The powers that be from Lumon have made a huge announcement. Er, umm...maybe it's the Powers that be at Red Hour/AppleTV+. Whoever it is, they've graced us with a release date. Sure, it's next year and it means there is, technically, a three-year difference between the premier of S1 and the premier of S2. Admittedly, some folks have left the fold, claiming the show is good, but this is far too long to wait for more content. The rest of us, the True Believers, have been willing to hang around for more. It's just too GOOD, isn't it?

So, here's a quick...and I do mean QUICK...like four SECONDS...look at some new stuff coming in the Second Season. We'll even meet one of the new cast members...briefly. 

Spoilers are everywhere. We'll be discussing possible storylines for S2 along with whatever minimal reveals we might find in this trailer. If you're trying to remain totally spoiler-free for S2, you will want to tread lightly here.

This week, we're beginning a voyage into the mind....of John Malkovich. It's time to break down the notorious and infamous "Being John Malkovich" from 1999. Dan Erickson has mentioned this as one of his inspirations while creating "Severance." It's easy to see the questions about 'self' and who is in control raised by this movie. John Malkovich also has literal 'innies' who inhabit his consciousness...but only for fifteen minutes.

This time, in Part One, we're going to meet a 'happy' couple: Craig and Lotte Schwartz. She works at a pet store, he's a professional puppeteer. Stop snickering! He's devoted to his craft, and he's REALLY good at it...he's just not always the most appropriate. We see Craig get punched in the face thanks to the randy antics of his 12th Century puppets.

Due to the current "wintry economic climate" Craig agrees he should go find a job...and not necessarily as a puppeteer.  Craig finds LesterCorp, a professional file management service. Craig's incredibly strong marionette fingers make him great when it comes to high-speed precision filing. It's while working at LesterCorp that Craig both meets the alluring Maxine and discovers a portal into the head and consciousness of actor John Malkovich.

This time we are going to meet the gang and get hired at LesterCorp. We'll follow things in Part One right up to the point where Craig discovers the portal. Well, better late than never, right Refiner?? This week, "Severed: Origins" is finally taking some time to break down the weird little document Red Hour released a month after the premier of the show: "The Lexington Letter". It was presented as a whistleblower letter written by a Severed Employee working at the Topeka, KS location of Lumon Industries. It contained a few clues, but it was REALLY another attempt on the part of the producers to explain the Severance Procedure. They were just sure the viewing public was too dumb to figure it out (TV Execs have traditionally believed they are smarter than the average population...this would be why most of TV is SO dumb.)

This piece was rushed. Several folks who read it early on were quick to comment how poorly written it was compared to the series. It's true, and we're going to get into the logic holes, the HUGE continuity errors and the impossible timeline. There are a few details and reveals...but they are buried amidst a LOT of badly constructed narrative.

If you've been with me this far, you know I LOVE "Severance." Don't be shocked, but I DON'T love the "Lexington Letter." I've tried to reign in the snark, but it's upsetting to see such a poorly conceived and badly written creative piece tied to such a cool show.  Verbal slaps about the authors' head and shoulders were unavoidable. -Allen S.

This time, we hit the water for some fishing...and falling in love...and falling overboard. It's a very eventful trip. Our look at those things that inspired Dan Erickson as he was creating 'Severance' continues!! This time out, we're breaking down the 1990 fairy-tale Rom-com "Joe vs. The Volcano." It stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in their FIRST movie together! It was also written and directed by Oscar and Pulitzer prize-winning writer, John Patrick Shanley. With a pedigree like that, you'd think it would be a better movie! Then again, maybe it's just misunderstood. We're going to delve deeply into it to find out which.

This is Part ONE. We get about halfway through the movie. Be watching for Part TWO when we will finish it up with a big plunge into a Volcano (and, yes, SPOILERS for 'Joe vs. The Volcano!).

IT'S TIME TO END THIS THING, REFINERS!!
Our three part "Truman Show" Origins Odyssey is about to come to an end. Truman's freakout is in full bloom. He crossed the bridge!! (This may or may not mean he has fixed his inner soul).  There's a nuclear plant meltdown, a forest fire and a fugitive escapee in the woods...and that's all in the first 20 minutes of this final Opus.

