Noisextra is a weekly deep dive into the world of noise in all of its forms and features album spotlights and in depth conversations with those residing in the noise world. Hosted by Greh Holger, Tara Connelly and Mike Connelly, the podcast takes a historical look at the many tentacles of noise, industrial, and experimental sounds from their distant roots to everything in between and beyond, predominantly from the pre-millennium era.

The day before Halloween can only mean one thing—it’s time for Atrax Morgue. This year we discuss “No More.” The final proper Atrax Morgue album hit us in an unhinged way. In addition, Tara talks about the surrealist Pierre Molinier as one of the tracks on the album is dedicated to him. Welcome to the broken sound… enter the club of the dead.
For the ExtraNoisextra segment on the patreon, we discuss 3 Italian horror movies — “Blood Delirium,” “Body Puzzle,” and “Murder Obsession.” This half hour segment immediately follows the regular episode on the patreon feed.

Obviously Roger has been someone we’ve wanted to talk to since Noisextra’s inception and we’re incredibly grateful he sat down with us. Pull up and chair and enjoy this absolute supper.

Today we take another look at the “extra” of Noisextra with Ross Snyder of the Saturn’s Core movie label. The movies that Saturn’s Core release run parallel to the DIY noise underground of yore… in this case its the DIY shot-on-video homemade movie underground of the 90s. Home dubbed tapes, zines, mail order, and regional scenes all come into play with Ross’s story. It’s a great discussion on a world that may not be familiar to some listeners, but well worth visiting.

This week we go “Over the Head of Persons” with Seed Mouth. Greh recently came across a copy of the original cassette, propelling us to dive into this classic 1991 release. Seed Mouth exists in its own world and it’s never a bad time to enter the Seed atmosphere.
For the ExtraNoisextra segment on the Patreon, Mike hits record for 30 minutes for an in-the-moment monologue talking about memories from 20 years ago. Gnarly van breakdowns, touring, shows and more are all part of this extra segment.
It’s another magazine episode as we take a look at “Audio Drudge” #7. This issue was picked partly for its accessibility, but also because of the Caul tapes that Greh scored in Japan. In addition to Caul, this issue has interviews with Allegory Chapel Ltd, Contrastate, a section on VHS, and plenty of reviews. It’s always a pleasure looking to the past via printed matter.

Necro love is in the air this bloody Valentine’s Day and we felt the Necrophonie “1996-2006″ 10” on Dogma Chase was called to discuss. Video game composer and sound designer Ross Tregenza joins us to discuss the process of creating all the sounds for the new Texas Chain Saw Massacre video game and maintaining a faithful atmosphere to Tobe Hooper’s 1974 film. Tregenza’s soundtrack plays separately from the game as an excellent dark ambient album rich in tension. We discuss how he got into the industry, his work for Cyberpunk 2077, varying levels of chicken agitation and composing for games in general.
For the ExtraNOISEXTRA segment, Ross talks about his favorite video games and horror movies.

October screamed for an episode on a soundtrack and a movie, and we landed on the hate-filled nihilism of “The Last House on Dead End Street.” In the first part of the episode, we talk to Adam Higgins who released the soundtrack on LP. It is very appropriate listening and watching for the darkest month.

Jim was in town, so he came over to the Connelly household to have a talk about Gilden and the process of putting the box set together. We start off 2023 discussing some very serious noise artists with Cock E.S.P. “Greatest Dicks”” from 1996 on the one and only Pure. We get appropriately foul and dirty while discussing one of the most seminal, deep thinking and intelligent noise bands of all time. Cock E.S.P. mean it this time and they are definitely making it their business. Happy New Cock Noise Year!

Today is the Winter Solstice and the most appropriate recording we could think of was Coil “Winter Solstice” EP. The final four songs in the Solstice series, this is the perfect way to ring in the holidays, especially with the stunning beauty of the final track. It’s our first episode on Coil, and rather than going with one of their full lengths, it was nice to take our first steps in the form of this EP, as there will certainly be more Coil as the years go on. Feel the moon’s pull… Christmas is now drawing near.

