It's really nice when you have people who will do your dirty work and implement the policies you come up with that are super unpopular, so they get the blame and you're free. Right? Isn't that a cool deal to have? Only problem is when you're those guys doing the work, and your protector dies, and the next guy comes in and wants to show how he'll change everything... oops.

trigger warning: Smoking and Tobacco use.
Soon after Columbus came back from his voyage to the West Indies, a sailor in Spain lit a pipe. And thus began tobacco's storied history in Europe. Within 150 years schoolboys at Eton were beaten if they didn't have their morning tobacco. How did one weed become such a huge part of society? Let's discuss.

Remember in a previous episode about Tudor bathrooms we talked about the medieval spa experience where you could have a meal and a bath at the same time in the bath houses all around Southwark? Then Henry VIII closed them all, and baths went out of fashion. But then during Elizabeth's time people begin to travel to spas like Buxton to "take the waters," and bang, the English holiday was born! Plus, foreign policy.

In the 1540's Henry VIII began what economists have called the greatest monetary treason ever committed against citizens. What was this con job? The Great Debasement, when coins went from containing about 92% silver to less than 30%. More money to make war on France! And Ireland! Only not. It backfired. Royally and majestically.

About ten years ago I read One Summer by Bill Bryson, which chronicled the summer of 1927 in America. I absolutely adore Bill Bryson anyway, and this book didn't disappoint. I wanted to do something similar on this show, showcasing one year in Tudor England. Just a spotlight on one eventful year. I chose 1527 because it was 400 years before Bill Bryson's book, and also it was the year that Henry's Great Matter began, so there was a lot to talk about.

It's a day to celebrate love, and romance, and all that mushy stuff. And the 16th century has its share of great love stories (fun fact: the wedding vows that we use today - to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, etc - are from Cranmer's Book of Common Prayer, and were inspired by his own secret marriage). But what about the romances that went sour? They may have started off full of hope, but then it all backfired. In this episode we take a look at a couple of Bad Tudor Romances.

This episode is the first in a mini series on life in Tudor London, and today I give a brief intro to what life was like in the capital during the Tudor period, followed by an exploration of the most obvious landmark in the City - St Paul's Cathedral. But it's not the St Paul's we know - it was a gothic church, that was started 400 years before our Tudor friends lived there. The other thing that is important about life around St Paul's was the publishing and bookselling businesses that sprang up around the churchyard. It became a hub of books and pamphlets, and was the Elizabethan equivalent of Waterstones or Barnes and Noble.

In Episode 125 we look at the experience of poverty in Tudor England, as well as the Tudor Poor Laws, leading up to the 1601 Elizabethan Poor Act. Something radical happened with the Dissolution of the Monasteries - care for the poor was suddenly shifted from being something that the church handled through the monasteries, to being something that fell on the government's shoulders. The debate about who should care for the poor has been with us since then.

This week, grab a mug of mead, turn up the Tallis, and let's get in the mood to talk about... the history of Valentine's Day! And also, how our Tudor friends would have celebrated. Because if you're going to celebrate the day a saint was killed by Romans, why not add some Tudor history to your candy love hearts?

If you're like me, you may have had a rather questionable opinion of Charles Brandon. I'll admit it, he hasn't ranked high in my estimation. But historical fiction author Tony Riches - whose work I love - has just written a new book on Charles Brandon, and so we chatted about this Tudor Knight. And I have broadened my opinion of Charles Brandon.

How was the Lost Colony of Roanoke related to the Spanish Armada? What about those First Americans who made nice with the colonists, and even went back to London? This episode deals with early American exploration, and the Lost Colony of Roanoke, which was settled (and disappeared) 20 years before Jamestown. It was the equivalent of the Elizabethan Apollo Program.

Arthur Tudor was a Tudor prince who we often think of just in terms of his death. When we do talk about him in life, it's often about whether he consummated his marriage. But there was more to Arthur than that. And after having read a biography of him, I decided to do a complete episode on the boy whose shadow hung over much of the Tudor dynasty, and who helps give us a better understanding of the early Tudor dynasty.

This week, we look at the Big A. Annulment. There is a narrative that Henry was doing something really outrageous when he wanted to end his marriage to Katherine. When instead, he was actually doing something pretty normal. This week we look at divorce and annulments in Medieval England to show that what Henry was asking for was actually something that was very common, and what made it such a big deal was how much it was fought against, and that he didn't get what he was asking for.

[WORLD CUP SPOLI] In honor of England making it through their first knockout round, here's an episode on Tudor football. One of the deadliest sports in Tudor England, second only to archery, football was not really a sport we would recognize today. But people have been passionate about it since the first recorded match in England in 1170! Here we look at football in the Tudor period (Henry VIII had specially made football boots!).
