Inclusive Environments session took place on day two of RNIB Scotland's Inclusive Design for Sustainability Conference.

While personal smart technologies might offer a solution for independent mobility, the importance of accessible and inclusive infrastructure can’t be underestimated. Whether it’s road, rail, air, or ferry travel, inclusive design is a critical component in creating more equitable journeys. 

Presentations and a panel discussion was facilitated by Robin Spinks, Head of Inclusive Design at RNIB. Joining him on stage were: Heather Hepburn, Head of Accessibility at Skyscanner, Ben Loewenstein, Director of External Affairs at WayMo, Sven Koster, Head of New Business Development and Innovation at Go Media, Demi Wylie, Accessibility Manager at Calmac Ferries.

The Mobility Challenge session took place on day two of RNIB Scotland's Inclusive Design for Sustainability Conference.

Every research study and insight piece confirms the critical role of mobility as an ingredient for independence and confidence. From getting around your local area through to more complex navigation, mobility remains a significant challenge for blind and partially sighted people.  The session will offer a range of innovative solutions which aim to tackle the mobility challenge using a variety of human-centred smart technologies. Our panel will contextualise these technologies and highlight key opportunities and challenges.  

Panel discussion was facilitated by Jim Sanders, Director of Transformation at RNIB, and featured: Neil Barnfather MBE from Goodmaps Inc., Mani Gupta- Managing Partner at Purview, Dr Jean-Marc Feghali, Chief Innovation Officer at WeWalk, and Peter Osbourne – Deputy CEO at Guide Dogs.

The International Innovation session took place on day two of RNIB Scotland's Inclusive Design for Sustainability Conference.

More than ever, we are all living in an international world. From technological innovation through to social media, international collaboration has never had greater importance. With 80% of the people with disabilities living in the Global South, there is an increasing priority that technological innovation and advancement is delivered locally, but in a way which is internationally sensitive. Our panel will discuss the implications of rapidly advancing technology and the opportunity and risk this presents to global equality.

A panel discussion was facilitated by Rasak Adekoya, Technical Advisor (Economic Empowerment) at Sightsavers International. The panellists featured were: Mark Adams, Programme Manager and DMEL Lead at SCIAF, Linda Rogers, Chief Technology Officer at RNIB, Diane Bergeron, Head of International Partnerships at CNIB, Molemisi Kono, Habilitation Specialist from Visual Eyes Afrika-international, and Sabrina Djazoul, Qualified Teacher of Children and Young People with Visual Impairment (QTVI) from Visual Eyes Afrika-international.

On day two, session Unlocking Human Potential: Stories about AI and Wearables took place at RNIB Scotland's Inclusive Design for Sustainability Conference.

It was lead by Agustya Mehta, Director of Reality Labs Hardware Engineering at Meta.

Shaping the Future: Robotics session from day one of RNIB Scotland's Inclusive Design for Sustainability Conference.

In recent years we’ve seen robotics moving towards becoming a mainstream consumer technology. From automatous lawn mowers to wet and dry household vacuums, through to the development of assistive robots such as the robot guide dog, clearly there is huge potential for robotics to bring about a step change when it comes to independence and mobility. Our panel will aim to contextualise recent technological advancements in the sphere of robotics. They will also provide a state-of-the-nation analysis of real-world usability pertaining to inclusion. Finally, we will take a glimpse into the future and aim to predict what might be next. 

This session was facilitated by Dr Wasim Ahmad and Dr Ola Popoola from James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. It featured: Lisa Johnson, Global VP at Starship, as well as Prof. Wei Yao and Mary Ellen Foster from University of Glasgow.

Innovation and Braille session from day one of RNIB Scotland's Inclusive Design for Sustainability Conference.

Fostering innovation to improve independent living of those who are blind or have low vision and the importance of the braille writing system in 2025 and for the future. We will also hear about Campus Louis Braille, a centre of innovation at global level.

Speaking on the topic were Thibaut de Martimprey, Director of Campus Louis Braille and Stephane Gaillard, Director of the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles (INJA).

