Join musician Chris Fafalios (Punchline, Another Cheetah, Pack) as he listens to different one hit wonders with a revolving door of guests (including his bandmates and/or people from bands that he has toured with). After listening to the back catalog of the week’s artist, they decide if the artist is a one hit blunder (shouldn’t have had any success) or brought the one hit thunder (deserved to be much bigger than they were).

This week, we’re joined by Hunter DeBlanc to talk about his hometown heroes, Cowboy Mouth, and their high-energy 1997 single “Jenny Says.” Against the odds, this Louisiana band broke into the modern rock scene with a song that was as relentless and rowdy as their live shows, led by drummer and lead singer Fred LeBlanc’s electric stage presence. Though “Jenny Says” opened doors to movie soundtracks, Cowboy Mouth couldn’t find another radio hit and eventually parted ways with their major label. But in Louisiana and all throughout the country, they’re still packing shows—even county fairs, where Hunter saw their unforgettable live act. Join us as we dig into Cowboy Mouth’s legacy and debate whether they’re worth knowing beyond “Jenny Says.”

Patreon voted, and this week we’re diving into Cornershop’s 1997 single “Brimful of Asha”—a song that producer Matt, a true fan, has been waiting for us to cover. Known for blending Indian influences with indie rock, Cornershop crafted a unique song that’s a heartfelt tribute to a beloved Bollywood playback singer. Though a remix by Fatboy Slim unexpectedly brought the track to modern rock radio, Cornershop stayed largely in the underground, never hitting the charts again. Join us as we explore this one-of-a-kind band’s lasting impact and debate whether they deserved more time in the spotlight.

They share insights and takeaways, reflecting on how the genre’s polished melodies and heartfelt lyrics became iconic, while also addressing the misconceptions about what truly makes a song “yacht rock.” Tune in for a conversation that’s as smooth as the sound itself!

This week, we’re joined by Jacob Godbey, who’s ready to belt out his go-to karaoke hit, “Lips of an Angel” by Hinder—a song that’s recently found new life (and irony) on TikTok. But as we dive into this unapologetic butt rock ballad, one question keeps coming up: is this the worst song we’ve ever covered? With a storyline that’s practically a love letter to infidelity, “Lips of an Angel” has all the makings of a track we’d love to hate. But could the rest of Hinder’s catalog change our minds? Tune in to find out if there’s more to this band than their bittersweet, forbidden anthem.

This week, we’re joined by Joel Reader to talk about Neneh Cherry’s 1989 hit “Buffalo Stance,” a bold, genre-blending anthem that poses the age-old question, “Who’s that gigolo on the street?” In an era when female hip-hop was just breaking into the mainstream, Neneh brought a fiercely feminist tone that feels more relevant now than ever. Together, Joel, Matt, and I dig into the song’s fearless style and attitude, asking whether Neneh Cherry deserves to be celebrated beyond this iconic track.

With his background as a music professor, Mark takes us through the strange and often challenging journey of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, who unexpectedly scored an Alternative Radio hit with their Cab Calloway-inspired song "Hell." One of our most prolific podcast guests, Johnny Yetsconish, is back with one of the most iconic rap songs of the '90s: Skee-Lo's 1995 hit single "I Wish." In the thick of gangsta rap, a 19-year-old Skee-Lo took the radio by storm with a G-rated rap song about being a "little bit taller" and dreaming of popularity and success with the ladies. This anthem of a hopeless romantic has left a lasting impact not just on the three of us, but on the hip-hop community as a whole. Unfortunately, due to a bad contract with a shady record label, Skee-Lo retired from music at the peak of his popularity. This week, we listen to his music and decide if we WISH he had stuck around longer. Join us as we dive into the story behind the song that made everyone wish they were a baller.

If you've ever seen an attractive woman appear in a movie or TV show, chances are you're familiar with Yello's iconic song "Oh Yeah." Mike Soboslai is back again with his BIGGEST song yet. Mr. Big's campfire sing-along ballad "To Be With You" was a surprise hit in 1992, especially as the grunge era was taking hold. This infectious tune was dramatically different from the band's usual intricate hard rock style, showcasing a softer side that few saw coming. Known for their technical prowess and complex compositions, Mr. Big's other fan favorites include the blistering "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind" and the shred-heavy "Addicted to That Rush." Despite never recapturing their U.S. success, Mr. Big became (and remained) HUGE in Japan. Join us as we explore the band's career and see if we've been missing out here in the States. And yes, we’ll even touch on their more... uniquely titled tracks like "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy."

