This week's episode marks the second half of our deep dive into the overlooked, underrated Curse of the Damned cut, "Save Me Now." You will hear all about how the song was originally recorded as part of the ill-fated Run for Your Life sessions in Armand's Satellite Studios, how the organ intro came to be, and why it was retained in the final album version.  Armand and Jarvis explain how the guitar harmonies are handled live, what the lyrical inspiration is, and why they intentionally leave this particular song open to interpretation.  Other cool nuggets of "Save Me Now' trivia covered in the episode include why Jarvis wrote the guitar solos, why the song fades out on the album, and why it's played more aggressively live.  The guys talk about its proper place in the setlist and share their feelings about the Spanish band Sweet Death's cover version. This week we bring you breaking news from the Night Demon camp.  Deluxe reissues of the band's back catalog (much of which had been out of print for some time) are available now, freshly remastered and with special bonus tracks, unique packaging and color variants.  All three of Night Demon's first three seminal releases - the self-titled EP, Curse of the Damned, and Darkness Remains - are included in the reissue campaign, and are all being reissued through the band's own Night Demon Records imprint.  (The one exception is that the reissues for Curse and Darkness are being handled in Europe by SPV/Steamhammer Records.)  You will hear why it was so important to the band to reissue their back catalog now in new and improved physical editions.  Armand explains his objectives in remastering the albums.  And Jarvis walks you through the track listings and variants for each title.  You will also hear excerpts from special bonus tracks gracing these editions.

This week, we take you back down memory lane to the early days of Night Demon, as they bubbled up from the seedy underbelly of the Los Angeles heavy metal underground. You will hear the context of Night Demon's drummer vacancy being filled by Dusty Squires in a session capacity as the band began recording what became the Curse of the Damned album. Jarvis reminisces about the difficulties of playing shows in LA and the sacrifices they made to get their music heard.  Then he describes how Night Demon managed to get on three regional shows of the Diamond Head / Raven tour in October 2013, how much landing those shows meant to the band, and how they served as the springboard to Night Demon believing in themselves that they could carry the torch.

In this week's episode, we continue chronicling Night Demon's September 2023 European headlining tour.  The narrative picks up with a late night, post-gig drive through the German countryside en route to Munich for a Monday night show at the Backstage venue.  You will hear about the band's sweltering performance in a packed house, and the pitfalls of government-imposed sound decibel limiters and woefully substandard band apartments.  From there the tour rolled on to the Escape Metal Corner in Vienna, where a tiny stage in a cramped, hot venue created logistical challenges for band and crew alike. The guys explain the importance of delivering the best show possible no matter the conditions. A freak injury bloodied a band member. Yet the tour continued to Salzburg for a killer show in a cave built into the side of a mountain as the oppressive heat wave finally abated. A rare sightseeing opportunity presented itself the following morning.

This week we resume the narrative of Night Demon's fall 2023 European tour.  After a disastrous beginning, the tour settled into a groove with a pair of stellar shows in Germany.  For the first time, the band sold out the Goldgrube venue in Kassel, where they debuted their main tour setlist, played a killer show, and enjoyed a fine Mediterranean meal afterwards.  The next day it was off to Essen to play a packed gig at the Turock, one of Night Demon's favorite venues.  They successfully tweaked the setlist a bit, laid down the law about partying responsibly, and then enjoyed a rare off-day with rest and schnitzel.

One of Night Demon's most beloved covers ever is their version of the Riot classic "Road Racin'".  In this week's episode, the guys (with an assist from Riot bassist Donnie Van Stavern) break down the history of Riot, including the various eras of the band, Riot's underrated importance to the heavy metal genre, and how the members of Night Demon became acquainted with Riot.  You will hear the circumstances under which Night Demon added "Road Racin'" to their early live sets and their decision to record it as a bonus track during the Curse of the Damned sessions. Back in 2014, Night Demon recorded a cover version of the NWOBHM classic "Axe Crazy," by the band Jaguar.  This week's episode takes a deep dive into that song.  Jaguar guitarist and founding member Garry Pepperd chronicles the formation of the band and explains how "Axe Crazy" came about and why it was released as a single rather than on a proper album.  The Night Demon band members describe how they came to be aware of Jaguar and "Axe Crazy," and talk about their reasons for recording it and how it became a staple in their live set for several years.  You will also hear from Jarvis and Garry about the brief period when Jarvis became the lead vocalist for Jaguar, and the handful of shows he performed with them.  The guys reflect on the enduring appeal of the song and the reasons why it will never truly be retired from the Night Demon set.

