Elizabeth Struhs was a bright, beautiful 8-year-old girl whose precious life depended on insulin to manage her diabetes. Tragically, her parents, members of a fringe religious group in Australia called The Saints, followed a strict, literal interpretation of Christianity and the Bible. They rejected modern medicine in favor of prayer, believing it was the only path to healing for Elizabeth.
As a result, this vulnerable little girl—unable to advocate for herself—suffered and died in front of the entire congregation. A room full of adults stood silently, eyes closed in prayer, while refusing to provide Elizabeth the one thing that could have saved her life. For The Saints, every moment of existence was meant to be devoted to worshiping God, no matter the cost—even if that cost was the life of an innocent child.
