On this episode of Random Encounter, we're chatting about previews of two games we're excited for in 2025!
First up is a hands-on preview of Obsidian's newest first-person RPG, Avowed. A spin-off from the beloved Pillars of Eternity series, Avowed is being presented as Obsidian's answer to Skyrim. That said, it has an identity all its own, avoiding the full-on open world for a series of expansive zones, similar to their previous RPG, The Outer Worlds. Mark got a chance to play through some of the early game, and he is excited to share his impressions!
Next, we sent Zek all the way down to LA for a hands-on preview of Path of Exile 2, the sequel to the long-running, free-to-play action RPG, Path of Exile. What started as a Diablo-clone has evolved into a game with a massive community of fans who support the game through cosmetics and other ethical in-app purchases. Does this sequel live up to the standard set by the original, or did they literally sell out? Zek thinks it's the latter, and we hope so too!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we are chatting about a long-awaited remake and an unexpected spin-off!
First, Zach is here to share his experience with the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. This ground-up remake of the beloved Famicom/NES JRPG has been a long time coming, first announced in 2021. With updated graphics, mechanics, storyline, and scope, this second coming of DQIII (or given prior remakes, third coming? Maybe fourth? No, fifth!) might be the perfect jumping-on point for folks interested in the iconic, long-running series!
Then, Caitlin joins us to discuss one of the most unexpected spin-offs in years: LEGO Horizon Adventures. Essentially a lighthearted remake of the first game in the Horizon series, Horizon Zero Dawn, LEGO Horizon takes everything we love about this beautiful post-apocalyptic world and translates it into LEGO. That means stunning Lego recreations of many machine beasts, including Watchers, Thunderjaws, and Tallnecks! Does this LEGO spin-off capture what makes the Horizon series so special?
And finally, hey, we chat about politics for a while because this is the world we live in.

On this episode of Random Encounter, we have another two GOTY contenders for you!
First up is Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the first new Dragon Age in a decade ! After BioWare's last two flops, they desperately needed a win, and it certainly sounds like they got one with this new installment of the long-running and beloved series! Audra is here to share all of her thoughts on how Dragon Age has evolved since Dragon Age: Inquisition back in 2014!
And then Ben is here to torture Jono by chatting about Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven! A remake of Super Famicom's Romancing Saga 2 from back in 1993, Revenge of the Seven lovingly reimagines the epic storyline set over hundreds of years and dozens of generations of heroes. Don't let Jono's grumbling about the series put you off because this might be a dark horse favorite for GOTY!

On this episode of Random Encounter, two first-timers are joining us to chat about two of the year's biggest games!
First up, Zek is joined by Zach to rave about Atlus' latest RPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio. Known for the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series, Metaphor offers a brand-new world full of all the things you love about previous Atlus games: close character relationships, incredible world-building, and jaw-dropping UI. It's absolutely in the running for GOTY 2024!
But another contender for GOTY is the brand-new entry in the Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and Paul and Mike are here to talk about it! While it may look like a retro-inspired 2D Zelda game on the surface, this title brings a shockingly novel innovation to the series: Zelda as a playable character. Imagine!

On this episode of Random Encounter, it's time to chat about some recent game compilations!
Game compilations are not only a fantastic way to re-experience older games, but they also offer excellent value for your money! Even if the games are a little old, you're still getting multiple games for the price of one. And if you're lucky, the developer will have gone the extra mile to add quality-of-life features, remastered graphics and sound, and lots of additional bells and whistles!
So, Zach is here to discuss the Castlevania Dominus Collection, a compilation of all three DS-era Castlevania games (Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia). These, along with the titles in the Castlevania Advance Collection, were the games that cemented the portmanteau "Metroidvania," so they are well worth a second (or maybe even first) look.
Then, Jono gets to chat about one of his favorite series with the release of the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection. Combining Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and the previously-unreleased-in-the-West Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit, this compilation will give you the same wacky suspects, logical deductions, and heartfelt characters that the series is known for!
Plus, thanks to some incredible timing, Jono and Zach get to freak out about the upcoming Lunar Remastered Collection! This is going to be a good one!

On this episode of Random Encounter, Jono and Hilary geek out over a fantastic book focusing on the localization of beloved indie RPG, Undertale.
Video game localizations have come a long way since the days of spoony bards. When we usually think about game localization, we think Japanese to English. But what about the other way around?
Legends of Localization is a book series written by professional video game and anime translator Clyde Mandelin. In his latest volume, Legends of Localization Book 3: Undertale, Mandelin walks us through the incredible process of taking Undertale, a Western love letter to JRPGs, and localizing it for Japanese audiences. The book is absolutely loaded with amazing insights, entertaining anecdotes, and fascinating tidbits about the monumental effort it takes to translate and localize this uniquely quirky game. Join Jono and Hilary as they take a deep dive into this fascinating tome!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're talking politics! Well, no, not really, but there are some jokes about politics in here...
First up, Izzy has played the first new Mana game since 2020's Trials of Mana remake, Visions of Mana! With spiky hair, lush landscapes, and real-time RPG action, it's undeniably a Mana game, but does it live up to the heights of the series' golden age on the SNES?
Then, Jerry reviews what's been described as the first AAA video game ever developed in China, Black Myth: Wukong. Does this stunning Souls-like portend the rise of the AAA Chinese gaming industry, or is it a missed opportunity in the politics of soft power (See, jokes about politics! Whee!)?

