On October 22, 2024 a legacy ended when Grizzly 399 was hit by a car and killed. She was the most beloved bear in the world and the oldest known grizzly to bear cubs in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. She gained popularity when she strategically raised her cubs by the roadways and tolerated human interaction. In this episode we tell her story, the legacy and impact she left on the conservation world, and the problems that her habituation has had and will continue to cause. When two dangerous convicts escaped from a Florida prison they kidnapped a woman and fled to Mississippi. During the ensuing manhunt for the prison escapees, Florida park ranger Robert McGhee was tragically murdered while on duty. Some histories are lost with time, but remnants of their existence remain. Off an unmarked trail within the park, sits an old abandoned cabin that in its hay day was a popular place for tourists to visit. It was once filled with people from around the world, coming to see Anna Wolfrom’s famous Tea Room for themselves. Anna managed to open a hugely successful business in a time it was not common for women to do so, but she didn’t stop there. Remnants of her entrepreneurial spirit remain scattered around Estes Park and the country.

In March of 2020, days before the world began to lock down, Russell Hill and Carol Clay ventured to Alpine National Park for a camping trip. When over a week passed without a word from them, the families of the elderly pair grew worried. What investigators discovered was a burnt down campsite, but not the campers. What ensued over the next 18 months unfolded as one of Australia’s most intriguing missing persons cases - which resulted in uncovering an illicit affair, a brutal murder and raised questions of other mysterious cases of the past.

In June of 1996 two women, Julie Williams and Lollie Winans, were found brutally murdered in Shenandoah National Park. Their murderer (or murderers) were never found and the case has remained unsolved, until now.

On June 20, 2024 the FBI announced that the assailant has been identified as Walter Leo Jackson Sr. Today we sit down for the second time, with Kathryn Miles, author and investigative journalist who has dedicated years of her life researching this case and uncovering faults in the investigation. While the FBI has closed the case, she unveils in this interview that there are a lot more questions that need to be answered, including the possibility of more victims. This case might be labeled as closed, but in reality, this new information has just opened up a whole new investigation.

Sharks have swum the world’s waters for millennia – there is a reason they are referred to as living dinosaurs. Their presence globally is not new, but their comeback in certain parts of the world is not celebrated by everyone. In the midst of the worst economic disaster in US History, hope was being carried through the rural communities tucked amongst the rugged mountains of eastern Kentucky. The Pack Horse Library Project sent women on horseback through the most remote regions of the Cumberland Mountains to deliver reading materials to isolated homes and communities. The project gave hundreds of women their first taste of independence and purpose, and provided thousands of Appalachians their first glimpses into the world beyond Kentucky through the pages of books.

On July 27, 1985 a group of 5 people climbed Half Dome, one of the most prominent and known rock-faces inside the park. A summer storm formed over the summit, but despite the dangers, they continued on. By the end of the day, 2 people were dead and three were critically injured after being struck by lightning, sparking an intense nighttime helicopter rescue.

On October 2nd, 1999, 3 year-old Jaryd Atadero vanished on a group hike in the Roosevelt National Forest of Colorado, and his father Allyn has been searching for answers to who (or what) what was responsible ever since. The search for Jaryd set off one of the largest search and rescue missions in the state’s history and has remained one of Colorado’s greatest unsolved mysteries.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the nation’s best “hidden” jewels. People venture here to paddle, hike and camp along its rugged, colorful coastline. It’s the perfect destination, until it isn’t. The lakeshore has seen its fair share of recorded deaths since its NPS designation in 1966. The park can be a risky place to be with notoriously rough coastal waters when weather turns, but it wasn’t until 2006 when it saw its first fatal fall. Since then, what truly happened surrounding Juanita Richardson’s death among the cliffs of Pictured rocks has been of fierce speculation. The event tore a family apart, and this story proves the most dangerous risk of all could be sitting right next to you all along.

Today we visit the Giant Sequoias of California and tell the stories of their exploitation to gain recognition at the World's Fair in the United States. The length people went through to cut down some of the largest trees in the world to ship them across the country was extensive, but many questioned whether the trees were real. People laughed at the idea of these enormous trees and when they tried to show them off in hopes of profits, many deemed it all as an unbelievable “hoax.”

Today we trek into Muir Woods National Monument to explore the decaying community of Druid Heights, once a thriving hub for artists, philosophers and those who felt they couldn’t find acceptance in the world. We look back on what it once was and discuss the controversy surrounding its current preservation, or lack of. But we aren’t alone! We are joined by Justin Yoder, founder of LGBT Outdoors. After our tour of Druid Heights, Justin tells us more about his organization, what inspired him to create a space where the LGBTQ+ community could connect with the outdoors and one another and all of their fun events that are taking place around the country. Love and compassion should extend beyond care and concern for wild spaces - it should be granted to everyone we share it with. Happy Pride Month!

Today we had the opportunity to sit down with Jeremy Evans. He is an avid outdoorsman, family man and author. Growing up in Alberta he fell in love with the outdoors and dedicated most of his life to being in it - often times alone - deep in the backcountry. It was on one of those solo adventures in August of 2017 when he had what he describes as an “oh shit” moment when he witnessed a terrifying sight - a lone grizzly cub. Instinctually he knew mama was nearby, and he was right. Mauled Lessons Learned from A Grizzly Bear Attack details what happened next that forever changed Jeremy, but didn’t stop him.
