there and to remind them to lock the doors. But when she walked into that office, the locked door quickly became the last of her worries...

On April 26, 2002, a man was walking to his apartment in Raleigh, North Carolina when he noticed something moving around in the bushes. The man looked closer, and to his horror, he saw a "Peeping Tom." A person was literally standing there staring in the window of this young girl's bedroom. The man yelled aggressively at the person, which sent them running for their life. When word spread about this incident, residents of the apartment complex were hopeful that the Peeping Tom was so scared from getting caught, that they would never do it again. But unfortunately, the residents would be wrong, because that Peeping Tom was not just being creepy – no, they were also planning something... something evil.

In 1996, an 18 year old college freshman named Diane, began acting strangely. She would suddenly break down and start crying hysterically, and then a second later, she'd get extremely mad, and then a second after that, she'd be fine again, as if nothing had happened. For a while, her classmates thought her erratic behavior must be tied to her just really missing her boyfriend, who went to another school. But when Diane's classmates finally approached her and asked her what was going on, she gave them an answer that at first sounded so unbelievable, they assumed it was a joke. But Diane wasn't joking, and she had the scars to prove it. Horrified, Diane’s classmates left her bedroom and ran to tell school staff.

In February of 2000, a police officer in a small Missouri town stepped into an apartment where a man had just taken his own life. The officer felt bad for the guy, but at the same time, when he walked in there, he fully expected this to be a pretty straightforward case… man commits suicide, the end. However, after walking over to the body, the officer spotted something odd laying on the ground near the dead man's head. It was a book, and it was open to a page with writing on it. The officer knelt down and read what was on the page, and it sent shivers down his spine. Clearly this writing was meant to be found. But before the police officer could flag this to anyone at the scene, another discovery was made. A video tape was found in the dead man’s trash can, and when the police watched it, lets just say they were not prepared for what they saw.

Just after 11 a.m. on a fall day in 2003, a crime scene analyst named Anna Cox was standing in the middle of a horrific crime scene inside of an apartment near Tampa, Florida. At her feet was a dead body in a pool of blood, and moving all around her were dozens of police officers and other investigators taking photos and collecting evidence. But none of those things or those other people stood out to Anna, because right now, the only thing she could think about was what she saw on the wall. She had never seen anything like this before... well, except for in movies, but no, sure enough, when she walked up to the wall, she realized that the thing that was on the wall was very real. And very, very disturbing. Possibly more disturbing, at least psychologically, than the dead body nearby. And it would be this discovery on the wall that would lead police to one of the coldest killers in Florida history.

In the summer of 2014, a man named Mark Porter sat in the small lobby of a quick service oil change garage. As he waited for his oil change to wrap up, he sipped a cup of coffee and looked out the window. But a minute later, a strange man walked into the shop and despite there being plenty of empty seats, the man sat down right next to Mark. Mark thought this was odd, but he tried not to over think it and just kept on sipping his coffee. The strange man started talking to Mark, just small talk, and Mark responded politely. But when his car was finally done, Mark was very relieved to grab his keys and get out of there. As Mark drove home, he couldn't help but feel like that strange guy was off in some way, there had to be a reason why he just randomly sat down next to Mark despite the open seats, and then why had he tried so hard to strike up a conversation? It all just seemed very odd but by the time Mark got home, he had forgotten about the guy. However, the guy had not forgotten about Mark, because Mark was right to be suspicious. That strange man had a very specific reason for doing what he did, and it was about to have massive ripple effects.

This story is a fan favorite that was previously published as Episode 8.
On Christmas Eve in 1992, an 18-year-old woman named Danita Gullette stepped outside of her place of work into the freezing Dayton, Ohio night air, and began walking toward her mother's house. After a few minutes, Danita decided to call her mother to ask her something that couldn't wait until she arrived. So Danita stopped at a payphone, slipped a few coins into the phone's coin slot, then dialed the number she knew by heart. At her mother's house, the phone started to ring, but when Danita's sister picked up the receiver, the phone was silent. Around the same time, the Dayton police received a call about a disturbance at a payphone in town. This would be the start of one of the most incomprehensible crime sprees in American history.

He couldn't see anything, and his head was in agonizing pain, but somehow, someway he still managed to pull himself up to his feet, and then he staggered his way through the house and made it out the front door to safety. However, there was still someone else in the house behind him. Moments later, a Miami SWAT team entered John's house, and they would make a horrifying discovery in the guest bedroom – one that would stun the wealthy South Florida community, where John and his family had lived and worked for over four decades.

Late one night in the spring of 1937, a young woman stumbled into her apartment building, drunk after a long night of partying with friends. She made her way up the steps, and reached her apartment door. And after she opened it up, she stepped inside, and her little dog ran up to her and she gave it a little pat, and then she walked toward her bedroom. But the moment she stepped foot into that pitch black room, something felt off. It was too quiet. But before she could figure out what was going on, something heavy came flying out of the darkness and hit her on the face. For a moment, the woman just stood there stunned. Then a second later, hands emerged from the darkness.

One summer day in 1978, a man came home from work to his house in a nice neighborhood in Illinois. He went inside the front door and called out to his wife, but she didn't call back. The man looked around the house and was annoyed that it was so dirty. His wife had said she was going to spend the day cleaning, and it seemed like she had not. But after searching the house, he had not found his wife yet, and so he stared to wonder if she was okay. The only place left to check for her was in the basement, so he opened the door and began walking down the stairs. When he got down there, he would come face-to-face with a nightmare.

At around 9:00 PM on September 13th, 2006, a college student walked towards her friend’s apartment in the small town of Valley City, North Dakota. She walked up the steps and was about to knock on her friend's door, when she was hit with this really powerful chemical smell. She looked around wondering where the smell was coming from, and that's when she realized it was coming from her friend's apartment. More confused than worried, the friend knocked on the door, but there was no answer. So she reached down and tried the handle, and it was unlocked, so she opened the door. And when she looked inside, she began to scream.

