After finding a lack of help after his parents’ divorce, Joey decided to begin ministry with “Restored” to offer practical guidance and support for teens and young adults from broken families. Jake, Bob, and Joey discuss the wounds that come from divorce, their personal experiences, and practical advice on how to respond to this woundedness. 

• If there isn’t any transformation in the wounds, then the sins we fall into, as a remedy, make sense. They don’t work, but they make sense. 

• We often don’t want to face these wounds, so we try to outrun them. But we can’t outrun our wounds. We’re made for more than that.

• The Lord understands why you struggle with each particular sin. It doesn’t surprise or scandalize Him. And He loves you where you are. 

• Divorce is a wound of broken love. So the medicine can only work when you reach the wound. Love is what heals. 

• Relationship with God is the primary healing element and agent. Give God your attention, quality time, and trust Him. 

• Consume great content that involves trauma and healing. Seek out coaching - a therapist, spiritual director, or mentor. Have a good community and deep relationships.

• For a healthy marriage - spend time with a couple who has a healthy marriage. 

• The temptation in marriage is to harden your heart and to close yourself off. But instead, we are called to tenderness and vulnerability.

Tim is the author of the incredible book “The Discernment of Spirits” that teaches us how to utilize St. Ignatius’ rules of discernment. He shares the process of discernment while Jake & Bob combine his knowledge with their expertise on healing. The process of healing and discerning God’s will for us work beautifully together.

• Discerning what is from the voice of the Holy Spirit and what is from the voice of the evil one.
• The rules of St. Ignatius are an invitation to hope.
• “The more healing that can happen on both the physical and psychological levels, the harder the enemy’s task becomes.” -Fr. Tim 
• The first step in discernment is to notice any movements, thoughts or stirrings of the heart. Identify whether it is from the good spirit or the bad spirit and then take the appropriate action. If it is from the good spirit, take it in and be guided by it. If it is from the enemy, reject it.
• The discernment process happens repeatedly throughout the healing process. It is continual and helps you know how to move forward.
• Our parents/guardians are the first representatives of God to us. We may often hear God’s voice as our parent’s voices which can either be positive or negative. If we believe lies about ourselves from our parents, we need to work through those so that we don’t hear those lies coming from God’s voice in our hearts. We need to invite Jesus’ to speak His truth in our hearts.
• In times of desolation, never make a change.
• Renouncement prayer is a way to practically renounce lies and accept the opposing truths.

Jake and Bob continue their series on working through hopelessness to find hope. When we feel hopeless, we often avoid God because we feel ashamed, guilty or unloved. In these times we only see God as a judge, pointing out our failings. But God is also our Savior who loves us even in the places we feel unloveable. We can try to find hope through things or people but this will let us down. God is the only one who can provide us with the hope we desire. Our hosts walk us through how to find hope again through an Encounter with the God who loves us.

• Hopelessness closes our hearts to the Encounter with God.
• When the sickness of our lives becomes evident to us, we often only see God as Judge and not as Savior.

• Step 1: Ask the Holy Spirit to show you who you need to forgive.

Forgiveness is not an easy topic. It’s intimately connected to our hurts and areas that need healing. But forgiveness is also misunderstood. When we understand and exercise right judgement then we can offer and receive mercy, which leads to healing. Jake and Bob sit down for an honest conversation with Hilde, a woman who would have once called herself a ‘gay Catholic.’ Hilde’s lifelong attraction to the truth made her feel intensely divided between the Catholic faith she was raised with and a lifestyle of same-sex relationships. • The disposition of our hearts and receptivity to grace
• How self awareness helps us respect the process
• Our interpretation of events matter - do we fear our triggers or see them as God wanting to heal us?
• A complete walk-through of the steps in the healing process, based on the Immanuel Approach (see the practical application)
• We can have pre-verbal memories that are attached to wounds
• Types of barriers: vows, judgements, lack of forgiveness, unconfessed sin
• Renunciation of vows and the announcing of God’s truth/ blessing

Practical Application:

1. Draw your attention to God. Recall a positive memory of connection with God or others and allow it to overflow in an expression of gratitude to Him. This is called the ‘Immanuel Moment.’
2. Now, bring to mind a moment of recent distress or disconnection. What is it that you’re feeling in that moment? What are you ‘believing in the feelings’?  
3. Ask Jesus to show you the root of the distress; don’t try to figure it out yourself.
4. Identify the painful experience and corresponding belief.
5. Ask the Lord to reveal what He desires for you to know. 
6. If you begin to feel ‘stuck’ in the process, there is likely a barrier present. Address the barrier using a corresponding technique such as renunciation.
7. Test the fruit: go back to the original memory and original distress and sense if there is peace. If difficult emotion is still present, go back and repeat the relevant steps.