Written by lead singer Corinne Drewery while recovering from a fractured skull, the song emerged during a stressful period when the band was worried about being dropped from their label. The band, known for their distinctive blend of jazz, pop, and sophisticated production, has maintained a loyal fan base and continues to release music that resonates deeply with listeners. This week, we're taking a little turn on the catwalk with special guest PJ Caruso as we dive into the early '90s phenomenon that is Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy." It's almost baffling that we have to say this, but if you're listening in the UK, you already know that Right Said Fred is far from a one-hit wonder in their home country. We've covered Deion Sanders and Eddie Murphy on the podcast, but there's still a treasure trove of celebrities turned musicians to discuss. However, the case of Bruce Willis is extra strange. A year before Die Hard transformed him from a TV star to a full-blown movie star, he released the album The Return of Bruno, featuring the Top 10 hit "Respect Yourself." This album of mostly cover songs was released on Motown Records and received very modest reviews from critics. But will Bruce Willis get modest reviews from the harsh critics of One Hit Thunder? As a young dreamer, Larson headed to San Francisco, where her talent quickly caught the attention of noteworthy artists, leading to collaborations with legends like Neil Young. As luck would have it, she discovered "Lotta Love" on a demo tape lying on the floor of Neil's car. Her voice paired with his song turned it into a hit. Patreon voted for this, so we're diving deep into the world of weed and hip-hop with Luniz (yes, their name is pronounced "Loonies") and their 1995 hit "I Got 5 On It." Both Matt and I were blown away by just how massive this song was when it dropped—contrary to what you might think, it was already a Top 10 hit long before it was resurrected by Jordan Peele’s movie Us. And let's not forget, Luniz boasts the most insane logo we've ever seen—seriously, it’s GROSS and hilarious. In this week’s episode, we dive into the Canadian rock band Default and their 2001 hit "Wasting My Time," a song that left an indelible mark on what many would call the "butt rock" genre. Our Patreon supporters voted for this track, so Matt and I are breaking down the elements that make this tune both memorable and, in some ways, quintessentially generic rock. Default's name feels fitting as we struggle to pin down any genre beyond that. Despite their breakup in 2013, the band's lead singer Dallas Smith took a surprising twist in his career that has us scratching our heads about the Canadian charts. Today, the new Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F movie has dropped on Netflix, and in honor of that, Matt and I decided to dive into the iconic theme song "Axel F," written by Harold Faltermeyer. We explore the artistry behind this unforgettable tune, marvel at the intense talent of composer Harold Faltermeyer, and try to pinpoint the last time an instrumental song topped the charts. Join us as we celebrate this synth masterpiece and its lasting impact on both music and pop culture, just in time for Eddie Murphy's triumphant return as Axel Foley.

Ah, the 80s—a time when every celebrity had a secret (or not-so-secret) desire to dominate the music charts. But no actor-turned-singer had a more meteoric rise—and equally swift backlash—than Eddie Murphy. His Rick James-penned chorus for "Party All the Time" might be an earworm you can't escape, but let's be real: the rest of the song is as forgettable as a VHS tape in a Netflix era. This week, we've got a special guest who knows a thing or two about catchy tunes: podcaster and Less Than Jake frontman Chris DeMakes joins us to dive into Eddie Murphy's lone radio hit.

Labeling RuPaul as a one-hit wonder seems preposterous in theory. RuPaul has not only hosted a successful talk show and appeared in multiple hit films but also helms the immensely successful RuPaul’s Drag Race. In this episode, we dive into the infectious groove of Warren G's 1994 smash hit "Regulate," featuring the smooth vocals of the "King of Hooks," Nate Dogg. While we're taking some liberties with what constitutes a one hit wonder, we're willing to wager that amidst a few other notable chart appearances, you're most familiar with the iconic "Regulate." It's a perfect storm of a great sample, Warren G's laid-back rap style, and perfect storytelling reminiscent of Slick Rick, all converging to create one of the greatest rap songs of all time. If you were putting together an informercial for a compilation of ‘90s hits, it’s almost certain that a clip of Jesus Jones “Right Here Right Now” would snag a good 8 second chunk of it. During an era dominated by TRL and boy bands, soulDecision's "Faded" resonated with its infectious melody, showcasing the band’s unique fusion of musicianship and pop sensibilities (a formula that worked wonders only a few years later for Maroon 5). Setting themselves apart from the manufactured acts of the time, the band not only wrote their own songs but also skillfully played their own instruments. Yet, despite this authenticity, their moment in the limelight proved fleeting. This week, SayQuoi owner Jenae Thompson joins us to unravel the mysteries behind soulDecision's brief fame, questioning whether mismanagement alone dictated their demise. Their narrative serves as a sobering reminder of the delicate balance between artistic integrity and the unpredictable currents of the music industry. In stark contrast to the lyrics of “Faded”, soulDecision's journey reminds us that making what seems like the right move in the moment might not always be best.

“Crush” became a surprise hit for the previously unknown Jennifer Paige in the fall of 1998. If you reflect on the joyous music that graced the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 2015, it would be hard to believe that people were engaged in activities beyond falling in love and relishing a warm breeze. No song illustrated this point more vividly than OMI’s “Cheerleader,” a whimsical tropical tune that soared to the coveted #1 spot on the charts. However, the question remains: why didn’t the US clamor for more of OMI, considering he undeniably had songs worthy of being soundtracks to fireworks and hula hoop sessions? Hey now, hey now, One Hit Thunder’s back! This week, we're stepping back in time to explore the fascinating story behind one of the early '60s most beloved hits. A group of talented teenagers from New Jersey, The Angels, joined forces with three brilliant songwriters to craft “My Boyfriend’s Back”, a timeless classic that was inspired by a real-life incident. This week, we’re taking flight with the Scottish band Pilot and their timeless hit “Magic”. Together with our guest Kai Dodson, we get right to the point: does selling out and changing the lyrics to your hit to hawk pharmaceuticals change the legacy of a song? We also dive into Pilot’s musical journey that intersected with an impressive array of legendary musicians and bands. Stay tuned to see if we think the sun should continue to shine on the creators of this pop gem, or if we think the magic is gone after we’ve heard the Ozempic commercial one too many times.