First up, Jono binge-plays the brand-new remaster of the third season of Telltale Games' Sam & Max series: The Devil's Playhouse. Lovingly remastered by Skunkape Games, does this remaster bring the 2010 point-and-click up to speed? Or is it left as roadkill on the highway of history?
Then, Hilary chats about the recent demo of the eagerly awaited revival of the Mana series: Visions of Mana. Coming out on August 29th, does this demo deliver that classic Mana taste?
Finally, Abe teams up with the turtles-in-a-half-shell to rescue Master Splinter in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Spintered Fate. Rather than the tried-and-true, beat-em-up genre, Splintered Fate pulls its inspiration from Hades. And boy, it pulls a LOT of inspiration! Is this Hades-like worth playing, or is it better left in the sewers?

On this episode of Random Encounter, we’re chatting about heisting steam-powered robots and the foggiest post-apocalyptic city you've ever seen.
First up, Ben embraces his inner robot pirate with the sequel to 2015's TRPG, Steamworld Heist, Steamworld Heist II. The latest entry in the multi-genre Steamworld series, Heist II delivers a side-scrolling, turn-based spin on XCOM-style gameplay with a healthy dose of adorable steam-powered robots. Does it live up to the first game and the rest of the series?
Then, did the hit Amazon series leave you craving a new Fallout game? Well, as usual, the modders are doing what Bethesdon't with the astonishing full Fallout 4 conversion mod, Fallout London. This mod completely recreates London, England and its boroughs, giving the famous city a post-nuclear apocalypse vibe. Yes, it was made by fans, but can it deliver a New Vegas-style experience to Fallout 4?

First up, Abe joins us to discuss Dungeons of Hinterberg. This action RPG with Zelda and Persona-like elements is set in a beautiful Austrian resort town, combining combat, puzzles, and social interactions. How do these elements come together to create a memorable adventure (and vacation)?
Then, Neal is here to chat about the modern remaster of Vay, a classic RPG from the Sega CD era. This re-release aims to bring the nostalgic experience to modern platforms, maintaining the original charm while enhancing the graphics and gameplay with quality-of-life features. On this episode of Random Encounter, Jono invites two of the folks behind the recent indie game Lil' Guardsman onto the show to chat about its development.
Back in the early days of the pandemic, Toronto-based composer Scott Christian and his business partner Artiom Komarov made the remarkable decision to leave their successful careers and jump into the indie dev scene. Recruiting a small but passionate team of programmers, designers, and writers, they founded Hilltop Studios and successfully launched their first title, Lil' Guardsman, in January 2024. But it wasn't an easy road to get there!
As Jono happens to be very old friends with both Scott and Lil' Guardsman co-writer Jeremy Lapalme, this seems like a perfect opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the realities of indie game dev. What's it like to build an indie studio and develop your dream game from scratch? And is that dream within reach of anyone? Let's talk about what it's like being an indie developer in 2024!

On this episode of Random Encounter, Zach joins the party to chat about the recent spiritual successor to the Suikoden series, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, and the new DLC for Final Fantasy XVI, The Rising Tide.
Hundred Heroes has been one of our most anticipated JRPGs since its Kickstarter back in 2020. Led by Suikoden creator Yoshitaka Murayama, Hundred Heroes promised a return to the style of PSX Suikoden games (especially Suikoden II) with gorgeous 2D graphics and an epic narrative focused on war-torn countries, base-building, and character recruitment. Zach is one of the biggest Suikoden fans out there, so we can't wait to find out if he enjoyed the game as much as he hoped!
Then, Zach also shares his thoughts on The Rising Tide, the DLC of one of his favorite games of the last few years, Final Fantasy XVI. As the last piece of DLC coming out for XVI, does it put a bow on the top of this much-loved entry of the series?
Oh, and Jono is grouchy about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

