Welcome back to Queens Podcast's Wars of the Roses week. Today we're spilling the (trauma) tea on Elizabeth of York. You may know her as the first Tudor Queen, but in this episode we're going over her life during the Wars of the Roses and her part to FINALLY END THE WAR! (tho not quite yet)
Rife with political in-fighting, betrayal, murder, and long periods of refuge in ‘sanctuary.’ This George R. R. Martin-esque tale’s silver lining is after years of being a political pawn and simply trying to survive, Elizabeth of York’s tale ends about as happily as you could ask.
Elizabeth of York’s story includes:
It pairs best with the Rose May (Heyyy) Sangria ([00:02:30] for the recipe).

It's mistress week and today we are talking rags to riches (kind of) in this Cinderalla story (that also includes like... so much adultery). The Katherine Swynford story. Princess Nest aka Nest ferch Rhys came from a very long line of Welsh warriors and kings. However, in her lifetime things took a big shift.
There is more that we DON'T know about her life, but what we know for certain is that she is one of the only women from medieval Wales to be more than a passing footnote in history. In fact, it's said that her beauty caused a civil war.
Okay, no. Men started the civil war, but whatever. That's not as poetic. But does she deserve the title of the Welsh Helen of Troy? You let us know what you think.

And we are back with another historical tarot reading! We're so excited to be joined again by Tandy as we dive into the life of the infamous Elizabeth Bathory.
Elizabeth Bathory has gone down in history as one of the most prolific serial killers of all time. With more money than God, she got away with torture and murder for years, until she was finally caught, convicted and locked up. Or at least, that's how the story goes. Today, we're going to see what the cards have to say about all that.
Content warning: this episode gets a little dark at times. So, if you're not in a headspace for dark stuff today, that's ok! Come back in 2 weeks when we'll resume our regularly scheduled history antics. Cheers!

We are back to finish up the life of Empress Cixi of China. When we last left Cixi, she and her best friend had staged a coup to take over as the effective leaders as regent for her 5 year-old son.
Over the next 50 years, Cixi would rule China and attempt to bring them into the modern age. But things were complicated. Cixi faced several rebellions. The Boxer rebellion, for instance, has been a stain on her reputation even til today.
Dowager Empress Cixi has gone down in history as ruthless and heartless, but that just isn't the whole story. We hop you enjoy!

Welcome back, Beautiful Queens! Today's episode is all about the fascinating life of Empress Cixi of China. She was one of the most powerful women in Chinese history.
Cixi was born in 1835 in a small village in China. She was intelligent and resourceful, and she quickly caught the attention of the emperor's court.
At the age of 16, Cixi was selected to be one of the emperor's concubines. This was a great honor, but it also came with a lot of challenges. Cixi had to navigate the complicated politics of the imperial court, and she had to compete with other concubines for the emperor's attention.
Despite these challenges, Cixi was able to rise through the ranks and become one of the most powerful women in China. She was known for her intelligence, her political savvy, and her ability to get things done.

Who was Yolande of Aragon, you ask? Only one of the most fascinating women in history.
She was the Duchess of Anjou, Countess of Maine, and Queen of Naples. But she was more than just a political figure. Yolande was known for her intelligence and strategic thinking, often advising her husband and sons on matters of state. She was also a patron of the arts and a keen supporter of the poet Christine de Pisan. But perhaps Yolande's most interesting role was as a rumored practitioner of the dark arts. Some historians have suggested that she dabbled in witchcraft, using her powers to help her family in times of need. Whether true or not, Yolande of Aragon is a woman worth knowing.

Today we are discussing the one and only Queen of Rock n Roll, Tina Turner.
BUT OMG CONTENT WARNING, Y'ALL. If you are not in a place to listen to a story that includes a couple of different types of abuse, then this won't be the episode for you. Come back and meet up with us in 2 weeks when we discuss the second part of her life.
Anyway.
Born Anna Mae Bullock Nutbush, Tennessee in 1939, Turner's childhood wasn't exactly a chill one. Tina experienced abandonment from a young age, but found herself living a rock n roll lifestyle by the age of 17 when she met the charismatic Ike Turner. For better or for worse, she was tied to Ike for the next 16 years while experiencing some of the highest highs and lowest lows of her life.

Come with us into the Patreon vault. This episode was done when we were working on our Jane Seymour episode, but felt relevant after our Katherine Howard series too.
Join us on a thrilling journey through time, as we uncover the captivating story of the Pilgrimage of Grace, a massive revolt that shook England in the 1500s. Robert Aske, a Yorkshire lawyer, led the charge against King Henry VIII's religious reforms, which aimed to break away from the Catholic Church. The rebellion brought together folks from all walks of life, united by their passion for England's Catholic traditions and faith. This uprising was a bubbling cauldron of political, religious, and social tensions, leaving an indelible mark on English history. As we unravel this epic tale, we'll also reflect on how the Pilgrimage of Grace echoes through the ages and resonates with us today.

He was 50. It's gross.
Before long, Katherine is the new queen and everything is going really, really well for her.

Born in 1515, Anne grew up in Germany and was the sister of the Duke of Cleves. In 1539, King Henry VIII was on the lookout for a new wife, and Anne was suggested as a suitable candidate. After seeing a portrait of Anne, Henry agreed to the marriage and Anne made her way to England to be wed.
However, upon meeting Anne in person, Henry was disappointed with her appearance and the marriage was never consummated. Nevertheless, Anne remained in England and was granted a generous settlement by the king upon their annulment.
Despite the disappointment of her marriage, Anne remained in England and became a beloved figure at court. She was known for her kindness and intelligence, and even after her death in 1557, she continued to be remembered fondly by those who knew her.
While Anne of Cleves may not have had a successful marriage to King Henry VIII, her story is one of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. She remains a fascinating figure in Tudor history and her legacy continues to be celebrated to this day.