The advancement of artificial intelligence across many aspects of life seems almost inescapable. In this session we will capture the advancement of generative AI, and the journey through to the advent of multi-modal artificial intelligence. We will consider the impacts for learning, work, mobility and leisure. Our speakers will also aim to orient the session towards tangible life-changing aspects from an inclusion perspective.

Building for everyone: What's new in Google accessibility and why co-design matters session from day one of RNIB Scotland's Inclusive Design for Sustainability Conference.

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the channel Islands for the next of his regular audio described theatre reviews for 2025.

This week Vidar was reviewing the Royal Shakespeare Company’s current production of ‘Hamlet in Stratford-upon-Avon with description by Professional Audio Describers Gethyn Edwards and Carolyn Smith. .

About ‘Hamlet’

Grief can play tricks on the mind, even conjure ghosts. But when Hamlet’s dead father appears to him one night, he signals murder, not madness. Hamlet’s mother has married his uncle, and at a less than decent interval too. As he pulls at the threads of his not-so-happy new family, Hamlet unravels a web of deceit and immorality that leads to the ultimate crisis of conscience.

Following their hugely successful recent collaborations on Cold War and Patriots, multi award-winner Rupert Goold (Dear England, National Theatre; Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice RSC), directs Luke Thallon as Hamlet in this new production of Shakespeare’s family saga.

Hamlet will tour to RSC partner theatres in towns and cities across England throughout spring 2026, including Truro, Bradford, Norwich, Nottingham, Blackpool, Newcastle, York and Canterbury. Full casting for the UK tour is yet to be announced.

The RNIB See Work Differently Work Placement Scheme is a paid placement for blind and partially sighted people who might be looking to get on the first runs of their career ladder or for someone who is returning to work after a break for whatever reason to gain some really important employment skills and experiences to help further their journey into work.

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey recently caught up with Liam McKinney a blind graduate who has just come to the end of his RNIB See Differently Work Placement to find out how the placement had gone for him, what he has gain through being on the placement including some of those all important employment skills and experiences plus how the placement has also help him to build up his confidence too.

The Audio Description Association (ADA) is looking for blind and partially sighted people to join their new VI audio description users discussion group. 

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey was joined by Yusuf Osman from the audio Description Association to give a bit of background to ADA before explaining more about their new VI Group, what it is all about and the benefits for blind and partially sighted people of joining the group and having the opportunity to discuss their experiences of audio description .

The Motability Foundation has awarded grant-funding to the RNIB and Community Rail Network to explore the effectiveness of disability training received by rail staff across the UK and develop innovative new models of raising disability awareness. It will focus on supporting rail staff to improve how they communicate with and assist disabled people, with the ultimate aim of making rail travel more accessible and inclusive for disabled travellers.

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey was joined by Jim Sanders, RNIB Director of Transformation to find out more about how the Motability funding will hopefully make rail travel more accessible and inclusive for us all as blind and partially sighted people.

Sight loss charity RNIIB are launching a new survey and are looking to speak to people who have been recently diagnosed with sight loss, their friends and family, and also professionals working in post-diagnostic support. 

The findings will be used to understand and improve post-diagnostic support for people with sight loss.

Barry Snell spoke to RNIB Head of Strategic Innovation, Caroline Beard, to find out more.

The new ‘Leigh Bowery!’ Exhibition At Tate Modern celebrates the provocative and boundary-pushing career of one of the most fearless and original artists of the 20th century. In his short but extraordinary life, Leigh Bowery (1961-1994) forged a truly unique path. 

For the first time Tate Modern will bring together Bowery’s outlandish and dazzling costumes alongside painting, photography and videos to explore how he changed art, fashion and popular culture forever. Charting the journey of a young boy from Australia, who became a globally recognised cultural figure. 

During the Press View of ‘Leigh Bowery!’ Exhibition On Tuesday 26 February 2025 RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey caught up with Jess Baxter, Assistant Curator of the exhibition, for a bit of background to the life of Leigh Bowery, his work during the 80s and up to his death in 1994 along with the impact his work has had on art, culture and much more.