Today, we're diving into the infectious world of Stereo MCs and their iconic track, "Connected." Even if you think you don't know it, chances are you've crossed paths with this chart-topping British group's masterpiece, thanks to a cleverly placed sample and irresistible vocal melody that propelled them onto the US charts. These musical innovators also made waves by producing remixes for some of the biggest artists of their time. Despite their rise to fame in the early 90s, it took them over a decade to follow up their hit album, and they never quite replicated that mainstream success. Patreon wanted us to explore the Stereo MCs journey, so stay tuned as we uncover whether we truly connected with this group or if the writing was on the wall since the song's release.

It’s no surprise that Prince was a fan of Jane Child. After a bidding war between 14 labels in which she demanded complete creative control, this Toronto-based artist wrote, produced, and performed every note of her debut album. Her funky pop single “Don’t Wanna Fall In Love” skyrocketed to #2 on the Billboard Charts in 1990, opening the door of endless possibility for this Canadian badass with an unforgettable look. So why are we discussing her on One Hit Thunder? We asked ourselves the same thing. Stay tuned to find out.

“I like big butts and I cannot lie.” No, that wasn’t a Winston Churchill quote. It’s the iconic first lyric of Seattle-based rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot’s 1992 smash hit “Baby Got Back”. While your grandma’s out cuttin’ a rug at the wedding reception to a song about anacondas and gettin’ sprung, it can often be forgotten that the song is actually an anthem of body positivity. His music tends to walk a fine line between well-intentioned and super horny, so this week, we’ll dial 1-900-MIXALOT and see if we can kick some thoughts about why he could never repeat the success of this song.

Regardless of whether you know the name Norman Greenbaum or not, you most DEFINITELY know his hit 1969 song “Spirit In the Sky”. This uplifting single has appeared in countless movies, TV shows, and commercials, with its use showing no sign of slowing over five decades later. This week, we’re joined by Rock and Roll Candle Co. founder Samm Strangeland to get spiritual about Greenbaum, and decide if he should’ve kept pumping out hits OR if his goats just needed him more than we did.

When you hear the name Positive K, you probably think of One Hit Thunder producer Matt Kelly, who is definitely one of the most positive human beings you'll ever meet. Alas, we're not talking about THAT Positive K, but instead, rapper Daryl Gibson whose early '90s hit "I Got a Man" took the airwaves by storm. K's upbeat vibe was so irresistible that even the legendary Aretha Franklin couldn't help but be a fan. Also, you might want to break out some potholders because you could lose your grip when you hear which phrase Positive K possibly coined, only to see it rise to fame in the hands of another rapper years later. In today’s episode, we’ll decide if Positive K has the skills dat pay da bills or if he’s just crabbin’.

In the Spring of 1983, 'Til Tuesday transformed from a new band into the winners of Boston’s Rock & Rumble competition. After quickly securing a deal with Epic Records, they released their debut album Voices Carry. Thanks to regular airplay on MTV, the title track rose to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sadly, this unique band could never again match the success of the song. This week, we’re joined by writer, musician, and Aimee Mann enthusiast Daniel Corey to discuss why we believe 'Til Tuesday's voices should have carried them much higher up the charts.

You know that awesome Bruce Springsteen song “On The Dark Side” that actually isn’t Bruce Springsteen at all? That’s John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band, and I’d venture to say that I’m not alone in thinking it was The Boss for many years. Despite the song’s lyrics that illustrate Meredith Brooks’ multitude of qualities and flaws, it’s the first line of the chorus of “Bitch” that turned heads in 1997. After a long music career that spanned three decades, this undeniably catchy pop song put the veteran singer and guitarist on the map. The song felt empowering and special when it came out, but how does it hold up now? And did Meredith turn out to be an artist we SHOULD actually be paying attention to? Just when we think we got her figured out, the season’s already changin’ on today’s episode.

In 1999, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann had an unexpected radio hit with “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)”, a near perfect spoken-word piece that offered god-tier level advice to graduating seniors. It’s hard to explain why this song works or how powerful it is without just breaking down every word of it, so we did just that. Joining us this week is brilliant documentarian Taylor Morden, who’s currently immersed in the creation of his upcoming feature Getting Lost. The Lost television series was a phenomenon that left millions of viewers scratching their collective head each week. That sense of wonder continues even today, as both mine and Matt’s tiny little brains were blown at the fact that Malcolm David Kelley — aka Walt from Lost — is one half of the pop duo MKTO, who had a Top 20 hit with “Classic” in 2013. Did these guys bring the musical thunder though? “We have to go back” to find out!

