In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes ten through twelve of A Sign of Affection! In episode ten, Itsuomi’s romantic nature and respect for Yuki and her anxiety around their new relationship sets a sweet tone for the episode and a beautiful example for partners everywhere. Madoka helps Yuki get a job working for her aunt, who is equally as fiery as she is. Itusomi also confronts Oushi about their rivalry and stands firm in his relationship with Yuki. In episode eleven, Kyoya’s and Rin’s romance blossoms! Shin’s feelings for Emma, and Emma’s feelings for Itsuomi come to a peak beneath the light of the full moon. We learn that Oushi’s decision to learn sign language originally came from a good place. The sundae ladies have a candid conversation about dating through the lens of Rin’s and Kyoya’s uncertain relationship label. In episode twelve, Yuki and Itsuomi have a beautiful first date together! Rin and Kyoya also get clarity on their relationship. Shin and Emma take a chance on love. It’s finale time!

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Jason Lord, voice actor and ADR director of the English dub of A Sign of Affection, review episodes seven through nine of the show! In episode seven, Itusomi and Yuki are official! Jason discusses the use of watercolors to denote the mixing of their communication styles in profound moments between them. After such a build up of romantic tension, Yuki and Itsuomi finally share a kiss thanks to an adorable miscommunication. In episode eight, Shin’s Keyboard Cat CD from Emma not only makes a big impression on him, but on Chika, Giana, and Jason as well. Itsuomi’s and Yuki’s “almost kiss” causes a lot of fun tension. Shin gets a “placeholder” girlfriend to bury his feelings for Emma. In episode nine, “the gang” goes to sign language bootcamp! Rin and Kyoya have a serious conversation about feelings. And the general consensus is glamping > camping. Get ready for an episode that’s absolutely packed with analysis, emotional commentary, and perhaps even a random musical cue.

Today is Shoujo Sundae’s 2nd Anniversary! To celebrate, Giana and Chika are doing an Ouran HighSchool Host Club manga retrospective! Return to Music Room 3 and out what they thought of the true ending of the series and all of the character development that happened along the way. Some discussion points include: general differences between the anime and the manga, whether or not Tamaki’s father handled his mother’s iron fist was the right way to go about taking her down, Tamaki and Haruhi’s love story, thoughts on the Hitchaiin’s mutual crush on Haruhi, the uncomfortable homophobia sprinkled throughout the story, lots of pining for a second season, and so much more! In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes four through six of A Sign of Affection! In episode four, Yuki, Itsuomi, Rin, and Kyoya go on an adorable, mundane double date. It’s a wonder Kyoya hasn’t picked up on Rin’s very obvious feelings. Itsuomi asserts his place by Yuki’s side when he stands up to Oushi on the street. In episode five, Itsuomi’s string of suave moves take the ladies’ breath away. Kyoya’s emotional distance from Rin sends up a red flag. Rin, as the world’s best wingwoman, sets Yuki and Itsuomi up to continue an important conversation that had been interrupted. Unfortunately, we learn that Yuki’s family has never taken the time to learn sign language, whereas Itsuomi is making a point to learn it for her. In episode six, Itsuomi’s beautiful confession to Yuki in the snow is a shoujo moment for the history books. He also makes sure to clear up any confusion regarding his relationship with Emma. Throughout this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana share a lot of memories, thoughts, and feelings about life, relationships, and some unhinged thoughts!

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Magical Girl Ayu of the Sparkleside Chats podcast review episodes one through three of A Sign of Affection! In episode one, we enter Yuki’s world, our pink-haired deaf protagonist. The poetic, romantic nature of this beautifully animated series is captivating to say the least. We also meet Itsuomi, a boy passionate about language and culture, and Rin, Yuki’s extraordinary wingwoman of a friend who’s crushing on Itsuomi’s cousin, Kyoya. Yuki’s and Itsuomi’s instant chemistry jumpstarts all three ladies’ hearts. Ayu opens up about the shoujo sparkles in her own relationship. In episode two, Itsuomi makes a point to stay in contact with Yuki while traveling, and it goes to show how much he truly likes her. Rin continues to be the wingwoman of the century. Oushi is frustrating in the way he signs so harshly to Yuki, for infantilizing her, and for translating for her without her asking, among other things. In episode three, Yuki makes a sign language guide for Itsuomi! Talk about dedication! Yuki tells Itsuomi that she’s comfortable with his touch, melting everyone’s hearts. Shin and Emma are introduced, and Yuki asks Itsuomi for clarity on whether or not he’s dating Emma. Itsuomi sets strong boundaries with Emma.