Welcome back to Tudor week, where we are re-running all our episodes on the wives of King Henry VIII of England that we've covered so far. Next up, we have Jane Seymour.
Jane Seymour was the third wife of King Henry VIII, and as she would say in SIX the Musical, "the only one he truly loved (rude)". Jane was a pretty left-field choice for a wife, but would be the one to finally give the aging king the son he wanted so bad.
Jane Seymour didn't have the education of Anne Boleyn or Catherine of Aragon nor the family connections like Anne of Cleves or either of his wives from the Howard family. So, why Jane? Well, we guess you'll need to tune in to...see more. (sorry)

Welcome back to TUDOR WEEK! In this episode, originally from 2018, we dive into the final years of the one and only, Anne Boleyn. Anne Boleyn was a prominent figure in English history, known for her marriage to King Henry VIII but if given the chance we believe she could have been so, so much more.
As Queen, Anne was a key figure in the English Reformation and was instrumental in the establishment of the Church of England. However, her time as Queen was tumultuous, and she faced many political enemies. She was accused of adultery and treason, and after a highly controversial trial, she was executed in 1536.
Despite her short reign and tragic end, Anne remains a fascinating and controversial figure in English history. She continues to inspire novels, films, and television shows, and her legacy lives on to this day.

Who's that girl? It's Anne!
Anne Boleyn is one of the most infamous figures in British history. Her short life is often defined by her marriage to King Henry VIII, her role in the English Reformation, and ultimately, her execution. However, in this episode (part of our Tudor Week celebration), we are taking it back to where it all began. At some place in some year. Yeah, record-keeping wasn't the best in the 16th century.
Anne cut her teeth for politics and royal courts at one of the most prestigious courts belonging to Margaret of Austria (who you can learn more about in our two-part series from earlier this year). This gave her a special advantage and taught her how to conduct herself in a way that would eventually win her many, many admirers. Dukes, Earls, poets.... even kings would find her captivating!
Anne's early life was marked by ambition and determination. She refused to become the king's mistress, insisting that she would only marry him if he could obtain an annulment from Catherine another very fierce lady, Catherine of Aragon. This set in motion a chain of events that would ultimately lead to the English Reformation and Anne's eventual downfall.
But let's not get A HEAD of ourselves (sorry). Enjoy this episode about Anne's rise to infamy and do not Google what happens next.
In this episode we chat:

We've got something a little different for you today!
The Princes in the Tower is a historical mystery that has fascinated people for centuries. The princes are the two young sons of Edward IV of England who entered the Tower of London in 1483 and never seen again.
Many believe they were murdered by their uncle, Richard III, who then became king. The mystery has inspired countless books, plays, and even movies. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the story of the Princes in the Tower continues to capture the imagination of people today. And today, we're getting to the bottom of it!
No, just kidding. This stuff is way too complicated, but we are examining it with some magic from our new best friend, Tandy. We've asked her to come on the show with her tarot deck and help us gain some insight into this historical mystery that has captivated so many for so long.
Also, if you're interested in working with Tandy some more, here's how! You can join her mentoring program or check out any of her other services.

Have you heard of Mamie Phipps Clark? No? Well, that is a shame. So, grab a cocktail or a coffee and get ready for this mini-episode (originally from Patreon 2021) and learn about this amazing pioneer in psychology and civil rights.
Mamie Phipps Clark was a pioneering black psychologist who made significant contributions to the study of race and its effects on child development. Along with her husband, Kenneth Clark, she conducted the landmark doll studies which showed the profound impact of segregation and discrimination on children's self-esteem. This made waves. So much that she got a call from high profile civil rights lawyer, Thurgood Marshall (who would later go on to be the first black US supreme court justice)
Mamie is best known for her study, the doll experiment, was conducted in the 1940s. The experiment played a crucial role in the Brown v. Board of Education case, which challenged the constitutionality of segregation in public schools. The Supreme Court cited the doll experiment in its decision, stating that segregation caused black children to feel inferior and harmed their educational opportunities. Mamie's work was part of what swayed the court to strike down segregation as unconstitutional, paving the way for greater equality and integration in public education.
Enjoy!

Today we've got an episode from the Patreon vault. Over there, Katy jumps on the mic for solo episodes from time to time and does her best to bring you some more obscure stories that maybe you haven't heard anywhere else.
And today, we're discussing Amy Dudley, the wife of Elizabeth I's favorite (and likely lover) Robert Dudley. There are so many discussions about the mysterious death of Amy Robsart Dudley, but so little is made about her life. So, we thought this would be an excellent time to discuss this. Though she never faced the chopping block, could she be considered a victim of the Tudor court too? And because we're only human of course we're a little curious-- what did happen with that mysterious death??
Oh! Also, we mention Katy guesting on an episode of Tudor Dynasty Podcast, reading a review of Becoming Elizabeth. You can listen to that episode here if you like.

Shirley Anita Chisholm was an American politician who, in 1968, became the first Black woman to be elected to the United States Congress. Today, we delve into Shirley Chisholm's life, accomplishments, and struggles in politics, from her upbringing in Barbados and Brooklyn to DC and a congressional seat.
Guess what. Being a woman in politics wasn't easy. And Shirley didn't pretend that she wasn't working with a "double handicap" as a Black woman. But hard headed Shirley never let the bastards get her down and worked her way to a spot of great respect and into making actual change for the American people.
Despite facing death threats and criticism, Chisholm stayed determined, earning her an appropriate nickname, "Fighting Shirley." We make a couple of comparisons to Victoria Woodhull in this episode, so make sure to revisit those episodes. Much like Vicky, Shirley's run for the white house was a huge first. And we just love her so much.