This is an interview with eight-year-old Caoimhe O'Brien about her short story called Invisible Charlie. The story features in a book called Green, Donk The Dinosaur, helping to raise funds for a local sight loss charity (Sight Matters) based on the Isle of Man.

Fancy yourself a skilled fugitive? Well, if you have someone with whom you can make a perfect duo, and Hubert has something for you. 

SeeAbility is a charity supporting people with learning disabilities or autism, who may also have sight loss. 

In 2024, they recruited two new trustees in Michael Smith and Keith Valentine, both leading figures in the business and charity worlds who have lived experience of sight loss.

Amelia spoke to Michael and Keith, alongside Nicholas Carson‑Ashurst, Digital Marketing Manager at SeeAbility, to share more about their new roles.

Martin Ralfe who is blind is urging all visually impaired people to download the what3words app to their smartphones, following on from his experience of using the app to help direct the emergency services to a road accident where the car his Dad was driving him in came off the road and ended up in water.

Martin goes back over the accident with RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey and how he is now encouraging all blind and partially sighted people to have the what3words app on their smartphones and know how to use it.

Toby was also joined by Khongoroo Otgonbayar, Partnerships Lead at what3words to give a bit of background to the development of the app, how it can be of course used for directing the emergency services but also how the app is being used in so many different ways.

Brett Devloo is a blind skateboarder from Canada, he tells Daivd Hogg about sight loss has shaped his Skateboarding and his initiative to get blind and partially sighted school children learning on iPads.

As the national Theatre continues to make their productions accessible to everyone on Wednesday 5 February 2025 1,000 primary school children from within Greater London attended a schools performance of ‘Ballet Shoes’ in the National Theatre’s Olivier Theatre with audio description and a pre show touch tour for the young visually impaired children from the primary schools too.

The live description for ‘Ballet Shoes’ was delivered by Eleanor Stollery, a young visually impaired Actor, Voice Over Artist and Audio Describer who had previously delivered the live description for the national Theatre’s schools performance of ‘The Witches’ too. 

RNIB Connect Radios Toby Davey went along to the schools performance of ‘Ballet Shoes’ with Eleanor’s live audio description and firstly explored through touch some of the props from ‘Ballet Shoes’ that were on display as part of the pre show touch tour for the young visually impaired children. 

As part of the touch tour there was also a ballet lesson for the young visually impaired children so that they could experience some of the ballet moves that feature in ‘Ballet Shoes’.  Shortly after the ballet lesson Toby caught up with a group of visually impaired Primary School children to find out how they had found the touch tour and that ballet lesson.  

Toby also chatted with Ellara Wakely, Head of Schools Engagement at the National Theatre to find out more about why the National Theatre wanted to make the schools performance of ‘Ballet Shoes’ accessible to young visually impaired children.

Toby of course also caught up with Eleanor just after the end of the performance to find out how it had all gone for Eleanor delivering the live audio description for Ballet Shoes’ at the national Theatre’s Olivier Theatre.

‘Periphery: How We See (and Don't See) the World’ is a truly accessible immersive exhibition of work by Multi-Disciplinary Artist and Designer Sarah Jane Palmer which came from conversations Sarah had with her Farther about the visual hallucinations he had been experiencing through the condition Charles Bonnet Syndrome which is currently on at The Point, Doncaster until 16 May 2025. 

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey recently caught up with Sarah to find out a bit more about her background as an artist, how the conversations with her father about the visual hallucinations were turned into the installations and work that is on display in ’Periphery’ at the Point in Doncaster. 

Sarah also explained to Toby that having now worked to make ‘Periphery’ accessible to blind and partially sighted people, Sarah will be working hard to encourage other artists and galleries to make their exhibitions truly accessible to everyone too.

The RNIB Voice of the Customer Tracker survey is a regular survey for blind and partially sighted people, whether registered or not, to share their views on a range of topics and help to shape the work that the RNIB does around access and inclusion for people living with sight loss. 

