Scottish Watches Podcast #627 : GPHG Wins, Gerald Genta and The Brand New IWC Ingenieur

Welcome to the Scottish Watches Podcast Episode 627! We are happy to welcome back to the show David Seyffer, IWC’s Museum Director, as the brand is introducing a blue dial variant of their updated Ingeneur collection, which made its debut at Watches and Wonders 2023. We are  not just here to tell you the dial is now blue. We explore the pre Gerald Genta genecis of this collection and its connection to the Mark XI’s anti-magnetic properties. How then, in the 70s, Genta entered the picture to create another stainless steel integrated bracelet icon and the impact of reviving this icon today. But, IWC isn’t just their stainless steel sports watch, it wasn’t even their famed Pilot’s watch collection that made the biggest noise this year but the Portugueser, whose achievements with the Eternal Calendar were recognized with the Aiguille d’Or  award at GPHG.

IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar – It’s insane that the caliber 52640’s moon phase will stay accurate for 45 million years! That overshadows the also impressive accuracy of the secular perpetual calendar, which only needs adjusting in the year 3999! The moon phase accuracy is due to a reduction gear train using three intermediate wheels, the result of 22 trillion computer simulations that resulted in that successful combination. For the administrative year to be as close as possible to the solar year we have leap years every 4 years. The exception to this is during secular years, like 2100, when even though it is a leap year, February has 28 days. This is what Kurt Klaus’ module does for the Portugieser Perpetual Calendars. Perpetual Calendars account for that. But with secular years divisible by 400, like 2400, that rule does not apply so the secular calendar will need adjusting. IWC achieves “Eternity” with a 400-year gear that will skip 3 leap years over four centuries. Two gears were added to the perpetual calendar gear train. One of the gears completes a rotation every 400 years with its three indentations, enabling the skipping of the 3 leap years. This mechanism can be seen through the sapphire display at 4. Consider our minds blown that this much information can be programmed mechanically in such minuscule components!