WELL MAYBE you thought this band was someone else. AND MAYBE you’re thinking “didn’t they have a few other hits?” The reality is that while Candlebox did well enough on Alternative Radio to get a main stage slot at Woodstock ’94, they only had one song that charted on the Billboard Hot 100. The powerful demo (yes, DEMO) “Far Behind” became their signature song, launching their debut album to quadruple platinum status. But did WE treat Candlebox bad? Let’s get this out of the way right now: Melanie is technically a two hit wonder and an influential singer-songwriter powerhouse whose songs have been covered by some of the most beloved artists in music history. Despite all that, the average joe — aka all of us on this podcast — only know “Brand New Key”, the unintentionally sexual song that made a huge impression on many of us thanks to its association with a certain movie character on roller skates. Do you remember the 1987 movie Hiding Out, in which Jon Cryer stars as a state’s witness who pretends to be a high school student to avoid getting killed by the mob? Probably not. Did Looking Glass pretty much CREATE the yacht rock genre by writing a song about a man choosing his love of the sea over the love of a woman? “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” made it all the way to the top of the Billboard charts in 1972, and the song stayed in the public consciousness ever since…except in the instance of this week’s guest PJ Caruso, who somehow didn’t know this song until he heard it in Guardians of the Galaxy. Synth pioneer Gary Numan was overwhelmingly bashed by critics upon his surge to the top of the UK charts in the early 80s. Music writers may not have been ready for Numan’s futuristic sound, but fans surely were. By the time he decided to take a hiatus from touring, he was doing multiple nights at Wembley Arena, not to mention opening doors for acts such as The Human League, Depeche Mode, and OMD. In the Fall of 1998, Shawn Mullins took the radio waves by storm with “Lullaby” — an unforgettable song about the woes of a young girl in Hollywood. For some people, Thomas Dolby might be considered only a blip on the 80s music radar — the wild-haired, bespectacled Englishman with the song where someone yells “SCIENCE!” The more knowledgable music connoisseurs, however, know very well how much influence this new wave icon had and continues to have on legions of electronic music artists. This week, we’re joined by Huffamoose drummer Erik Johnson to discuss the long-term impact Dolby has had on music, the unforgettable music video for “She Blinded Me With Science”, and we even dive into Erik’s personal recollections from when Huffamoose played the main stage at Woodstock ’94.

Marcy Playground’s “Sex & Candy” was a bonafide hit in 1997, spending an impressive 15 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Songs chart. Calling the Queen of Bubblegum Pop a one hit wonder just feels wrong. To Carly Rae’s cult following, it feels like she has released hit after hit over the years. A quick internet search of her Billboard chart success, however, reveals the shocking truth… “Call Me Maybe” is really her only mainstream hit. Regardless, here at One Hit Thunder, we know that an incredible and prolific career rarely has anything to do with charts, and Carly Rae Jepsen is no exception to that rule. This week, we’re joined by author Erik Brown to completely fanboy out over one of pop’s most likable artists.

Filmmaker, director, and Valencia guitarist Brendan Walter was one of thirty-two students sued by the RIAA for downloading music while he was attending Drexel University, and we have to wonder if one of the songs he LimeWired was the 1996 Donna Lewis pop gem “I Love You Always Forever”. This Welsh artist took a nursery rhyme chorus and made Billboard history, which was clearly a magical time full of exotic sweetness that made an impact on Brendan as he laid under a blue sky with pure white stars.

Last week, we talked about kissing the rain. This week, The Weather Girls are letting us know that the rain is actually MEN! Our Patreon members voted that we should discuss this early 80s gay anthem, and we couldn’t wait to do so. Will we throw thunder on this duo that was formerly known as Two Tons O’ Fun? Stay tuned to find out how we feel about the powerful voices that brought us “It’s Raining Men”!

If not for a problematic movie trailer, this week’s guest would have entirely forgotten the existence of a massive 1997 single from Billie Myers. This hit exploded onto the radio — perhaps from being utilized in the second season of Dawson’s Creek — before it quickly fell off the charts and disappeared. In this episode, filmmaker and Horror Movie Night co-host Kyle Kuchta asks us ALL to “Kiss the Rain”!

In 1991, Extreme released “More Than Words”, an acoustic love ballad unlike any of the band’s previous output. Although A&M Records didn’t want to release the song as a single, the band’s insistence paid off. The song shot to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and presumably resulted in a lot of babies named Nuno in years to come. This week, we’re joined by singer-songwriter Allie Goertz, and she’ll tell us how she feels (and if her love for Extreme is real!)

Never have our minds been as blown on One Hit Thunder as when we dove into the life and career of Michael Penn. From his famous siblings to his work on landmark films, Michael’s story couldn’t be further from the norm. But don’t even THINK about throwing the “nepotism” accusation around here…Penn is the real deal. This week, we dive into his catalog and discover that it’s NO MYTH that Michael Penn is undeniable thunder.

Hello, fellow slobs! This week, we’re diving into Joan Osborne and her inescapable 1996 hit, “One of Us”. Written on a whim by Eric Bazilian of The Hooters, the song asks important questions about a supposed higher power, including “if God had a face, what would it look like?” Well, WE’D speculate that he or she MIGHT look like this week’s guest…Meeting Of Important People’s Josh Verbanets! Will we put thunder on Joan’s name, or would we rather she remain a stranger on the bus tryin’ to make her way home? Stay tuned to find out.

Local H carved out a niche for themselves in the mid 90s, landing somewhere in between grunge and indie rock. The hypnotic single “Bound For The Floor” was a Gen X anthem, cleverly using the word “copacetic” to exhibit a feeling of dissatisfaction with life. This two-piece band made a lasting impression on this week’s guest — Wells, Maine’s own Spose — even if this particular single wasn’t the reason why.

