One of the trickiest aspects of parenting with ADHD is that, very often, the best parenting strategies -- the ones that help our kids the most -- require calm, well-regulated parents. And that’s not always easy to accomplish when parents have their own big emotions. In this conversation, we’ll identify at least 2 of the 10 main differences in an ADHD brain that create more intense negative emotions (in kids and adults), and get guidance on 2 essential components to manage those challenges. We’ll talk about why ADHD brains feel their feelings so intensely, and how we can manage our own emotions even when our kids are pushing every last button.

Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Marcy Caldwell, Psy.D. about navigating emotions.
Here is what to expect on this week’s show:
Marcy highlights that individuals with ADHD tend to amplify negative stimuli while minimizing positive ones, leading to a cycle of negative emotional feedback and self-perception.
Marcy emphasizes the importance of allowing oneself to experience a range of emotions, including big joy, anger, and sadness.
Marcy shares the concept of decreased early sensory encoding in ADHD brains; this phenomenon causes individuals to process negative information more intensely than positive information, leading to heightened negative emotions.