In the winter of 2001, inside of a Southern California police department, a fax machine in the corner of the room suddenly came to life. A moment later, a few pieces of paper fell into the tray, and an officer walked over and began reading them. As he did, his eyes went wide. The fax was a gold mine of evidence for an ongoing murder investigation that had begun to stall, so this fax was a major breakthrough. But as officers rushed over to see the fax for themselves, they all started to feel like something was off about the fax – it just seemed too good to be true. But regardless, the police followed up on the contents of the fax, and sure enough, it led them to their killer. However, let's just say the killer was not who anyone thought it would be.

In the early morning hours of February 9, 2014, 17-year-old Lexi Sachs was asleep in her bed, inside of her parents' mansion in San Juan Capistrano, California – one of the nicest and most affluent neighborhoods in the country. And as she lay there, suddenly there was a loud bang on her door that woke her up. Instinctively, Lexi just pulled the covers up over her head like she did when she was a little kid and was scared. As she lay there, she held her breath, hoping the sound she just heard was in her dream, and not in real life. But then, she heard her little brother screaming in the hallway. At that point, Lexi threw off the covers and ran out of her room. And what she found at the end of the hallway would not only turn her life upside down, but it would also leave one of the wealthiest communities in Southern California in complete shock.

At around 9 a.m. on March 6, 1963, a woman living in a nice neighborhood in Minnesota heard her doorbell ring. So, she got up from her seat at the kitchen and began walking toward the door. But as she got closer to the door, the doorbell rang again. Ruth was annoyed – thinking it was probably some salesman being really pushy – but when she opened the door, she could tell this was no salesman, this was an emergency. Minutes later, police were swarming the neighborhood, guns drawn.

One night, four young brothers were sleeping in their bedroom in their little house in Tennessee, when they started to hear what sounded like a rat gnawing on one of their bedposts. So, the two oldest brothers climbed out of their bed to go find this rat, but the second their feet touched the wooden floor, the gnawing sound stopped. The boys checked the room, they checked the bedposts, there was no sign of any rat. And so eventually, the two oldest brothers just kind of shrugged it off and got back in bed. But when they closed their eyes again, the gnawing sound filled the room again. Except this time, it was louder and more frantic. Little did they know, these sounds were just the beginning of a multi-yearlong nightmare that they and the rest of their family would have to endure. Their terrifying story is known as “The Bell Witch Haunting,” and it is considered to be one of the most frightening documented hauntings of all time. And today, I’m going to share their story with you.

Late one night in the summer of 1993, an 11-year-old boy climbed into his bedroom through an open outdoor window at his house in Port Hueneme, California. And when he got into his room, he was startled to see his 4-year-old little brother just standing there, motionless. Then, before the 11 year old could even ask what was going on, the 4-year-old just raised his arm and pointed to the bedroom door that led out to the hallway, and he said, “Mommy has a band-aid on her face.” A day later, police would discover the meaning of the little boy’s bizarre statement, and they would step into a crime scene that felt like it was straight out of a horror movie.

Just after 1:30 AM on May 12th, 1994, a young girl ran from her home in rural Maine out into the rainy night. Barefoot and terrified, the girl went door-to-door screaming for help, but no one heard her. Finally, after running nearly 2 miles, she arrived in her little downtown and flagged down a restaurant owner. The owner would help her call 911, and within minutes the police would arrive at the young girls home. And what they would discover was one of the most horrific crimes ever committed in that small town, not only because of its sheer brutality, but also because of who committed it and why. We tried to make this story make sense, but sometimes the truth is just stranger than fiction.

At around 2 a.m. on May 12th, 2007, a 20-year-old woman named Maggie woke up totally confused in her bedroom. As she sat there looking around her dark room trying to get her bearings, she suddenly became aware of high pitched screaming coming from the room next door – her brother's room. Then she heard loud crashing and banging sounds, like the sound of people wrestling each other. Maggie was terrified, but she climbed out of her bed and walked over to her closed door. And then after taking a deep breath, she opened it up and stepped into the hallway. Moments later, local police would arrive at Maggie's house, and at first when they searched the home, it was still and quiet. But when they went upstairs, they discovered something so horrible, that trying to use words to describe it doesn't really do it justice. And so, fair warning, this case is not for the faint of heart.

On April 18th, 1992, a person in California turned their shower on and waited until the steam was rising up out of the stall before they stepped inside. Once under the water, this person grabbed a can of shaving cream and applied it to their entire body, and slowly, they began shaving off every hair on their body, except for the hair on their head. After they were done, they hopped out of the shower, toweled off, got dressed, and then began the next phase of their prep – packing their backpack with things like latex gloves and plastic sheets. After they were done, they climbed into bed and set their alarm for very early the next morning. They were nervous about how the next day was going to go, but they were confident they were ready. 24 hours later, what this hairless person did was all over the news...

At 4am on a winter day in 1993, a 50-year-old man named Joe walked down a dark hallway inside of his farmhouse in Kentucky. As he moved, he did his best to be as quiet as possible, so as not to wake up his wife or son who were sleeping nearby. But when Joe got about halfway down the hall, he happened to look into the family room, and he thought he saw something moving inside. He strained his eyes to see who it was, thinking maybe it was his wife or son, but he just couldn't tell. But as Joe stared into the darkness, he heard the sound of floorboards creaking inside the family room. And then before Joe could do anything, the thing he had seen moving was now rushing straight towards him. Hours later, Kentucky State Police would arrive at Joe's house, and what they would discover there was a monstrous crime that literally had never been committed before in this part of Kentucky.

Just before 3:00 AM on September 23, 2003, a police officer in a little town in Alaska was driving down an old abandoned mining road when he happened to look over to the side of the road, and he saw something shiny inside of a big gravel pit. The officer pulled over and walked over to the pit and looked down inside of it. And there at the bottom was something that he and the rest of his colleagues had been looking for for weeks. But as soon as he began scrambling down into the pit to take a closer look at this thing he found, a gun shot rang out. Then another, and another. And before long, the police officer was running for his life, screaming into his radio for backup.