1:37 Early life and education
13:23 She enters a political career
25:54 Shirley faces discrimination as a black woman in college
32:05 Shirley's trailblazing presidential campaign

As we continue our summer break, today we're playing a really fun episode from Patreon 2022.
Constance of Castile was a disputed Spanish princess who entered into a marriage with a man who was very much in love with someone else. Deep in our Katherine Swynford research, we found Constance intriguing and elusive, so we decided to dive in.
What we found was a really interesting parallel to the events of her life and those of her husband's love life with his long-time mistress/ mother of a bunch of his Beaufort kids.
And as always, when we dive into Spanish royalty this stuff is always dramatic. So, in this episode you get lots of craziness, some real nerdy observations and your new favorite catchphrase (ding dong ditch).
And if you haven't listened to our Katherine Swynford episode, it might be fun to do so before or after this one. You can find that here: https://pod.fo/e/109635

Finally ending on a discussion about the successful partnership of Taurus and Pisces signs Isabella and Ferdinand. The conversation wraps up with a lighthearted Zodiac Roundup.

If you Google the name Lavinia Fisher, you see stories about America's first female serial killer. But does she actually deserve the honor? Tune into an episode from the Patreon vault, all the way back from summer 2021. We talk old south, hangings, conspiracies and ghosts.
Lavinia was known for her charm and good looks, which she allegedly used to lure men into her inn and then drug them with a potent mixture of alcohol and opium. Once the victims were unconscious, Lavinia and her husband would rob them of their belongings and then kill them...or did they?
They were eventually caught and Lavinia was tried and convicted of murder. She was hanged in 1820 and is believed to be the first woman in the United States to be executed for a capital crime.

And we're back to finish up the story of the nearly legendary Rani of Jhansi, aka Rani Lakshmibai. (You can listen to part 1 here)
When we last left her, she was a new widow in an uncertain time while the rebellion was spreading through India as the 1857 Indian rebellion grew more widespread. But our girl did not start out a revolutionary. In fact, if things had gone just slightly differently she would have never rebelled at all.
This episode delves into the debates around whether the Rani of Jhansi genuinely cooperated with the British or was playing a long game, waiting for them to let their guard down. There are few personal records of her thoughts and feelings, leaving much speculation around her intentions and actions.
She led her army into battle and fought fiercely, earning the respect of both her allies and enemies. Despite facing numerous challenges, she never wavered in her commitment to her people and her country. Despite being a controversial and complex historical figure, the Rani of Jhansi is remembered for her bravery and contribution to Indian history. Today, she is remembered as a symbol of resistance and female empowerment in Indian history. What a wonderful way to finish up our season 6.

Have you ever heard of Rani of Jhansi? She's sometimes referred to as India's Joan of Arc, so you know we're discussing a Warrior Queen
Rani of Jhansi, also known as Rani Lakshmibai, was one of the most prominent figures in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. But today, we're learning about how she got there. She was born in 1828 in Varanasi, India (probably?). Manu (as her family called her) was a Scorpio and it shows. Hard headed to the core with an independent streak, the future Rani of Jhansi did not have a conventional childhood.
Manu was married at a young age to the Maharaja (king) of Jhansi and from there her story gets pretty wild. Rani of Jhansi was a remarkable figure in Indian history, who fought against the British Empire and became an icon of resistance and freedom. Her story is a testament to the power of courage, determination, and leadership in the face of adversity. So, join us as we learn what lead to her life taking this crazy turn.

Today, we are here to give a little Respect to a queen we think you’re really going to love. No, not our usual kind of queen, but just as fascinating. She may not have had a coronation, but she is regal through and through. Of course, we’re talking about the one and only Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
Her story is one of ups and downs and lots… and LOTS of Katy and Nathan singing off-key (since we are far too poor to afford the rights to the actual music) (guys, we’re really sorry). And what’s a good sing-along without a fancy cocktail? Nathan serves up some diva realness with a drink called The Soul Kiss Cocktail.

Selena Quintanilla, Queen of Tejano music, makes our little Texan hearts sing. Born in Lake Jackson, Texas in the early 1970's, little Selena became the singer of her family's band at just six years old. And once she started singing, she never stopped.

In 2018 we first covered Alexandra Feodorovna, the last tsarina of Russia. But, after our Mathilde Kschessinska episode, we thought it might be interesting to revisit her. So, you don't need to go digging back through the back catalog.
Alex was born into German royalty. She was very loved as the favorite granddaughter of the HBIC, Queen Victoria (maybe you heard of her). In fact, Queen Victoria wanted Alex to be the next queen of England and tried to play matchmaker and marry baby Alex to her cousin, the Prince of Wales. However, this was never going to happen. Alex only had eyes for her other cousin (lots of kissin' cousins in this episode), the tsarevich of Russia, Nicholas Romanov.
As the tsarina, our girl was not popular. And she really didn't do herself any favors. Still, we find her a sympathetic figure all the same. Rasputin and all.

Mathilde Kschessinska was an iconic prima ballerina of the Russian Imperial Ballet.
She was also the scandal of St. Petersburg. Let's spill the tea.
Born into a connected dance family, Little K first met the tsarevich (the future Nicholas II of Russia) when she was 18 and oh boy she was smitten kitten. The relationship ended before she would have liked when he married the future empress, Alexandra Feodrovna. But don't feel too bad for her. Mathilde wasn't lonely long.
In her life she saw Russia go through a tumultuous time and witnessed first hand the craziness that was the Russian Revolution in 1917. She was one of the lucky ones that got out, but what was life like after leaving her home?