We often forget that artists might tune in to One Hit Thunder to hear us offer our sometimes misinformed and ALWAYS overly opinionated thoughts on their music. One of these artists — John Hampson of Nine Days — was gracious enough to not only listen to our episode on “Absolutely (Story of a Girl)”, but also to kindly send us a series of tweets correcting some things we didn’t get quite right. A few years later, he’s here with us to discuss a band that he spent a lot of time with on the road back in the day. Does Stroke 9’s “Little Black Backpack” make John want to tango, or does this catchy pop-rock classic make him want to bash his head in? Stay tuned to find out.

In 1996, two siblings from Belgium had an unexpected alternative hit that sounds unlike anything else from the era. The single “Not An Addict” caught fire and became an international hit, grabbing the attention of even Alanis Morissette, who handpicked the band to open for her on tour. Beyond diving into the track and the band, we force Matt Kelly to make some of his OWN K’s Choices in this fun and informative episode.

The story of T. Rex’s Marc Bolan is one of those rock n’ roll fables that seems so trite that it MUST have been written by some second-rate Hollywood screenwriter. The truth, however, is that Marc Bolan’s tale serves as the BASIS for these overused rock clichés, as he led a wild (and unfortunately short) life full of fame, excess, pageantry, and incredible music. This week, we’re joined by actor and musician Danny Tamberelli to dive into the history of the Godfather of Glam Rock. Together, we try to figure out how “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” was T. Rex’s only US hit, considering The Beatles themselves claim that T-Rextasy was bigger than Beatlemania ever was in the UK.

In the mid 70s, Wild Cherry thrived in all the funk and disco hot spots, from the Northern West Virginia panhandle to the Ohio Valley region. People were getting down to the sweet sounds of “Play That Funky Music” in Steubenville, Ohio, all the way to the bright lights of the big city…of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The groundswell created by the band’s popularity in these areas took the song all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts, which was unfortunately a peak they’d never come close to again. This week, we’re joined by John Franklin (The Circle Season 4) to discuss the history and legacy of Wild Cherry, a band that’s been the soundtrack to dancin’, singin’, movin’, groovin’, and one-night stands for decades.

Welcome to the most bass-heavy episode of One Hit Thunder ever! Thanks to Level 42’s 1985 hit single “Something About You”, we get into a LOT of talk about the best instrument in the world…the good old electric bass. Midnight Oil shined a light on the plight of the Aboriginal communities in the Australian Outback with their 1987 hit “Beds Are Burning”. This anthemic song is widely considered one of the greatest pieces of music to ever come out of Australia, and any Australian listeners will likely be shocked that we’re discussing this band on a podcast about one hit wonders. The charts don’t lie, however, and this was Midnight Oil’s only Top 40 Billboard hit in the US. This week, we’re joined by Zao guitarist Scott Mellinger to decide if this band makes us want to dance when our earth is turnin’ or sleep while our beds are burnin’.

In 1993, the world was introduced to a white Canadian reggae artist named Snow. His hit song “Informer” topped the US Billboard charts for nearly two months straight, while Snow himself sat in a prison cell for maybe or maybe not puncturing another human being with a knife (aka stabbing them). This semi-autobiographical tune echoed a warning to whoever snitched on him, in the form of being “licky boom boomed down” by the artist himself. Are we risking this fate ourselves by discussing Snow this week, or is the assault on our eardrums punishment enough? Stay tuned to find out!

Sometimes we have to bend the rules to qualify artists as appropriate subject matter for One Hit Thunder, but not this week. Deadeye Dick are an undeniable choice, as they are almost universally known ONLY for their catchy pop rock hit “New Age Girl”. The songwriting duo Boy Meets Girl wrote chart-topping songs for several iconic artists, but it wasn’t until their 1988 single “Waiting for a Star to Fall” that they made a name for themselves as performers. The song was an enduring adult contemporary juggernaut, even finding its way into the hit film Three Men and a Little Lady a few years later. Even after their marriage ended, their song collaborations forged ahead, and they continue to release pop gems even today. This week, we explore their story and their songs, and we try to decide if Boy really should have met Girl in the first place.

The holiday season is here once again. To celebrate, we’re discussing the bizarre case of The Waitresses, which are a band that we’re able to discuss on One Hit Thunder because they’re a one hit wonder in two different countries for two different songs. While “Christmas Wrapping” is now considered a Christmas classic, it wasn’t well-known in the US until many years after its release. Meanwhile, “I Know What Boys Like” was ONLY a hit in the States. This week, we’re diving into the short-lived career of this Akron, Ohio band to determine if they bring the holiday cheer or leave us with a holiday sneer.

Today is our 150th episode, so we had to bring the heat with an undeniable 80s jam. Spandau Ballet may have formed out of a love for the Sex Pistols, but their 1983 musical love letter “True” was inspired by the soulful sounds of Al Green and Marvin Gaye. This smooth pop classic dominated the radio airwaves for years, but we needed to know more. Can Producer Matt Kelly pronounce their name? Is “True” really Adam Sandler’s favorite song? Did Spandau Ballet TRULY bring the one hit thunder? On this week’s show, we ask the important questions about this well-dressed band.

Against all odds, a song completely sung in German floated all the way up to #2 on the Billboard charts in 1983, rising above some of the biggest artists of the 80s. Even more surprising, the danceable pop gem “99 Luftballons” was actually a protest song about a theoretical nuclear war. This week, we’re joined by Cheer Up Dusty vocalist Justin Humenik to find out if we should all pick up a few Nena records with the money we’ve got, or if we should think of them and let it go.