In 2010, a very successful Nashville, Tennessee music producer turned her car into her driveway and pulled into her garage. After turning her car off, she was about to click her garage door remote again – to shut the garage door – when she turned and looked out her car’s back window, and she saw something very strange sitting there on her driveway. Seconds later, Veronica would be scrambling to get out of her car, and inside of her house – as fast as she possibly could. Initially, this story will seem fairly cookie cutter for a true crime story, however, it is not. There is a very unique plot twist at the end, so stick around to make sure you hear it.

One September night in 2006, a man left his office in upstate New York and walked across the nearly vacant parking lot to his truck. When he climbed inside the driver’s seat, he instantly noticed that the back left of his vehicle seemed to be sagging slightly. But before he could figure out why that was, he thought he saw something moving in his peripheral vision off to his left. Reflexively, he turned and looked out his window into the dark night, and there, only a few feet away from him was a shadowy figure looking right at him. Then, whoever it was began to raise their hands...

On the night of November 8th 2010, a 24-year-old woman named Jennifer walked downstairs into the living room of her parents' house to say goodnight to her mother. But before she walked over to the couch where her mother was to give her a hug, Jennifer noticed something moving outside on the dark street. Jennifer stopped where she was and looked out the window, but she couldn't see anything unusual. So she walked over to the front door and looked out the little window on it, and after staring out into the street for a few moments, she decided she must not have seen anything at all. So she walked back over to her mother, who had noticed her looking outside and had a look of concern on her face, and Jennifer just said, "Oh, I thought I saw something moving out there, but it was nothing." Then the 2 women said goodnight, and Jennifer headed up stairs and went to sleep. It would turn out, there actually was something moving around outside the house. And about 30 minutes after Jennifer had gone back upstairs, the thing she saw made its way across the street, up their stairs, and into their house... right up to Jennifer's room.

Jealousy, revenge, romantic triangles, robberies, sexual assault, and disputes during drug transactions are the most common motives and circumstances surrounding nearly all homicides. But the homicide that takes place in today's episode will not fall into any of those categories. Instead, it will fall into a category that most people don't realize actually exists. Needless to say, be careful of who you spend your time around, because not everyone is who they appear to be.

Early in the morning of October 3rd, 1994, a woman, living in Eugene, Oregon, woke up in her first floor bedroom to the sound of screaming coming from somewhere on the other side of her house. The screaming was coming from an actual person, who sounded like they might be in her garage. So she ran down the hall, across the living room and over to the door that led into the garage, and she flung it open. Seconds later, this woman would be living a nightmare.

In late December of 2003, a 32-year-old man named Russel drove along scenic back roads on an island off the coast of Washington State, until he arrived at his destination, a house tucked way back in the woods. After driving down the property’s long driveway, Russel pulled into a parking spot and came to a stop. After turning off his car’s engine, Russel went to unbuckle himself, when he stopped. Because right in front of him, in the tree line, he saw a figure moving in the shadows. As Russel leaned forward and strained his eyes to see who it was, the figure suddenly emerged and began walking quickly toward Russel's car. At first Russel thought he knew who this person was, but as they got closer, he knew that he didn't. But before Russel could do anything about the situation he was in, the stranger from the forest had arrived right outside of Russel’s car door and had begun staring down at Russel through the glass. As they did this, Russel turned to look at them… and what he saw was so shocking he just froze in terror.

On the morning of July 18, 2014, in a wealthy neighborhood in Florida, a married couple in their 70's were sitting on their couch, trying to figure out how to use their brand new iPad. As they did this, suddenly, coming from the property next door, they heard a loud popping sound. The man got up off the couch and walked over to the window to see what was going on, and he saw a car he didn't recognize peeling out of his neighbor’s driveway and speeding off down the street. Not sure what to make of this car or the loud sound, the man walked outside and headed over to his neighbor’s house just to make sure they were okay, and when he got to his neighbor’s driveway, he saw their garage door was open and their car was parked inside and was still on. At first, this made the man think that everything was fine, that clearly the neighbor was in their car sitting in their garage, and maybe that loud noise was just the sound of that other car backfiring. But when the man walked forward a few steps and got a look inside the running car, he knew immediately that everything was NOT fine. Moments later, the man stumbled back inside his own house where he frantically grabbed for his phone to call 911.

In May of 2009, someone in Guatemala uploaded an 18 minute long video to YouTube titled, “YouTube Murder." When the president of Guatemala reluctantly authorized an investigation into what the video actually meant, no one was ready for the insane truth it would reveal. On the morning of Sunday, November 17th, 1991, two brothers were driving in their pickup truck down a road in the small town of Conway, South Carolina. The older brother drove, and the younger brother scanned the surrounding woods, looking for the perfect spot to go deer hunting. But as they rolled along, suddenly, the younger brother began shouting that he saw something, so the older brother quickly pulled the truck over to the side of the road and parked. The brothers got out of the truck, but the younger brother didn’t walk towards the woods. He walked towards a huge pool of dried blood in the middle of the road. There was so much blood that the brothers thought a wild animal must have attacked a deer, and they worried that wild animal might still be close by. But then, the brothers saw a trail of blood leading from that spot in the road to a nearby ditch. So they followed the trail, reached the ditch, and stared down into it. Seconds later, the brothers were running for their truck so they could go alert the police.

In 2016, a woman had just pulled into her driveway in her quiet neighborhood in Missouri, when suddenly her passenger door flung open and in jumped a man she didn't recognize who was wielding a knife. The woman froze in terror hoping this was just a robbery, but when the man spoke, she knew this situation was much, much worse. Ten minutes later, the police arrived at the woman’s house, and what they saw in the hallway of the first floor shocked them. However, the real shocker came a week later when they realized who this man was, and why he had gone to that woman’s house in the first place. This story starts a bit slow, but then it spirals into madness very rapidly. And that is why this story has become one of the most infamous true crime cases in modern history.