The three discuss and analyze not only Sasaki and Miyano’s journey, but the adorable peek we receive about Hirano’s and Kagiura’s relationship. Miyano’s mother learns about her son’s sexuality and her immediate acceptance is extremely heartwarming. Sasaki’s sister, on the other hand, takes a while to come to terms with the shock of learning that her brother is queer. Sasaki and Miyano explore more physicality together, which shows how far they’ve come since their sunset confession. This film is the cherry on top of a beautiful boy’s love series!

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes ten through thirteen of Sasaki & Miyano! There’s a few live fanfic moments, so please indulge alongside the girlies in some sweet, wholesome fantasies. In episode ten, Sasaki casually confides in Kuresawa, showcasing his ease with talking to his love interest’s friends. While out in public, Sasaki is able to ease Miyano’s worries about others speculating if the two of them are dating, which truly awakens Miyano’s feelings. However, Miyano’s lack of confidence in his feelings is a little frustrating. In episode eleven, Miyano’s determination to confess to Sasaki in just the right way is adorable. The absence of homophobia throughout Sasaki & Miyano is a breath of fresh air in the world of LGBTQ+ media. Hanzawa’s unclear feelings towards Miyano are a bit confusing. Chika shares part of her coming out story. In episode twelve, Sasaki maturely reconsiders his actions in episode eleven. We have an absolutely beautiful sunset confession scene! Unfortunately, however, Kuresawa puts Miyano in a position to reveal his relationship to Tashiro before he’s ready to do so. In our OVA, episode thirteen, Chika and Giana share some of their past in the world of reading and writing fanfiction after Hanzawa makes a lovely point about enjoying what you like at any age. Kagiura and Hirano’s relationship is SO interesting to say the very least. There’s so many cute cat shenanigans throughout this OVA!

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana, Chika, and Carola and Amanda of The Yaoi Shelf review episodes seven through nine of Sasaki & Miyano! In episode seven, Hirano plays the role of fairy godfather to Sasaki by leaving him alone to play cards with Miyano. Amanda reminisces about how they would tiptoe around communicating their feelings to a crush back when they were Miyano’s age. Makimura, Miyano’s middle school crush, does not serve the narrative purpose Giana thought she would. Sasaki’s jealousy rubs everybody the wrong way. In episode eight, Miyano’s realization of his feelings is peak Floats Your Boat. Chika is Banana Split about the scene wherein Miyano realizes his feelings due to some less than ideal circumstances. Carola almost threw her laptop due to the tension buildup between Sasaki and Miyano in this episode! In episode nine, everyone rooted so hard for a kiss that didn’t happen. Amanda, Carola, and Chika want to visit a delinquent café. Sasaki touching Miyano despite his sickness gives Chika the ick.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Pearl Low, founder of Orange Blossom Studio and the creator of Wheels & Roses, review episodes four through six of Sasaki and Miyano! In episode four, Sasaki’s evident deepening feelings for Miyano has everyone rooting for him! The accidental kamedan scene brings forth incredible tension between Sasaki and Miyano. Sasaki grabbing Miyano through the window before Ogasawara can pat his head stirs mixed feelings. Are Sasaki’s and Miyano’s random meetups truly by happenstance? In episode five, Sasaki’s reiteration of his confession to Miyano in the shade as flowers fall all around them showcases his bravery and confidence in his feelings. Miyano’s complex regarding his feminine face is discussed. Sasaki’s actions while Miyano sleeps at school find themselves scattered throughout multiple layers of the sundae. In episode six, Miyano expresses to Sasaki that he needs more time to consider his confession, going against the notion that men should not have or vocalize their emotions. His non-response to Sasaki, however, leaves Chika and Giana feeling Banana Split. Kuresawa’s passion for his girlfriend sets the bar high for partners everywhere. And suddenly, to no one’s surprise, a fanfic idea is born at the end of the episode.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika enter the wonderful world of boy’s love! They review episodes one through three of Sasaki & Miyano. While the timeline of episode one was a little confusing at points, nothing could put a damper on the ample shoujo feels that bubbled and burst all throughout this darling first episode. Sasaki’s interest in Miyano’s interest is absolute couple goals. In episode two, Miyano is begged to embrace shame and not listen to spicy CDs in the school hallway. The tension emanating from Sasaki and Miyano during The Pocky Game scene is off the charts. A post credits scene shines a light on a very silly plot hole. In episode three, Sasaki nobly defends the importance of boy’s love to Ogasawara. Miyano boldly gifts Sasaki candy for white day, leading to an adorably heightened level of happiness for Sasaki. Sasaki’s quiet whisper of a confession was a welcome surprise just three episodes into what is shaping up to be a Shoujo Sundae favorite anime.