On this episode of Random Encounter, ex-host Random Greg Delmage returns to share his film expertise while chatting about the new Fallout TV show!
Video game adaptations are hot right now, and Amazon has just dropped what might be the best one yet: Fallout! Based on the long-running RPG series, Fallout, the show is an exploration of the far future after a nuclear war in the 21st century destroyed all of civilization. With a pitch-perfect mix of dark humor, brutal violence, and a retro-50s future aesthetic, Fallout translates everything we love about the games into a brand-new, in-continuity story set in the LA Wasteland.
Jono reviewed the entire series for the site last week (spoiler: he loved it), and he's excited to be reunited with Greg to chat about why this series should be of interest to all of the RPG fans out there!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're looking at a game-of-the-year contender and the latest from one of the industry's most visionary indie devs.
First up, Izzy is here to chat about Dragon's Dogma 2. The sequel to Capcom's cult-classic Dragon's Dogma, DD2 is the true realization of many of the ahead-of-their-time gameplay mechanics of its predecessor. However, this positive fanfare has recently been overshadowed by the controversy of predatory microtransactions included in this full-price game. Do these money-grubbing measures really impact players' overall enjoyment of the title?
Then, Tim is here to chat about Lucas Pope's latest game, Mars After Midnight. Known for his indie classics Papers, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn, Pope has moved from consoles and PC over to the crank-enhanced handheld known as the Playdate. Does the tiny screen and simplified gameplay hurt MaM, or do the limitations inspire brilliance?

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're looking at two very different kinds of follow-ups to beloved games: a spiritual successor and a fan game.
First up, we're talking about a long-awaited revival of Ogre Battle-style SRPGs with Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord (the most bizarre name for a game since Triangle Strategy). Featuring a mix of real-time strategy, turn-based party combat, and overworld exploration, Unicorn Overlord really hit the sweet spot for Josh. Is it a game for everyone, though?
And the overwhelming amount of fan content inspired by 2015's Undertale finally reaches its logical culmination with an incredible fan game that actually has the blessing of creator Toby Fox: Undertale Yellow. A prequel that follows the story of a previous soul who fell into the underground, Yellow delivers an experience that doesn't just live up to its inspiration but surpasses it in some ways. Aleks' feature, Undertale Yellow Feels Like a Legit Prequel, not only brings attention to this incredible labor of love, but also helped to open his eyes to the potential of fan games!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're taking a look at a long-running RPG series that has only made sporadic, but noteworthy, appearances here in the West!
Mystery Dungeon began as a Dragon Quest IV spinoff back in 1993, but since then, there have been dozens of games in the series, including crossover titles with Final Fantasy (Chocobo’s Dungeon 2) and Pokémon (Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX), along with a standalone series (Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer). And with the release of the latest entry, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island, we thought it would be a great time to take a deep dive into the series in preparation for our "So You Want to Get Into the Mystery Dungeon Series..." feature! On this episode of Random Encounter, it's finally time to talk about one of the most anticipated "Part 2s" in video game history: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth!
Ever since part 1 of the FFVII remake trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Remake, was released in 2020, we've been desperate to know where the story is heading. Will it continue along as we remember it, or diverge in unexpected and, no doubt, controversial ways? Never fear, because Zach is here to chat about his review of Rebirth, sharing his thoughts about the story, characters, battle system, world, and where he thinks the final part of this trilogy might go (hopefully before 2030).
Oh, and don't worry, no spoilers will be found here about who may or may not die in the game!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're "cranking" up our game to chat about a farming-centric piece of DLC for a pixel-art action RPG and a rogue-like on a tiny, black-and-white screen.
First, Nick is here to share his thoughts about the farming DLC for 2021's Eastward, Eastward: Octopia. Having received solid reviews back when it was released, this new DLC strips out all of the combat and replaces it with some robust farm-sim mechanics. Coming in at around 20 hours' worth of gameplay for $6, Octopia might be an essential purchase for anyone who loves the original title or farming games!
Then, Tim makes his first appearance on Random to chat about the rogue-like RPG Under the Castle and the tiny handheld console you need to play it, the Playdate. The Playdate is a fascinating piece of hardware, looking like a tiny, high-resolution yellow Gameboy Pocket with a crank on the side. The system is pricy, but does Tim think it and Under the Castle are worth the money?

In complete opposition to just about every video game plot ever, here you need to kill the princess or the world is doomed! Or is it? With a ton of endings and twists around every choice, Slay the Princess has captured Jerry's attention as a potentially overlooked gem of 2023.
And speaking of overlooked gems, Aleks has another one for you from 1999 with Planet Laika, a Japanese-only game from Quintet, the developer of Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma. This lost 32-bit-era adventure/RPG hybrid features a highly experimental narrative, mind-bending graphics, and a philosophical bent that would have sent any translator in the late 1990s into a stress-related leave (which might be why it was never localized). Thankfully, Planet Laika now has a high-quality fan translation! So, let's find out what we missed out on!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we chat all of the news from the 2024 Game Awards, and delve into two recent indie RPGs.
First, The Game Awards came and went faster than the music playing off the winners! Baldur's Gate 3 was the champion of the evening with Best Game, but Alan Wake 2 walked away with a good share of the awards, as well. Join the panel as we gossip about the absolute boatload of game announcements that we can expect in 2024 and 2025 (and, if we're being really honest, probably 2026 and beyond)!
Then, Abe walks us through the dark, foreboding woods to chat about Little Goody Two Shoes, an indie horror RPG with life-sim, dating-sim, arcade, and roguelike elements. Is this fairytale-inspired game a "Grimm" experience, or does it deliver a happy ending? Then, Izzy dives into the timestream with the time-looping indie RPG, In Stars and Time. Do the game get tiresome, or do they want to replay it again and again?