On a cold and snowy day in January of 1994, a land surveyor for the North Carolina Department of Transportation parked his car at the edge of Highway 421 in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. After walking just a few yards away from the side of the road, he was already swallowed up in the deep woods that stretched for miles into Watauga County. Given the cold air and snow underfoot, the surveyor was paying close attention to where he was walking, and hoping that the job would not take long and he'd be back inside his warm vehicle before his toes actually froze. That was, until the man glanced ahead at the fallen tree ahead of him, and before he saw something he just couldn't make sense of peeking out of the snow in the shadow of the upended roots. Squinting, the man took a few steps closer just to make sure his eyes weren't playing tricks on him. A moment later, he dropped the hard, plastic case that contained his surveying equipment and nearly fell backward as he scrambled to get away from the mound of snow in front of him. Then looking desperately through the thick trees for the other members of the survey team, the calm around him was shattered as he started yelling for help.

And in this stream, the hikers saw something that just didn’t look right. And so, the hikers left the trail and made their way down to the stream, and when they actually saw the thing that stood out to this hiker that was in the stream, they just stopped and stared at it. It was a freezing cold morning in mid-January 2004 when a repair crew for the local electric and gas company in Princeton, NJ decided to take a break and go get some hot breakfast. The two men had been out all night fixing power poles and lines that had come down in a recent snowstorm. On their way to the diner, they saw a dark green SUV – engine running – sitting with its front wheel submerged in six inches of water in a creek that ran alongside the road. Thinking the car had been parked there by a local hunter, they didn’t think anything of it until their return trip an hour later. Seeing that the car was still there and the engine still running, they decided to stop their lift truck and go make sure that what they saw wasn’t a car accident. A few minutes later, after peering inside the drivers' window, both men stumbled backwards in horror. They knew right away that this was no hunter, and they also knew it had to be much MUCH worse than a car accident.

On March 22nd, 1994, four people were sitting in a circle inside of a dark hotel room. In front of them was a homemade ouija board, which is something people use to try to communicate with the dead. It's basically a rectangular board or paper with letters and numbers on it, as well as the words “yes” and “no” on it. The four people in the hotel room reached out one finger each and placed that finger on a glass cup that was flipped upside down resting in the middle of the board. After looking around at each other nervously, one of the four people began to speak out loud. They asked the room if there were any spirits with them right now, and nothing happened. The four people started to laugh at themselves for trying this and were about to remove their fingers and go to bed, when suddenly the glass cup began to move. As the four looked at each other incredulously trying to see if someone was moving it on purpose, the glass cup slid all the way to the corner of the board and came to a stop over the word “yes.” This ouija board session, which would continue for several more minutes and would terrify the four people in this room, would not only become one of the most famous ouija board sessions of all time, but also, it would have a dramatic impact on a major criminal case.

In January of 1994, two teenagers were sitting in a bedroom in Texas studying for their one of their classes. At some point, one of the teens picked up a copy of Shakespeare's play called "Hamlet," and began reading lines out loud. And at some point, the teen who was reading read aloud a particularly famous section of the play that deals with death. And at this point, the teen who was listening started rocking back and forth before finally starting to sob. The teen who was reading stopped and asked what was going on. And in between sobs, the teen who was now very emotional said that the play had reminded them of a horrible thing that they knew about, but had not told anyone about. and now, after hearing those lines from "Hamlet," the teen said they just had to get this secret off their chest. And so, they would. Months later, the secret that was uttered inside that bedroom between two teenagers would make front page news across the country.

On the night of June 17th, 1977, Chuck Morgan, the father of four young girls, sped down a dark road outside of Tucson, Arizona, and as he drove, he constantly checked his rearview mirror to make sure no one was following him. Chuck was wearing a bulletproof vest, on his hip was a .357 Magnum revolver, and in his pocket was one of his own teeth, wrapped up in tissue paper. And by the end of that night, Chuck would drive his car way out into the desert, and become part of a mystery that has baffled investigators for almost 50 years.

In the early 1990s, a teenager snuck into the barn right outside of his family's property and climbed up into the rafters. Once he was safely tucked away in his secret spot where no one could see him from the floor below, he pulled some rolling papers out of his pocket, along with a bag of marijuana, and rolled a joint. A few minutes later, and he was enjoying a nice high and staring out the nearby window at the moon up above. But as he smoked, he suddenly heard the barn doors opening down below. The teen froze and held the smoke in his lungs, hoping it wasn't his family out looking for him. But when the teen looked down, he could tell right away this was not his family. This was something else, this was something bad. And moments later, it would get much, much worse.

On the night of January 16th, 1984, 9-year-old Annie Swartz woke up suddenly to the sound of voices coming from somewhere outside of her door. When she got out of bed and walked into the hallway, she realized those voices were coming from downstairs, and they weren't people talking, they were people screaming at each other. However, just as quickly as the yelling started, it stopped, and the house went quiet. Annie was still curious what was going on, so she tiptoed her way down the stairs, but when she got to the bottom, she didn't see anyone, and the house was still quiet. Then from somewhere outside the house, she heard a sound. When she turned around to see what it was, what she saw scared her so badly that she instantly sprinted back up stairs, leapt into her bed, and pulled the covers up over her head. Annie would eventually fall asleep after convincing herself that what she had seen was just a bad dream. But as she would learn the next morning, that was no dream, and her real life nightmare was only just beginning.

Colon, Nebraska is one of the smallest and safest towns in America. So, back in June of 2003, when a few Colon residents received a call asking them to check on one of their neighbors, they weren't worried, but they still hurried over to make sure their neighbor was okay. After finding the neighbor's house empty, they wondered if maybe she was in her garage, which was located across the street. But when they entered her garage and flipped on the overhead light, what they discovered was so horrible that many of the town's 128 residents would never feel safe again.

In the fall of 1995, firefighters in Pleasant Garden, North Carolina responded to a call about a fire in a suburban neighborhood. When they got there, they managed to mostly put out the intense flames. At which point, they formed a line in the first-floor hallway and began moving down; looking for anyone trapped inside any of the adjacent rooms. But before they reached the end of the hallway, the floor suddenly gave out from underneath them, sending the lead firefighter down into a hidden crawlspace four feet below. The man was unhurt from the fall, but when he tried to stand up to climb out again, he noticed that there was something horrifying in that crawl space with him. The discovery in the crawl space would send shockwaves through a town that, until that moment, had been best known for its churches and championship little league baseball teams.