Lon and Skott of legendary American industrial band Hunting Lodge join us for an in-depth discussion covering their entire output. 2022 marks the 40th anniversary of Hunting Lodge, and with multiple reissues of theirs rare release in the past handful of years, there’s no time like now to hear the history direct from the source. A collaboration that has come up on two recent Seven Inch Sundays, and one that was requested multiple times in our early podcast days, Merzbow & Christoph Heemann “Sleeper Awakes on the Edge of Abyss” is this week’s focus. An interesting and unexpected work, this album settles in quickly and brings up as many images as it does questions. It’s a great look at ’80s Merzbow through the lens of Christoph Heemann.

A pure 90s noise tape was called for, and Killer Bug “Brutal Rainbow” answered that call. On the Noise label from Taiwan, this one tears the ground asunder. Killer Bug is the first incarnation of Kazumoto Endo, and while the cut up technique is present, “Brutal Rainbow” goes heavy on the trash, the porn, and the total noise.

Crank Sturgeon proposed a discussion on contact microphones, so in this episode we go over what a contact mic is, general applications, how to record and affix the mics and amplifying slightly more traditional instruments. We also cover why the contact microphone is the perfect noise instrument, contact mics vs other microphones, in the studio and in the field, using with synthesizers and modular, troubleshooting contact mic issues, and plenty of Cranky anecdotes!

Erik Hoffman was cool enough to have us to his home to discuss two landmark Ground Fault CDs in the field recording realm: Eric La Casa “The Stones of the Threshold” and Lionel Marchetti “Portrait D’Un Glacier.” Erik relays some thoughts on the albums as well as working with each artist. We get into the importance of field recordings, where they can take you, and how they fit into the noise world.

An insightful history shadowy world of Projekt Records.

Break the metal mold with Chop Shop “Steel Plate.” A heavy release in every sense, we explore the sonic sculptures of Scott Konzelmann. Two 10″s and a booklet strapped to a sheet of metal, this is one of the great 90s noise packages. Listen and witness physical sounds through visible sources.

Coming soon on No Coast No Hope. Anthony Amelang “Traumland” C40 cassette. Synthetic transmissions of parallel landscapes amidst dream technology. One half of the Minneapolis PE unit “Controlled Opposition”, Anthony Amelang crafts personal and varied power electronics with previous releases on Phage Tapes and Chryptus Records. Still in stock is the CD full length album “Loss of Innocence” from the Milwaukee stalwart of depressive dark electronics Blessed Sacrifist. Also in stock is Controlled Opposition’s “You Don’t Want To Know” cassette, a militant explosion of outrage, activism, and conspiracy.

A new year should only begin with a classic and that’s what we had searing through the speakers with MSBR “Destructive Locomotion (Dedicated to Chizuo Matsumoto)” on Pure. Chizuo Matsumoto was known to the world as Shoko Asahara, the leader of Aum Shinrikyo. This is a noise/true crime episode, in the vein our Murder Series episodes, as we dig into this incredible album as a background to the story of Aum Shinrikyo and Tokyo sarin subway attacks.

You knew it had to happen sometime. That time is now. Greh cornered Mike and asked him all sorts of stuff. Guitar? Check. Death Metal pedal? Check. Air organ? Check. Vocals? Check. And of course we talk his latest evolution of Failing Lights, working with Tara in Yellow Gas Flames, how Clay Rendering has influenced his solo work, and what it’s like to operate the Los Angeles Serial Killer Synthesizer Club.

KK Null’s “Saishiyu Butshitsu” LP from 1985 was recommended to us and we were all blown away. Brand new to us, this album hits all the right notes. Greh introduces the Connellys to an old obscure favorite of his with Netzach “Force and Fire.” Loop based industrial from 1993, this tape hit all the right notes and got the entire crew revved up. Tara dove into researching the Crowley and Kabbalisitc references on the release and fill us in on her findings. This is an exciting early 90s industrial artifact prime for (re-)discovery.

June is calling so we thought it would be a great time to cover “Endless Summer” by Fennesz. It’s our first time highlighting a Mego album and this seminal disc is a fantastic marker of a particular branch of noise sounds. Melodic guitar swims under broken computer sounds and we are washed away in its waves. Note: apologies for some mic crackle and distortion on this episode.