Topics that have been covered in past Tracker Surveys have included: technology, cost of living, financial inclusion, mental wellbeing, rehabilitation and social relationships.

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey was joined by Robin Kay, RNIB Research and Insight Analyst to talk about the latest Tracker Survey which will be focusing on blind and partially sighted people's experiences surrounding a range of areas including eye care, getting around, employment and financial inclusion amongst others.

Northern Ballet are following on from the great success of their children’s ballet production of the ‘Tortoise & the Hare’, with an environmental themed reimagining of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale ‘Hansel & Gretel’ as they take a trip into the forest, unaware of the damage they leave behind. When they get lost, the siblings meet a host of spirited friends who teach them how we can all better look after the planet - and have some fun along the way.

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey was joined by Pippa Moore MBE, Northern Ballet’s Artistic and Learning Assistant plus Audio Describer along with Northern Ballet dancer Harris Beattie, one of the Choreographers of ‘Hansel & Gretel’ to give some background to the staging of their new children’s ballet.

‘Hansel & Gretel’ premieres at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds from 15 - 22 February, before embarking on an extensive UK tour from 1 March - 7 June.

Evie Roberts is 15 years old, totally blind and is from the Isle of Mann. About 19 months ago, she started to make her own podcast called Talking in the dark raising awareness of visual impairment. Evie talks to other disabled people and gets to know more about them in a fun and light-hearted way. Evie won a Young Hero of Mann Award in 2023. Jennifer Murray talks to Evie to find out more.

‘Bird Song’ tells the story of one man’s journey through an all-consuming love affair and into the horror of the First World War. In pre-war France, a young Englishman, Stephen Wraysford, embarks on a passionate and dangerous affair with the beautiful Isabelle Azaire that turns their world upside down. As the war breaks out over the idyll of his former life, Stephen must lead his men through the carnage of the Battle of the Somme and through the sprawling tunnels that lie deep underground. Faced with the unprecedented horror of the war Stephen clings to the memory of Isabelle as his world explodes around him.

Following a triumphant season last year, and by popular demand, Birmingham’s own Alison Hammond returned to Birmingham Hippodrome’s panto, leading the cast as The Magical Mermaid!

Alison joins Hippodrome panto star and award-winning comic Matt Slack, who returned for an eleventh season as Smee, star of stage and screen Danny Mac as Captain Hook, resident dame Andrew Ryan and Billie-Kay who returnd for a second year as Tink!

They were joined by Rhiannon Chesterman as Wendy, and Noah Harrison in the title role of Peter Pan.

With amazing special effects, stunning sets and beautiful costumes direct from The London Palladium, Peter Pan takes the whole family on a magical trip to Neverland like never before!

The Little Mermaid is a family show with bangs and flashes, a couple of scary moments, a bit of panto innuendo (never intended to offend) – and some very old jokes!

With Pinocchio smashing Box Office records, Newcastle Theatre Royal premiered another new pantomime spectacular with a magical adventure under the sea – The Little Mermaid.

Cast included Newcastle’s pantomime superstar Danny Adams, Theatre Royal favourites Clive Webb, Chris Hayward and Joe McElderry, returning panto regulars Mick Potts, Wayne Smith, Kylie Ann Ford, and Christina Berriman Dawson and newcomers Christian Maynard and Maggie Lynne, as they dived to the depths of the ocean in an exhilarating and enchanting theatrical extravaganza.

Danny plays Danny Crabstix, best friend to Ariel, the bravest mermaid in King Triton’s kingdom, who must fight-off the evil Sea Witch after she steals her voice in return for the ability to live amongst the humans, way above the ocean.

On Wednesday 29th of January RNIB Scotland's Braille 200 reception was held at the Scottish Parliament. 

A night of celebration for the tactile reading and writing system, our Paulina Kuchorew was there and spoke with Provost of North Ayrshire Anthea Dickson.

As the Six Nations rugby tournament kicks off, Hywel Davies has been hearing about how ITV are making matches more accessible for fans at home.