One evening in February of 1992, a newly married man who lived in a quiet, peaceful neighborhood in Minnesota returned home from work. When he walked inside, he saw his young son was working on some homework at the table, and his 8-month-old baby daughter was crying in her playpen, but the man's wife was nowhere to be found. He asked his son if he had seen his mother, and the boy said "no." So, the husband began walking around the house looking for his wife and calling out to her. But he couldn't find her, and she never called back. Eventually, during his search, the man reached the master bedroom. And when he opened the door and saw what was inside, he fell to his knees in horror. Moments later, the police were screaming to his residence, sirens blaring.

In early 1982, the biggest news by far in Minocqua, Wisconsin was a series of bank robberies that had all 3,300 residents looking over their shoulders and clutching their wallets any time they stepped foot into one of their local banks. But when Minocqua Police got a frantic 911 call from Park City Credit Union on the evening of April 28, what they would find inside was far worse than a robbery. Even though police would quickly put together a picture of what transpired inside of that bank, it would take another 34 years for law enforcement to finally get to the bottom of one of the most infamous crimes in Wisconsin history.

In 1988, a waitress who was living in central Florida had just begun her shift at a local diner when she’s standing in the middle of the restaurant, and her heart just starts racing like mad. Now she had not been running around or doing any heavy lifting, so it didn’t make any sense. So, kind of startled by what was happening, she just turned around and went straight into the bathroom and sat down in a stall, waiting for this sensation to pass. But as she sat there, her heart just continued to beat like mad, and then she began to feel tingling in her feet and in her arms. And it was at that moment that she realized she was having a heart attack. Except she wasn’t. Something much, much worse was happening to her.

One night in the winter of 1958, a pregnant young woman was getting ready for bed, when she heard a sudden, loud knock at her front door. She walked out of the bathroom and looked across the room to the glass sliding door that led to the front of her property, and she was immediately disappointed at who she saw standing there. But regardless, she wrapped her robe tightly around her and walked over to see what they wanted. Minutes later, one of the worst crimes in California history would be committed. And at the end of the trial, more history would be made when the judge in this case handed down a sentence that was so harsh, it has yet to be repeated in the state of California.

Late one night in February of 1986, a man returned to his home in Los Angeles, California after work. As he pulled into the driveway, he immediately noticed that his garage door was open and his wife's car was gone. He glanced at his watch and saw it was much too late for his wife to still be at work, so he wondered where she might have gone. But before he could even think about that, he noticed something else unusual about his home. There were little bits of broken glass spread out across the driveway. Now, starting to panic, the man threw his car in park and charged inside the house. And what he would see inside was so traumatic that he covered it with a towel while he waited for police to arrive.

Late one night in 2004, a young woman was asleep in her downstairs bedroom when she suddenly was awoken by a bright light shining in through her bedroom window. The motion sensor light outside on the garage had been tripped. The young woman, who was sitting on her bed by this point, squinted and tried to look outside to see what had caused this, but she couldn't see anything. And so she just assumed it had to have been a neighborhood cat or something that had tripped the sensor. So she lay back down and was nearly back to sleep when something else caused her to suddenly sit up wide awake in her bed. But this time, it was not a bright light, it was a sound. Footsteps to be exact, and these footsteps were not outside. They were inside her house, right outside of her bedroom door. Seconds later, this woman would live a nightmare.

In 2015, Clyde, Ohio was one of the safest places to live in the entire United States. Basically, violent crime never happened there. So, on April 10th of that year; when a resident was reported missing in the morning, and then their car was spotted just a few hours later in an apartment parking lot... before the police even drove out to the vehicle, they already knew that they would find this missing person either sleeping in their car or maybe visiting one of their friends in the nearby apartments. However, they would be very wrong. And to this day, the contents of that missing person's car still haunt Clyde, Ohio.

In 1979, at a hospital in Alabama, a neurologist hustled down the hallway and turned left into a particular room. Inside was a female patient, she was lying on her back on a bed, with her legs propped up on pillows. Before she could ask the doctor anything, he just said, "Show me your hands." Puzzled, the woman did as she was told. The neurologist lifted them both up to his eyes so he could really examine them closely. And then he saw it. Instantly, he dropped her hands and rushed out of the room.

In early spring of 2010, a 9-year-old boy living in Canada walked out of his school expecting to see someone from his family waiting outside in a car to drive him home. However, there was no one there. After waiting for several more minutes, and still no one showing up, the boy decided his family must have just forgotten about him, and so he decided he would just walk home. A little while later, this boy arrived home and saw cars in the driveway, which to him seemed to confirm that, yes, his family had just forgotten about him. And so he hustled up the steps thinking as soon as he got inside when his family saw him, he would get a hearty apology. But when the boy actually stepped inside of his house and saw his family, they didn't even look at him. They didn't talk to him, they didn't speak to him, they didn't interact with him at all. And at first, the boy was just confused – staring – but then he realized what was going on. Horrified, he turned and ran.

My wife is a total skeptic. She does not believe in the paranormal whatsoever, and never has. But when I told her just a portion of today’s story, specifically the part about the passenger in first class – you’ll know when you get to that scene – she told me she was so intrigued by it. And I think the reason for that is: in this story, as you’ll see, there were so many witnesses. Hundreds of witnesses. And so how could they all be making this up?

One afternoon in the summer of 2001, a man pulled up to a pump at a gas station and began fueling his car. Once his car was full, the man put the nozzle back into its holster, he hopped back inside of his car, and he was about to fire up the engine again when he stopped. Because something had caught his attention. There was something or someone moving around outside of his car to the left. But when this man turned to look out the window to see whatever it was, the world suddenly went black, and the air outside was filled with the sound of people screaming.