On the next Random Encounter, we delve into the vibrant worlds of Super Mario RPG and Persona 5 Tactica, and tackle the complex issue of redemption arcs in game publishing.
First, Caitlin unpacks the Super Mario RPG Remake. Despite some minor frame rate drops and easy difficulty, does the game's timeless appeal shine through in this newly revitalized Switch release? Following that, Ben explores Persona 5 Tactica. Diverging from the gameplay of previous Persona SRPGs and instead pulling from XCOM, does it still deliver a solid Persona 5 experience while exploring new characters?
Finally, the panel discusses redemption arcs in game publishing. What are the implications of companies releasing flawed games and then improving them over time? We'll delve into whether this trend benefits the industry and gamers, or if it sets a concerning precedent for game quality at launch.

First, Jono discovers the yakuza's latest crisis in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Does this shorter Yakuza tale live up to its pedigree? Then Izzy Parsons gets to relive their childhood with the recent remake, Star Ocean: The Second Story R. Does this remake do justice to the original PSX game? Finally, Sollosi talks us through his experience with the indie sensation Dave the Diver, and how it kind of reminds him of both Like a Dragon and Hades!

On the next Random Encounter, we're exploring the narrative horror depths of World of Horror and the deep strategic and colorful layers of Wargroove 2.
First, Bob Richardson will guide us through World of Horror. With its unique 1-bit artistic style and roguelike narrative structure, does the game offer a lasting experience that keeps players coming back for more? Following that, Ben Love will share his thoughts on Wargroove 2. The game brings new gameplay mechanics and thematic elements to the table, but does it manage to build on the success of its predecessor and meet the high expectations of fans?
To round out the episode, we'll address a reader question about the increasing presence of RPG elements in games that aren't traditionally part of the RPG genre. Is this a positive development that enriches the gaming experience, or does it risk diluting what makes RPGs unique and special?

On this week's Random Encounter, we're diving into a piece of DLC that redeems one of gaming's biggest disappointments, a Souls-like that cannot tell a lie, and a classic celebrating its 30th anniversary.
First, Aleks guides us through the shadowy world of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. Does this DLC redeem 2020's Cyberpunk 2077, or does it miss the mark? Following that, Noah takes us into the steampunk-inspired, puppet-filled realm of Lies of P. Does it distinguish itself in the crowded Souls-like genre, or does it deserve to be swallowed by a whale (or shark, depending on which version of Pinocchio you're familiar with)?
To round out the episode, it's the 30th anniversary of the classic Squaresoft action RPG, Secret of Mana. Does it still hold its own in today's gaming landscape? As we've recently learned, regardless of your answer, it's sure to inflame opinions online!

On this week's Random Encounter, we're delving into two recent farm-sim RPGs, exploring if they bring anything new to the genre.
First, Niki takes us through the remaster/remake of the classic DS farm-sim Rune Factory 3 Special. Is there anything genuinely special about it, or should you stick with more recent entries of the series? Following that, Sam visits the enchanting universe of Fae Farm. Does it set itself apart in the saturated market of farming simulations, or do the numerous bugs salt the fields for the future of this title? Finally, our panel takes a moment to consider the influence of the original SNES Harvest Moon. How has this classic shaped the farm-sim genre, and what traces of its legacy can be found in modern titles?

Then, Caitlin sets sail to mysterious islands in the retro-RPG Sea of Stars. Set in the same world as The Messenger, this indie gem combines classic JRPG elements with vibrant 2D graphics. Caitlin dives into the game's unique combat system, captivating story, and unforgettable soundtrack. Does Sea of Stars shine as bright as its celestial namesake?

Do these classic GBA RPGs from the early 2000s hold up today, or are they best left in the Recycle Bin of Windows XP? On this week’s Random Encounter, we’re talking about two games that, frankly, we can’t believe exist.
Many of us expect certain game series to “stay in their lane.” Mega Man is a platformer. Doom is an FPS. Metroid is, well, a Metroidvania. But when a series tries something completely different in a new genre, the results can vary in quality. Audra recently reviewed two such games, one that wildly succeeded and one that spectacularly failed. First up is The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, a game that takes the classic platforming characters and puts them into an Ace Attorney-style adventure game/visual novel. And then we are talking about Street Fighter: Duel, a mobile game that attempts to translate the classic fighting game into an RPG.

