On the 7th of October 1998, 21-year old Matthew Shepard was found tied to a prairie fence at the end of a remote dirt track in Laramie, Wyoming. The young gay man had been pistol-whipped in the head over 20 times, and his brain stem had been crushed. He died 6 days later in hospital.
This case went on to become arguably the most infamous gay hate crime in modern history, and for many Matthew became a martyr.