One night in 2003, a man named Chris, who was living in Nashua, New Hampshire, drove from his house over to his girlfriend's house, which was only about 15 minutes away. On the drive over, he tried calling his girlfriend three different times, but she hadn't answered any of the calls, which was odd. When he pulled into her driveway, he saw her two dogs were outside in the yard, which meant his girlfriend had to be home. However, as he walked up the driveway toward the front steps of the house, he noticed the two dogs were acting very strange. They were walking in circles and whining with their tails tucked tightly between their back legs. Chris was about to turn and go check on the dogs when he looked up and saw the front door to the house was slightly ajar, and the lights inside were all off. Suddenly feeling alarmed, Chris ran up the steps and entered his girlfriend's house, and what he would see inside would turn out to be one of the worst things Nashua, New Hampshire Police had ever seen.

Late at night in the fall of 1990, a woman stopped her car in front of her mailbox to check her mail. After grabbing the stack of letters, immediately she noticed one envelope in particular looked odd. Unlike the other letters in her hand, this one had no postage, no writing on it, and it was unsealed. Curious, she opened it up. Within seconds, this woman would be literally screaming at the top of her lungs and driving full speed down the road away from her house as fast as she possibly could.

On a cold morning in the winter of 1984, the manager of a popular fast food joint in eastern Pennsylvania, slowly made his way up to the front door of the restaurant to unlock it. But when he grabbed the handle of the door, he found it was already unlocked. The manager was instantly worried, but he told himself that it was probably just one of the workers from the night before. They must have just forgot to lock up. So the man stepped through the door and headed past the cash registers towards the back office. But before he got to the back office, he stopped... because there was something blocking his way. Something absolutely horrible...

On a warm day in July 1989, 32 year old actress Sherry Davis stopped by her grandmother’s house in Los Angeles, California and she made a horrible discovery. But it would take police more than 10 years, and a whole string of seemingly unrelated crimes, before police finally solved the mystery surrounding what Sherry actually saw. And worst of all, it would turn out the answer had been hiding in plain sight the whole time.

In 1953, a man had just moved into a new apartment in London, and as soon as he went inside he decided he wanted to renovate. So he started by pulling down all the wallpaper in the kitchen. And as he's doing it he makes his way into the kitchen pantry and he pulls off one particular strip of wallpaper and he sees behind the wallpaper towards the bottom of the wall is a door, there's a secret door behind the wallpaper. So he gets down and he rips off more of the wallpaper, and then he grabs the little handle and pulls the door open. What he sees inside of this little room was not only horrifying and would scar him for life, but, the contents of this secret room would change the legal system in the United Kingdom forever.

At 4 a.m. on August 28th, 2015, a phone rang inside the home of a man who lived in a little town in rural India. It was the police calling, and they needed this man to get up immediately and lead them to a very particular spot in a nearby forest. The man didnt need to ask any questions, he knew exactly what this was about. Two hours later he was walking down a sloped muddy path in those woods with a horde of police behind him. When he reached the bottom of this path, he stopped, looked around for a moment, and then when he saw the mango tree, he knew he was in the right spot. He raised his hand and pointed, “there he said, dig there.”

In 1992, in a small town in Michigan, a woman decided to go for a walk in the woods with her five dogs. So she and her animals left the house she was staying in and marched across the backyard into the nearby forest, and they began walking. A few hours later, one of those five dogs suddenly came bounding out of the forest back towards the house, all by itself. When the woman's family noticed the animal, they knew something was wrong, so they rushed into the woods to see what was going on. What they would find out there was horrific, and it would become one of the most sensational crime stories to ever come out of Michigan’s remote and mysterious Upper Peninsula.

In 1935, guests at an aquarium in Sydney, Australia, were watching a huge tiger shark swim around a tank when suddenly the shark started acting strange. It began violently shaking and swimming around as fast as it could, periodically bumping hard into the walls. And then, finally it just stopped and slowly sank to the bottom of the pool. What the shark did next horrified the onlookers and sent many of them running from the building to call the police. But, when police arrived, they were less interested in the shark, and more interested in what was now floating on top of the water in the shark tank….

One night in the spring of 1984, a woman living in Florida, was suddenly startled awake by a blood curdling scream. She sat there wondering what to do, but after hearing silence outside, she told herself it was probably nothing, and she went back to sleep. However, this woman would later find out that more than a dozen of her neighbors had also heard that terrible piercing scream, but, just like her, they all had decided to do nothing. This decision would end up haunting the citizens of Gulfport Florida for years to come, because that scream was that last desperate cry for help from someone who was about to be murdered.

Late at night on August 15, 2019, two police officers in England were driving in an unmarked police car when all of the sudden right in front of them another car appeared. Both cars came to a screeching stop, and then one occupant from this other car got out of their vehicle, and one of the officers got out of their vehicle. What happened next was so horrific, that a special law was passed to make sure it never happened again.

In the early morning hours of Saturday October 30th 2004, a man walked out of his suburban Virginia home and started walking down his driveway to get the newspaper. As he walked, he enjoyed the cool crisp air against his skin. This was one of the man's favorite times of the day, when just for a few minutes, it felt like he was the only person in the world who was outside; It was like everyone else was still sleeping. But that morning, he was wrong. He wasn't alone. Someone was hiding nearby, watching him, and waiting for the perfect moment to pounce.

In 1982, a young woman walked up a flight of stairs to her friend’s apartment, and knocked on the door. As she did, she noticed the little window on the door was broken. Worried something was wrong with her friend, the woman knocked again, this time a little louder, while also peering through the broken window to see if she could see anything. There was nothing really to see, but she could hear music playing inside. So after another minute went by and still her friend had not come to the door, the woman tried the door handle and found it was open. With her heart racing, the woman opened her friend’s door and stepped inside. A few seconds later, she would see something so horrible it would send her running back outside to safety.

This story is about a baffling disappearance that happened in 2020 in a forest in California. The most unique aspect of this case is not the disappearance itself, but rather the incredibly spooky development that happened in 2021. A development that the Madera County sheriff's office, who is in charge of investigating this disappearance, is still trying to wrap their heads around.