An important meeting took place at the RNIB Grimaldi building of the Shaping The Future Of Volunteering Group. Hubert spoke to two co-chairs of the group, Andrew Lennox from Guide Dogs, and Cathrine Johnstone from the Royal Voluntary Service, to find out the purpose of the meeting, what lessons have been learned, and their thoughts on the currant state of volunteering.

As we celebrate 200 years since the invention of the tactile reading and writing system  braille, RNIB’s Braille and Beyond Tour is continuing to make its way across the UK.

And on Tuesday 28th of January the tour arrived at The Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

Paulina Kuchorew spoke with Dave Williams, ahead of the doors opening for the day's event.

Guernsey Blind Association was founded in 1919 and to this day, continues to support visually impaired people in Guernsey. The charity offers a wide range of services from social activities, a resource centre equipped with aids helping with independent living to the provision of practical and emotional support and more. This week continuing the theme of winter tales Vidar was reviewing The Snowman as the production returned home to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre with description by professional Audio Describer Carolyn Smith.

About The Snowman

The Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s enchanting production of The Snowman has been delighting audiences for over 30 years and is the West End’s longest running Christmas Show. It returned home over the festive season to give Birmingham audiences the chance to be part of the magic again.

When a young boy’s snowman comes to life on Christmas Eve, the two set off on a night-time quest for adventure. They meet Father Christmas, dancing penguins, reindeer and crowds of The Snowman’s friends, but will they escape evil Jack Frost and get back home for Christmas morning?

Based on Raymond Brigg’s much-loved book and featuring Howard Blake‘s classic song Walking In The Air, this enchanting live show has thrilled audiences throughout the world since first appearing on stage over twenty-five years ago.

The return of RNIB Connect Voices opportunities to RNIB Connect Radio with Amrit Dhaliwal who is just coming up to the end of her internship with the RNIB Research and Insight Team.

Robotic Guide Dog Research

Maia, a University of Edinburgh student, is working on their final year honours project to develop a robotic guide dog system. The study will explores how robotic guide dogs could enhance the lives of people with visual impairments, and how to improve the way current technology-based navigation systems interact with their users.

Maia is hoping to learn about your daily experiences, how you interact with guide dogs (or manage without one), and your thoughts on how a robotic guide dog could support you in your everyday life.

What’s involved?
 
A short interview (approximately 30 minutes) at a time that works for you, conducted online, via phone or in person (if you live around Edinburgh). There may also be an opportunity to test the system in early March if you live in the Edinburgh area, however this is completely optional.

Becoming a ‘Visibly Better Employer’ helps businesses to widen their talent pool and increase opportunities for blind and partially sighted workers. Hywel Davies has been speaking to Bron Afon Community Housing, one of the latest employers to take part in the scheme.

Craig Brown is from Leicester and lost his sight at the age of 30 as part of having type one diabetes. To help him cope with his sight loss, Craig took up learning to play the guitar and now wants to inspire others to do likewise. He also does some work with Vista, a local sight loss charity in Leicester who helped him come to terms with his sight loss. Jennifer Murray finds out more.

On Tuesday, 26 November 2024 RNIB along with their event partner, The British Library, hosted an official launch event celebrating 200 years of the power of braille.

To celebrate Braille on World Braille Day, RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey, a braille user himself, has gathered round the table four other enthusiastic users of braille to discuss all things braille from how they learnt braille, the benefits of learning and using braille for everyone, emerging new braille technology, some quirky ways of using braille to what braille means to them.

Joining Toby round the table are - Victoria Oruwari - Freelance Opera & Classical Singer, Kerrie Campbell - Educational Psychologist for South Lanarkshire Council, Zoe Dixon - Composer and singer along with Stuart Lawler - Head of Digital Content and Business Development Manager (for Sight and Sound Technology.

On World Braille Day 2025 as we mark the day that Louis Braille was born (4 January 1809) and in the year where we all celebrate 200 years since Louis Braille invented his six-dot tactile reading and writing system that we all know as Braille do join our Toby Davey for an amazing guided tour of the Louis Braille Museum. 