On this episode of Random Encounter, we’re talking about how to introduce your children to video games, specifically RPGs.
We’re far away from the 1980s, back when most parents saw video games as a “fad” or “waste of time.” Instead, parents nowadays see games as a legitimate form of entertainment at worst and an art form at best. So, how should parents today introduce their children to the world of video games? Jimmy explored this question in his recent feature, A Parent’s List of the Best Introductory RPGs for Kids, and we’re going to dive even deeper with the help of two other parents on staff, Monica and Wes. Also, childless Jono is here to “helpfully” provide his clueless point of view on parenting!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're diving into some recent non-RPG Final Fantasy spin-offs!
First up, we have the first console entry in the long-running Final Fantasy rhythm game series, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. Offering over 380 songs from every Final Fantasy game (with more songs from other Square Enix series on the way), it could be the ultimate entry of Theatrhythm, but does it get Bob tapping his toes along with the music? And then, the Shinra Electric Power Company puts our EiC Mike Salbato to work cleaning instruments of death in the Final Fantasy VII Remake DLC of PowerWash Simulator. Will he manage to clean the nooks and crannies of the Scorpion Sentinel in time to stop the criminal terrorist group, Avalanche? Find out in this week's Random Encounter!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're talking about two big recent RPGs, Octopath Traveler II and Like a Dragon: Ishin!
When the original Octopath Traveler came out in 2018, we'd never seen anything like its HD-2D art style. Now, Square Enix is back with a sequel, Octopath Traveler II, that addresses many of the criticisms leveled at the game five years ago. Does Zach think that OTII measures up? And speaking of games we've been waiting years for, Ryū ga Gotoku Ishin was a samurai spin-off from the Yakuza series, never released in the West. Thankfully, that's changed with its recent remake, Like a Dragon: Ishin! Jono has been losing his mind since he got his hands on it, but does this remake of a pre-Yakuza 0 entry of the series stand up to more modern games?

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're talking about two games: one controversial, one not!
Square Enix's recent release, Forspoken, had a rough ride during its development, and it doesn't look like that ended with its release. While many think it's a perfectly fine action RPG, others feel it's a disaster. Where does Izzy fall on that spectrum? Then, Brian indulges in his love of the beat-'em-up genre with the release of the RPG-infused River City Girls 2! And finally, should dated or problematic content in remasters and re-releases of old games be discussed in reviews? Jono passionately argues, yes. And also, he should probably drink less caffeine before recording these things...

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're talking about two awesome RPGs released at the tail end of 2022.
First up, Caitlin talks about her experience with the retro-indie JRPG, Chained Echoes. Primarily developed by a single person for the last seven years, this incredible JRPG evokes all those feelings back in the 16-bit age but with a ton of modern touches. It's simply an astonishing achievement. And Abe is here to discuss a ground-up remake of a classic Squaresoft Super Famicom TRPG that we missed out on back in the 90s, Front Mission 1st: Remake. Is it as good as the original, or does it just miss the mark?

On this episode of Random Encounter, Jono and Michael Sollosi team up to speak with the gang behind Zeboyd Games about their latest title: This Way Madness Lies!
Robert Boyd and William Stiernberg at Zeboyd Games have been turning out innovative indie RPGs since Breath of Death VII: The Beginning in 2010. And in their latest release, This Way Madness Lies, they improbably mash up the popular Japanese anime genre of Magical Girls with the works of the English Bard himself, William Shakespeare! Somehow, Robert and Bill managed to take some time out of their hectic release-week schedule to sit down and talk with us about the origins of the game, its development, and where Zeboyd might be going from here!

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're talking about asexual representation in video games.
A few weeks ago, RPGFan published a feature by our own Caitlin Argyros, focusing on asexual characters in RPGs. Spoiler alert: it's a pretty short list. Though queer representation has been on the rise over the last decade, the aspec community still struggles to be seen and heard in all forms of media, including gaming. This week, Jono and Caitlin discuss various types of representation in video games, the nature of roleplaying as someone who doesn't experience sexual or romantic attraction, and what the future might hold for characters on the asexual and aromantic spectrums.

On this episode of Random Encounter, it's Random Book Club again!
Here at RPGFan, we love our JRPGs: Tales, Trials, and everything in between. But to understand where the genre came from, we need to look back almost forty years to two legendary Japanese creators: Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest) and Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy).
In the recent JRPG history book, Fight, Magic, Items: The History of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and the Rise of Japanese RPGs in the West, author Aidan Moher explores not just the origins of the genre but also how it evolved through the 20th and 21st centuries. This week, Jono and Hilary get the opportunity to interview Aidan about his new book, his own history with JRPGs, and where he thinks the video game book publishing industry will be going in the future!