In 2008, a teenager was hiking through a forest in California when he decided to stop and set up camp for the night. He walked several hundred feet off the trail into the woods where he found a small clearing in the trees, and set up camp there. A few hours later, the teenager woke up suddenly and thought he heard something moving outside. It was the middle of the night, so it was pitch black outside, and he had no windows on his tent anyways, so he just laid still for a second, and listened. A few moments later he heard the unmistakable sound of footsteps slowly moving toward him.

In February of 1985, a couple (a man and a woman) were sitting inside of a car chatting about their relationship, when the woman finally just turned to the man and said, “OK, you have to tell me, it’s now or never.” The man looked at her, and could see she was serious, and so after a long pause, the man sighed and then leaned across the center console of the car, and whispered something into her ear. Little did he know, she was not the only person who could hear him.

Late one night in November of 1975 a man came home from work and parked his car at the end of his driveway, which looped around the back of his house. After sitting in his seat for a minute, he turned his car off, and then stepped outside into the cold night air. From there, he walked toward the side of his house where there was a path that led around to his front door, but before he could reach his front door, he heard a voice call out to him from somewhere off to his right. The man stopped and stared into the darkness, wondering if he really had just heard a voice at all, but then as he stared, the voice called his name again. Confused, the man walked to the fence at the edge of his property, and looked over it to see who was there. Little did this man know, he had just walked into a trap.

In March of 1990, a detective in Florida, who was investigating a missing person case, decided to search for them in a forested area near a busy highway. The area had been searched before, but this detective just had a hunch that something could still be in there. And so he stepped into the thick rows of trees and began walking deeper and deeper into the forest. Eventually he reached a point where it was so thick in front of him, he didn’t know if he could physically get through. But he decided he would just keep on going a little bit further. And after only a few minutes, he reached a clearing, and in the middle of it was something huge.

In late December of 2003, a 32 year old man named Russel drove along scenic back roads on an island off the coast of Washington State, until he arrived at his destination, a house tucked way back in the woods.

Charities that support 9/11 victims, their families, and first responders (I have donated to all of them):
1. The FDNY Foundation -- Though the FDNY Foundation predated 9/11 — it was established in 1981 — it serves the city's firefighters, who were crucial in responding to the attacks. The FDNY Foundation buys them high-tech equipment, funds training efforts, and helps with fire and life safety education initiatives.

2. Tuesday's Children -- Formed as a result of 9/11, Tuesday's Children aims to make sure "families who have suffered losses due to the events of 9/11, post-9/11 military service or other acts of mass violence and terrorism always have a comforting place to turn to," according to its website. Programs include grief and career counseling as well as youth mentorship.

3. Families of Freedom Fund -- Since Scholarship America created it in 2001, this fund has given nearly $180 million to over 3,700 students whose parents and/or spouses died or were permanently injured in 9/11. Beneficiaries of people who were on the airplanes, in the World Trade Center, in the Pentagon and involved in rescue efforts during and after the attacks are all eligible.

In the fall of 1994, a 52 year old woman pulled into the driveway of her home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and then turned her car off.

In 2016 a woman had just pulled into her driveway in her quiet neighborhood in Missouri, when suddenly her passenger door flung open and in jumped a man she didn't recognize who was wielding a knife. The woman froze in terror hoping this was just a robbery, but when the man spoke, she knew this situation was much much worse. Ten minutes later the police arrived at the woman’s house, and what they saw in the hallway of the first floor shocked them. However, the real shocker came a week later when they realized who this man was, and why he had gone to that woman’s house in the first place. This story starts a bit slow, but then it spirals into madness very rapidly. And that is why this story has become one of the most infamous true crime cases in modern history.

In 2004, a woman living in Nashville, Tennessee, was sitting up in her bed one night trying to get some homework done for a Bible study class. As she sat there, she started to feel tired and so she decided to call it a night. She bookmarked the page she was on, and leaned over to put her Bible on the bed side table, when she suddenly froze. The house was supposed to be empty, her family was out for the night... but now, standing at the foot of her bed was a person, just staring up at her... and this person was dead.

In the late 1800s, a very strange hotel was constructed in Chicago, Illinois. From the outside, it looked perfectly normal, but the inside of the hotel was anything but. Hallways were a maze of twists and turns, and there were trap doors, sliding walls and secret stairwells everywhere. But the shock factor of this hotel was part of its allure. Walking around and getting lost could actually be kind of thrilling. But, what guests didn't know was that every time they got lost in that hotel, they might never find their way out again...

In 2010, a very successful Nashville, Tennessee music producer turned her car into her driveway, and pulled into her garage. After turning her car off, she was about to click her garage door remote again, to shut the garage door, when she turned and looked out her car’s back window and she saw something very strange sitting there on her driveway. Seconds later, Veronica would be scrambling to get out of her car, and inside of her house, as fast as she possibly could... Initially, this story will seem fairly cookie cutter for a true crime story, however, it is not. There is a very unique plot twist at the end…so stick around to make sure you hear it.

In mid-July 1977, a 38 year old woman was sitting in her living room talking to her husband, when suddenly, mid-sentence, she stood up, and said very robotically, that she was going to go lie down for a while. Then she turned and walked away into a nearby bedroom. Sensing something was off with his wife, the husband followed her… What he would see, and hear, in that bedroom over the next 30 minutes, would not only scar him for life, but would also become some of the most infamous evidence ever used by police in a real murder investigation.

At 10:30pm on June 2, 2000, 15 year old Heather Robinson heard her family’s land line telephone ring, and so she picked it up. But before she could even say, “hello,” she heard her father already saying, "hello" to whoever had just called them; He had picked up the other land line telephone upstairs in his bedroom. Heather was about to hang up, but she got curious when she heard the tense, low tone of the person her father was speaking to. So, she decided to just mute her handset and secretly listen in to her dad’s conversation. Around 2am on April 6th 2018, a mysterious person walked down a snowy suburban street in Wadsworth, Ohio. At some point, this person came to a stop in front of a modest two story home and then looked around to make sure no one was watching them. Feeling satisfied no one was, this mystery person turned away from the road and walked down the driveway toward the backyard of the property. What they did next was unspeakably cruel... and it was caught on camera.