Meryl must bid us a fond farewell...but don't worry. Christof has found another young actress willing to sleep with the star of the show. We'll meet her, too! 

Oh, and yes, we'll finally have a chance to really sit down with Christof, the creator of "The Truman Show" and the gang in the Lunar Room.  

Truman may have given up on trying to escape...or, maybe, it's his most stunning plot yet!! There comes a time when problems can't be fixed with a beer...but, until that time, we've got Marlon on stand-by with a sixer of Penn Pavel's.

So, if you're ready, it's time to stroll the lovely streets of Seahaven for the final time.

It's time for more "Severed: Origins" as we continue to break down the 1998 Jim Carrey classic, "The Truman Show."

I'm making a long winter meal out of this one, gang. We start this segment by meeting Truman's mother. The lovely Holland Taylor is stellar as "Mom." We hang out with Truman as he's watching some of the offerings on Seahaven's TV channel. 

Truman hears some weirdness on the radio and sees a LOT of weirdness in a building elevator. He follows both Meryl and Marlon to work then decides he HAS to get off the island. Flights are a month out (it's the busy season!) and the bus is smoking. Mr. Burbank figures he'll drive his way off the island. 

Don't miss out, Refiners!! Following Truman around Seahaven is the most fun you can have in single digit temps!! Is it going to take me ten hours to get through this two-hour movie?? Find out, NEXT TIME...but for now, enjoy this one.

The 'Severed' ORIGINS Series continues with a look at a fun an interesting movie from 1998. This time out, we take on "The Truman Show" directed by Peter Weir and Starring Jim Carrey, Ed Harris and Laura Linney.

In this installment, we learn about the long and twisting path this movie took when it came to getting both a director and a script. We'll actually hit 'play' and fire it up. That's when we'll meet Christof, Louis and Hannah. Although Truman doesn't know Christof at all and he thinks Hannah's name is Meryl and Louis' name is Marlon. It's a weird existence on Seahaven...especially if your name is Truman.

This is one of the movies that inspired Dan Erickson as he was creating "Severance." It's easy to see how Truman is the perpetual innie. Christof is like a distant Jame Eagan, running the show without his charge even knowing it.

It's a fun, well-made, interesting movie that is still talked about in media ethics classes. Get ready to hit 'play', Refiner. We're headed to Seahaven!!

This week, the "Severed: Origins" series is taking a look at a masterpiece created by a French Madman. His name is Jacques Tati and the film we'll be discussing is his 1967 opus "Play Time." "Play Time" is like no film you've ever seen. We'll get into just exactly why it's so different. Since it is so different, I can't even break it down the way I would normally review a movie. I'll explain, and we'll get into it...kinda.

Tati doesn't believe much in plot, character or close-ups. How is it possible to create a movie without those things? Oh, Tati manages...to the point what he created has been called by some the greatest movie ever made. It's a weird little sideshow well worth examining. Don't miss "Play Time" as a part of "Severed: Origins."

If you happen to hang out in the SeveranceAppleTVPlus sub on Reddit, you may have seen an "ABC" list being posted for the past few weeks. A dedicated Redditor named "Milchicksgirl" really put a lot of great work into compiling this list...and a lot of folks really got into it!! 

After reviewing the finished list, I noticed nearly all of the items listed are audio quotes from the show. I pulled a few...then a few more...until I decided I really needed to do something with these pulled quotes!!

This week, we're starting the breakdown of a 1999 comedy that was a huge influence on Dan Erickson and his creation of "Severance". It's the hilarious "Office Space" from Mike Judge. We'll get deep into the inner workings of Initech, what it can mean if you improperly cover a TPS report and just how bad a boss COULD be. It may not be the Severed Floor...but you'd have to agree, it's a pretty f-ed up way to make a living.

Not only was "Office Space" an inspiration...we even uncover the log-line for "Severance." This movie may have been more like a guide to young Daniel. So, Refiners, it's time to plug in and unwind. You've found yourself at the third and final installment of the Severed: Origins look at the 1999 blockbuster "The Matrix." It was one of those things that inspired Dan Erickson in the creation of "Severance."

When we last left Morpheus and the crew, they were just preparing to jump into the Matrix and introduce Neo to the Oracle. 