Welcome back, as we wrap up the life of the one and only, Josephine Baker.
Josey was one of the biggest stars in the world, but when she saw injustice during the lead-up to World War II, she knew she couldn't sit by and do nothing. So, she became a spy. Josephine Baker, the spy. We like the sound of that! After World War II, Josephine Baker continued to perform and speak out against injustice. She was an important figure in the civil rights movement of the United States, In 1963, she was one of the few women to speak at the March on Washington. Personally invited by Marting Luther King Jr.
Josey's personal life also took just as many dramatic twists and turns. While she suffered personal tragedy, she also became the mother to twelve children. Josephine would later go on to be one of only six women interred in the Pantheon. Kind of a big deal.
We hope you enjoyed this episode about the later life of Josephine Baker. Here are some great sources for continued reading!

In this Patreon episode from Autumn 2021, Katy takes on Thomas Howard. This F-ing guy! Ugh, he's the worst.
Thomas Howard was born into a noble English family during the tumultuous Wars of the Roses. The young Howard was lucky to come out on the other end of the wars with his life. From there he built and built his career up to the highest point he could hope for.
Too bad on the way to such heights he abused and imprisoned a wife, put three nieces in the bed of the king which ended in two of them losing their lives (aka: Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard), threw a son and daughter under the bus and was just a massive snob in every way, shape and form.
In other words. This guy is the worst.

Christina of Sweden, aka the Girl King, is one of the most famous monarchs of Sweden. Her memory lives in both fame and infamy. She was... complicated.
Is it a boy or a girl? Initially, Christina was mistaken for a male at birth, causing her Mom (Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg) to take some really drastic steps to communicate her frustration with her. But it wasn't all trauma. Dad (King Gustavus II Adolphus), on the other hand, loved and adored her and eventually had her educated and trained as a male heir would be, setting Christina up for success as the Queen of Sweden.
Christina of Sweden was a progressive woman of the people who fought for equality among her subjects, as best one could in the 1600s. She ended the 30-Year War with Poland that killed her father while having a romantic relationship with her female Bedfellow, a relationship still debated to this day.
Pairs best with the Christina of Sweden Cocktail (we invented this one ourselves, and we love it! [00:02:00] for the recipe).
Queen Christina’s story includes:
Must listen Moments:
[00:23:00] He finally was like, look, you have a daughter. Apparently, what he said is, she's tricked us all. She's gonna be really clever. I love this about him. I love that. That is so cool. That is so refreshing that he was just like, this, this is my daughter.
[00:24:00] Yeah. Her mother, again, like her mother just resents her and it's just this bad look, so her mother may have. Tried to kill her once or twice.
[00:55:30] I think they were definitely lovers. That's a Queen's podcast official statement - that we think they were lovers. A lot of people have speculation one way or the other, letters between the two survive, that feel like love letters.

Messy Messalina has not gone down in history with the tidiest reputation. In fact, we may even say her reputation is kind of messy.
Empress Messalina was the wife of Roman Emperor Claudius, who ruled from AD 41 to 54. She is infamous for her promiscuity and extravagance. But, was she really all that extra? Or did she just do what every single Roman man was doing? Messalina was born in AD 17 to a wealthy family and became a powerful influence on the Roman court during her brief reign. She was known for her love of luxury and excess, and was said to have engaged in extravagant parties and sexual liaisons with multiple partners.
Messalina aka Messy is the Roman empress with the nastiest reputation. But does she deserve it? TL;DR: we actually don't know, but probably not. But we can't wait to hear what you think. If you enjoyed this episode and want more trashy ancient Roman marriages, check out our Agrippina the Younger series. Here's part 1.

Born into bougie-ness via one of the oldest noble families in France, Francois-Athenais de Rochechouart de Mortemart (say that three times fast) felt right at home at court. Known for having a great sense of humor and voluptuous curves to boot, it’s no surprise she caught the eye of one of the biggest f-boys in history.
But Franny didn’t always have her eyes set on Louis XIV and was actually married with a kid before she stole the role of his official mistress. Learn what led her to Louis’ bed, besides the not-so-secret entrance from the apartment he gave her, and mix up a French Martini to help set the scene. Combine an ounce and a half of raspberry vodka, half an ounce of Shaul, two ounces of cranberry juice, and then half an ounce of blackberry liqueur. A votre sante!

Must-listen moments:
[00:06:21] Her dad was a Duke and her mom was a lady in waiting to the current Queen Anne of Austria, so our girl knew life at court from a pretty young age.
[00:32:28] His brother-in-law Charles the Second of England…they both had a shitload of mistresses and Louis the 14th was called the Sun King during his reign, so he was fairly popular. And the same with Charles II, he brought Christmas back to England, so he was popular.
[00:54:06] It was over the top of the palace…this was a huge passion project for Louis and subsequently a passion project for Madame de Montespan. They both wanted to expand Versailles and she actually even designed one of the fountains up there.

Betty Marion White, born January 17th, 1922, was a spot-on Capricorn, talented producer, writer, actor, mentor, and activist, with a “live with it” attitude fit for nothing short of royalty.
Although born during the Great Depression, she pursued the career of her dreams, working well into her late 80’s without skipping a beat. Betty lived to be 99 years old, peacefully passing away on December 31, 2021, just 18 days shy of her 100th birthday.
In Betty’s honor, we’re enjoying a dirty martini with two and a half ounces of vodka, a half an ounce of dry vermouth, half an ounce of olive juice. We miss her dearly so, please raise your glass with us as we toast to the beautiful, iconic golden girl who will always be in our hearts!

[00:45:06] She definitely ended up on the right side of history there. She ended up being a huge advocate for racial injustice. And Arthur Duncan, who would go on to have a very successful career as a dancer to this day still credits Betty White for his jumping-off point of his career.
[01:28:22] She is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest female career in f***ing entertainment. Eight Emmys, a Grammy, three SAGS, a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She's in the television Hall of Fame.