The Louis Braille Museum is located in the actual Braille family home where Louis grew up in the village of Coupvray just over 30 miles from the centre of Paris which includes his Father’s workshop where he had the accident that caused his blindness.

Farida Saïdi the Director of the Louis Braille Museum gave RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey a guided tour of both the house and museum, giving an insight into Louis Braille’s early life and how he came to invent his six-dot tactile reading and writing system.  Farida very kindly also offered Toby the opportunity to explore through touch some of Louis’ belongings including one of his raised letter school books, a domino that he had played with plus the Braille slate he used to write his Braille on.

This week Vidar was reviewing a new version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Red Shoes by Playwright Nancy Harris at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre with description by Professional Audio Describers Ess Grange and Carolyn Smith.

About The Red shoes:

When an orphaned young woman is taken in by some local do-gooders, she is expected to be seen and not heard. Dazzled by a pair of beautiful shoes, she sees the chance to do and be so much more, but soon her feet betray her, taking her to places she does not wish to go.

This Christmas, get up close to the magic as playwright Nancy Harris brings Hans Christian Andersen’s dark fairy tale into the 21st century in the intimate surroundings of the Swan Theatre.

Directed by Kimberley Rampersad (Associate Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival, Canada) in her RSC debut, The Red Shoes is both wickedly funny and a cautionary tale of pride, vanity and how we all deserve to dance how we wish to dance.

The Royal Ballet and Opera House in London continue their programme of access to their productions for blind and partially sighted people with both live and recorded audio described performances, along with accompanying introductory notes and touch tours.

If you have ever wondered what goes in to audio describing ballet and dance then do join RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey for an insight into how the Royal Ballet’s current production of Cinderella is brought to life for blind and partially sighted people through pre show introductory notes, touch tours and audio described performances.

Prior to the general rehearsal of Cinderella On Monday 2 December 2024 Toby caught up with Professional Audio Describers Julia Grundy and Jane Brambley to find out what goes in to the process of describing a ballet production like Cinderella, how they both work on their description scripts, thinking about what props and costumes to include on a touch tour and whether they adapt their live description script at all for the recorded description which is now available at every performance of Cinderella. 

After chatting with Julia and Jane Toby also caught up with Ania Kapazat, one of the Administrative Producers at the Royal Ballet, to find out more about how she has helped Julia and Jane with their description as well as listening in to the dry run of their audio description at the general rehearsal of Cinderella.

During the first interval of the general rehearsal of Cinderella Toby managed to catch up with Kevin O'Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet, to firstly chat about how things have gone in getting this production of Cinderella to the general rehearsal, how embedded access and audio description is within the company and a snap shot stand out moment from Cinderella that really shows how everything comes together to bring the story of Cinderella to life on stage with audio description too.

About Cinderella

The Royal Ballet’s current production of Cinderella continues on the main stage of the Royal Opera House until 16 January 2025 with recorded audio description now available at every performance. 

This enchanting ballet by The Royal Ballet’s Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton is a theatrical experience for all the family over the festive holiday. A co-production between the Royal Ballet and the national Ballet of Canada.

In 1939, Frederick Ashton first began to consider creating a full-length work, the Company's first three-act ballet. At the time it seemed like the obvious next step for British ballet. The idea was shelved during the war but in 1946 Ashton returned urgently to it. Inspired by other balletic adaptations of Cinderella coming out of Russia, Ashton chose to create his own version of Charles Perrault’s famous rags-to-riches story. Set to Prokofiev’s exquisite score the ballet received its premiere in 1948 featuring Moira Shearer and Michael Some's in the lead roles. 

A World Where Dreams Blossom 

The designs of this production of Cinderella are heavily influenced by nature and flowers. As the Fairy Godmother and the Seasons’ fairies come into Cinderella’s world, the muted tones of the family living room are taken over by a burst of colour. The creative team behind the exquisite world of Cinderella includes set designer Tom Pye (My Neighbour Totoro, Olivier award for Best Set Design), costume designer Alexandra Byrne (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Academy Award for Best Costume Design), lighting designer David Finn (Brokeback Mountain), video designer Finn Ross (Les Miserables, Frozen) and illusions by Chris Fisher (Harry Potter and The Cursed Child).

