Self-cherishing and cherishing others Contemplate how self-cherishing (selfishness/narcissism) isthe cause of great suffering. That by believing that our own needs and happiness are more important than the needs and happiness of others, we act and behave in ways that create suffering for others and ourselves, in the form of greed, selfishness, hatred, anger, and envy, which alienates us from others. Contemplate how cherishing others (altruism) is the cause ofgenuine happiness. That by believing that all of our needs and happiness are interdependent, we act and behave in ways that create happiness for all, in the form of care, love, compassion, friendship, and affection, which builds wholesome relationships and community.