If Henry VIII was on Tinder, would Anne of Cleves swipe right? Would anyone, given his affinity for getting rid of his wives? Probably not. However, since Anne didn't call the shots, she was shipped off to wed the the recently widowed King and be crowned yet another Queen of England.
Join us as we sip on a lightly stirred “Beloved Sister,” a yummy mix of lemon vodka, cranberry juice, orange juice, and ginger beer, while uncovering the sheltered life of King Henry VIII’s lesser-known wife, Anne of Cleves.
Anne had a decent relationship with her parents and sis Amalia, but her bro basically threw her to the big bad wolf just to get back at the King of France. We also hash through the training she endured in preparation for meeting her future husband, only for it to be spoiled by his weird enjoyment of tricking his wives. What a jerk. At least the drink tastes good!
In this episode, you’ll also hear:
Must-listen moments:
[00:07:00] Not a lot is known about her mother, but we do know that her mother, Maria, sat in what we'd consider Congress or Parliament or something like that. She actually signed bills and was not passive.
[00:37:00] He just becomes very hyper-focused on making sure that he has all the best everything for her when she arrives, which is kind of sweet in his weird little way.
[00:52:00] Anne immediately realized her mistake, and somebody was like, oh, by the way, that is the king. And she apologized and bowed and…for weeks she was practicing how their first meeting would go and how she would painstakingly practice how she would bow and exactly what she would say and in English…and to have it just completely thrown out the window.

We are so excited to venture to the East to dive into Korean politics and just the bananas royal family that Empress Myeongseong married into. Queen Min really won our hearts over with her love of books, learning, and tried to move her people into the forward-thinking future. The downside? She had a father-in-law from hell!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Find out what it means to Re. Welcome back to season 5! We are SO excited to show some respect to the one and only Queen of Soul... Aretha Franklin!
Aretha Franklin was one of the most iconic singers ever. But her life wasn't without drama.
Raised in a very busy and religious household, Aretha first got noticed singing gospel, but it wasn't until she made her move to pop in the 1960's that she really started to turn heads. And in a serious way! Franklin rose to fame with her iconic rendition of "Respect" (which, fun fact: is actually a cover) and then went on to have a decades-long career as one of the most renowned vocalists of all time.
Throughout her career, she recorded over 40 albums and won 18 Grammys.
We paired our lady of soul with a Soul Kiss cocktail that we think you're going to love.

Irene of Athens was the Byzantine empress who ruled from 797 to 802 AD. And guys, she was brutal. She was born in Athens, Greece and married Emperor Leo IV at a young age. That marriage wasn't great. The two had opposing religious views in a time and place where that wasn't something most relationships really ever got past.
After his death, she became regent for their son, Constantine VI. However, you could say that she was never exactly going to be winning any Mother of the Year awards. However, she is remembered as a fierce lady. Her legacy as a powerful female leader continues to inspire today. Grab a cocktail and tune in to learn more!

Catherine the great has gone down in history as one of the most impressive female leaders of all time. But she didn't start out that way!
Despite being born to a noble, bitter mom in doesn’t-exist-anymore Prussia (what we call Germany and Poland today), Catherine became an even-keeled, sociable woman fit for royalty, thanks to her love of learning and charismatic personality.
Since Catherine eventually winds up in Russia, our drink of choice for this episode is the classic Moscow Mule, which is our snarky way of saying neigh to the horse-effing rumors and proclaiming her love of stallions as strictly nonsexual.
In this episode, we learn that Catherine’s birth name was actually Sophie, and we discuss why her pain-in-the-ass mom treated her like garbage instead of the fantastic empress she would become. We dive into her betrothal process and how she met her future hubby as an alcoholic 11-year-old child yet still agreed to marry him years later despite hella red flags.
We follow her dangerous journey east and how her wise decision to embrace the culture, language, and religion of Mother Russia won over the Empress and people, but not so much her highly immature husband, who went from threatening to beat her to not touching her in bed for nine years. More on their toxic pairing in Part 2!
Believe us when we say you’ll want a Moscow Mule or three for this one, so throw together two ounces of vodka, half an ounce of lime juice, and then six ounces of ginger beer (or sub-club soda if you wish).
In this episode, you’ll also hear:
Must-listen moments:
[00:39:00] King Frederick decides that Catherine would be a great wife for the future Czar. So Prussia and Russia, at this point in time, were on the brink of war. So securing the next czarina of Russia to be a Russian princess was a huge diplomatic move.
[00:49:00] You needed to know your etiquette, and you needed to know the dances. You have to be dressed for the right occasion. It could be a little overwhelming for even the most seasoned socialite…it didn't stress Catherine out. If she was stressed out, she never showed it. It seemed like she'd been trained for this her whole life.
[01:10:00] They were dancing, having a pleasant enough dance, and he's just like, you know what I read in the law books recently? Once you're my wife, I can beat you, and so long as I don't kill you, I can beat you all I want. And it’s absolutely factual.

Elizabeth of York brings the drama on her road to becoming Queen of England. She married Henry Tudor, AKA Henry VII, after the War of the Roses, but did they actually love each other?
Grab a glass of bubbly as we dive into what could easily be a plot line in Game of Thrones, which is Elizabeth of York’s life. You might want to get comfy in preparation for this one because a lot of Elizabeth’s family gets #NedStarked.
Must listen Moments:
[00:38:00] (Louis the 11th)... was always starting sh**, always like making alliances with somebody's enemy. You know what I mean? Yeah. And so, unsurprisingly, it turns out he had other marriage alliances going on for his son. Once Edward (IV) caught wind of it, he was just like, we don't need him. We'll find you someone better. And like cut ties.
[00:42:00] Uncle Dick and the new young King have Elizabeth Woodville's brother arrested and executed. He also has Lizzie's older half-brother executed.
[01:11:00] Then (King Richard III) was stabbed, and his crown rolls off and it, like, basically rolls into a bush, right By Henry Tudor (King Henry VII), who then just puts it on. Like, nope, this is how this works. It's mine now, b****. And then Henry becomes the last king of England to become king by conquest.

