Grammy-nominated musician Grace Potter joins Maggie to talk about her latest album, Mother Road, which marks a turning point in her creative journey. Maggie and Grace discuss what it means to commit to a life in music, vulnerability in songwriting, and advocating for the women who have influenced their work. Grace talks about the videos she made for the new record, and shares the story of the filmmaking career she pursued which led her to her first band.
Back in summer 2021, Grace Potter took off on a solo cross-country road trip that would soon bring a life-saving reconnection with her most unbridled self. Heading out on Route 66 from her home in Topanga Canyon, the Vermont-born artist spent the coming weeks crashing in roadside motels and taking time each night to deliriously transcribe the song ideas she’d dreamed up behind the wheel, often scrawling those notes onto the backs of postcards and motel notepads. The result is Mother Road, an album that marks the start of a thrilling new era of Grace’s career.
Mother Road is available now.

In this bonus episode of Salute The Songbird, Maggie chats with indie musician Bre Kennedy backstage at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, where they were both performing. Maggie and Bre discuss what it feels like to be back and Bonnaroo after 3 consecutive cancellations, as well as back on the road. Bre discusses the introspection she did during and emerging out of the pandemic, and how she got herself back to writing new music.
Singer-songwriter Bre Kennedy creates music soaked in rich, timeless storytelling with innate pop sensibilities. In 2019, she self-released her Jealous of Birds EP, followed by 2020’s Twenty Something EP, with both title tracks landing on Spotify’s coveted New Music Friday playlist. She released her debut full-length album, Note To Self, in October 2021, which was inspired by her time alone in lockdown and after reading Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. At the end of 2021, Kennedy signed to Nettwerk Music Group. She is currently working on new music and will join Joy Oladokun on her Spring 2022 tour. She has cemented herself as an artist to watch and one of the brightest voices out of the New Nashville music scene.

Wanda Jackson is celebrated as the Queen of Rockabilly, one of the first women to break into the boys club of rock and roll. Discovered at the age of 14, she wasn’t afraid to step outside of the lines musically, and her original sound mixes up rhythm & blues with country & western. Wanda is Maggie’s guest on this week’s episode, and she tells Maggie about the early days of her career, what it was like to be one of the first women in rock and roll, and shares some of the invaluable lessons she’s learned along the way.
Wanda Jackson enjoyed a long and successful career singing country and gospel material, but her most ardent fans celebrate her as the Queen of Rockabilly, one of the first and finest female voices rock & roll ever produced. Jackson sang with a passion, fire, and spirit that set her apart from her peers, and tunes like "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad," "Fujiyama Mama," and "Let's Have a Party" sounded as powerful as anything delivered by her male contemporaries. She enjoyed lasting success when she shifted to country sounds in the 1960s, and her C&W sides would reveal the warmth and thoughtfulness of a major talent. 1960's Rockin' with Wanda! is a superb set of rockabilly performances, 2006's The Very Best of the Country Years is a well-curated sampling of her C&W work, and 2021's Encore found her full of fire at the age of 83.

Singer-songwriter Erin Rae joins Maggie on this episode to talk about her new album Lighten Up, which has been called “a timeless amalgam of classic pop, cosmic country and indie rock”. Erin tells Maggie about the inspiration behind the songs on the album, which capture newfound self awareness and offer commentary on some of the issues we’re currently grappling with as a society. Erin and Maggie discuss the recording process and what inspired the lush, Laurel Canyon-esque sound on the album, as well as her experience growing up in the South and the impact it has had on her career.
Nashville singer/songwriter Erin Rae and her group the Meanwhiles emerged in 2012 with a sound rooted in dreamy indie folk, Americana, and '70s pop/rock. Rae issued her minimalist solo debut, Putting on Airs, in 2018, followed in 2022 by the dynamic, retro-pop, and country-leaning Lighten Up.

Bassist Karina Rykman joined Marco Benevento's band as a replacement to Dave Dreiwitz (Ween /Joe Russo's Almost Dead) in 2016 and since then, has developed a permanent and powerful presence in the band, playing headlining shows, festival sets, and opening for bands such as Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and more. Karina is Maggie’s guest this week and the two discuss growing up in New York City, where she became obsessed with The Allman Brothers, what it means to have ‘broad musical ears’, and the wisdom she gained from a mentor that helps her deal with imposter syndrome.
Aside from her gigs with Benevento, Karina’s musical résumé has almost grown too large to keep track of, but includes highlights we’d be remiss to exclude: a performance on the Today Show with Julia Michaels, a now-famous soundcheck at Madison Square Garden with Phish, playing in the backing band (in front of Howard Stern and co. at Radio City Music Hall) on America’s Got Talent with a flame-spewing helmet on her head, gigs with the Everyone Orchestra alongside members of moe., The Disco Biscuits, Soulive, Robert Randolph, + many more) and finally, the formation of her own band.
Karina put out two singles in 2019: Plants and Elevator, as well as two more in 2020 (City Kids & Dirty South) – the songs have garnered six-figure streaming numbers + air time on Satellite radio. A few live highlights include opening for Khruangbin at The Capitol Theatre, playing moe.down and Hulaween, and a plethora of headlining shows for ravenous fans. The group has welcomed special guests including Nels Cline, Robert Walter, Skerik, + more. This is just the beginning for the young NYC-based bassist.

Jade Jackson and Aubrie Sellers make up the duo Jackson+Sellers, and they are Maggie's guests on this episode. Jade and Aubrie share stories about the making of their debut album, Breaking Point, and how they found their unexpected musical kinship after back-to-back sets at Americanafest. The duo discusses balancing their creative work with the pressures of the industry, recognizing when to step away from chaos, and the importance of having your voice heard.
Jackson+Sellers first crossed paths through back-to-back gigs at Americanafest in Nashville in 2019, a fleeting moment that eventually led to a deep friendship and a true recognition of kindred spirits. During the pandemic, they aligned for an inspiring creative partnership that has yielded one of the most compelling collaborative albums of the last decade. Breaking Point, their exceptional debut on ANTI- Records, establishes Jackson+Sellers as women who share an intuitive musical kinship and a rare ability to craft tight singular pop-rock tracks without losing sight of their songwriting selves. By shedding the identities pre-assigned to them by the music industry, Jackson+Sellers have fashioned an album reflective of their expansive musical interests, from ‘70s rock to indie pop to West Coast country.

In this episode of Salute the Songbird, Maggie is joined by Lake Street Dive artists Rachael Price and Bridget Kearney. The pair share the story of how they met and formed the band, the things that make them work so well together, and what they love about being women in the music industry.
As a band, Lake Street Dive epitomizes democracy in action: the group, expanded into a quintet since touring keyboardist Akie Bermiss officially joined in 2017, share writing and arrangement duties. Their personalities, skills, and wide-ranging taste in pop, rock, R&B, and jazz have long blended together to make an impressively cohesive sound, both sophisticated and playful, combining retro influences with contemporary attitude. On its most recent Nonesuch album, 2018’s Free Yourself Up, the band even produced the record itself.