Arikoto’s and Sutezo’s first time meeting is uncomfortable to say the least. It is heartbreaking to see Arikoto’s rage and depression after everything he’s been through. In episode eight - Gyokuei, more like Gyoku-gay, am I right? There’s something very funny about Iemistu and Gyokeui getting it on for Arikoto’s sake. In episode nine, neither Chika nor Giana attempt to sugar coat the way they are ROOTING for Kasuga’s impending death. Sutezo’s passing was a devastating situation all around. In episode ten, the loose ties and unanswered questions leave much to be desired with the finale of Ooku: The Inner Chambers.

In episode four, you can tell by the tone of our Floats Your Boat that this episode was going to hurt us deeply. Waka Murasaki meets a terrible fate, forcing Giana to hate Gyokuei with no hope for redemption. Rachel points out the interesting role reversal between Arikoto and Iemitsu. In episode five, Arikoto provides the ultimate fan service for bi individuals everywhere. Chika makes an interesting connection between Arikoto’s switch in devotion from Buddha to Iemitsu with cults. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Colleen of Colleen’s Manga Recs review episodes one through three of Ooku: The Inner Chambers. In episode one, Mizuno’s story is a mesmerizing one to follow. Yoshimune’s approach as Shogun is praised. The darkness woven throughout the Ooku is both intriguing and disturbing. In episode two, we meet the sweet and responsible Arikoto, whose life is forever changed upon “visiting” the Ooku. We also meet Lady Kasuga, who makes a permanent home in Hot Fudge after forcing Arikoto to stay at the Ooku by literally any means possible. In episode three, we learn more about Iemistu and Arikoto’s life at the Ooku. Iemitsu’s gift of a white cat to Arikoto at the end of the episode stirs up some both serious and extremely unserious Sprinkles on Top. Gyokuei’s character is lightly analyzed and Kasuga is roasted yet again.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes ten to twelve of My Happy Marriage. In episode ten, Kudo is commended for his passion and determination to stay by Miyo’s side. It was quite a shock to learn that Miyo had more immediate family, and also Arata’s weapon of choice in his duel with Kudo. Miyo’s dishonesty with Kudo upsets both Chika and Giana. In episode eleven, Giana shows appreciation for Miyo’s courage to stand up to Arata, even in small ways. Chika advises Miyo to not automatically follow the orders of her grandfather that she’s never met. Surprisingly we have... spanking? in My Happy Marriage? In episode twelve, Miyo not only finds healing through her powers, but saves Kudo. The lack of a kiss between Miyo and Kudo stirs up some frustration. The Emperor’s motive is confusing to say the least.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes four to six of My Happy Marriage with Pete and Miles of the What Do You Say Anime podcast. In episode seven, justice certainly tastes like a sweet sundae as everyone celebrates the Saimori’s downfall. Hazuki brings, as Miles points out, a new, interesting pace to this anime as a far more upbeat, energetic character to a more generally reserved cast. Pete pours some fresh, piping hot fudge all over Kouji. In episode eight, the grotesqueries really shake things up: Giana is intrigued by the presentation of the curse, Chika is grossed out by them, and Miles points out the lackadaisical attitude the fabulous heir has about fighting against them. In episode nine, Miles gives a clearer perspective on some confusion around Kudo knowing if Miyo fainted in his absence. Miyo and Kudo’s vulnerable nighttime conversation brings on lots of shoujo feels. Arata gets BOILED in hot fudge!