Faced with some down time in Northern Ireland, Night Demon tackled the challenge of recording acoustic versions of some of their material.  This episode tells that story.  The guys explain the difficulties they encountered in lining up a suitable location for recording, and how their problems were solved when they stumbled across Emerald Guitars.  They also describe the process of selecting particular songs to translate into acoustic renditions and the benefits of having a drummer who is also a skilled guitar player.  Ultimately, you will hear Night Demon's feelings on how the recording sessions went, as well as snippets of those recordings.  Release plans are undecided st this point, but stay tuned for further details.

Following the Japan tour in spring 2023, Night Demon traveled to the UK for a run of UK / Ireland shows that was planned to commence with an appearance at the Dominion Festival in Newcastle.  Unfortunately, that festival was canceled on very short notice, leaving the band in limbo for a few days.  In this week's episode, you will hear how they spent that time.  The centerpiece was an off-the-cuff covers gig at an open mike night at a blues bar in Newcastle.  The episode includes audio of this entire performance, including a Jarvis collaboration with Russ Tippins from Satan. Night Demon then traveled to their home base in Derry, Northern Ireland, for a couple days of downtime.  The guys describe their philosophies on how to spend time off on the road.  Also, Jarvis explains why in a very real way Northern Ireland is home.

As we continue wending our way through the songs on Night Demon's new Outsider album, we turn our gaze to track 5, "Rebirth."  This song was not chosen as a single, but it very easily could have been.  In this week's episode, the guys take you through the origins of "Rebirth," namely a series of scattered, unrelated riffs in different keys that Jarvis composed in Northern Ireland in early 2021. Then we fast forward to October 2021, when Night Demon faced pressure to finish writing the record.  In that moment, as time was running out, they dug deep and assembled these disparate riffs into a cohesive song much like pieces of a puzzle. Not only do they describe that creative process in detail for you, but they also take you into the jam room to hear these ideas take shape and morph into the final piece of music known as "Rebirth."

This week's episode focuses on the brand-new Night Demon single entitled "Beyond the Grave."  This is the third single from the recently released Outsider album, and it marks one of Night Demon's most ambitious, adventuresome compositions to date.  You will hear early demos of this song dating back to a March 2018 riff tape. The guys explain how Jarvis wrote the bulk of the song in the form of various bass riffs that he stitched together over time, before presenting the skeleton to Armand and Dusty to add their parts in early 2020.  They describe how the final version of the song came together naturally once the band got in the jam room to work it out.  You will also learn fascinating details about the timing of later demo recordings of this track, how they were stymied by worldwide events and a band member's health emergency, and why "Beyond the Grave" never actually made it into the 2020 standalone singles campaign as had been originally intended.

This week's episode is devoted to a deep dive into the track "Prelude," the introductory piece to the forthcoming Night Demon album Outsider. Not only does it set the tone for the album, but it also introduces the title track and lead single. The guys explain how "Prelude" began with a bass riff that Jarvis wrote back in early 2020.  They then walk you through the layer-by-layer build of the track, including utilization of a Roland Jupiter 8 synthesizer, a piano, guitar parts, and ultimately drum parts performed by all three members in unison.  You'll hear how every piece of "Prelude" came together, with an Easter egg linking this song to a very obscure sound effect in a particular horror movie soundtrack. The band teases how this intro might be performed live in the months and years to come. They also describe how they view this song as a natural progression from the intro to "Welcome to the Night" on the Darkness Remains album.

This week's episode focuses on Night Demon's return to America after a triumphant run of gigs through Canada in September 2022. You will hear in-depth commentary surrounding the band's travels to Texas and their weeknight shows in San Antonio and Austin.  As to the San Antonio show, Jarvis, Armand and Dusty describe playing in a strip mall after eating long-expired chicken soup, and talk about the challenges of playing a fan-prepared setlist, including one song they hadn't performed live in six years. This week, we continue our day-by-day, gig-by-gig recap of Night Demon's fall 2022 Year of the Demon Tour.  The story resumes in Karlsruhe, Germany, at the same venue where the band filmed their "Heavy Metal Heat" official video back in 2015. As usual, the boys provide behind-the-scenes details of the gig, plus interviews with fans and live clips from the show, as well as anecdotes about a hotel featuring taxidermy and a treehouse.  The next day in Lichtenfels, Night Demon played a small, narrow, packed and sweaty gig at an Irish pub for metal in Germany, with a most unusual setlist featuring covers you've probably never heard them play. This week marks the return of the popular tour episodes, as we join the band on the road for the Year of the Demon Tour in September and early October.  The story begins on September 2, 2022, with Night Demon en route to Mexico for their performance at the Candelabrum Metal Festival in Leon the following day.  Unfortunately, the band's travels inbound were marred by airline hassles, luggage issues, mind-numbing delays, damaged gear, and stray dogs on runways. Finally the band reached Leon and were pleased to find a professional festival setup in all respects.  You'll hear all about their gig at Candelabrum, including tempo issues, an unusual take on "Vysteria," and finally victory with a killer cover of "Wasted Years" in front of 2,500 ravenous Mexican metalheads.  The remainder of the episode is devoted to Night Demon's hang in Mexico City for a couple of days while awaiting their flight to Germany.  We bring you interview clips from those days, detailing the parties, the friends, the tacos, the stories, and the adventures, including one final airport headache involving a misplaced immigration form necessary to leave Mexico.

