Redeemer Downtown began meeting in 2012—but we are part of a network that began in 1989, when the first Redeemer church opened its doors with a vision to love the city and welcome those with questions about faith. This vision continues to drive our future as a community eager to serve our city as recipients of God’s grace.

If the average American spends a third of their lives working, how much time does the average New Yorker spend working? Many of us in the city give so much of ourselves to our work hoping that it will give us a sense of meaning and fulfillment in life. But we often find that our jobs fall short of giving us what we ultimately desire. What is it that we're missing? What's the key to finding meaning, fulfillment and purpose in our work?
The sixth sermon in the sermon series, "Formed", was preached by Rev. Pete Nicholas.
We live in an age where our awareness of the self and identity formation is front of mind: Identity politics is huge, slogans like, 'You do you' and, 'Be true to yourself' abound. But are our identity projects helping us to flourish or hindering us? By thinking about the need to have a secure and liberating identity, we'll reflect on our culture's approach to identity, including gender and sexual identities and explore how the Good News of Jesus Christ can uniquely give us the type of identity we long for. Join us and invite your friends to our Guest Sunday next Sunday, February 11 at both the 10am and 5pm services.

The desire for greater racial justice is widely articulated, but there is great division over what racial justice actually looks like and perhaps even more confusion over how it can be achieved. In this talk, Rev. Pete Nicholas explores these vital themes and considers how the gospel of Jesus Christ connects with them.
George Frederic Watts depicts hope as a melancholy, blind woman perched on a dark world, listening intently to the last remaining string of 'hope' on her lyre. In our Guest Sunday, through an interview, talk, music, and a live Q&A, we explored whether this accurately portrays hope or whether the Christian tradition gives us something more.

On Friday, May 19th, Dr. Timothy Keller passed away. Tim Keller was the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City and stepped down in July 2017. Providentially, one of his favorite verses was Luke 10:20. In this sermon, Rev. Pete Nicholas, Senior Pastor of Redeemer Downtown, speaks about what it means to have our identity in Jesus while remembering the life and ministry of Tim Keller.

Paul makes an amazing claim in Colossians 1:6 that ‘the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world’ (NIV). The fruitfulness that Paul is talking about is missional fruitfulness, as the Christians in Colossae came to faith in Christ Jesus. It is also pastoral fruitfulness, ‘bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God' (v10).
But what is this gospel that is so central, powerful, and fruitful? Paul writes, ‘He [Jesus Christ] is the one we proclaim’. In other words, the gospel is not an abstract set of doctrines (though it is doctrinal), nor is it merely a religious experience (though it is experiential). At its core, it is personal; it is about the person and work of Jesus Christ. To bear fruit, we need to know him and proclaim him.
This is what Colossians is about. Christ is all we need to be fruitful. He is the way into the Christian life, and he is the way on. Nothing more, nothing less; Christ is all we need.
