The term Sasquatch itself originates from the Coast Salish word Sésquac, meaning “wild man.” It was introduced to popular culture in the 1920s by J.W. Burns, a Canadian teacher who collected and documented First Nations' accounts of the creature. From there, Sasquatch slowly made its way into the cryptid lexicon, preceding the more famous moniker Bigfoot, which wouldn’t gain traction until the late 1950s.

The pursuit of unknown creatures isn’t new. In the mid-20th century, a new branch of study emerged—cryptozoology—dedicated to investigating creatures that exist on the fringes of scientific recognition. Figures like Bernard Heuvelmans, Ivan T. Sanderson, and Grover Krantz were instrumental in developing this field, applying scientific methods to analyze claims of mysterious creatures, including Sasquatch. Krantz, in particular, became one of the foremost defenders of Bigfoot’s potential existence, arguing that physical evidence—especially footprints—could not be easily dismissed.

The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) has meticulously cataloged thousands of encounters, compiling witness reports from across North America. From fleeting glimpses to prolonged close encounters, the database serves as one of the largest repositories of Bigfoot-related evidence. Patterns have emerged over time—frequent sightings in the Pacific Northwest, eerie vocalizations heard in dense forests, and even alleged physical interactions with the creature. But with this vast amount of anecdotal evidence, the question remains: 

Are these reports merely misidentifications, hoaxes, or something more?Tracks and the Debate Over Their AuthenticityFootprints have long been one of the most cited pieces of evidence in the search for Sasquatch. Our stories come straight from those who have seen the impossible and lived to tell the tale. Strap in as we explore three chilling encounters with Alaska’s mystery beasts—from an eerie roadside meeting with a Dogman, to the looming presence of the Urayuli, and the deep, dark waters where a sea monster may still be hiding.

Story #1: The Dogman of Matanuska Valley Our first story takes place on a lonely Alaskan highway late one October night in 1998. A woman named Melissa H. was driving home through the icy wilderness when she spotted something unusual in her headlights. At first, she thought it was a moose—common enough in these parts—but as she slowed down, she realized this was no ordinary animal. Standing tall on two legs, a wolf-like creature with massive claws and “spiked” fur loomed at the roadside. Its intelligent, glowing eyes locked onto her, and in that brief moment, she knew with absolute certainty—this thing was alive. Not a Halloween prop. Not a bear. Something else. Terrified, she gunned the gas, fishtailing on the ice, but never looking back. Was it a Dogman? A shapeshifter? Or just an exhausted mind playing tricks? Whatever she saw that night, she never forgot it.

Story #2: The Urayuli—Alaska’s Own Bigfoot Deep in the southwest corner of the state, near Lake Iliamna, another legend lurks. Called by many names—Arulataq, Bushman, Nant’ina—but most commonly known as the Urayuli, this towering figure is said to be 7 to 14 feet tall, covered in shaggy hair, and armed with freakishly long arms that nearly reach its ankles. Local stories speak of it stealing livestock, raiding campsites, and even swimming through the icy Alaskan waters. While similar to the classic Sasquatch, its eerie glowing red eyes and its ability to vanish without a trace set it apart. In 1982, a hunting guide snapped a blurry photograph of a massive humanoid silhouette standing atop a ridge near Dillingham. Could it have been the Urayuli, watching the land it has called home for centuries?
Story #3: The Kodiak Island Sea Monster Alaska’s mysteries don’t just walk the land—they also swim beneath its frigid waves. In 1969, a fishing crew scanning the ocean floor off Kodiak Island made a shocking discovery—a sonar reading of a 200-foot-long creature lying at the bottom of the sea. Its shape? Unmistakably dinosaur-like, with a long neck and fins. Then, in the summer of 1971, a group of fishermen reported seeing a grayish, 30-foot-long beast with a horse-like head swimming near their skiff. One crew member fired a rifle at it, but the creature dived beneath their boat and resurfaced on the other side. And in 2002, a fishing vessel in Uganik Bay had a terrifying close encounter when a massive neck and head emerged from the depths, only to disappear moments later. The following summer, something rammed their boat from below with enough force to nearly knock a man overboard. No whales were in the area. Whatever it was, it was big.

Are these encounters proof of ancient creatures, cryptid legends, or something more supernatural? From the shadows of the forests to the icy depths of the sea, Alaska holds mysteries as old as time itself. The brothers, who had to contend with the constant challenges of transporting materials and the dangers of the wilderness, encountered a grizzly bear and heard strange whooping sounds near their camp. One day, while Jake was alone, he witnessed and tried to photograph an unknown bipedal creature but failed. Their tools were mysteriously scattered, leading to an early retreat advised by their pilot. They returned two years later to find things relatively untouched but found evidence of a large, nest-like structure. Their intermittent returns have revealed further mysterious damage to their cabin, adding to the intrigue.