In the spirit of Halloween, we have a special treat for you this week. Jarvis recently appeared on the 'A Year in Horror' podcast to discuss both Night Demon and his lifelong affinity for horror movies, with particular emphasis on the film Fright Night. That interview is reproduced for you in full here. Host Paul Waller asks Jarvis a series of insightful questions about Night Demon's activities (including this very podcast). In response, Jarvis provides a wealth of information, including a few hints about the forthcoming 2023 album.  From there, the conversation pivots to horror movies. "The Howling Man" has long been recognized as an all-time fan favorite in the Night Demon catalogue.  This week we conclude our deep dive into the track by examining "The Howling Man" in the live arena. You will hear about the first times it was performed live back in 2014, and why it works so well in the live setting.  The guys explain the origins of the sample that begins the song, and then proceed to go through a detailed breakdown of the different instrumental parts.  Of particular note, Armand enumerates how and why he has adapted the guitar parts from the original recorded version, adding little nuances and ear candy that were not there before. You will discover how a live performance of "The Howling Man" began as an out-of-tune train wreck at a German festival earlier this year, only for Night Demon to emerge triumphant in the end. This week we begin our deep dive into one of the all-time classic Night Demon tracks, "The Howling Man."  The episode begins with host Nesbit describing myriad occasions in which he has been oblivious to The Twilight Zone references in popular culture.  The point, of course, is that Night Demon rooted the lyrical themes of this song firmly in an episode of The Twilight Zone.  You'll hear demo versions of the song dating back to 2011. Jarvis explains the significance of The Twilight Zone to him, and how he stumbled upon this episode as lyrical inspiration for the song. From there, the narrative shifts to a hot, sweaty gig in Milan in a proper rock venue surrounded by good friends and a cool promoter.  The hijinks resurface back at the hotel, however, with secret doors, rogue smoke alarms, and cranky proprietors, all the while with no sign of the missing gear bag.  Finally the bag is recovered at the Milan Airport, albeit minus a tuner pedal that was stolen.  The next night's gig is in a cave / wine cellar underneath a castle in Switzerland, with high-end accoutrements and noise limitations firmly in place. Did you hear the news? After a hiatus since October 2018, the legendary Frost and Fire Festival is back. This year's installment is being held in Derry, Northern Ireland on June 17-18, 2022. In honor of this special event, we look back in this episode on the history of Frost and Fire. We begin appropriately enough at the beginning, by discussing Jarvis's history of promoting live shows since his teenage years. Then we fast forward to 2015, when the original Frost and Fire Festival idea was born as a way of bringing the metal masses to Ventura, California, spurred onward by the prospect of a signing session with reclusive Ventura metal heroes Cirith Ungol. You will hear how the Frost and Fire Festival concept evolved from that, culminating in a special event in London headlined by Angel Witch in May 2018. This week, we delve into the live version of Iron Maiden's "Wasted Years" that appears on Night Demon's newly released compilation album, Year of the Demon.  The guys reflect on how they came to be familiar with Iron Maiden during their childhood years and how Maiden became an inspiration to each of them and to Night Demon as a whole. They talk about the mantra "What would Maiden do?" You will hear why Night Demon chose "Wasted Years" as a cover song, and specifically how they relate to it lyrically.  We also explore the history of "Wasted Years" in the Night Demon set, from humble beginnings at a dive bar in Miami to one of the grandest true metal stages in the world in Germany.  Night Demon also explain the omission of this recording from the Live Darkness album, and the subsequent decision to include it as the b-side to the "Vysteria" single in 2020. At the outset, the band members explain how this really isn't a pandemic song and how it's really about self-empowerment in the face of media manipulation and hysteria, all set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. You will learn the surprising origins and dictionary definition of the term "vysteria." Then we get into the musical genesis of the song, beginning with a jam tape dating back to August 2019 and carrying through multiple permutations and incarnations until March 2020. The guys explain how and why the song evolved over time. They then go into great detail about working with legendary producer Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Illinois. You will hear the original press release for the single, and learn Night Demon's trepidation about "Are You Out There" as a laidback departure from their signature sound. Then the boys go into great detail about the origins and evolutions of the song, beginning with a 2015 demo recorded on a cellphone in Geneva, Switzerland in 2015, and morphing over the course of three subsequent demos reaching early 2019.  The guys explain what changed and why over the course of these demos, and you'll hear the evolution through those incremental recordings.  We leave off with Night Demon heading to Chicago to record the song under the tutelage of legendary producer Steve Albini.