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes one to three of My Happy Marriage. In episode one, the sundae girlies try to grasp onto whatever positivity they can find in this very bleak reality for Miyo. Chika speculates about Kaya’s legitimacy as Shinichi’s daughter. Giana points out the potential cycle of abuse in the My Happy Marriage universe. In episode two, Giana muses Kudo’s cold behavior up front towards Miyo and his previous fiancée . Chika points out the reasons why Miyo could be struggling to eat alongside Kudo. Miyo’s trauma dreams strike a personal chord with Giana. Chika covers Kouji’s father with a healthy heaping of hot fudge. In episode three, Kudo’s and Miyo’s first date gives Chika and Giana so many shoujo feels. In episode three, Kudo’s understanding that a few gifts or dates won’t heal Miyo earns him brownie points from Giana. Chika brings up confusion around Miyo’s treatment by the Saimori’s if she’s from such a prestigious and powerful bloodline.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes twenty-four and twenty-five of Fruits Basket (2019). It’s finale time! In episode 24, Kyo’s true form is shocking to Chika and Giana for reasons you wouldn’t expect. Kyo’s mother’s delicate treatment of Kyo, and especially his rosary, tugged at the girls’ heartstrings. Tohru’s ability to allow the way she cares for Kyo trump the fear she has of his true form makes Giana “a wreck”. In episode 25, Chika credits Yuki for how much work he put into resisting his revulsion to the cat spirit. Giana takes the opportunity to fangirl over Eric Vale one last time. The lack of information about the aftermath of the reveal of Kyo’s true form leaves lots of lingering questions. Kagura and Kazuma leaving without saying goodbye after everything that occurred the previous night leaves a bitter taste in this week’s sundae. Also, why would Shigure invite everyone to his house for dinner if he wasn’t going to be present??

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana, Chika, and Cristal Marie review episodes twenty-two and twenty-three of Fruits Basket (2019). In episode 22, we learn all about Hanajima’s powers and dark past. This episode was a really heavy hitter and brings out some Rocky Road moments in Sprinkles on Top. Hanajima’s family is loving, supportive, and sweet to their daughter. In particular, Megumi’s prayer for someone who understands his sister to come into her life really tugs at everyone’s heartstrings. There is also confusion and speculation around what Hanajima’s power truly is and where it could possibly come from. Hana’s bullying comes with a healthy serving of Hot Fudge. In episode 23, Kyo’s sweet blushy moments and cooking for Tohru to show appreciation when she was sick earn spots in everyone’s Floats Your Boat. Shigure saying “Be a good girl” to Tohru makes its home in Banana Split for a reason you probably wouldn’t expect. Chika and Cristal get vulnerable in Hot Fudge about their mental health struggles versus the expectations of those around them. Kagura receives yet another healthy serving of I Scream, You Scream.

In episode 19, the interpretation of the Sohma’s acceptance, or lack thereof, of Ritsu’s identity differs amongst the ladies. Ritsu’s gift of books about fruit as opposed to actual fruit for Tohru also banana splits the ladies’ (mainly Giana’s) opinions. The non-humor of Mitsuru’s drastic measures due to Shigure’s antics gets a heavy helping of hot fudge. In episode 20, Hiro Sohma gets on EVERYBODY’S last nerve. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika are back to review episodes sixteen through eighteen of Fruits Basket (2019). We begin by wishing Giana a very happy belated birthday before we get into the shenanigans. In episode 16, Uo and Hanajima get the Sohmas to pay for Tohru’s new swimsuit as a reward for all the support she gives them. We also learn Uo’s backstory on how she befriended Tohru. Chika and Giana discuss their perspectives on Uo’s insistence on Tohru getting a new swimsuit and how this situation could have happened differently. Giana is banana split on why pink wasn’t incorporated more into Tohru’s character design. In episode 17, we continue to learn Uo’s backstory with scenes from how she left her gang to be a better best friend to Tohru, Kyoko saving Uo, and Uo giving Kyoko-like advice to middle school delinquents who had been following her. Chika loves how, with Kyoko’s help, Uo can see life as what it could be rather than what life hasn’t given to her. Giana sees herself in Tohru because they both speak formally to others. And both Giana and Chika are upset with Uo’s gang being violent towards her for leaving. Lastly, in episode 18, we meet Kisa Sohma, the tiger zodiac who went mute after being bullied at school. She mustered the courage to talk once more and go back to school with help from Hatsuharu, Yuki, and Tohru. Chika and Giana have a big hot fudge session about Kisa’s mom and family.

