Abdel Moneim Fayez Saad, born 1937 in Lyd, tells when his family fled in July 11 1948:
"We left everything behind, our clothes, money, the donkeys ran away. Eventually we moved to Askar Camp on the West Bank. The first couple of years we lived in tents. We labored every day and had no time to think about the future. Then UNRWA built small refugee houses for us. 1953 I opened up a small shop in the Camp, selling fruit, vegetables and candy. That was a beginning."
