When submarines were first developed, they had an awful reputation, and for good reason. There had been many accidents and many sailors whose graves were on the bottom of the ocean. So much so that the submarine service had earned the nickname the coffin service. In 1939, one of the worst of these incidents would add to this reputation. This is that horrifying story.

In 1933 a Russian cargo ship was making a groundbreaking trip across northern russia, through the arctic, in hopes of establishing a permanent trade route known as the northeast passage. Like so many ships before, it got stuck in the increasingly thick winter ice and was trapped for months at the mercy of the ocean currents below. Then, one day in February, there was a deep groaning from the ship’s hull. Immediately afterward, the captain yelled for everyone to abandon the ship. This is the story of the maiden voyage of the SS Chelyuskin.

On July 6th, 1940, a man was fishing on a Lake infamous in the mountains of Washington state. As he drifted along in his boat, he saw some sort of figure in the water. When he got closer, it looked to be something wrapped in a blanket. Then, when he reached in to grab whatever it was, he immediately recoiled in horror. What he just felt was unmistakably a human limb. These are the creepy disappearances and legends around Lake Crescent.

In October of 1628, a trade ship set sail from the Netherlands with gold and gems to be traded for spices in Indonesia. Unbeknownst to the captain, the danger of the voyage was not from the storms and rough waters they’d encounter but instead something sinister brewing within the ship itself. In the end, this would result in the loss of the majority of the over 300 passengers, but even worse than that, the prolonged suffering of many of the survivors. This is Clipperton Island. It is just a small barren ring of coral in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the late 19th century, countries fought for ownership of it for a rare resource the island possessed. To stake their own claim, Mexico sent several families to colonize it, and supplies were regularly sent to keep them alive. Horrifyingly, at some point, these crucial supplies stopped coming, and once it was clear they’d been abandoned, one of theses inhabitants revealed himself as a true monster. And this didn’t have to do with a lack of food. This is their horrifying story.

In 1788, the British began sending prisoners to Australia to alleviate their overcrowded prisons and as part of their strategy to start colonizing the land. Many of these men were not charged with serious offenses, and so after their sentence would be released and begin a new life. Other prisoners would only continue to misbehave, and the worst of these would be sent to the remote and brutal prison colonies in Tasmania. And the worst of these colonies was the Sarah Island Prison where the conditions and punishments were truly horrific. So much so that the prisoners would make frequent escape attempts. Unfortunately, those who were successful were then faced with the harsh reality of the wild and uninhabited Tasmanian outback. And the things they had to do to survive here were perhaps more horrific than the prison itself.

There is a little body of water in the city of Santa Rosa. On the surface, it’s just an unassuming pond in the middle of the desert in New Mexico. At the bottom, though, there is a large metal grate over the entrance to a massive underwater cavern. Importantly, this grate wasn’t always there, and I think we all know that a metal grate is only installed for one reason. So, in this video, we’re going to look at the horrifying incidents that led to this grate being installed, and what might happen, if you were to deliberately bypass it. Before we get into it, I want to give a serious claustrophobia warning for this one. And as always, viewer discretion is advised.

In January of 1902, to prepare for battles in cold and mountainous climates, the Japanese Imperial Army sent 210 men on a training exercise across the Hakkoda Mountains in the middle of winter. This would go on to be the single deadliest mountaineering disaster in all of recorded history. This is the story of the Hakkoda Mountains Disaster.