This time out, we meet the Oracle, Morpheus gets abducted by Agent Smith, Neo attacks a skyscraper with a helicopter...and a mini-gun. Cypher goes Rogue, Mouse breaks out the big guns and we discover if Neo is really "The One" or if it's all just a bunch of hype.

Strap in refiners...Sentinels are coming, but we've got Neo on our side. Enjoy this final installment as we continue to go deep with "Severed: Origins - The Matrix."

Last time we gathered, we were just getting into the 1999 sci-fi classic "The Matrix." It's about time to meet Morpheus. WELCOME BACK, REFINERS! TIME FOR MORE "ORIGINS"...
It's been a long, hot summer on the picket line for both WGA and SAG-AFTRA members. Nothing is moving so far in the way of negotiations or agreements. Instead of sitting around bored down here on the Severed Floor, I've started to take a look at those things that influenced Dan Erickson as he was creating "Severance." I'm calling it the "Severed: Origins" Series. Hey, it may not be Season Two, but it's better than listening to Dylan tell us about his caricatures again.

This time out on "Origins", we begin our epic breakdown of the 1999 sci-fi masterpiece "The Matrix". We will be ripping this baby apart in intimate detail. We came really close to breaking down "Dark City'...but then I watched "Dark City." Details in the podcast.

"The Matrix" was a philosophical and cultural phenomenon...or maybe it was nothing more than a high-minded shoot-em-up (according to Roger Ebert). Wherever you fall on the "Matrix" importance continuum, we can all agree Keanu was cool and the effects were AWESOME! Here...have a Blue Pill 'n Chill. It's time to go find that spoon.

It's loaded with Big Hair, Big Plates of Food and some Big Platitudes about corporate Steak House chain 'Sizzler.' Dan Erickson has talked about it in interviews as being an inspiration for "Severance." What is it? Where did it come from? How did the not-quite-40-year-old DE come across this relic from 1991?? Since the WGA continues to strike for the rights of our beleaguered writers, I decided we needed something to keep us busy between now and S2. Enter the "Origins" series from "Severed"!! It's a deep-dive look at those things that INSPIRED the creation of "Severance"! The logic goes like this: if you like the end result, you'll probably like what went into it, right??

This time out, we're going DEEP into the 1985 Terry Gilliam movie, "Brazil." It's a personal fave of mine, and one of the influences cited by Dan Erickson regarding the creation of "Severance." WELCOME, REFINERS, TO A SPECIAL "ORIGINS" EDITION OF "SEVERED"!
As the WGA strike grinds on, I decided to look into some of the things that have been cited by Dan Erickson as inspiration for "Severance." I'm calling this the Severance 'Origins' series. Look for it in the regular 'Severed' Podcast feed.

Philip K. Dick's work is often referenced as heavily influential to 'Severance'...some even think the relief statue in the Lumon Atrium is an homage to PKD. I don't know if I would go that far, but I'm certainly in awe of Mr. Dick's ideas and have been a fan ever since "Bladerunner."

Today we're going to have a look at a story called "Paycheck" by Philip K. Dick. Dan Erickson has mentioned it several times in interviews as being an inspiration for "Severance." It was originally written in 1952. It was then adapted and made into a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster in 2003. It didn't bust any blocks...but it did hang onto some of the more important ideas found in Dick's original story.

So, Refiners, as you've probably figured out...I don't do a lot of interviews. It's not that I don't like doing them, I just don't know anyone. PLUS, I've been really busy breaking down every episode second-by-second. I didn't have a lot of extra time to be tracking down actors and others.

I was pleasantly surprised to receive a note from a guy named Marc Geller telling me how much he was enjoying the podcast. Yeah, ha-ha...I get it...he's using the same name as the guy who plays Kier. Very clever! Only, turns out...this really WAS the guy playing Kier!! 

Marc was doing a play in Washington D.C. the first part of this year. Marc was away from home, away from his family and bored when he wasn't on stage. He happened to come across the "Severed" podcast during his downtime. Since he was a part of "Severance" he was, of course, interested in the topic. He really enjoyed the podcast and that's how I wound up with the note. 

There was no way I was going to let the guy who plays Kier send me e-mail and NOT talk about the show! We had to work around his schedule...and an extension to the D.C. play...but we were able to get together and discuss The Brilliant One. I hope you enjoy it!!