We are back in Merzland with the fantastically bright “Red 2 Eyes” 10″ on V2. These thick, heavy, and cosmic sounds were recorded in February and August of 1995 and we get to hear Merzbow experimenting with his then-recently acquired EMS synth. As well as the history of this record and title, there is a fun-filled debate on what to call the colors of the cover and vinyl. This 10″ showcases how and why Merzbow hits in a way no one else quite can.

In the first of two episodes, Dominick Fernow joins us to discuss the very beginnings of Prurient and Hospital Productions. We begin the journey in ’90s Wisconsin as he navigates the worlds of death metal and techno, which eventually leads to the noise underground. While the three of us have all known Dominick for nearly two decades, we all learned plenty of new and incredible information about his most distant past. Join us for some highly enlightening noise history.

Whether under the Crawl Unit moniker or his own name, Joe Colley has created his own unique strain of noise since the late ’80s. Japanese industrial psychosis plows through the wastelands in the form of Dissecting Table’s “Between Life and Death.” We are fully on board for Ichiro Tsuji’s unique industrial art and have a blast digging into his post apocalyptic sounds. Hop into a flamethrower-equipped car and crank this dystopian masterpiece. Everyday is one more day of insanity.
Note: Due to hardware failure, we lost the Connelly’s clean audio and are working from the call audio instead so it doesn’t sound as pretty as usual.

As nearly every classic Japanese noise artist has cited Tangerine Dream as a huge influence, we thought it was time to cover them and their “Zeit” double album from 1972. One of the very first full on experimental ambient records, “Zeit” sends us all on an abstract sonic path while we dig up the roots of what makes up everyone from Aube to Merzbow to Nord and countless other noise legends. Are we in the cosmos? Underwater? The jungle? It’s possible we are in all three at the same time with Nord “Electronic Initiation.” Nord is one of the earliest Japanese noise projects, and this brain buster of a CD came almost 20 years into Nord’s existence. Midway through the episode, we got messages from Kimihide Kusafuka, aka K2, aka owner of Kinky Musik Institute, the label that put this CD out. Kusafuka gave us some behind the scenes info on “Electronic Initiation” including one bit of information that changed our whole perception of the album.

Normally a weekly Patreon-only series, Mike and Tara wanted to spend their favorite holiday with the entire Noisextra family. Sit by the Yuletide fire as they discuss their favorite Christmas themed noise, horror movies, and the spirit of Christmas.

Our second interview from the Hospital Fest weekend is with Jilla of Moonbeam Terror and Autoerotichrist. The discussion goes deep when talking about her music and art and pivots to hilarity when talking about beans and Wisconsin. Her album “Comfort Knife” was one of our favorites of the year and her set at Hospital Fest was visceral magic. Put on your chain mail and watch out for sharp corners.
We all owe thanks for these episodes to our Patreon supporters, who helped us get to NY to talk to some noise artists and cover the Hospital Productions fest. Seriously, you all rule, thank you!

It was an honor to talk with one of our favorite bands, Smell & Quim. A great history lesson, we go from off the wall Quim-ness to earnest chats about the early days, costumes throughout time and baking bread. Hear Tara predict the props used the following night. Hear Dave describe what “the English Method” is. Hear a great talk with one of the all-time legends. And remember, “life’s too short not to bake your own bread.”
Please get in touch if you’ve heard from Simon Morris since Saturday, December 7th, 2019.

Surprise! We are back a day before the Hospital Fest with a very special bonus episode. Did you know there was an unreleased PAINJERK album from the ’90s? Neither did we, but here it is! Easily the most exciting noise release of 2019, PAINJERK’s “Mission Invisible : Kill the Poor” on Hospital Productions is here to scorch the earth and begin anew. Spoiler alert: we absolutely worship this album. In addition, Kohei Gomi sent us some great information on this unreleased masterpiece that we share throughout the episode. Curl up, huddle up and get ready to be overwhelmed by pure and perfect PAINJERK sound experimentation.

As the the first year of Noisextra winds down, we thought we’d discuss some of our favorite albums and sets of the year. It’s been an excellent year for noise and it was hard to whittle our lists down, but each of us came with our personal stand outs of 2019. We cannot wait for many more years of noise listening and noise talking. Thank you all for listening, to us and to noise.