On the morning of August 10th, 1991, in a little rural town in Arizona, two women walked across a parking lot toward a Buddhist temple. They were there to prepare a meal for the monks who lived inside. As they walked, the women noticed that none of the monks were outside meditating or gardening, which was strange. And, when they reached the front door, not only was it locked, which was strange, but also, there was also this huge puddle of water forming in front of it which they just couldn't understand. The women sensed something was off, but they shrugged and left the front door, and found an open door on the side of the building and went inside. Minutes later, those women would come running back out, hysterical, screaming for help.

Very late one night in 2004, a woman in Connecticut pulled into the driveway of a house that had just been put on the market for rent. She didn't know if the owner was home or not, but she figured even if they were, they probably wouldn't mind if she just quickly walked around the outside of their property and then left. So, after turning her car off, she hopped out of her vehicle, and began walking down the driveway toward the dark backyard.

Today’s podcast features two separate, unique, stories that are both themed around the same thing, deaths that were completely avoidable. The first story you will hear is called, “The Gap," and it is about a terrible, horrible thing that is, amazingly, NOT illegal. In May of 2009, someone in Guatemala uploaded an 18 minute long video to YouTube titled, “YouTube Murder." Within hours of it being published, the video had gone massively viral to the point where YouTube’s servers began to crash, and in Guatemala, angry crowds of people began forming up in the streets demanding justice. When the president of Guatemala reluctantly authorized an investigation into what the video actually meant, no one was ready for the insane truth it would reveal. Today's story includes graphic violence, so listener discretion is advised.

On December 11th, 2006, in a beautiful little town in Italy, two men were out for a walk when they noticed a fire in a nearby second story apartment window. On March 22nd, 2003, a highly intelligent, very successful couple decided to play a strange new game. The game was very involved, and required handcuffs and blindfolds and heavy chairs, but once they were in position, they got the hang of it quickly and thought it was actually pretty fun. But after playing for a little while, something very unexpected happened, and before either of them could comprehend it, a scream filled their apartment, then there was silence. On the morning of March 8, 1961, a 13 year old boy living near Seattle, Washington, walked up the front steps of his house, opened the front door and went inside. He called out to see if anyone was home, but it was silent. He shrugged, then dropped his books and walked straight across the dining room and down a narrow hallway. When he reached the end of that hallway, where it led into the kitchen, the boy stopped. Frozen with fear, he just stared at what was in front of him…. Located in the northwestern section of Canada lies an 11,000 square mile stretch of untouched wilderness called the "Nahanni Valley" (aka "The Headless Valley"). This area is virtually inaccessible, as there are no roads, trails or other obvious access points. It is full of large dangerous animals, steep cliffs and brutal weather conditions. And it is believed to be haunted. Today's episode is based on the first hand accounts of the people who have actually found a way inside this valley and lived to tell the tale. One morning in 1983, a truck driver was driving down a lonely Alaskan highway, when he saw a young girl come bounding out of the forest that butted up against the road. The girl ran out onto the highway, turned toward him, and began sprinting in his direction while screaming and waving her arms in the air. The driver came to a quick stop and as the girl got closer, he saw she had no shoes on and had a handcuff dangling from one of her wrists. When she reached his vehicle she threw herself inside and screamed at him to drive. The driver had no idea who she was or what was wrong, but it was obvious she was in serious trouble, so he didn't ask questions and just hit the accelerator. It would turn out this young girl had been kidnapped, and that morning she was being transported out to an isolated cabin in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness to play a "game." She had managed to escape, but before she did, her captor had told her what this game entailed, believing she would die before she could tell anyone about it. But of course, she lived, and after the truck driver brought her home, she spoke to police and told them all the horrible details of the wicked game in the woods.

On March 20, 1995, a crumpled up newspaper was spotted lying on the floor of a Tokyo, Japan train car. In Japan, the subways are always immaculately clean, so this newspaper stood out like a sore thumb. As commuters stared at the trash, wondering who would be so inconsiderate to litter, a wet spot began to form at the center of the newspaper, like it was sitting on top of a liquid that was now starting to seep through. As soon as this began to happen, everyone in the train car started to cough. The cough was mild at first, but within minutes it progressed into a violent cough making it hard for people to catch their breath. By the time the train pulled into the Government Center station, the commuters on board the train were clawing at the doors of the car to get off...

On Christmas Eve in 1992, an 18 year old woman named Danita Gullette stepped outside of her place of work into the freezing Dayton, Ohio night air and began walking toward her mother's house. After a few minutes, Danita decided to call her mother to ask her something that couldn't wait until she arrived. So Danita stopped at a payphone, slipped a few coins into the phone's coin slot, then dialed the number she knew by heart. At her mother's house the phone started to ring, but when Danita's sister picked up the receiver, the phone was silent. Around the same time, the Dayton police received a call about a disturbance at a payphone in town. This would be the start of one of the most incomprehensible crime sprees in American history.

In 2012, a young man drove his truck into an Anchorage Alaska parking lot and came to a stop next to a small, bright teal colored shack. This shack was a coffee shop, and this young man worked there as a barista. That morning he had a shift, so he hopped out of his truck, went around to the side of the structure and put his keys into the door's lock. When he turned them, he noticed there was no resistance, the door was already unlocked. Confused, he pushed the door open and saw right away the place had clearly been robbed. He called his boss, who in turn called the police, and then they asked to review the shop's security footage from the night before. And when they watched it, they saw they had a much bigger problem than just theft.

This is the story of what is, quite possibly, the strangest outcome of a failed romantic relationship ever. In 2013, two young people who met on a dating site, met for the first time in person over a cup of coffee. Immediately the pair hit it off, and within a year they were engaged to be married. In 1992, a young mother received a package in the mail that had no return address on it. When she brought it inside her house and opened it up, she found it contained a non-fiction murder mystery novel. At first, she assumed this novel must just be second hand copy and so the previous owner's notes were still inside. But when she actually read some of the highlighted sections, she immediately understood that someone was sending her a terrifying message... But this would only be the start of her nightmare.