As a BONUS, I also was contacted by a refiner who worked on the "Severance" support team at York Studios in the Bronx. She was trying to give me a wrap gift, I wouldn't let her off the hook until she talked to me about doing COVID support at York. The second half of today's show is my discussion with podcast listener and former "Severance" support staffer Katherine Shea.

It's a relaxed one today, Refiners. We'll pull out the red rubber ball and have a few deviled eggs. The quarter turned out well...you deserve this!!

Sorry to have cut things short on you last time. The party continues!! This time out, Irv discovers outie-Burt is retiring...which means innie-Burt dies.

Suddenly, being on the severed floor doesn't feel like all that much fun anymore. Knowing about the Overtime Contingency and finding the magical keycard leads Helly to a plan. What if they could do this to THEMSELVES? What if THEY could all wake up OUT THERE?? This is some radical and decidedly 'non-Kier' thinking. 

Speaking of things happening "Out There" Alexa is back...but it doesn't go well. It seems to, but then it doesn't. Then it REALLY doesn't. Seeing what Mark saw at Ganz College has left him a bit stymied. 

We also experience the grand-daddy of all 'Severance' reveals in the final few seconds of this one. What are you waiting for, refiners? Get back on that elevator and push 'play'!! We've got more 'Defiant Jazz' we need to listen to!!

Things are happening fast in the land of the Severed Souls. Right up front we witness a brutal murder. Mark didn't do it, but he was there. Even though Mark asked repeatedly, we're not EXACTLY sure who did it...but I'm betting her name is Reghabi. 

And the wages of sin are...a keycard. Not just any keycard, this is Doug Graner's keycard. It opens everything on the Severed Floor and WITHOUT any record of who was using it. Hmm...wonder if any workers down on the Severed Floor might have a use for something like that?? Outie-Mark decides to stick it in his pocket, just in case. 

Elsewhere, Innie-Dylan is haunted by the brief few seconds he had with his Outie's SON! There's no going back from something like that. 

The MDE gets rolling but then...oh, I'm sorry refiners, but I had a management issue that required my attention. There's still plenty for you to process in this PART ONE of "Defiant Jazz." Now push 'play' and get on the elevator!!

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER FILE...
You've once again found yourself on the severed floor. So glad your outie decided to bring you back!

We left last time just as Helly R. was stuck on the severed elevator. She was trying to sneak a two word postit note to the surface. The two words: I Quit. Helly is not adjusting quite as quickly to severed existence as everyone had hoped. She's still fighting it...HARD. Mark S. gallantly steps in and says its "on him." This is code for "I'll go to the Break Room in her place." Yes, Refiners...we're going to the Break Room. Not all the way IN, mind you...but we get close.

We do get a chance to leave work this time. Mark S. has a date! I wish I could report it went well...but it didn't. Mark's drinking is getting worse. Having loudmouths like the Whole Mind Collective around is bound to give him a headache. The resulting discussion in the street sends Mark home alone.

The BIG News this time: Irv meets Burt...Mark goes to meet Petey and Helly meets her first set of refinable numbers. Don't touch that file, Refiners...it's time to open "Half Loop-Pt2."

WELCOME BACK, REFINERS!! THE WORK IS MYSTERIOUS...AND IT CONTINUES...
You're back! Everytime you find yourself here, it's because you decided to come back. If you remember last time, we left Mark on the Severed Floor just as he was given the title of "Department Chief" in MDR. His good buddy Petey is no longer with the company. No explanation was given. Mark is upset about it...but what are ya gonna do?

We'll join Mark and Irv on the other side of the glass for that oh-so-cringy intake interview. What we saw last time did not go well...and, surprise, surprise...it doesn't get any better. After it's explained to her where she is, Helly's going to discover some hard truths about being an innie.

We'll also be leaving work with Outie-Mark. His outie life is somewhat depressing. His sister is sweet, but his brother-in-law is WEIRD with a capitol "R" for "Ricken".  We'll be joining the gang for a unique dinner party...DON'T come hungry.

We're also going to meet the missing Petey and man, does he have some stuff to tell!! There's a ton happening, refiners!! Grab a cup of bold, dark Rwandan Coffee, fire up your workstation and let's re-open the file 'Good News About Hell' !!