Today we will be discussing the life and legacy of Queen Lili'uokalani of Hawaii. Born on September 2, 1838, Lili'uokalani was the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. She was the first queen to write her own music and composed the most famous Hawaiian song, Aloha Oe.
After her brother, King Kalakaua, passed away in 1891, Lili'uokalani assumed the throne and sought to restore power to the Hawaiian monarchy. She was successful in introducing a new constitution, but her efforts were thwarted by the U.S. government which sought to overthrow her and annex Hawaii as a Territory. Queen Lili’uokalani was then deposed and arrested in 1895. She was pardoned in 1896 and spent the rest of her life advocating for Hawaiian independence.
Queen Lili'uokalani was a powerful symbol of Hawaiian sovereignty, and her legacy still lives on in the music, culture and politics of Hawaii today. Thank you for tuning in, and we hope you’ve enjoyed learning about Queen Lili'uokalani.

Victoria Woodhull would eventually go on to be the first woman to run for president in the United States, but how did she get started? Would you believe if we told you that by the time she ran for president she was already a retired child psychic? Today we discuss the early years of this trailblazer and sip on a nice rum cocktail called the President.

You’d think by having parents known as the power couple of Europe, dubbed the “Catholic Monarchs” by the Pope himself, that life would be a bit easier for our girl, Juana of Castile. Despite a surprisingly decent upbringing and a powerful mom who had the funds to bankroll Christopher Columbus’ voyage to America, Juana’s seemingly good fortune takes a turn not too long after her marriage to Philip the Handsome, Duke of Burgundy.
Although Juana and Philip’s attraction is on fire from day one, as soon as Juana gets knocked up he starts up with his mistresses. Our opinionated Scorpio rightfully doth protest and her tantrums give her a nickname we shall not repeat. Instead, we’ve opted for a Ricky Martin-inspired, cucumber-infused cocktail, La Vida Loca.
Make your own by mixing 1.5 ounces of Capelle Pisco, 0.5 ounces of Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, three-quarters of an ounce of cucumber shrub (or just blend some cucumber and stevia), three-quarters of an ounce of lime juice and then a quarter of an ounce of simple syrup. To Juana!
In this episode, you’ll also hear:
Must-listen moments:
[00:24:24] It was huge, huge, huge, huge. And Juana’s like, okay, so one, I get to break away from my overbearing mother that I might not necessarily have the best relationship with. Bonus, two, I get to marry this f***ing hottie and kind of have my own life.
[00:51:05] When it was the first kid and it just happened to be a daughter, the fathers usually were good sports about it. Philip was not, he didn't even pretend. He literally tells her you can pay for the upbringing of the daughters, I’ll pay when it’s a boy.
[01:03:30] They don’t understand postpartum depression. They don't understand, um, hormone imbalance and stuff like that. But, um, so you just have to think about like, Yeah, of course. She is experiencing a lot of high highs and lows emotionally. Half of her family has just died.

Hortense Mancini's life was a wild ride. Born into an incredibly affluent family, she was well connected from the day she was born. This Italian beauty was raised at the French court, along with her beautiful sisters. You could even compare them to another group of beautiful, scandalous sisters from today. Oh, yeah. The Mancini sisters are 100% the original Kardashians.
As a young woman, Hortense (the IT girl of Paris) was married to an absolute dud of a man and this beautiful socialite was taken away from the spotlight.
But don't worry. You can't keep Hortense hidden away from the better things in life for too long.

Divorced, beheaded, died. Queen Jane Seymour has entered the Tudor chat. Today we cover the third (and favorite?) wife of Henry VIII of England. Plain Jane is often overlooked and assumed to be a less interesting woman that Henry's other queens. (I mean, really tho. Who looks all that interesting when compared to Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn?)
Was she as boring as everyone thinks or just like, really smart? How do you think she felt when her predecessor lost her head? Did she really feel as loved as Henry claimed he loved her after she was gone?

Marie Laveau was the famous New Orleans Voodoo queen, but she's probably not anything like you think! The first person in her family to be born free, she lived in the highly integrated (but still pretty racist) New Orleans society. As a young mother, Marie started doing hair to make a living and, just like in American Horror Story Coven (the only thing that show got right about our girl), she earned a reputation from there as a mystic.
But it's also possible that she was just good at listening as the rich, white women gossiped.
Join us as we drink a rum based cocktail (called... you guessed it! The voodoo queen) and get to know this mystical sometimes mythical woman!

Mary Queen of Scots’ reign began when she was only days old, but what you’d assume to be a life of luxury unfolded into a wild drama as she later found herself (briefly) Queen of France and then being groomed to take the disputed English throne, creating a compelling central conflict between Scotland and England.
Pour a Mary Queen of Scots cocktail or any scotch drink as we dive into the crazy life of one of the tallest and most beautiful Queens in history.
While some of the drama was ignited when Mary of Guise (her mom) roasted King Henry 8th in her rejection of his marriage proposal and ghosted his betrothal proposal to her daughter, there’s so much more to Mary Queen of Scots life -
Must-listen moments:
[00:16:00] This B (King Henry VIII) is killing people left and right. She burned him for that. So she knows he's f-ing psycho, and she's like, am I really gonna...? I didn't wanna marry him…Would I want my daughter to marry him or his children?
[00:33:00] A recurring theme in Mary's life is that she makes terrible decisions… but all her advisors were French.
[00:35:00] There were quotes from the people in Paris that said this is the most beautiful queen in Europe. Yeah. Ever. And then obviously Elizabeth the First catches wind of that and is like, b***..!