After two decades of pursuing a music career, a 30 year old Canadian singer named Alannah Myles scored a #1 hit in 1989 with “Black Velvet”. While her success continued for years after in the Great White North, she completely fell off the Billboard charts of the United States. This week, we try to determine if the blame for her US decline should fall on the lack of promotion from her record label, or if the rest of Alannah’s catalog just lacked that slow southern style.

We’ve discussed close to 150 one hit wonders on the podcast at this point, but none have had as bizarre of a series of events that led to a hit as Primitive Radio Gods. Producer Matt Kelly considers “Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand” not only a song title that he’s sure to butcher in this episode, but also a song that he considers one of the greatest of the 90s. Does the rest of the band’s catalog live up to the moody vibe of this jam though? Originally intended to be a theme song and nothing more, “I’ll Be There For You” gave The Rembrandts a Top 20 Billboard hit on the wings of NBC’s juggernaut of a sitcom Friends. The visual that the song provokes in everyone’s mind, however — that of a group of white twenty-something Manhattanites dancing and clapping around a fountain — soon led to the band actually apologizing for the song on MTV News. This week, High School Slumber Party’s Brian Rodriguez joins us to discuss not only the career of The Rembrandts, but also his fandom of the 90s sitcom.

Hey Party People! One Hit Thunder back again. This week, the REAL tag team - myself and my co-host and producer Matt Kelly - jump in the ring with the massive stadium anthem “Whoomp (There It Is)”. The song never REALLY went away, but a recent resurgence thanks to an ice cream themed insurance commercial exposed this party classic to a whole new generation. In 2010, a song by a ten-piece hippie folk pop group unexpectedly started appearing in seemingly endless amounts of movies, TV shows, and commercials. This sincere and lively tune caught the ear and heart of this week’s guest Tessa Markle, who later found herself dancing and singing along to them at an Arts Festival. The singsong love ballad leaves all of us asking what “home” really means, and if we should all be more hot and heavy pumpkin pie over Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

Phantom Planet had a modest radio hit with their single “California” in 2002. When a little TV show called The O.C. debuted and used the song as its theme song, however, it skyrocketed the band to stardom. The album The Guest was not just a favorite of this week’s guest Matt “Team Goldie” DiStefano, but it also had a permanent place in the CD rotation on early Punchline tours. When it came time for Phantom Planet to record a follow-up album, their shift in sound led to a slide off the charts. This week, we’re driving down the 101 and looking for the number one reason this great band didn’t reach even greater heights.

There’s a good chance that if someone mentioned the song “But It’s Alright” by J.J. Jackson, you would say “uh…how does that one go?”. Being that Matthew Milligan is currently our most frequent guest, we tend to give him a little more leeway with his song choices. That being said, he chose Kid Sister and her minor 2008 hit “Pro Nails”. Prior to this episode, neither producer Matt Kelly nor myself had ever heard this song from the Chicago based artist, which is surprising because it features Kanye West during a very prolific era of his career. But hey, this is what One Hit Thunder is all about: discovering music we may have missed otherwise. So get your toes done up with your fingernails matchin’, and join us for a deep dive into Kid Sister.

Our Patreon supporters voted, and they made it clear…they said YOU GOTTA BE crazy if you don’t do an episode about Des’ree! Don’t worry Patreon, we’re not crazy…but we ARE bad, bold, wise, hard, tough, strong, cool, calm, together, and everything other positive self-affirmation you can imagine. But did the signature Des’ree mix of pop and soul make us want to listen as our day unfolds, or leave us challenging what the future holds? Listen to find out.

In the early 90s, London-based producer Geoff Wilkinson was given full access to legendary jazz label Blue Note Records’ entire discography to use samples in his project Us3. The resulting album Hand On The Torch mixed modern hip-hop with classic jazz, and on the heels of the first single “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)”, the record quickly ascended to the top 10 on the Billboard charts. Today on the show, we dive into the rest of Us3’s music to decide if there should’ve been a few more biddy-biddy bops in the mainstream, or if this project was just too funky funky to enjoy more success.

This week, we dive into the band James and their somewhat raunchy 90s hit “Laid”. Return guest Tony Hartman joins us to dissect the lyrics that he sang as a kid in front of his mom, long before he knew what any of them meant. Did we uncover a deeper SECRET meaning to the words, or are they nothing more than American Pie soundtrack fodder? Stay tuned to find out if our beds are on fire for James, or if we think they should be laid to rest.

I am most definitely a sucker for all songs that have an associated dance. I know this is an audio-only podcast, but I can say FOR SURE say that you’d all have enjoyed watching One Hit Thunder producer Matt Kelly “walk the dinosaur” when we recorded this episode. We recorded this one as another episode of our “Ya Snooze, Ya Lose” category, since we’re pushing 150 episodes and no one has chosen it yet. We expected to have a funny conversation about a goofy dance song from the late 80s. What we DIDN’T expect was just how crazy of a career the guys in Was (Not Was) have had. You most certainly don’t want to miss this T-rex of an episode. Stay tuned!