On this episode of Random Encounter, our panel descends deep into Dracula's Castle to deliver their thoughts about the recent Castlevania Advance Collection.
Between 2001 and 2003, Konami released three Castlevania titles for the Game Boy Advance (Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Sorrow). These games revived the Symphony of the Night-style of 2D-exploration gameplay and cemented the term "Metroidvania" in our minds forever. In this episode, Jono and Mike get a chance to dive back into some fond GBA memories while Audra and Niki get to experience the Castlevania universe for the first time! Plus, we finally get a definitive answer to the question, is the double jump the best upgrade in video game history?

And finally, Jono dips into the spirit of the 90s with Kathy Rain: Director's Cut, a remake/remaster of the 2016 indie point-and-click adventure game.

On this episode of Random Encounter, we break into 2021! We've got a few panelists chatting about some of their favourite releases of last year. Alana's been trying to catch up with some popular hits and dove into the bizarre world of Paradies Killer, finding it the ideal murder mystery to listen to while studying. Neal revealed the indie action RPG Luminous Plume and we get into some thoughts on where this one could go. Then there's the Collection of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend that Zach's been plugging away at for the site, which are definitely dated, but it's a neat package to get into and test your nostalgia with. Finally, we ask this group just what it is they're most looking forward from the RPG genre in 2021. The usual side-chat and more for your listening pleasure!

Jono finally pried himself from Spelunky 2 long enough to try out Streets Of Kamurocho, a fun RPG-adjacent offering from SEGA. As for Greg, Torchlight III has been occupying his time. We take a look at the games discussed 10 years prior and then dive into the same topic Rob first posed: what do we all think about RPG elements creeping into other genres? All this, and a lot more, for you to listen to!

Everyone seems super pleased with Trails of Cold Steel, Rob (despite some rage here and there) appears to really like Darkest Dungeon, Derek loves on some Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam, Caitlin got a chance to play The Division, and, of course, we have to talk about all of the latest Fire Emblem Fates news that's been lighting up the interwebs. Featuring: Robert Steinman, Derek Heemsbergen, Caitlin Argyros and Robert Fenner Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
With 2015 firmly in the rearview mirror, it's time to think about everything we've seen over the past twelve months. Of course, this also gives us a chance to talk about what all we're looking forward to in 2016. Just how many Final Fantasies will we see? Is Zero Time Dilemma our most anticipated game? Wait, of course it is! Strap in and join the crew as we celebrate the New Year in style. Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink and Caitlin Argyros Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
We're back with our last regular episode of 2015, and of course we're going to talk about Xenoblade Chronicles X and The Old Hunters expansion for Bloodborne. Oh, and there's that whole Final Fantasy VII Remake thing that we kinda have to analyze too, huh? Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink, Derek Heemsbergen and Caitlin Argyros Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
Well, we definitely need to talk about Fallout 4, so take a break from playing to find out what the crew of Random Encounter thinks of Bethesda's latest. After that, Rob chats about his time with Danganronpa (and Derek yells at him for not trying it sooner), Caitlin talks about the latest changes to Final Fantasy XIV, and Stephen debates some Apollo Justice. Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink, Derek Heemsbergen and Caitlin Argyros Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
Well, we finally made it to 100 episodes. Take a second to breathe that in, folks. What better way to celebrate than to keep doing the same damn thing we've always done! Rob tries his best to keep calm while playing Wasteland 2 and Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition, Derek talks about his Tales of Zestiria experience and teenage angst in Life is Strange, Stephen gushes over the Ace Attorney trilogy, and Peter describes his thirst for (slime) blood in Dragon Quest Heroes. Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink, Derek Heemsbergen and Peter Triezenberg Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
Kept you waiting, huh? We certainly have a lot to talk about this week, starting with catching up on the games everyone's been playing. Rob got a chance to beat Witcher 3, Caitlin gushes over Until Dawn, Mike plugs another podcast with The Last Story, and Derek enjoyed some Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls. After all that, we dig into the Tokyo Game Show and try to contain our excitement. Featuring: Robert Steinman, Derek Heemsbergen, Caitlin Argyros and Mike Sollosi Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
Well, this might be one of the craziest episodes we've ever had. Not only is it a massive crew of podcasters this week, but we've also got an insane number of topics. Of course we have to talk about the latest Dragon Quest news and then we've also got updates on Divinity II, the latest Kickstarter controversies, the legalities of a Final Fantasy beat 'em up, and Stephen gets to gush about King's Quest so you'll all buy it! Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink, Derek Heemsbergen, Caitlin Argyros, Mike Sollosi and Jesse Woo Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
The summer calm gives our crew a chance to catch their breath and look at their backlog. Rob talks about the latest updates to The Witcher 3 and Diablo 3, Caitlin nearly persuades everyone to replay Final Fantasy Tactics, and Derek talks about betrayal and death in Lost Dimension. There's also a bit of Dragon Quest speculation during our news roundup, but that was before all of today's insanity. You better believe we will cover all of that on the next show! Featuring: Robert Steinman, Derek Heemsbergen and Caitlin Argyros Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
E3 is firmly in the rearview mirror, so now we can finally get back to business. Derek and Stephen gush about Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, Rob tries to convey the utter weirdness of Lisa: The Painful RPG, and then everyone loses their minds over the news we're getting another Zero Escape game (while Jesse makes the mistake of asking if he should give it a try). Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink, Derek Heemsbergen and Jesse Woo Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
Sorry to keep you waiting! E3 is behind us, and now the crew gets together to talk about all of the craziness of this year's show. Man, March is going to be crazy! The whole crew is filled with anticipation (hence the title), and it's proving rather difficult to keep their hype in check. Still, we have some cool stuff to talk about this week, including Rob's new Playstation 4, some off-topic debates, and Derek's journey into Atelier Shallie. Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink, and Derek Heemsbergen Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
Jeez, there are almost too many games to talk about this week. We've got Citizens of Earth, Criminal Girls, Darkest Dungeon, Ghost Song, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., and a little Brandish to keep you warm during this incredibly cold winter. Oh, and there was some kind of new trailer for a game that has everyone hyped. I think it was called Persona 5 or something. Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink, Derek Heemsbergen Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
Spoiler Warning! And now for something completely different. The podcast crew decided it was time to take a long hard look at narrative in RPGs and video games as a whole. We pretty much get lost talking about the importance of player choice, strong character interactions, and the interactive nature of the art form. There are some spoilers here and there, but we do our best to bring up the game beforehand so you can skip ahead as needed. Derek brings it home with news, including some pretty disappointing financials from Square-Enix. Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink, Derek Heemsbergen, Kyle E. Miller, Dave Yeager Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
We've got a weird one for y'all this week. With John catching a case of the Solid Snake Gravely Voice, the podcast ends of hijacked with tons of side topics and seemingly random discussions. We've also got a little preview of another potential retro episode, so be sure to let us know what you think! Featuring: Robert Steinman, Stephen Meyerink, Derek Heemsbergen Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
Y'all wanted more retro episodes, so we put together a brief discussion of System Shock 2 and its impact on the gaming world since its release nearly fourteen years ago. After that, you know we just have to talk about the big Playstation 4 announcement last week, and we've certainly got some rather divisive opinions among the group. Featuring: Robert Steinman, John, McCarroll, Stephen Meyerink, Derek Heemsbergen, Kyle E. Miller Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]