Today, we welcome Peter Herbeck from Renewal Ministries onto the show. Peter would describe his younger self as a troublemaker and rule breaker, acting out because of an alcoholic father. But, when his father miraculously and voluntarily turned himself in for treatment after his sister called on the family to pray, Peter was introduced to healing: clinically and through Christ. It was a step in the right direction, but his healing journey was far from over. Join our conversation as Peter shares how his understanding of ‘healing the whole person’ shifted in his fifties and how this has impacted his leadership forever.

2. Take the time to ask yourself, “What do I really want or desire?” What is in your heart once you cut past any sin or fear of failure? Journal what comes up. 
3. If you have unresolved trauma in your life, seek support.

This week, Jake and Bob spend time with an old friend, Christopher West. They reminisce about their spiritual history with each other, and Christopher gets real about his own journey of healing from rejection wounds. Christopher is well known as ‘the Theology of the Body guy,’ but after nine years of hiding his own brokenness behind masks in his marriage, he was confronted with the reality that he was living out his brokenness with his wife. Christopher walks us through his testimony of learning to take off the masks to let God love him.

We all bring brokenness into marriage and by God’s grace, we also get to participate in our spouse's healing journey. In part three of the Healing in Marriage series based on Dr. Bob’s book, “Be Devoted,” Jake and Bob discuss how to restore trust in broken areas of a marriage. They give practicals on how to navigate this often difficult journey, and show us how reconciliation is possible for anyone who is willing.

This week kicks off a new series on “Healing in Marriage.” If you’re struggling in marriage, you are not alone. How can you find healing in difficult situations with your spouse? This episode addresses the presence of conflict in marriage, and how to honor your spouse. Jake and Dr. Bob draw on stories from their marriages as well as experience from their practice in professional counseling to shed light on this reality in relationships.

Sexual intimacy is the final area covered in this series on unity in marriage, since this form of unity flows from all the others (Spiritual, Emotional, Companionship, Teamwork). In the episode, Jake and Dr. Bob share how sexual desire and self-gift are made to become integrated in marriage through the Holy Spirit, making a way for healing and deep intimacy. 

Part four of the series on Unity in Marriage explores the joy of companionship and teamwork. Jake and Dr. Bob flesh out what it means to become one of mind and heart, and share personal examples of how they’ve had to tackle self-focus in order to move toward deeper connection through selflessness in their marriages. They also address the question, “How do we honor one another’s strengths and complement in a way that builds teamwork instead of moving in opposite directions?”

Jake & Dr. Bob discuss emotional intimacy in this next episode in their series on unity in marriage. Generally, this type of intimacy is more difficult for men, while it's one of the deepest desires of women. Our hosts share stories of how they have grown in emotional intimacy through their own marriages, and provide practical tips on how to develop deeper emotional intimacy in your own relationship.

This week kicks off a new series on finding unity in marriage. Jake and Bob will share what they’ve learned through their own marriages and their professional work with married couples. In this episode, they discuss how marriage is a union of two broken people, but by inviting in the love of God, growing together in unity is made possible. A couple can grow and heal together during the journey of their marriage. Our hosts set the stage for a great series and share tips that will help a marriage become stronger.

Jake and Bob continue their series on the Healing of the Family and dive into marriage/family wounds. The family is the primary way children learn how to give and receive love, treat other people, & find their identity. As adults, we can look back at our upbringing and see how we were formed in healthy ways and ways that caused us to struggle. Jake and Bob offer suggestions on how to find healing from our family/marriage trauma and how our families can create a loving culture where our children can thrive.

Dr. Bob and Jake discuss the power of a father’s love and his capacity to wound. Fathers plant deep seeds in their children’s hearts with what they said or didn’t say and what they did or didn’t do. The restoration of wounds from our fathers is life-changing.

After recapping how Peter’s pride, shame, and false self have been stripped away, Dr. Bob and Jake discuss the amazing transformation in Peter after his healing encounter with Jesus and being filled with the Holy Spirit. The series concludes with reflections on how each of us can find ourselves in Peter’s story and experience a similar transformation.

After explaining the meaning and power of shame, Dr. Bob and Jake reflect on the restorative encounter between Jesus and Peter on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. We can all resonate with Peter’s experience of denying Jesus and the resulting shame. Our hearts long to be healed and restored. Jesus comes to Peter, not to further shame him, but to heal him.

This week’s episode goes deeper into the life of St. Peter. Through personal stories and experiences, Bob and Jake help us appreciate the value of seeing ourselves as we truly are because in vulnerability, as we carry the cross, our hearts move deeper through the journey of healing. How we respond at these times brings us along the path of either Peter (hope) or Judas (despair).

In the healing process, we can be focused on a dynamic that is important but not as deep or far reaching as what Jesus is addressing. Trusting Jesus and interpreting our journey in trust and goodness is best because we move beyond control.