This week we examine "100 mph," which was the B-side to the "Kill the Pain" single released in May 2020.  Originally a Cirith Ungol song appearing on the 1986 album One Foot in Hell, Night Demon's rendition of "100 mph" will be included in the forthcoming Year of the Demon compilation album released on March 25, 2022.  We begin with a brief overview of the history of Cirith Ungol, and the back story of "100 mph" as told by Cirith Ungol members Robert Garven and Tim Baker.  The Night Demon guys explain their decision to cover the tune, why it means a lot to them to record a Cirith Ungol song, and how they decided on "100 mph."  You will hear about the recording process for this song under the watchful eye of Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen.  The band gets into specifics of how they Demonized "100 mph," describing what changes they made and why.  Jarvis and Cirith Ungol vocalist Tim Baker discuss how they traded vocal lines.  We look at how the lyrics resonated with Night Demon, and even get into the cover art created for the digital single in January 2022. Both Night Demon and Cirith Ungol express optimism that the two bands will join forces to perform the song live someday soon.

This week marks the final installment of our deep dive into "Kill the Pain," one of the featured cuts on the forthcoming Year of the Demon compilation CD.  The band members explain how "Kill the Pain" is a peek into the future of Night Demon, where core elements of the band's sound meet a departure into new musical and lyrical realms.  You will hear isolated tracks of each instrument and vocals, with in-depth commentary from the guys.  The band also speaks about the spectacular cover artwork courtesy of longtime Night Demon visual artist Brian Crabaugh, as well as the back cover photo captured by accomplished German photographer Sebastian Wilke. On May 1, 2020, Night Demon released their second 7" single of 2020, featuring new original track "Kill the Pain" on the A-side. That song is a prominent part of the Year of the Demon compilation album to be released in March 2022. In this episode, you'll hear the original press release for the single, learn about the vinyl variants, and discover why the physical release was so limited. Then we examine the history of the song, beginning with the original riff tape recorded in Louisville, Kentucky in 2015. The band explains how that riff resurfaced in 2018 during a stint in Hamburg, Germany, and how Night Demon began shaping it into the song it ultimately became. Multiple demos from various times are aired, with band members explaining what changes had been made and why. They discuss how the live version diverges from the recorded version. We end this episode with Night Demon making the long journey to Copenhagen, Denmark to record the track with the assistance of legendary producer Flemming Rasmussen.

The B-side of the "Empires Fall" 7" single was an obscure NWOBHM song called "Fast Bikes," originally recorded by the unheralded Le Griffe. The forthcoming Year of the Demon album marks the first time Night Demon's version of this unpolished gem will be heard by a wide audience. In this episode, we explore the unlikely manner in which Night Demon discovered the song, how it became the soundtrack to some of their early van tours, and why they decided to cover it. We run through the known history of Le Griffe, and talk with No Remorse Records about the recent reissue of that band's EPs.  The guys talk about the recording process and the choices they made in terms of Demonizing the song while maintaining the original vibe and flavor. They also reflect on the "back to the roots" quality of this track, and share a fascinating Easter Egg about their version for podcast listeners.

In part 3 of our ongoing investigation into "Empires Fall," we examine how Night Demon came to work with producer Matt Hyde on this track, including Armand's long history with him. The band describes their experience in working with an outside producer and reflects on whether Night Demon really needs an outside ear in the studio. In part 10 of our in-depth analysis of Night Demon’s early years, we explore the winds of change that confronted the band in September 2013.  A lineup shakeup results in Dusty Squires agreeing to play drums on forthcoming studio recordings, but leaves them with no drummer for imminent live commitments.  Armand fills in on drums for a gig in Pasadena.  You’ll hear from departed drummer John Crerar as he speaks at length about his feelings at the time, his reactions in hindsight, and his goodwill toward Night Demon today.  And we air an archival interview with Metal Assault from September 2013 in which Jarvis and Brent discuss touring and recording plans, plus a whole lot more.

In this week's episode, we continue our chronicle of Night Demon's formative years, focusing on the official release of the debut EP in summer 2013. You will hear excerpts from worldwide media coverage of the release, including glowing reviews and vintage interviews with Jarvis. A press release in early September announced the band's intention to go into the studio shortly to record their full-length debut album.  Night Demon was gigging heavily in southern California at the time, feeding off the youthful energy of a growing hardcore fanbase.  They performed a release show at the Bombay Bar and Grill in their hometown of Ventura on September 14, 2013, and this episode includes extensive live recordings from that night, including the live premieres of multiple new songs.  As fate would have it, that show turned out to be John Crerar's final performance behind the drum kit for Night Demon,.