Nell Gwyn was an English actress, courtesan, and mistress of Charles II of England (aka: ther merry monarch). She was born in 1650 in London, and was one of the first actresses to appear on the English stage. She had a natural charm and beauty that made her popular with the crowds. Though her background was humble, she went on to become one of the most famous women of the day.
Nell's rise to fame began in 1665. She became an overnight sensation on the stage and soon began appearing in many other plays. Her wit, charm, and beauty made her a favorite of the King, and she became his mistress in 1668. They had two sons, Charles and James.
Nell Gwyn's life was full of adventure and scandal. She was a fiercely independent woman who fought for her rights and didn't let anyone take advantage of her. Her story has been told in a number of plays and films, and she remains an inspiration to many women today.

You’ve heard of “sister from another mister,” but what about a sisters with the same mister?
We’re raising our Homewrecker cocktails high (1 part Strawberry Vodka, 1 part Peach Schnapps, and some orange juice) to Queen Anne Boleyn as we dissect how on Earth she was mislabeled as such, even though her sister Mary’s affairs with King Francis and others (she was King Henry VIII’s mistress for a bit too!) earned her title of “the most infamous whore.”
Just so the portrait is complete, we begin during the early life of Queen Anne Boleyn and skim through her education, her family, and the rumors about her appearance.
For over 6 years, King Henry VIII stalked her, incessantly writing love letters courting Anne to become his mistress. She refused until, finally, his long-drawn-out annulment with Queen Catherine of Aragon was resolved, and the opportunity presented itself for Anne’s marriage-or-nothing ultimatum to be satisfied.
Gross things royals did to maintain power and bloodlines for 1000: King Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was the widow of Henry VIII's brother, Arthur.
In this episode, you’ll also hear:
Must-listen moments:
[00:06:28] Anne's early education was the time in history when girls actually got a fairly good education. It was just fashionable at this time to educate your daughters well…Mary and Anne Boleyn were educated at home by her mother at the beginning of her life.
[00:36:39]: She may not have been this great beauty for the time. But one of her biographers wrote that she was a remarkable, intelligent, quick-witted, full young noblewoman. She first drew people into conversation with her and then amused and entertained them. In short, her energy and vitality made her the center of attention at any social gathering.
[00:53:02] Henry had never flaunted a mistress like this before…he had had Bessie Blount before and then Mary Bolen, and they had kids together and stuff. He was always respectful to Catherine in this, but with Anne, it was different…he paraded her around.

It's our Halloween episode. Elizabeth Bathory: The Blood Countess! But was she? Nathan and Katy pair a vampire-inspired drink as we gab about this supposed infamous serial killers.
Was Bathory really that bad? Short answer? Probably no, but maybe. You hear a lot about how this dangerous woman bathed in the blood of virgins (which... probably isn't actually even possible), but what you don't hear about is how a lot of really powerful men owed her money.
Like. A lot of money.
So, was she so evil that she needed to be locked away for the safety of all the young girls in the country? Or was it just super easy to lock up a rich woman and never have to pay her back? You let us know what you think.

Have you ever heard the phrase, "let them eat cake"? If so, you probably attribute the phrase to the last queen of France. The infamous Marie Antoinette.
Let's get this out of the way right now. She didn't say that. The phrase actually originated from a German folk tale that predates her birth. Are we saying that she was the perfect queen though? No. Marie was not raised to rule. Brought at the Austrian court of her impressive mother, Maria Theresa, Marie should not have lacked for education. Yet, little Marie Antonia was not inclined to reading. Anyway, she was never meant to be queen of France.
But, as fate would have it, the unprepared teenage Marie finds herself thrown into the French court and the political intrigue at Versaille.
Marie's tale is truly heartbreaking and we wish we had better news. Either way, she's definitely made an impression since we're still talking about her to this day.

You may be tough. But are you Caterina Sforza tough? (Probably not)
Caterina Sforza was an Italian noblewoman, political leader, and military leader who lived during the Renaissance. She was born in 1463 in Forlì and was the daughter of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the Duke of Milan, and Lucrezia Landriani. She was known for her intelligence, strength and courage, and was a powerful leader in her own right.
At the age of sixteen, Caterina was married off to Girolamo Riario, the nephew of Pope Sixtus IV, and became the Lady of Imola and Forlì. After Girolamo's assassination, Caterina was forced to take up arms to defend her lands and fought against the French and their allies. She was well-known for her bravery and skill in warfare and even managed to capture the Castle of Ravaldino.
Caterina was also known for her intelligence and cunning; she was a master negotiator and diplomat, and was able to influence many political events throughout her life. She was even said to have poisoned her enemies on occasion!
Caterina Sforza was an impressive figure in the Renaissance and a great example of a strong, intelligent woman who made her mark on history. She was a leader in her own right and an inspiration to many.

Sure, we are very accustomed to Queens named Elizabeth in England these days, but who was the original Elizabeth? Well, that would be Elizabeth Woodville, of course. Aka, Liza with a W!
Elizabeth Woodville's marriage to the young and handsome king Edward IV was scandalous. Was it witchcraft? No. She was just super hot and lovely, so he wanted to marry her despite her being a widow and a commoner. (Even though her mother had literally been a duchess, but whatever) . In this episode we go over:
All while drinking malmsey wine (which Liza may or may not have had her brother-in-law drowned in).