In the late 90s, three DJs living in Italy spent a few hours creating a club track that couldn’t even keep people on the dance floor. That would quickly change thanks to a little radio airplay, and before they knew it, “Blue” became an international hit. The song is equal parts catchy and silly, but what exactly is it about? This week, we’re joined by Eric Taft to help figure it out. Beyond producing, engineering, and playing in The Great Heights Band and So Fetch, Eric is also secretly one of Eiffel 65’s biggest fans. He helps us dive into the lyrics of “Blue” and figure out what’s really happening in this Europop classic.

My good friend and musical collaborator Paul Menotiades always brings the heat with his song choices. Paul joins the four-timer club this week, and he follows up episodes about Harvey Danger, EMF, and the Dead Milkmen with yet ANOTHER classic banger in “I Love You More Today Than Yesterday” by Spiral Starecase. This enduring love anthem appeared on the band’s one and only album before their breakup, but did the rest of the album bring the thunder as much as this one did? Stay tuned to find out.

It’s mind-boggling how many guests have passed on the opportunity to talk about City High’s catchy-yet-serious 1999 jam “What Would You Do?”, so Matt and I had no choice but to institute a new “Ya Snooze, Ya Lose” category of One Hit Thunder episodes and do this one ourselves. We can’t even imagine who WOULDN’T want to discuss this highly danceable song about having to do whatever it takes to feed your child, which also inexplicably breaks into Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode” halfway through. What would WE do without this catchy yet lyrically-heavy hit? Stay tuned to find out.

Our Patreon really swung for the fences by choosing K7’s 1993 hit “Come Baby Come” as the song we’re diving into this week. Did you know that K7 was just one guy, and not the name of the group of four men who seem to be featured in every music video? Neither did we. And in this episode, we REALLY try to determine if this song is about beckoning a woman to come closer, OR if it really IS just about bodily fluids. In 1993, the band Green Jellÿ had an unlikely Top 20 hit with their song “Three Little Pigs”, which was a twisted, rockin’ version of a story that we’re all familiar with from childhood. A crudely animated yet unforgettable music video helped launch this song into the stratosphere, and it has remained lodged in many of our brains for 30 years now. This week, we’re joined by Another Cheetah guitarist Matt Jurcevich to discuss whether we should all let Green Jellÿ in, or if we need to call Rambo to take care of this wild one hit wonder.

First time guest Scott Klopfenstein came in HOT for his debut appearance, ready to discuss quite possibly the most heartbreaking casualty of the grunge era. The lush compositions and Willy Wonka inspired look of Jellyfish lacked only one thing: timing. Had they existed a few years earlier or later, the band’s trajectory may have been unstoppable. Instead, they got washed away by a sea of flannel and apathy. Is Jellyfish the baby we wish would come back? Stick around to find out.

In the early 2000s, cussing was still considered shocking. Nowadays, everyone from toddlers to great-grandmas are dropping F-bombs and C-words like they aren’t even cusses. In 2004, Staten Island ho-wop singer Eamon knew that the days of having a hit song purely because of swear words were almost over, so he took a big swing and hit a homerun with “F**k It (I Don’t Want You Back)”. No matter how many bad words he based entire songs around after that though, he could never match the success again. This week, we’re joined by Jim Logrando to determine if we ourselves actually DO want Eamon and his filthy mouth back.

One Hit Thunder producer Matt Kelly has brought up the band Flobots on several occasions on the show, so it was only right that an entire episode was finally dedicated to their 2008 single “Handlebars”. The turn of the century brought an explosion of music that combined pop sensibility with the spirit of rock. Bands like Sum 41 and Dashboard Confessional entered the mainstream and stayed there, building back catalogs of memorable songs and influencing young artists. Other groups - like this week’s artist American Hi-Fi - got lost in the shuffle. Today, we’re joined by Femme Regard co-host Tessa Markle to discuss whether American Hi-Fi should have been more than just the flavor of the week.

This week, we’re joined by my good friend Joey Ritter to discuss Martika, a Kids Incorporated success story who scored a #1 hit with her heavy single “Toy Soldiers”. The song serves as a vague cautionary tale about the dangers of cocaine addiction, but it’s hard to interpret how Martika herself factors into the equation. Is she the voice of reason, or was she at any point the voice encouraging a friend to enjoy another key bump? We’d assume she was the sensible one, but one viewing of her INTENSE dancing in some other music videos left us asking questions. Step by step, heart to heart, left right left, we all fall down…into another great episode of One Hit Thunder!

Today, we are joined by WYEP DJ Joey Spehar to discuss a band that feels crazy to call a one hit wonder - The Grateful Dead. Not even a legitimate Deadhead like Joey can deny, however, that 1987’s “Touch of Grey” was the iconic band’s only charting hit. The song “How Bizarre” from New Zealand’s OMC was first released in 1995, but it wasn’t until 1997 that it made its mark on the US Billboard charts. This hard-to-classify hit tends to be very polarizing among listeners. The strange mashup of musical styles, the unique vocal delivery, and the incomplete lyrical story leaves some listeners delighted and other listeners downright annoyed. This week, we’re joined by Dustin Rubin of the Two Dollar Late Fee podcast to decide if we WANT to buy the rights to the rest of OMC’s story.