In the lead up to Christmas and with many productions of what is a real classic festive ballet treat The Nutcracker, what might it be like going to an audio described ballet performance from a blind or partially sighted persons point of view. 

Well for a bit of a festive audio described theatre review RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey was not only joined by ITV News Inclusion and Diversity Consultant Vidar Hjarding MBE but also by our very own Allan Russell to go on a magical journey through a number of ballet productions of The Nutcracker. Following the whole AD experience from the pre-show introductory notes, to the touch tour prior to the performance and then to the live audio described performance itself.

Allan reflected on going to see the recent Scottish Ballet production of The Nutcracker with Vidar looking back on many performances of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker which he has seen many times with audio description.

As we all celebrate 200 years since Louis Braille invented his six-dot tactile reading and writing system for blind and partially sighted people through the RNIB Braille 200 year long celebrations raising the awareness of braille to visually impaired and sighted people here on RNIB Connect Radio we are chatting with people who are braille users to find out what braille means to them and how braille has maybe helped them throughout their life.

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey caught up with the Right Honourable Lord Blunkett who has been using braille since a very early age to find out how it has helped him throughout his life and of course during his political career too.

At this time of the year here on RNIB Connect Radio we do like to catch up with other organisations across the world who like the RNIB are supporting blind and partially sighted people, helping to make a more inclusive society for people living with sight loss for a bit of a look back on how 2024 was for them plus a look forward to some highlights that might be coming up in 2025.    

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey was joined in our London studio by Angela Bonfanti, president and Chief Executive Officer of the CNIB Foundation in Canada to reflect on how 2024 has Been for the organisation plus some highlights for the year ahead too.

As we all celebrate 200 years since Louis Braille invented his six-dot tactile reading and writing system, Braille, Angela also gives a picture of the Braille services in Canada and ways they will be marking the bicentenary too.

Our David Hogg hears about how you can experience the magic of Christmas this year in regent Street and St James’, even if you’re Blind or Partially Sighted.

As blind Liverpudlian Comedian Chris McCausland and his Professional Dancer Dianne Buswell lifted the glitter ball trophy on Saturday Night (14 December 2024) to win Strictly come Dancing 2024 our RNIB Connect Radio Strictly Star Reviewer blind Ballroom Dancer Shaun Hayward is back with his final review of the series. 

For the grand final each couple had to dance three dances, the Judges choice, their show dance and their favourite dance of the competition.  

For Chris and Dianne the Judges chose their couples choice dance to ‘Instant Karma’ by John Lennon with that black out moment which gave them a score of 38 from the Judges. 

Then to their show dance to  ‘You Get What You Give’ by The New Radicals with again a total score of 38 from the judges.

Ending with their Favourite dance of the series which had to be their waltz to ‘You’ll Never Walk alone’’ with the Judges giving them top marks with a total score of 40, a standing ovation from the audience and a hug for Chris from Craig too.

Then Shaun and Toby chatted about how JB and Loren, Tasha and Aljaž and not forgetting Sarah and Vito had done during the grand final.

Each week we sit down with Matt Stringer, CEO of RNIB, to look at some of the big stories coming from the UK sight loss charity.

This week Mat began with news that the RNIB Pre-Employment Team had won the Tailored Employment Support category at the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA) Employability 2024 Awards and also some meetings Matt has had recently around employment too. 

Then to the great news that two RNIB Volunteers George Sullivan and Stephen Newton are up for the Unsung Hero Category in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards 2024 on Tuesday night (17 December 2024) 

With Matt ending this week by talking about the great achievement for equality and sight loss awareness with blind Liverpudlian Comedian Chris McCausland and his professional Dancer Dianne Buswell making it to the final of Strictly Come Dancing 2024 and will they lift the Glitter Ball Trophy on Saturday Night (14 December 2024) and win the competition.