2012 has finally come to a close, and thankfully the Mayans weren't right and the world keeps turning. But before we start talking about 2013, join us for a look back at some of the major releases of last year with a bit more time and perspective on our side. It's the last episode of the year, and we decided to go out with a bang by inviting long time editor John Tucker to the podcast. He's got some Paper Mario to talk about, and then John, Derek and Stephen completely steal the show to gush about Crimson Shroud. There's quite a bit of news to finish out the year, however, including a story that Rob and Stephen have been DYING to talk about... We've also got Realms of Ancient Wars and Ragnarok Online to round out the first of the big Fall releases. Well, we actually made it to fifty episode. Bet no one saw that coming. But we have no room for a clip show with The Last Story, Darksiders 2, Guild Wars 2, and all sorts of news going on these days. We also have some fellow editors putting in brief appearances to talk about their favorite RPG memories (spoiler: lots of people like Chrono Trigger), and we hope to maybe continue with this in the future. Here's looking forward to fifty more episodes! Featuring: Robert Steinman, John McCarroll, Stephen Meyerink and Derek Heemsbergen Special Guests: Liz Maas, Kyle Miller Questions? Comments? We decided to get one more leisurely episode in before the craziness of the fourth quarter starts to take over. Dave leads off with some final thoughts on The Secret World, Rob fends off the zombie apocalypse (TM) while talking about the first two episodes of The Walking Dead, and John throws down with Persona 4: Arena. Dave also pulls double duty as our podcast economist and tries to make sense of all the stuff going on with The Old Republic and Zynga. Finally, we've got an interview with game designer Mike Zadorojny from ArenaNet about the final development stages and future of Guild Wars 2. The podcast crew continues to fight back the record setting drought with a focus on great gaming experience. Rob and John spent some time in The Secret World, and John also pulled double duty by partaking in some Rainbow Moon with resident gaming lover Stephen. The summer heat has kicked in, but that just means more time to stay in the air conditioning and play some great RPGs. Stephen comes armed after a harrowing experience with the Japanese beta of Phantasy Star Online 2 (keep in mind we didn't know about the US release when we recorded), while John brings the critters of Pokemon Conquest to destroy the armies of feudal Japan. Meanwhile, Rob's been playing some Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (way to stay current), and, of course, Zack brings the news, including the release announcement of Guild Wars 2. Another year, another E3 come and gone in the gaming world. While it may not have seemed like there were a lot of RPGs on display, our intrepid reporters scoured the show floor to bring you all of the latest info. From the first Skyrim expansion to a game in which a young child tries to kill people (seriously!), this year's expo had a wide range of titles to choose from. Looks like Hell has finally frozen over. Blizzard unleashed Diablo 3 a little over two weeks ago, and the podcast crew has been tearing through the armies of the Burning Hells with reckless abandon. What do they think about all of the connection issues? What about the auction house? Is the game even good? After that, the crew wades into a title that Rob can't pronounce or spell with Gungnir, and there's certainly some sad news to talk about following the closing of 38 Studios and Big Huge Games. Stay tuned after the regular show for an interview with Atlus' QA Lead Richard Rodrigues and PR Manager Aram Jabbari as they talk more about Gungnir with Editor-in-Chief John McCarroll. As part of the ArenaNet studio visit that took place one month ago, Rob was able to participate in two roundtable interviews on the upcoming Guild Wars 2. Unfortunately, we were unable to get you the interviews due to technical difficulties... until now! The first interview is with Lead Content Designer Colin Johanson and Lead Game Designer Eric Flannum, and is followed by an interview with ArenaNet President Mike O'Brien and Producer Chris Whiteside. There's a lot of interesting discussion in here, so grab a seat and listen up! Questions? Comments? Spare Potions? Email us: [email protected]