BBMak had it all…good looks, great harmonies, relatable lyrics, and a smash hit single with “Back Here”. Pogoing to new wave music in clubs is a god-given right, and no one knows this better than Men Without Hats frontman Ivan Doroschuck. He got his revenge on the bouncers that tried to keep his feet on the ground by writing “The Safety Dance”, a song that truly defined the mood of the early 80s. Was it the infectious melodies and massive synths that took the song to great heights, or could it POSSIBLY be for another reason (that we’ve LINED UP in this episode)? Craig Mack’s “Flava In Ya Ear” was the first single released by Bad Boy Records in 1994. Mack was left in the shadows, but his story only gets crazier from there. Wheatus bassist Matthew Milligan makes his third appearance on the show this week. Instead of going the usual route of discussing an artist he loves, he changed it up by choosing a band that he was unsure about. The Vines were once considered “the saviors of rock n’ roll” by some publications, but in a strange turn of events, at least one of these outlets later apologized for the delivering the crown so flippantly. Should we all have paid more attention to The Vines, or were we lucky to “Get Free” of them when we did? Stay tuned to find out.

While the 90s were full of bands that got signed during the peak of grunge, few bands had the long history and the genre-bending talent of Cracker. The band first broke with their song “Teen Angst”, but it was “Low” that really delivered them into the ears of the mainstream. Our Patreon supporters wanted us to discuss this one, so we took a crack at it.

Christian folk group Sixpence None The Richer had an unexpected mainstream explosion with their song “Kiss Me”, after it was featured in the 90s teen film “She’s All That”. Beyond a few low charting cover songs, however, they quickly fell out of the public consciousness. This week, we’re joined by Russ Burlingame - author of the new book “Best Movie Ever: The Oral History of Elfont & Kaplan’s Josie and the Pussycats” - to discuss the band whose music will always be associated with Rachael Leigh Cook.

Few bands have ever been helped more by a music video than OK Go. They had faith in their own music when their record label didn’t, and they took advantage of internet virality to launch their career. Unique, eye-catching videos continue to be their thing, but the choreographed treadmill routine of “Here It Goes Again” will forever be the legacy of the band among people who only know them in passing. Is it worth going the extra mile to listen to more of their music though? Tune in to find out!

1994 was a landmark year for both music and film. Somewhere in that whirlwind of Dookie and the Shawshank Redemption, the Downward Spiral and Forrest Gump, and The Blue Album and Pulp Fiction was LUCAS. No, not the 1986 Corey Haim movie…we’re talking about the Danish rapper Lucas, and his single “Lucas With The Lid Off”. The song was in regular rotation on MTV, thanks partly to a Michel Gondry directed music video. This week, Tony Hartman returns to the show to discuss this jazz rap / electro swing jam. Did we catch the vibe, or was he was a ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba ba-ba ba-blunder? Tune in to this week’s episode to find out!

We let the members of our new Patreon page vote for an episode, and they overwhelmingly chose Go West’s song “King of Wishful Thinking” from the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Did we listen to the talk of the town, or were we just trying to fool ourselves when it comes to one of the MOST adult contemporary songs ever? Tune in to hear us break down this simultaneously happy and heart-wrenching (emphasis on the WRENCH) pop jam.

When you Google the adjective “Cumbersome”, the first thing that comes up is the definition of the word, which is “large or heavy and therefore difficult to carry or use”. The second thing that comes up, however, is a giant YouTube thumbnail image of Seven Mary Three leader singer Jason Ross. Most people, in fact, instantly think of this 1996 modern rock single any time they hear the word, and this week’s guest Trevor Leonard is no exception. Are Seven Mary Three too heavy, too light, too black or too white, too wrong or too right? Tune in to this week’s episode to find out!

With not much more than a spaghetti western soundtrack sample and some off-the-cuff vocals, the collaboration of CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse found themselves at the top of the charts. There was something so pleasant about that place, but unfortunately, Gnarls Barkely were crazy to think that they’d ever reach those heights again.

This week on the show, Chris accomplishes the near-impossible by choosing a song that Matt has never heard: the R&B masterpiece “Candy Rain” by Soul For Real. Greek composer Vangelis hit the top of the charts with the theme from the 1981 film “Chariots of Fire”, unseating Joan Jett from the #1 spot and becoming a staple of running montages for decades to come. In the 60's a group of teenagers recorded the song 96 Tears and indirectly became the godfathers of Punk Rock. With a hypnotic organ and sexually charged lyrics the band ? and the Mysterians created a sound the 60's was not ready for. Geekscape Founder and Music Video director Jonathan London joined us to discuss Tommy Shaw solo single "Girls with Guns". Chances are you may not know Tommy Shaw by name but you know some of the bands he was apart of (Styx, Damn Yankees). His solo song was a mild hit at best but Jonathan discovered it during a rewatch of the Miami Vice TV series and has been hooked ever since.

Sunblind Guitarist Juan Rodriguez joins the show this week while we debate if Squeeze is a one hit wonder. It's a weird Rick Springfield-like scenario but even stranger in which their best known song is their lowest charting single at the time of release. We are tempted to go off on tangents about music as a whole but we squeeze in plenty of fun facts about the iconic early New Wave band SQUEEZE.

Apologies up front for some audio issues throughout this episode.
It only took us six episodes to get to a wildly controversial pick. Rick Springfield had five top 10 singles but the general public only knows one so the point is probably moot.
This week we're joined by Matt DiStefano of Cassettes. Not only is his band heavily influenced by Rick Springfield, but Matt is arguably his biggest fan. Pick up Cassettes LP Wild Heart on https://www.cassettesforever.com/
