Content warning for discussions of sexual violence. This is a heavy one, friends.
Niamh explores the monster behind the myth - Medusa. From ancient villain and cautionary tale for wayward women, Medusa has endured and evolved into a symbol of strength and resistance for survivors of sexual violence. We look at the differences between her Greek and Roman origins and what each version of her tells us about how society viewed women and the harms done against them at the time. Tangents take us to discussions of rape culture, victim blaming and how we navigate life after trauma. (with some Noah Wyle fangirling sprinkled in).

Emily's first episode of Season 3 is a dark history account all about the science (and alleged magic) of midwifery, We delve into how the woman-dominated profession caused jealousy and suspicion from the (male) Church which led to persecution, executions, and a suppression of new knowledge. We learn about the realities of childbirth, how midwives were often blamed for unpreventable losses - and their successes attributed to the devil. Yes, we are ranting again.

For thousands of years, different cultures have personified death in various ways, but few figures are as enduring—or as terrifying—as the Grim Reaper. Cloaked - literally in darkness, skeletal and cold, he’s the one who comes for us all, scythe in hand, to reap our souls when our time has come. But how did this eerie image come to be?

Thanks so much to Ewan for stepping in to be the Emily of the episode. We trace the origins of zombies back to Haiti and Ewan runs us through zombies in pop culture, namedropping some best known media. Then Niamh brings us through to modern day substance-afflicted zombies recorded in medical journals. Lets not forget the relationship between zombies and revenants in mythology, how they have shown up in Game of Thrones, and how your ancestors buried their dead to ward against them coming back!

Deep beneath the surface of the earth, in a realm hidden from the eyes of the living, there exists a place where death itself holds court. The air is cold, the ground unyielding, and at the heart of it all, sits a figure with half a face of life, half a face of decay—this is Hel, the queen of Helheim.

We go right back to the beginning with Atorgatis, then take a swim across continents with folk tales about Suvannamaccha, Rusalki, the Renvyle Merrow (Murrough) in Ireland, and how a school of scary ladies held up construction in Zimbabwe. In the quiet, misty valleys of northern Europe and beyond, where the wind whispers secrets through the heather and the rugged hills keep ancient tales close to their heart, there existed a peculiar and eerie tradition—the ritual of the sin-eater.
Surprise! Niamh keeps her word for once and does an episode she teased months ago. This was just enough for a short. The Sin Eater in Fargo was a huge inspiration for this one, and given the research out there, he was portrayed perfectly!

Then we look at Western wiccan influences and Majo, which probably resulted in your fave lil Japanese delivery broom rider. Then to close out, a look at Japan's answer to the Salem Witch Trials - the persecution of the Yuta in Okinawa.