In episode 14, we learn about Momiji’s unfortunate parental situation and it contains a lot of hot fudge. Chika brings up Tohru’s and Momiji’s uncomfortable positivity in banana split. Yuki’s passing thoughts about barely being aware of Tohru before becoming close to her spurs a Google search among the ladies. In episode 15, Hatori steals the show in Floats Your Boat simply by existing in a hot way. Chika gets excited over the idea of Zodiac pets. Ayame’s behavior at the end of the episode is definitely I Scream, You Scream worthy.

In episode 12, Hatsuharu’s “proof” gives everyone a laugh. Yuki’s emotional past and inner dialogue resonates with Giana. Chika lays down a solid theory about Shigure’s manipulation tactics. Avary breaks down the possible reason behind Akito’s harsh opinion of Tohru.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika continue Fruits Basket (2019) with episodes four through six. In episode 4, Giana reads the most difficult Wikipedia summary yet. The way Tohru finds joy in the little things and has such an optimistic outlook impresses Giana and Chika. In Hot Fudge, Chika describes Kagura perfectly to a T. In episode 5, Giana realizes a tear-inducing Sprinkle On Top on the fly. Grandpa Honda steals the show with that righteous slap. Tohru’s emotional journey of leaving Shigure’s house mixed with the Sohma boys choosing her really strikes a chord with the ladies. The avenue Tohru’s cousin takes to become a police officer stirs up a lot of piping hot fudge. In episode 6, we formally meet Momiji and everybody’s favorite hot doctor, Hatori! Kyo’s reaction to a cat-shaped riceball validates Chika’s dislike of eating themed food. Chika speculates which US publisher would take on Shigure’s writing.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana dive into the Fruits Basket reboot! The girls lovingly poke fun at people who dislike Fruits Basket, claiming it to be quintessential shoujo content. In episode 1, the girls admire Tohru’s adamant optimism and inner strength. Chika shocks Giana with an unexpected Banana Split. Chika also points out the oddness of Shigure being alone in Tohru’s guest room with her. Katsuya Honda, Tohru’s father, is not safe from the heat of Chika’s hot fudge. In episode two, Tohru’s sweet moment with Yuki in the classroom melts the sundae girls’ hearts. Shigure being a homeowner at twenty-seven is not only aspirational but astonishing. In true anime fashion, THE WHOLE BUILDING returns! In episode three, Chika poses the important question: why don’t the zodiacs mate with their respective animals? Is it beastiality? Jokes aside, the girls get pretty vulnerable in Rocky Road.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika bring their coverage of Ouran HighSchool Host Club to a bittersweet close with episodes twenty-five and twenty-six. In episode twenty five, Giana unapologetically goes into full Romance Girl™ mode by analyzing Haruhi’s potential feelings for Tamaki beginning to take shape. She also boards the Mori x Haruhi ship with Chika as the captain! Chika invents a cute love interest for Honey. Giana grasps at straws to see things from Tamaki’s fathers perspective, but Chika hilariously puts him in his place. A massive coating of hot fudge is poured all over Tamaki’s grandmother. Giana introduces a new segment, Nuts, and unveils a shocking easter egg within the episode.  In episode twenty-six, Kyoya earns so many brownie points! Things take a sharp left turn and get very dark and fiery in Floats Your Boat with regards to The Chairman. Banana Split becomes rewriting the ending of the series. The deep bonds between host club members tug Chika’s and Giana’s heartstrings in Rocky Road. Chika points two glaring plot holes, and holds nothing back to unleash on Lady Eclair!

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana discuss episodes twenty-two through twenty-four of Ouran HighSchool Host Club. During episode twenty-two’s discussion, Giana confesses that these three episodes are her favorites of the series. Chika opens up about others mispronouncing her name, relating to Kasanoda’s situation with the host club. The girls also fondly remember some of their beloved childhood games. In episode twenty-three, Kasanoda calls out Tamaki about not being Haruhi’s father in the most satisfying way, earning him many brownie points from the Sundae girls. Chika elaborates on why both Tamaki and Haruhi are acting stupid in this episode. The girls break down Kasanoda’s shockingly big feelings for Haruhi. In episode twenty-four, Giana explains seeing potential in Tamaki’s potential emotional intelligence. Chika uncovers somewhat of a plot hole regarding Kyoya’s “third son” situation. Kyoya’s beautiful portrait spurs an uncomfortable look at capitalism.