Madame de Pompadour, long time mistress and fried of king Louis XV of France, once said "Champagne is the only wine that leaves a woman more beautiful after drinking it". So today, we're popping the bubbly and getting to know Jean Fish aka Madame de Pompadour.
Born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson to an upper middle class family, little Jeanny was remarkable from a young age. Of course it wasn't long until she caught the eye of the king.
She was the official mistress of King Louis XV and a highly influential figure in the French court. She was a patron of the arts and sciences, a talented singer and musician, and a great conversationalist. We get it, Jean. You're perfect.
Her influence extended beyond the court and she was a major patron of the arts and sciences, sponsoring many of the famous French Enlightenment philosophers and scientists. She was also a great lover of books and was a major collector of rare books and manuscripts. Madame de Pompadour's legacy lives on to this day, with her name being synonymous with elegance and style.

This is our second episode on Catherine of Aragon, Queen of England. If you missed our first episode, listen to that one first!
Queen, Regent, Mother, Martyr. So many monikers can be applied to this Very Catholic Queen of England who sees herself in this episode come upon a demotion of sorts. While queen, Catherine was not only beloved by her people but was also tough when she needed to be. Just ask the king of Scotland! But, she committed the one cardinal sin of being a queen consort.
She did not have a baby boy who survived infancy.
Come on this journey with us as we dig deep into the second half of the life of Catherine of Aragon. We mix a delicious pomegranate cocktail with this amazing woman & sing 1 too many show tunes.

Divorced, beheaded, died. Divorced, beheaded survived. The wives of Henry VIII, king of England are all famous, but sometimes his first queen, Catherine of Aragon can be overlooked.
She was born in Spain in 1485 and was the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who had unified Spain. She was betrothed to Arthur, Prince of Wales, from a super young age. Sadly, things did not go as planned when Arthur Tudor died after just a few months of marriage. And now the Tudors (namely, Henry VII) just didn't know what to do with their little Spanish princess.
Today we pair a pomegranate-based cocktail with a fascinating princess turned Queen, Catherine of Aragon.
Also, Arthur Tudor. Did they or didn't they!?

On this episode, we drink ale & talk about the OTHER Queen-B. Boudica! The woman scorned who almost took down the Roman army.
The truth is that we may never be 100% sure what part of Boudica's story is legend and which part is fact. But regardless, her story has been an inspiration for thousands ever since the interest in her grew during the Victorian period.
Queen Boudica lived during the time when the Romans occupied the Brittania (aka, modern-day Brittian) and was leader of the Iceni tribe. When Nero's dudes decided they didn't like a woman being in charge of a major clan, they did some pretty messed up stuff to Bouidca and her daughters. She and her people decided they had enough of Rome and nearly drove them out of their lands.
Some even believe that evidence of her scorched earth (literally) tactics remains today in parts of England today. (You can read more about that here). While largely forgotten to history, queen Victoria took a shine to her and she came to be the legend that we know of today.

Catherine de Medici was a powerful figure in 16th century Europe, as the Queen consort of France from 1547 to 1559, and then as the Queen Mother from 1559 until her death in 1589. Her origin story is actually super scary. Starting as a really rich orphan whose life was constantly threatened, she was saved by her friends in high places (ie: The Pope).
Then, after becoming queen of France, she was a great patron of the arts and culture, and helped to shape the cultural landscape of France during her lifetime. She was also an absolute force to be reckoned with who took no shit.
She played a major role in the affairs of France, from her husband's succession to the throne in 1547 to her son's accession in 1589. From her marriage to King Henry II to her death, Catherine de Medici was a crucial figure in the history of Renaissance Europe, and her influence is still felt today.

Lucrezia Borgia has been given a really unfair reputation in history. Poisoner, brother "lover", and all around scandalous. Sorry to tell you, most of these are likely very untrue.
Born to an Italian cardinal, Rodrigo Borgia, her life began as a scandal. Famously, cardinals aren't supposed to have families. But this one sure did. Lucrezia was very much loved by her father who eventually went on to become Pope Alexander VI aka Pope Daddy. Her family was a scandal at every turn, but was Lucrezia an active participant in these scandals, an innocent bystander or a pawn in the games of the powerful men in her family?
Due to the (most certainly false) story of Lucrezia being an infamous poisoner, we're pairing this episode with a cocktail simply called Poison, which is made with vodka, orange liqueur, lemon, and soda water. So, drink up queens.

It's the second episode of Queens Podcast, y'all! And today we're pairing a classic glass of red wine with the one and only Cleopatra!
Cleopatra is one of the most iconic figures in history. She was the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, ruling around 51 to 30 B.C.E. During her reign, she worked to bring Egypt back to its former glory and restore its economy. She was also the lover of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. And while her love affairs seem to be what people want to talk about, she was so much more than her relationships.
Cleopatra was known for her intelligence, cunning, and ambition. She was able to speak multiple languages and was well-educated. She was also a great negotiator, successfully negotiating favorable terms for Egypt with the major force of the time, Rome.
The legacy of Cleopatra is one of intelligence, bravery, and power. Although she died at the age of 39, she left a lasting impression on history. Her story has been told in books, films, and plays, and her name is still widely known today.

Could you imagine being the Queen of England for a week and 2 days? Would it be worth losing your head over? Probably not, but unfortunately, Lady Jane Grey wasn’t given much choice, thanks to the folks she called family.
Perhaps doomed from the start because of her overly ambitious parents, at least they gave her a decent education before they married her off to Guildford Dudley in a plot for the throne.
After her cousin Edward dies, Jane is whisked away to the Tower of London to be made queen, only to be quickly condemned and sentenced to death when Mary Tudor steps in to reclaim the crown. Talk about drama! Listen in and make yourself a Greyhound, a tart yet simple combo of vodka and grapefruit juice, as we recall the not-so-happy life of the “Nine Days Queen,” Lady Jane Grey.