This is the remastered version of my interview with Todd Neiss from episode 24 that aired back on May 14, 2021. Todd is a long time investigator with tons of field experience and some amazing encounters to share with us on the show tonight. He is also the organizer of the Beachfoot invite only yearly event, that hosts The Who’s Who of the Bigfoot world. Todd had his first sighting in the 90’s while conducting explosive maneuvers with the military. Bigfoot witness-turned-researcher, Todd M. Neiss has been an active investigator for over 28 years. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, he grew up hearing of these legendary creatures, alternately known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch, but gave it little credibility beyond that of a good old-fashioned campfire tale designed to frighten young campers. All of that changed for Todd in the spring of 1993.

As a Sergeant in the Army's 1249th Combat Engineer Battalion, he came face to face with, not one, but three of the elusive giants in the temperate rain forest of Oregon's Coast Range while conducting high-explosives training. His sighting was independently corroborated by three fellow soldiers who also witnessed these creatures.

Since that fateful day, Neiss has conducted numerous investigations including several long-term expeditions in the Coastal, Cascade and Blue Mountain Ranges of Oregon & Washington, as well as Northern California, Arizona, Alaska, Nebraska and British Columbia. Todd believes that, in the tradition of Jane Goodall, Biruté Galdikas and Diane Fossey, the best way to obtain credible evidence of the existence of these fascinating beings is to insert a small research team into the heart of prime Bigfoot habitat for an extended period of time; ideally for 45 to 60-day rotations. In doing so, he hopes to acclimatize the creatures to their presence and eventually overcome their inherent apprehension of humans.

It is his opinion that these creatures possess a relatively high IQ in comparison to recognized great apes. Neiss’ current theory focuses on that presumed intelligence which he believes fosters an irresistible sense of curiosity...a curiosity which Neiss intends to exploit. By presenting a variety of baits as well as an array of unconventional, non-threatening lures within a pre-designated area, he hopes to successfully collect irrefutable evidence of these creature’s existence. "It is my goal to entice these animals by presenting a non-threatening posture and piquing their curiosity, thereby luring them into a specified area where irrefutable evidence can then be obtained," says Neiss. Once the creatures are officially recognized, his ultimate goal is to establish a management program to ensure their perpetual existence for future generations to appreciate.

Over the years, his research has garnered him international attention. He has been the subject of numerous documentaries and TV programs from the US and Canada to the UK and Germany. He has been featured on such programs as: Unsolved Mysteries, Encounters, To the Ends of the Earth, The UnXpected and has been featured on the Discovery Channel, Travel Channel and National Geographic. He has also appeared on numerous radio & TV talk shows, local newscasts and newspapers. He is currently producing a documentary about his recent expedition in the uninhabited Broughton Archipelago of British Columbia called “Operation: Sea Monkey” completed on October 1st, 2016.

He has been a featured speaker at several colleges and universities, and was a regular contributor to the Annual Sasquatch Symposium series held in British Columbia, Canada from 1996 through 1999. Neiss has instructed classes on Bigfoot for the Audubon Society as well as the Campfire Boys & Girls Society; the former involving both classroom and field work and culminating with an overnight working camp in the "Dark Divide" of Washington State's Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Recently he instructed a class for the Scappoose Middle School’s outdoor school.

Most recently, Neiss was a featured for the History Channel’s “The UnXplained” with William Shatner on August 21, 2020. It will air sometime in late November.

Todd is the host of the annual, invitation-only gathering of international Bigfoot researchers called “Beachfoot.” This retreat is held every summer in Oregon’s temperate Coast Range. This unique event has drawn noted researchers from as far away as Australia, Russia, England, Canada, New Zeeland and nearly every state in the U.S. This year will mark their 14th anniversary of the event.

Neiss co-founded the American Primate Conservancy with his wife, Diane Stocking Neiss five years ago. The conservancy was granted a “Domestic Non-Profit Corporation” status by the state of Oregon On October 15, 2015. Their primary mission is “the discovery, knowledge, research, recognition, and protection of the Sasquatch.” The organization has been quietly organizing expeditions, conducting investigations, and participating in multi-media and public speaking engagements in an effort to promote their agenda. They have been actively pursuing grants, donations, sponsorships and volunteers for ongoing research projects.

Ultimately, they plan to establish a world-class “Bigfoot Interpretive Center” in the Pacific Northwest as a showcase for promoting public awareness and education regarding these amazing creatures. The facility would include: an interactive museum, auditorium/conference center, art gallery, multi-media studio, classrooms, library, forensics laboratory, nature walk and outdoor amphitheater.

A veteran of the Iraq War, Neiss recently retired with meritorious honors from the U.S. Army; where he served for over 21 years.

When not working on the project, writing, or conducting research, Todd enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking and camping throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Todd and his wife currently live near Mount Hood, 50 miles east of Portland, Oregon. Nestled in the beautiful Cascaded Mountains, the “Chateau de Squatch” is in an ideal location for which to conduct their research and serves as the temporary headquarters for the conservancy.

The American Primate Conservancy has a website (www.americanprimate.org) which provides information about the Conservancy, projects past and present, theories, and more.
