Temperance bounced down the stairs with a rare smile, she was dressed in a draped top and harem pants gathered at the ankle, with matching sequined slippers. her platinum hair was up in a bun, held in place not with the decorative comb her mother had bought her, but a simple wooden pencil. She spent all day getting her outfit right, and the pencil with the name facing outward at just the correct angle took most of that time. Teddy Duncan stood in the Duncan’s Union headquarters overlooking the sunken district of The Stix, the working class neighborhood under the Lethe river. A grey late morning with a clear view out his window to the rail lines and steam cranes on the docks. Seagulls circling, the boat nets hauled with giant hooks, hoists pulling crates onto train car platforms roped down for the journey to the warehouses. Foreman shouting to crews echoed over the rooftops with leaky water towers and the odd pigeon coop.

The killer had left letters with the bodies that somehow made it to the Lantern Paper and were published. The killer, calling themselves The Rattletrap, claimed to be from the Stix and was moving uptown to kill the wealthy while taunting them.

The three Duncan brothers - Teddy, Remy, and Lenny found themselves in an empty room with a dirt floor, under the main stairs just below street level. Their parents had left in the night, while the boys slept on a small, worn rug. The three of them under the age of six, huddled on a crate together in the damp cold. They had rumbling bellies and no shoes, but an empty room that was paid through the end of the month.

Millie Minerva had taken over the duties of brewing the crabapple cider from her fasting sister Mercy, the shame eater. It was sweet with a sharp tang that woke up the tongue and provided a lovely light buzz like a spring breeze. Mercy Minvera, a fasting girl, had quickly been monikered The Shame Eater for her ability to pull the shame from people and provide relief with her touch. The Minerva sisters - enterprising young girls, started selling cider, and homemade soaps to those standing in line waiting for a visit with Mercy. Any guilt about exploiting their sister's ability slowly washed away with the dreams of buying the neighboring plots of land and re-establishing the Minerva family crabapple orchards.

The brownstone mansions of Park Row were impressive in their lavishness and the seeping bright colors of pinks and lavenders and shades of indigo. The Bridewell House sat at the end of the lane, trying to hide its institutional shape with strategically placed elm and red oak trees and a high, manicured hedge. The Brickwork that formed the bulk of the structure was a deep, rich red, and its thick paned windows held with iron latches seemed to ready for troubled spirits that might have the inclination to flee.

Miss Suitor, Charity.. The results were horrific, we even pulled the sketch artist out of the tunnel as it was sheets of burnt carnage. The Old Oak sat not far from the edge of the road and loomed over a smooth green field that stretched flat into a small grove on the horizon. That old oak, like the last of an ancient race, its long branch tendrils snaking out, creating a cover that could have been an empire to itself and held the autumn mist as it rolled the field as if embracing a plume of smoke within its arms to dew the leaves and whisper secrets into each dark knot that lead down to the mossy earth imps that listened from deep within the deadfall.

Jules pointed to a big, bright sign hand-painted with a map illustrating the entire park - from the entrance the path lead them through the new innovation exhibitions, down to the sideshow and acrobatic tents and food midway, past the funhouse then on closer to the water with the mermaid water show and diving tank and then the imposing face peeler roller coaster that swung out over the water. Then past a floating barge with a boxing ring exhibition sponsored by Duncan’s Matches And then at the end of the pier, a giant aeronautical balloon made of canvas in bright colors netted and tethered at the pier side for a lucky few random raffle winners to ascend into the clouds at dusk to see the expanse of the city, the illuminated Vega’s light wheel and Celestial park in all of its radiant brilliance.

Three little girls had been chased to the basement, by an old musical feind, but now having crept back up the stairs, they peered through a crack and realized their troubles had tripled.

Enocke Green, the runaway boy was somewhere in the house, but the three girls. Temperance, Antigone, and Masie were calming in the temporary safety of the dark stairwell, lit only by matchlight.
Temperance and Antigone couldn't hear the house scream, but helped Masie limp along to compensate for her vertigo.

The Show must go on. Max and company spared the reputation of Madame Mustaches, Max pre-sold tickets to real opening of Pharaoh and booked in an entire season of acts to the stage, including a new magician's act featuring a spirit cabinet. Bennet interrogated Rudy Valerio at Needle street with some of the other inspectors. Hope’s fingers wrapped around Charity’s neck, her thumbs pressing hard on her trachea. Charity had just slipped from consciousness just behind the curtain in the dark stage of the variety theater Madame Mustache’s. The audience had breached the doors, slowly streaming in and taking their seats. The house a murmur of rumors of the murder that had taken place on that very stage the night before. One slight tug on the curtain rope and the audience would be witnessing the second murder on that very spot and open the show to the one night only Murder Follies.