Ya know what's a good idea? Let's send the biggest MMO-hater on the site out to Seattle to check out Guild Wars 2. It may sound like a recipe for disaster, but Rob came back with a huge smile on his face and a desire to play more of the innovative title due out later this year. In addition, John found a surprising amount of quality listener mail, giving us the oppourtunity to hold our very first Q and A session! How freakin' sweet is that?! Zack brings it all home with his usual news roundup, including a special piece that's sure to make both Rob and Stephen very happy... It's spring time and allergy season has hit the podcast crew like a ton of bricks, but that won't stop us from talking about some great JRPG releases! We finally have Xenoblade in America as well as Tales of Graces f to satiate us during these sneeze filled months. We delve into spoilers from about the 37 minute mark until 1 hour 20 minutes in, so avoid that if you're worried about spoilers. But do come back! After John's journey through news, Atlus representatives Aram Jabbari and Scott Williams join us to talk about the soon to be released Game of Thrones RPG based on the works of George RR Martin. You can't say we don't listen to the fans. Wait, that double negative has me all confused now. Anywho, the podcast crew wades into the JRPG space this week with a look at Hyperdimension Neptunia MK2 and (one of Stephen's favorite games) Tales of the Abyss. The conversation ends up completely off track when Rob and John focus on what draws them into a video game. Zack returns from his college adventures to talk news, and the whole crew agrees that we should have probably trademarked the name Random Encounter. Oh well! Remember when the first quarter was a slow time of the year? Yeah, fat chance of us getting a break around here with these major releases! Final Fantasy 13-2 is here and ready to usher in the New Year with moogles, time travel, and the cast of Kingdom Hearts. Wait, what? We brought Derek back on the show because, well, he found every freakin' doodad in the game! That's dedication, folks! After that, we head straight into the fantasy realm of Amalur, as Stephen spent the better part of the week splitting the heads of various fae folk and raining death on the countryside. John brings it all together with news while Rob cries in the corner over the latest information on the release of Diablo 3. Square-Enix graced the US with the demo for Final Fantasy XIII-2, and it's up to the podcast crew to tear into this mammoth JRPG. Did the developers listen to the complaints from the original game? Will this sequel bring new and old fans to the fold? We may not have concrete answers, but we certainly have some initial thoughts. You also get to hear the beginnings of a retrospective look at the franchise that will (hopefully) take on a larger form down the line. John battles with the recent news as we also get a demo for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, The Old Republic receives a content update, and the death (rebirth?) of the infamous Fallout MMO sends ripples through the industry. Our trip through the frozen lands of Skyrim comes to a close with a few final thoughts on Bethesda's epic. But the latest Elder Scrolls title wasn't the only big game to come out in November. Over the years, RPGFan has tried to keep itself up with the times by adding new things such as a Twitter account, a Facebook page and... errr... that's about it actually. Ok, so maybe we haven't kept up with the times as much as we'd like to but rejoice because today marks a big step in RPGFan's history as we celebrate the launch of our first ever Podcast which we aptly named Random Encounter. Keep in mind that this could be considered a pilot, a test run, a trial, a beta version, well, you get the idea. We feel that the best way to improve our podcast is to have our readers listen to our trials and send us their comments, suggestions, praises, insults or whatever else they want to say about it and then we'll use that to try and improve it with every subsequent episode. For example, expect to eventually hear a theme song for our podcast. We're still trying to find our chemistry and we'll be trying out several editors over the coming weeks to try and find a definitive team for the podcast. We're probably looking to have a set team of perhaps 3 editors with a different guest editor every episode. We hope you enjoy it and send in your thoughts to Robert Steinman at [email protected] since he'll be the one in charge of going through all the suggestions and comments about the podcast.
